PERKINS 14
Last I wrote to you all a few months back I was working the theatrical release of Perkins 14 and Horrorfest III. It did very well on the big screens thanks to all of you. I have to especially thank all of the volunteers and streetteamers across the country who hit up all the conventions and really did a great job promoting for me. The entire cast and crew of “Perkins” thanks you!
On March 31rst the film was released on DVD and is now available at many retail outlets and online through amazon.com

I hope to return to the big screen in 2010 under Craig Singers direction in another film he has written called “Paradiddle” that we both have an incredible amount of passion for and a burning desire to make. I had the opportunity to perform it live on stage in NYC a few months ago under the direction of Thomas G Waites.
BLITZKRIEG
I began working with Marky in November of last year. We went to Europe and played a handful of shows together consisting of RAMONES classics just a few days after I had returned from my US tour.
I met him and the rest of the band in Italy.
We rehearsed in Markys room where he played drums on the bed and Alex and Clare strummed there unplugged instruments for about 15 minutes before being shut-down by hotel management for making too much noise. The next night I walked out onto the stage to continue a remarkable American musical legacy started in the early 70’s by a bunch of kids from New York who decided to call themselves THE RAMONES.
The European tour was very successful. I was able to go back to Romania and see some new friends I made while working on Perkins 14 in Bucharest. The true spirit of Rock N Roll is alive and well indeed in Eastern Europe.
On March 4, 2009 we celebrated Markys’ new line of clothes he inspired and designed with his old friend Tommy Hilfiger. The band kicked off the release in NYC in SOHO at the Tommy Hilfiger store by blasting through a 35 minute set that blew everyones mind that attended.

The next day I got on a plane with the band and we flew to Mexico to play where a city under siege and marred in violence embraced us and for a short time was able to escape the reality of the outside world to rock out with us. After the second show as we were trying to leave, hundreds of our fans became so rabid that they litteraly attacked us and our vehicle. The scene escalated into a near riot situation before we were able to escape.
I want to thank a good friend of mine, Vampiro, who calls Mexico home and continues to work tirelessly to help transform his country and protect, inspire and motivate the people, especially the youth of that country and ours through his actions and work with The Guardian Angels. Our first American show was next on the list and took place on March 17th, 2009 in Tupelo, MS the birthplace of Elvis Presley. As many of you know I am no stranger to the south and with the hard work of all my good friends down that way including my buddy Rick Dunsford who brought us to Tupelo and put on the show through his company we broke the attendance record at “Benjamins On Main“.
A week later we sold out “Maxwells” in Hoboken, NJ.

Suffice to say we are off to a pretty good start.
So here I am with the band in Japan where we are to play in Nagoya, Osaka and Tokyo at PUNKSPRING 09. Then we are onto Australia for a weeks worth of dates down under.
Michale Graves
Early this year brought the European release of ILLUSIONS LIVE/VIRETTA PARK
The album continues to do very well and I am so pleased to be able to share my work with the rest of the world. There were very few that would have bet a few years back that I would be able to do so well when I decided to launch my acoustic effort.
I have written my follow up album to ILLUSIONS LIVE/VIRETTA PARK and in the coming months will begin the process of recording it. The album will contain a couple of older tunes that have been floating around for some time but will mostly consist of brand new songs that I have written.
The follow up to my first film that I made called,” The Blackness and The Forest“ http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&VideoID=22375270
is in the works as well.
“The Blackness and The Forest II/Viretta Park” will tell the story of mine and JVs’ trip across the US and how and why Viretta Park influenced and played such a huge part in the past effort. It will also contain live footage and audio shot in Pittsburg, PA towards the conclusion of the 2nd US Tour.
I have found some time to begin writing again. I recently wrote an article for a German Publication called “Deadline Magazine” called “Becoming Caligari”.
I am also working on some other literary projects that I hope to complete and have ready for release sometime in 2010.
I will return to the road starting in early July with my acoustic set. Dates will be announced in the next few weeks. If you are interested in information about bookings please contact Roz at :
poochbooking@aol.com
Believe it or not there is much more going on and a bunch of other things that I am working on that I have not touched on in this update. Stay tuned for much, much more in the coming months.

New trial sought for Damien Echols
The stepped-up legal and investigative effort on behalf of those convicted in the West Memphis Three case continues. A motion was filed today for a new trial for Damien Echols, sentenced to die in the slayings of three young boys. The motion cities DNA evidence (or, rather, absence of any pointing toward guilt) and alleged juror misconduct. These issues have been discussed previously and dismissed by the state.
Read all about it on the jump.

NEWS RELEASE
DAMIEN ECHOLS SEEKS NEW TRIAL IN ARKANSAS SUPREME COURT

New DNA and Forensic Evidence and Juror Misconduct Cited in Plea to Overturn Wrongful Conviction

Prominent Arkansas Attorney Files Sworn Affidavit Stating Jury Foreman Urged Other Jurors to Convict Based Upon False Confession

(Little Rock AR, March 26, 2009) – DNA testing and other powerful forensic evidence - combined with a sworn affidavit that the original jury foreman engaged in blatant misconduct that contributed to the jury’s decision - proves that Damien Echols was wrongfully convicted of three notorious 1993 murders in West Memphis, Arkansas, according to legal papers filed today in the Arkansas Supreme Court asking to overrule a lower court decision and grant Damien Echols a new trial.

Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley were convicted in 1994 for crimes they did not commit, and have served 15 years in prison.  There was no credible physical evidence, eyewitness testimony or motive tying the three local teens to the murders.  Damien Echols was sentenced to death and Jason Baldwin to life imprisonment at their joint trial.  Misskelley was tried separately and sentenced to life in prison.

Case History

Three eight-year-old boys were found dead in a drainage ditch in Robin Hood Hills, a local wooded area near their homes in West Memphis, on May 6, 1993.  Less than a month later, 17-year-old Jessie Misskelley “confessed” to the crime and claimed that Echols and Jason Baldwin sexually abused and beat the victims.  Misskelley, a mentally handicapped boy with an IQ of 72, believed he would get a reward for confessing; many of the details of his confession (including the time of day the crimes were committed and the claim of sexual abuse) did not match the facts of the crime.  Misskelley was tried and convicted of first-degree murder in February 1994.  Baldwin and Echols were tried together after Misskelley’s trial, and were convicted of three counts of first-degree murder.  The following day, Echols was sentenced to die, and he has been on death row ever since.

At the time of Damien Echols’s trial, there was no scientific evidence to support the prosecution’s case and a poisonous atmosphere during trial contributed to his wrongful conviction.  The prosecution alleged that Echols and two other teenagers committed the crimes as part of a satanic ritual and provided testimony from a faux “expert” whose words created a Salem witch trial atmosphere.
Echols was 18 years old and penniless at the time of his trial, and a court-appointed attorney representing him failed to challenge a pattern of inaccurate and inflammatory statements made by prosecutors and others during the trial, failed to engage forensic experts who could have refuted the testimony that was used to convict Echols, and entered into a contract with documentary filmmakers prior to the trial which improperly influenced legal decisions in the defense.

Crime Scene DNA Does Not Match Echols, Baldwin or Misskelley

Dozens of pieces of evidence found at the crime scene conclusively show that no DNA from the murders matches Echols or the other two men.  DNA testing, however, links Terry Hobbs, stepfather of one of the murdered children, to the crime scene, and other evidence has emerged implicating him in the crimes. [Editor's note: Hobbs has denied such charges in the past.]

A hair found in the knot used to bind the victims matches Terry Hobbs.  Tests also show foreign DNA – from someone other than Echols, Baldwin and Misskelley – on two of the victims.  DNA matches a hair at the murder scene to another man who was with Hobbs on the day of the crimes.  This places Hobbs at the scene of the crime, since it refutes any theory that the Hobbs hair was there before the crime.  DNA testing linking Hobbs to the crime scene was not available at the time of the trial.

In addition, scientific evidence from the nation’s leading forensics experts demonstrates that most of the wounds on the victims were caused by animals at the crime scene, after their deaths – not by knives used by the perpetrators, as the prosecution claimed and was the centerpiece of the prosecution’s case.  Moreover, evidence presented that a knife recovered from a lake near one defendant’s home caused the wounds was completely discredited by the pathologists.  As well, the testimony of a jailhouse informant and a faux “expert” who testified that the knife wounds were part of a satanic ritual was deemed incredulous by these forensic scientists.

Jury Foreman Engaged in Shocking and Illegal Activity During Trial

Echols’s brief also informs the Supreme Court that a prominent Arkansas attorney who is a former prosecutor and state official filed a sworn affidavit with the trial court detailing the contents of improper conversations that the jury foreman held with the attorney while the original trial was in progress, clearly violating the law and the rights of Damien Echols and Jason Baldwin to a fair and impartial trial.  In those conversations, the jury foreman indicates that he had prejudged Echols’s guilt and was trying to convince other jurors to convict based upon news reports of the false confession of Jessie Misskelley, which was barred from admission at the Echols-Baldwin trial.

During one conversation, the jury foreman told the attorney that the prosecution had presented a weak case, and that the prosecution had better present something powerful the next day (the end of the prosecution’s case) or it would be up to him to secure a conviction.
The Arkansas Attorney General has opposed placing the affidavit, originally filed in May 2008 in the Circuit Court that tried the three defendants, in the record before the Arkansas Supreme Court.

Lower Court Decision Denying New Trial Based Upon DNA Law is Flawed and Narrows  Legislation’s Intent

In 2001, the Arkansas Legislature passed a law granting post-conviction access to DNA testing.  The law passed partly as a result of widespread doubts about the convictions of Echols, Misskelley and Baldwin.  The lower court’s decision denying Damien Echols a new trial based upon its narrow interpretation of Arkansas’ new scientific evidence statute (DNA law) was flawed and limits the possibility of any wrongfully convicted defendant of obtaining justice using DNA results.  In denying Echols a new trial, the state essentially declares that unless the new DNA establishes absolute exoneration it is not relevant.  The judge’s decision would not grant relief, “no matter how scientifically conclusive that a petitioner is not the source of relevant DNA, if not legally conclusive in favor of innocence.”

In fact, according to the Arkansas law (Ark.Code 16-112-201,et seq.) “A person is entitled to a new trial insofar as he can demonstrate that the DNA test results, when considered with all other evidence in the case, regardless of whether the evidence was introduced at trial, establish by compelling evidence that a new trial would result in an acquittal.”

Dennis Riordan and Don Horgan, Echols’s lead counsel, assert in their brief before the Supreme Court that “the evidentiary showing made by petitioner completely undermines the state’s evidence and convincingly points in the direction of alternative suspects.  Every reasonable juror hearing Echols’s new evidence would doubt his guilt; indeed, any such juror could be confident of his innocence.  Petitioner has more than satisfied the standard for relief set forth in Arkansas’ new scientific evidence statutes.”

"Moonlight Through the Pines"

From February 19th-22nd I will be in Georgia  filming a music video with a very talented and ambitious Alexander Skeen.  Alex is a student at The Savannah College of Art and Design and will be producing/directing a video based on an idea by Doug Evil for "Locked Away".

Alex says, "The music of Michale Graves provided the anthem for my teenage years. I can remember driving my friends home from school with all of us signing along to "Dig Up Her Bones", trying to pick up girls by playing "Crying on Saturday Night" on my acoustic guitar, and even singing "The Monster Mash" on Halloween with a skull painted on my face. No matter where I lived, whether it be New Zealand, Sweden, Spain or even Rhode Island, USA; these songs carried me all through my life.

I wanted to work with Michale because I truly believe that "Illusions Live / Viretta Park" is an amazing album, and I feel like I should do everything in my power to help get the word out to the public. With all of these resources available, I am confident we can provide Michale with the best Music Video possible.

As a fan, I know firsthand what it is like being starved for new information from a band that I love, so while Michale is down here for the shoot, we are going to be producing various "Behind the Scenes" videos to be put online. Everyone will be able to watch them while we are putting the finishing touches in Post-Production.

This is an album for the fans, and we want to keep that mentality throughout all phases of production. I hope you all will be patient for the next two months as we are working through this, and I am sure that you will all love the finished product!"

See you all soon!

Interview by: Heather Buckley

Craig Singer interviewSo maybe this year’s After Dark Horrorfest didn’t exactly set the box office on fire; hell I’m not even sure if it placed in the top 50. It’s a shame, too, because some of the film’s in this year’s lineup were worth checking out.
One such film, or so we’ve been told, was Craig Singer’s Perkins’ 14. Heather Buckley threw him some questions recently to find out more about the film, and he offered up his thoughts on horror, filmmaking, New Jersey, and Mickey Rourke.

Glenn Beck: What a miracle looks like

..

..
Audio Available:

January 16, 2009 - 13:05 ET
GLENN: Let me ask you this: What is a miracle? Is God a respecter of men? Does God answer prayers? Does God change the rules of the universe? What is a miracle?

Yesterday I came up to my office and I had been walking between our offices and by the time I had left one office and got into the next one and I come up, the people up on my floor said, "Glenn, there's been a plane crash." And I said, "Where?" And they said, "You can see it in the corner office in the back of the building." I can't tell you, I can't tell you what it's like to work in New York City. A week ago -- my office overlooks the Empire State building. I'm a few blocks away from the Empire State building and I can see it in one of our floor-to-ceiling windows. I can see the full impair state building, from the base to the top. That window -- my desk looks right at it, and last week somebody threw themselves out of a 70-story window, out of the Empire State building. So now every time I look up from my desk, I see that and for the last week or so I've been just thinking about that poor soul that was so desperate that threw himself out of the window. The other way you look at my desk, the other floor-to-ceiling window is looking at the Chrysler building, but two of the New York airports are on the other side of the island right behind -- the perspective is right behind the Chrysler building. So I'm looking at this sea of sky scrapers and I keep seeing these planes dodge between the buildings or what looks like are dodging between the buildings. They're quite a distance away. So every time I think of it, I think of the World Trade Center. In our studios we look right into Times Square and quite honestly every time I look at Times Square, I think of who are we because of all of the consumerism and everything else, what is happening. And the one bright spot is on the other corner of the studio that looks right out over the river, right over the Intrepid. It has been the only corner for me on this -- because we have a floor, and it's the only corner for me that has remained a real corner of hope because I see that aircraft carrier out there and I see -- I think of the great history of our military and our country and everything else. And they said, "You can see it in the back." And I said, where? They said, "You can see it right next to the Intrepid." And immediately I thought, "Oh, no." First of all I thought, was it terror, what happened, et cetera, et cetera. And it just, I just, I had just no more left in me. I think I might have said, "This city just never gives up." And I walk to the window and we see the -- we can see the plane, we can see the rescue happening. In fact, the picture that you see on the Drudge Report that's been there was sent from our office, and I tell you, I have to ask you what is a miracle, what is a miracle. I know what a mistake is. That was -- what is a miracle.

I think what we witnessed yesterday was a miracle. I don't know if you have looked and put all of the string of coincidence together. I mean, here's a group of people that get together, they hear a large bang. Put yourself in this seat. You hear a large bang, you look out the window, you see the engine flame out, and what goes through your mind right then? Have you ever been on a plane where you think -- where you just hit bad turbulence? I've been white knuckle, just holy cow, we're not going to make it. What are you thinking when the pilot gets on the speaker and says, "Brace for a rough landing"? What are you thinking when they say, "Underneath your seat is a flotation device." What are you thinking? Are you looking out the window? Are you looking out and seeing that eye level you are right -- you are looking possibly at people like me looking right at you out the window. Do you see the Hudson River getting bigger and bigger, the ice that's in it and you know possibly "I can't swim." If we do get out, how long can I last in that water? What is the pilot thinking as he's heading towards the George Washington bridge, the exact same route that was taken by the 9/11 hijackers? You don't fly over the George Washington bridge. You don't fly over the Hudson. This is the route -- the last time a 727 took this route, they ended in the World Trade Center. What were the people on the bridge thinking as they saw this plane slowly lumber 900 feet over the George Washington bridge? Probably the same thing I was thinking when I arrived in my office. What was the pilot thinking, knowing that his engines weren't working, wondering can I get my plane over the bridge? What was he thinking when he could see in the sky the Hudson or Teterboro, which is an airport in New Jersey? They were equal distance from each other. Did he choose, "I'm going to land this in the water because if I land it in the water and we crash or if I can't make it, it only kills us. If I try to make it to Teterboro and something happens, I crash into a mass of humanity. Was that what he was thinking? What was he thinking when he passed the bridge and he got over it and he looked down the Hudson and there weren't any boats on the Hudson? If you're anywhere near New York or if you're a pilot and you see the Hudson, you fly over it and you see it, there are always tugboats, there are always barges, it's always full of boats. Was he wondering before he could see the Hudson how many people will I kill on boats? What was everybody thinking when they hit the water, at a speed, it was like hitting dry ground? As you feel the jolt shoot through your body from your feet to your head? What were you thinking as your body pulls up against that seat belt and yet your body is flexible enough that you hit your head on the luggage compartment? What goes through your mind when you believe you're going to die? I can tell you I don't think that you were thinking about your political party. You weren't thinking whether you were from a red state or a blue state. "Oh, gee, if I just would have finished that project at work." "Oh, gosh. Well, thank goodness it's over because I've lost my job." I doubt you were thinking, "Oh, jeez, well, this will be blessed relief because I've got so many other problems and the world seems to be melting down." I dare say even Al Gore wouldn't have been thinking, "Oh, jeez, but who's going to fight global warming." You are not thinking about Barack Obama's inauguration.

........

Yesterday God sent us a reminder, a reminder of what's truly important. On the same path as the planes of 9/11, he reminded us yet again: It's about family. And that's really pretty much it. He reminded us that miracles happen. He reminded us that when everything is stacked against us, we can make it. Even coming at a dirty and grungy and mob body-filled water, you can survive.

Both engines blown out, hydraulic system on the plane impacted. The pilot makes that thing a lumbering giant, and he had no hydraulics and he's trying to hold on, he and the copilot. They missed the George Washington bridge by 900 feet. A plane falling from the sky, and everybody represented, from the 9-month-old baby to the 85-year-old grandma.

What was the string of coincidence, what was the string of coincidence? There were no boats or tugs. Why? Because it was cold. Just a few blocks up from the George Washington bridge, the river had just been closed. So there weren't any boats per se. That waterway is always full of tugboats and cargo ships. There was nothing, except ferries. You could land that plane anywhere. That plane came to a stop right by the Intrepid, which happens to be right by the ferry docks. There happened to be a ferry right there just about where the plane came to a dead stop. The ferry, all they had to do was just release the lifeboats and push them over.

It's been 45 years since a plane landed on the water and everyone survived. 45 years. I don't even listen to "Your seat can be used as a flotation device." Just slam into the water because you are all going to flip and die. I'll never say that again.

By the way, something else that was highly unusual. This pilot is not only somebody who teaches safety, who teaches emergency landing, not only has air hours like crazy, not only is a fighter pilot but he is one of the rare few commercial air pilots that not only have combat experience but also has his glider's license. I doubt he ever thought he would be gliding an Airbus, but he did.

Even though the water was choppy and white capped and 40 degrees and 18 degrees outside, somehow or another he landed it perfectly what are the odds that that happened? What are the odds that they hit a flock of geese, in fact not one but two, so big that it actually showed up on radar.

God is not a respecter of men. He loves all of us, no matter what we do, equally. We just have to be prepared. He asks us, be prepared. He asks us, pay attention. He asks us to do the right things. He asks us to think of others. Was the pilot prepared? Did the pilot do the right thing for others? Why didn't he try to land at Teterboro? Why did he try a risky water landing in comparison?

You could choose to look at this as just a, "Wow, what a lucky break these guys had, huh?" Or you could experience the miracle of seeing a wake-up call, of seeing a message being sent. It landed right on 56th street. 57th's where all the media is located. All of the media is located on 57th, West 57th. The plane stopped on West 56th. So there was plenty of media there to capture it.

By the way, the plane also stopped where the media was. Today they've had to drive all the way down to Battery Park to see it because it has drifted from here to the old World Trade Center site, just about a block away from Wall Street.

Sure, an engine can take one bird, an engine can take two birds, but an engine can't take a flock, and an engine certainly can't take two flocks. It's very rare to experience something like this. It was almost, for a plane, the perfect storm. And there were the odds, but the people were prepared, they did the right thing, and they brought it down. And everybody got off the plane safely.

God didn't change the world. God didn't change physics. He didn't freeze the water to stop the boats. He didn't lift it up with his hand and defy physics. Miracles aren't like that. That's why people don't believe in them anymore. Miracles really are a change in perspective. My perspective on this plane crash is that, look at how many things went right. My perspective was, thank goodness we had somebody who in a state of emergency didn't panic, didn't do anything but his job.

By the way, Sully, as he's known, the pilot, he was spotted at the airport last night a few hours after the crash. He was dry, he was back in captain's clothes cleanly pressed. He had his captain's hat on. He sat alone in a coffee shop. The people who saw him said, aren't you... he said yes. He went back to minding his own business. They said that he looked like he was just finishing up another ordinary day.
