Bout Recap of CCRG over RMRG by DNN

WFTDA Bout Recap: (15) Charm City 115, (13) Rocky Mountain 97

Posted by Justice Feelgood Marshall on March 18th, 2008

Baltimore’s 15th-ranked Charm City Roller Girls and Denver’s 13th-ranked Rocky Mountain Roller Girls had an epic back-and-forth confrontation on Saturday night, with an especially heated second half that featured four lead changes before the Charm City girls finally managed to seal the deal in the last five minutes, defeating Rocky Mountain 115-97.

Things got off on the wrong foot for home Baltimore, as their leadoff jammer Stormin’ Mormon picked up a cutting-track major on her opening pass and found herself entering the penalty box before a minute had even gone by in the bout. That allowed opposing jammer Frida Beater to get 5 points and call off the jam with Stormin’ still in the box. On the following jam, She Who Cannot Be Named, on the jammer line for Rocky Mountain, added a 3-1 on Stormin’, making it Rocky Mountain 8, Charm City 1 after two jams. But Charm City found their footing soon afterwards, picking up lead jammer on the next five jams in a row and winning them all to establish a 29-12 lead about 12 minutes into the bout.

That 17 point lead would be the largest Charm City would enjoy until the very end of the game, though. Rocky Mountain turned the tables on Charm in the next series of five jams, getting lead on four out of five and outscoring the home team 16-7 to make it a considerably closer bout at 36-28 with about 10 minutes to play in the half. On the period’s second to last jam, Charm City’s Lady Quebeaum entered the penalty box early in the frame and She Who Cannot Be Named pulled down Rocky Mountain’s biggest jam of the half with a 9-0 that made the score Charm City 44, Rocky Mountain 41. With the 50 seconds of the last jam not quite enough for either Quebeaum or Frida Beater to score points, the score remained at 44-41 going into the half.

The second half was when the fireworks really started flying, though. After the teams traded wins in the first two jams, Charm City got an unwelcome flashback to the bout’s first jam when Stormin’ Mormon again went to the box for a cutting-track major during her opening pass — and once again Frida Beater capitalized, this time with a 10-0 that put Rocky Mountain in front for the first time in about 30 minutes, 63-59. Two jams later, though, it was Flo Shizzle igniting the crowd by taking advantage of She Who entering the box early in the jam, dropping a 10-1 score that put Charm City back in front, 72-68.

That wasn’t it for the pendulum swings. Just one jam after that, a fresh She Who got out of the box and grabbed the momentum right back with a 5-0 over Stormin’ Mormon that got Rocky Mountain the narrowest of leads at 73-72. And two jams after that, Lady Quebeaum put down a textbook 4-0 on She Who that gave Charm City the advantage yet again, making it Charm City 79, Rocky Mountain 76 with about 15 minutes left to play.

A couple of jams later, Lady Quebeaum was back to set in motion the events of a contentious final ten minutes of play by getting a crowd-pleasing 10-0 jam over She Who, who pulled her fourth minor trying to complete her opening pass. With the score 89-76, time ticking away and the always dangerous Joy Collision starting her first jam of the half on the line unopposed, the hometown crowd was clearly looking for the knockout blow — but instead, Joy was sent to the penalty box upon initially breaking the pack on a cutting-track major penalty, a call with which both the audience and Charm City bench vociferously and lengthily disagreed.

With that jam ending immediately due to no jammers on the track, it set up a brutal battle between jammers Coach Ballbricker for Charm City and Madam Maimya for Rocky Mountain, in which both jammers were relentlessly pummeled for nearly the whole two minutes before Ballbricker finally got lead and mercifully called it off at 0-0. But on the next jam, Rocky Mountain lit up the scoreboard with their biggest jam of the night, as Frida Beater lapped Flo Shizzle twice in the course of a 13-4 run. That pulled Rocky Mountain to within just four points at 93-89, but there’d be a lengthy official challenge as Rocky Mountain’s bench protested that the jam score should have put them in the lead. The score would stand after a review.

Rocky Mountain had been running a jammer rotation that was nearly exclusively She Who and Frida Beater through the half, but they turned to Winona Fighter to go up against Joy Collision on what would prove to be the game-sealing jam for Charm City. Winona went to the box mid-jam, and Joy Collision piled up three scoring laps to get the biggest jam margin of the bout right when Charm City needed it the most, claiming a 13-0 win that all but put the game out of reach at Charm City 106, Rocky Mountain 89 with only three minutes left to play. Flo Shizzle would tack one more onto Charm City’s victory margin with a 9-8 full-length win over the recently penalized Winona, and the bout would conclude with a truncated scoreless jam, leaving Charm City with an extremely hard-fought 115-97 victory.

Stats

With Charm City down two of their primary jammers for the game, Flo Shizzle was given the jammer star slightly more often than usual and rose to the occasion, scoring a season-high 51 points on 10 jams and outscoring her opposing jammers by 13 points. Joy Collision had the best jammer point differential for the home team with a +14; she was responsible for 19 points on 6 jams, and Lady Quebeaum was right behind her with 18 points on 5 jams and a +9 differential. Quebeaum held the crown for lead jammer percentage, pulling lead of 3 of 5 tries for 60%. Jamming for Charm City was rounded out by Duchess of Torque (5 jams, 14 points, even JPD), Stormin’ Mormon (6 jams, 9 points, -8 JPD) and Coach Ballbricker (1 jam, 0 points, even JPD.)

For Rocky Mountain, Frida Beater was extraordinarily effective from the jam line, getting 44 points on 12 jams — while it wasn’t a higher total than Flo’s, she had the more important stat with a game-leading +20 jammer point differential. She Who Cannot Be Named also went to the jammer line 12 times for Rocky Mountain, getting 30 points and a -12 JPD. The few remaining jams were scattered amongst Winona Fighter (3 jams, 12 points, -12 JPD), Ida Hustler (1 jam, 4 points, +1 JPD), Luscious Smacksome (2 jams, 4 points, even JPD), Madam MaimYa (2 jams, 3 points, -5 JPD) and Smashbox (1 jam, 0 points, -9 JPD.)

Both teams broke the century mark in penalties, with Rocky Mountain accruing 112 minors and 7 majors while Charm City was hit with 105 minors and 10 majors. Charm City won the lead jammer battle handily, taking it on 17 out of 33 jams while Rocky Mountain got it on 10 — this proved to be a crucial factor in the second half, as Rocky Mountain did not pull a LJ call for nearly the last 23 minutes of the bout.

Rocky Mountain is next in all-star action at home against 14th-ranked Providence on May 3. Charm City takes a short break from interleague play as they move to Baltimore’s DuBurns Arena for their home season, beginning May 3rd. They’ll be in action as an all-star team at Philly’s East Coast Extravaganza, taking on 20th-ranked Houston on Saturday, June 21 and Providence on Sunday, June 22.

The Rocky Mountain Rollergirls's 5280 Fight Club hosted the Gotham Girls Roller Derby's All-Star travel team on December 1st at Denver's Bladium to close the 2007 season for both squads. This was obviously going to be Fight Club's most difficult match this season, with the Gotham Girls ranked 5 while RMRG sat at 19.

Fight Club played a considerably full schedule this year, dominating a number of leagues including Angel City, No Coast, and, most notably, 9th-ranked Madison, with only one loss during the regular season to the formidable Rose City Rollers, ranked 15th.

The visitors from the Big Apple had been on a tear of their own, coming in with six wins and two losses on the year — one to Carolina in March and one to eventual champions Kansas City at Nationals.

The Colorado crowd packed the Bladium, eager to see how their home town heroines would fare against the vaunted Gotham squad. The first jam of the evening matched Frida Beater against Suzy Hotrod. Frida grabbed lead jammer and managed to gain two points, though Suzy snuck by with three of her own.

Fight Club then surrendered 'Lead Jammer' status to Gotham for the remainder of the period. She Who Cannot Be Named and Frida Beater switched off as jammers, but were unable to make it past Gotham's tight defense that included powerhouse hitter Beyonslay and pivot Ginger Snap. Frida scored the only six points Rocky Mountain was able to gain in the period. Jammers Penny Payne and Ida Hustler each made one appearance on the track, but had their times cut short thanks to penalties served in the box.

Blocker Madam Maimya was picked to jam as a substitute when both the Fight Club and the Gotham jammers were called off of the track, and while she muscled her way past a number of the Gotham blockers, she was sent to the penalty box rather quickly and was unable to score any points.

Notable jams for Gotham in the first period included a nine-point jam by Cheap Skate and a slew of four-point jams by Suzy Hotrod, Beatrix Slaughter and Brigitte Barhot that helped Gotham inch significantly ahead of Fight Club. After one period, Gotham had already jumped out to a hefty lead over the home team, 47 to 6.

The second period began with an 11-point jam by Beatrix Slaughter as Penny Payne sat in the penalty box, making it out to score only one point. Fight Club stayed stuck at seven points until four jams into the period when Frida was finally able to grab three more points to Cheap Skate's eight, making it Gotham 74, Rocky Mountain 11 Frida continued to be RMRG's scoring engine of the period, bringing Fight Club's score up to 20 by half time.

Gotham's jammers continued to push the score higher, however, with a seven-point jam by Cheap Skate and continued support from Brigitte Barhot and Suzy Hotrod. The end of period 2 saw Gotham 89, Fight Club 20.

The Denver crowd enjoyed a halftime jumprope exhibition, and although their team was down, they never ceased to cheer lustily for their favorites, roaring with approval each time a Rocky Mountain blocker felled a Gotham opponent. Gotham began the last period with jammer Suzy Hotrod sitting scoreless in the box while Frida Beater grabbed two points. Suzy came back with a vengeance for the next jam, scoring eight points as She Who was sent out to serve a penalty of her own.

Cheap Skate pushed Gotham past the century mark with her first jam of the period, but was sent to the box as rookie jammer Luscious Smacksome scored an impressive eight points in her Fight Club jamming debut. Frida and She Who continued to pick away at Gotham throughout the remainder of the bout, slowly adding a few points each jam and finally breaking their scoreless rut.

Meanwhile, pivot Winona Fighter held a tighter Fight Club defense at the front of the pack, and blockers Ida Hustler and Madam Maimya got in some decent hits.

Gotham made up for the absence of star jammer Bonnie Thunders by throwing nine different jammers at Rocky Mountain, including Fisti Cuffs and Beyonslay, two of the toughest blockers on Gotham's roster. Rocky Mountain satisfied their audience by winning the third period 28-24, finally adapting to Gotham's team speed and taking advantage of a handful of Gotham penalty miscues. The final score: Gotham 113, Fight Club 48.

Final:
RMRG: 85
DDD: 73

The following is the re-cap written by Phil Arnold (there may be variations in the scores below, above are the official final scores):
In a bout that featured several lead swings, the Rocky Mountain
Rollergirls 5280 Fight Club defeated the Dallas Derby Devils Travel
Team 89-73 Saturday night in Grand Prairie, Texas. In the other game
of the night the combined team from the Green Country Roller Girls
and the Tornado Alley Rollergirls defeated DDD's Death Row Rumblers
78-25.

The featured bout between Rocky Mountain and DDD started off mainly
as a defensive battle in the first period. The 5280 Flight Club had
their largest lead of the half with a 12-5 lead after the fifth jam.
The Derby Devils would chip back and actually take a 32-30 lead after
a 7-0 jam by Captain Ali Gorey in the 17th jam of the half. That
would be the largest jam of the night by DDD, and Rocky Mountain
would narrow the lead for the home team 38-37 at half time.

Ominous signs would open up the second half for Dallas. With Anita
Riot jamming, somehow four DDD blockers would end up in the penalty
box, despite a two-skater penalty box cap. Anita was out on the
track trying to pass four pack members of the 5280 Club, and while
two of her blockers were scrambling out of the penalty box belatedly
because of the cap, she was having difficulty getting by a solid wall
of Rocky Mountain blockers still on the track. Although she was the
lead jammer and she picked up three points, the team from Denver
would score four points and tie the game up.

This would lead to DDD having two blockers in the penalty box for
almost all of the second jam, and the Flight Club would take
advantage. Rocky Mountain's defense would keep the Dallas jammer
tied up in the pack the whole jam with a minimal number of blockers,
and She Who Cannot Be Named scored 15 points with 3 grand slams (pack
passes including the jammer). Suddenly Dallas was way behind and
Rocky Mountain was threatening to run away with the Interleague
bout. But the Derby Devils would not give up and chipped away at the
lead. In the tenth jam of the second half, Dallas would take a 61-60
lead.

Whether DDD was exhausted by the long effort to catch Rocky Mountain,
or the 5280 Flight Club came out with a new sense of energy, the team
in red would exert its defense, controlling the front of the pack
usually with three blockers for the rest of the game. The Derby
Devil jammers just could not get through the defense. Dallas would
face an unbelievable couple of jams late in the game. In the 14th
jam of the second half, Penny Payne was sent off for a penalty while
jamming. Anita Riot would score four points, but get held up by the
team from Denver's blockers, and some how the Rocky Mountain jammer
would come out of the box and score five-points as controversy
reigned supreme with the Dallas fans. Then Frida Beater would take
advantage of that tough Fight Club defense the next jam and the
heavily penalized Dallas blockers, outscoring the Derby Devils 14-3,
giving Rocky Mountain a 15-point lead that could not be overcome.

Frida Beater was the leading scorer for the Rocky Mountain
Rollergirls with 49 unofficial points. She Who Cannot Be Named added
31 points for the team in red. Top blockers for Rocky Mountain
included Pinky 500 and Ida Hustler. The leading scorer for the
Dallas Derby Devils was Anita Riot with 31 points. Hot for Teacher
added 18 points for DDD. All points are from my unofficial
statistics. Top blockers for Dallas included Scary Cherry Bang Bang,
Shocker, and Mercy.

It was Oxygen vs Calcium at the Fast Forward Skate Center in Madison,
WI
.

The Rocky Mountain Rollergirls' Fight Club trekked to America's
Heartland recently to face off against Wisconsin's Mad Rollin Dolls
travel team, the Dairyland Dolls. This was RMRGs first Division I
opponent since facing Arizona in June 2006 at home. The Fight Club
has been fine-tuning its strategy and preparing their skaters for top-
tier play. MRD meanwhile suffered a first-round elimination at the
Eastern Division tournament in August. So both leagues came into
this one with something to prove, to their own selves as much as each
other.

Trapping the jammer was the name of game throughout this interleague
battle, with formidable blocking on both sides. The first period
ended in RMRG's favor, their two-jammer rotation served the team well
by bringing in 57 points while the Dolls offense brought in 27.
Though FC had a solid 30 point lead, as every derby fan knows, that's
nothing so early in the game.

With 20 minutes down, each side made adjustments to its strategy.
The second period saw the accumulation of penalties settling in with
both teams skating short for a number of jams. The Dolls defense
stiffened up but Fight Club managed to maintain their composure, the
score at the end of the 2nd period RMRG 98, MRD 60.

The 3rd period is where exhaustion can take its toll, and a 38 point
lead can get cut significantly in a few jams. Fight Club continued
with its thin jammer bench while the Dolls put up counter moves to
match. Though the Dolls managed to score 38 points to the Fight
Club's 33, the final whistles sounded with the away team victorious,
final score RMRG 131, MRD 98.

The Rocky Mountain Rollergirls would like to extend a big "Thank You"
to the Mad Rollin' Dolls for their generous Midwestern Hospitality.
An extra big XO to our dedicated fans that came to Madison for this
great event! It was so great to see so many friendly faces on the
road

September 8th brought the No Coast Derby Girls' Mad Maxines from Lincoln, Nebraska to Denver to take on our own 5280 Fight Club on their home turf.  These teams had never faced off before, and each side was ready to battle for national rankings as members of the WFTDA.  Fight Club proved in the first period that they weren't messing around, bringing air-tight defense down on the Maxines that prevented them from scoring a single point throughout the first 20 minutes – something practically unheard of in a sport with scores frequently reaching over 100 points in a single bout.  The end of the period saw FC at 34, MM 0.

After the brutal beating Fight Club had served, the Mad Maxines desperately tried to up their game.  Throwing in agile jammer Sylvia Bullet, the Lincoln girls were able to put a few numbers on the board, though not many.  Second period put FC at 65, MM 9.

Though Fight Club's blockers were putting the hurt on the Maxines up until half time, the third period was the jammers' time to shine.  Frida Beater, She Who Cannot Be Named and Olivia Cryin' almost doubled the points for their team as the last 20 minutes counted down.  With minutes left in the bout, Maxine pivot Juana Whippin and Fight Club blocker Annia LateHer got in a scuffle that ended with Fight Club's coach, team manager, player Zoom Zoom Zetta and even a penalty timer getting ejected from the rest of the bout!  Though the 5280 girls suddenly found themselves short, that didn't prevent a 98-point spread – final score: FC 118, MM 20.

While it was rough on the track, RMRG loved having the Lincoln Ladies in town.  Thank you to the No Coast Derby Girls, our volunteers, and all of our fans that made it out to this incredible bout!!

On June 16th, the Angel City Road Ragers revved up their engines in Denver to take on our own 5280 Fight Club.  This was the Rager's first interleague game as members of the WFTDA, and Fight Club was more than willing to be the team to give them a warm welcome on the track.  Starting off strong and thanks to jams such as She Who Cannot Be Named's 14 points, FC gained a sizable lead by the end of the first period, bringing the score to FC 59, RR 31.

Not to be outdone in period 2, Fight Club's Frida Beater pulled in 13 points in one jam, sneaking by the constant heavy lateral blocks from Ragers such as Va Va Va Gina.  Fight Club held onto their lead until half time, ending the period with FC at 112, RR 60.

Both teams came back from the break out for blood, and thanks to players like Estro Jen and Ms. D'Fiant the Ragers were able to almost double their points.  With only a few minutes left in the game Rager Diesel was ejected for insubordination, though players on both sides had tempers flaring on the track.  While the Ragers came back with an impressive point gain, Fight Club still held the lead with a final score of FC 173, RR 119.

We'd like to thank the Angel City Road Ragers for coming up to play us – while the bout was brutal all around, you ladies kicked our butts on the dance floor afterwards!  Also, congratulations on your new membership to the WFTDA!

Fight Club shakes Salt City

For Denver's first travel team bout of the 2007 season, the 5280 Fight Club welcomed the Salt City Shakers from Utah. On May 12thThe Shakers crossed the state line in anticipation of their first travel game, and Fight Club was more than ready to give them a taste of interleague action. Thanks to high-scoring jams during period one such as Frida Beater's eight points and Olivia Kryin's ten, FC was able to bring in a massive lead by the first break: FC 47, SCS 14.

Bruised but not beaten, the Salt City Shakers came back for the second period with every intention to close the gap. Thanks to Lady Octane's jamming and a heavy blocker presence by Miss Discipline, SCS more than doubled their points. By halftime, however, FC still held a significant lead: 83 to SCS's 30.

For the last twenty minutes, Fight Club switched it up with Mama KiCass and Misstress Tarable taking a shot at jamming instead of their regular defense positions. On Salt City's side, notable jams included China White racking up nine points at the end of the period while two of Fight Club's blockers were stuck in the penalty box. Final score: Fight Club 122, Salt City Shakers 60.

Thank you to the Salt City Shakers for visiting the Mile High City and making Fight Club's first 2007 home bout a great one!! We had a great time on and off the track with all of you!
