Sam Bigelow — The Foundry
Produced and engineered by Anand Nayak Recorded at Hi-n-Dry in Cambridge, MA Mastered by Ian Kennedy at New Alliance in Cambridge, MA
Heartbreak can often be the musical mammary that nourishes an artist's innermost creativity. Sam Bigelow is no exception. The bluesy mélange of soulful vocals and raw piano rock heard on his newest album, The Foundry, are attributed to Bigelow's love loss in recent years. He remarks, "I needed to have my heart ripped out to hear what my real voice sounded like." There is a resounding sense of strength in both the lyrics and the trio of musicians backing Bigelow, as he incorporates a plethora of various blues instruments such as the organ, lap steel, bari sax, Wurlitzer, and slide guitar into his sound. Stemming from classic singer/songwriters such as Ray Charles and Otis Spann, Bigelow adjusts his sound to the modern era of Ben Folds and Elton John — all equally skilled in filling a room with rocking piano and enough booming sound to orchestrate a small parade. Bigelow is honest with both his emotional grappling and his musical style. The last song on the album, "Sugar & Milk," contains lyrics such as "Sugar and milk / Like the evening sun / It'll be gone in a certain amount of time / It's little things like this, remind me that my life is fine," proving that Bigelow is an artist who admires the minutiae of everyday life. He can also admit to himself who he is at his core: "Best I'm a pauper living in a rich man's skin / Fakin' it while I'm still young / But fading fast within." Complete with appropriate cover art — a literal image of the album's title — this release champions Bigelow's triumphant defeat of his pain and suffering. The album molds Bigelow into a tenacious and boldly defiant human being — a muse for music lovers and heartbroken souls alike. (Hi-n-Dry)

Sam competed solo 'against' 6 other great songwriters in the Starbucks Music Makers Competition semi-finals last night in Providence. What an incredible surprise to win after hearing other insanely talented artists play. Sam now moves on to the finals which are being held Thursday, October 11th at the new Hard Rock Cafe in Faneuil Hall in Boston. Out of 700 or so submissions, it will now be down to just 7 artists. Bring it on! Thanks so much to all of the talented artists who competed last night and to NEMO for putting this all together. He could...go...all...the...way!

"Sam Bigelow's second CD, The Foundry, offers up powerful rocking piano which call to mind Billy Joel and Elton John manning the ivories back in their '70s hayday. Several notable Beantown artists show up to support Bigelow, among them Dennis Brennan and Twinemen, Dana Colley and Billy Conway. Sam nimbly navigates and strides the keys. He's a dynamic vocalist as well and drives the party into gear one moment and brings it down to a whisper for a parted lover. The emotional resonance of his voice charges the ballads "Julia" and "What To Say" and carries the songs even when the lyrics aren't so strong. Another standout, "This Is Your Night," sounds like the soundtrack to a New Orleans all-nighter. I can imagine the attendees getting ready to wander out to the nearest diner for requisite coffee and grease. "Geraldine" is an angel in the crowd musing where Bigelow fantasizes about the woman sharing his armrest with him on a flight. Overall, this is solid pianistic rock/blues songwriting from an up-and-comer." -Dan Leary, The Noise
"Though some of the songs sound vaguely like comtemporary showtunes, on the whole Bigelow's second disc, The Foundry, has the kind of toe-tapping vibe that, thankfully, channels Billy Joel more than Rent. The Boston piano man keeps things interesting throughout the 11-track set, tossing off upbeat shout-outs to hometown spots and dispensing a primer on surviving a hangover. Bigelow devotees already know he's a great musician; this mix of soulful reflections and jovial anthems shows a well-developed songwriter too.' -Sarah Corrigan, Boston Magazine
