Train Of Thought - Half Empty Independence
(Independent)
Forgive me for the following review as my train of thought has been derailed by... Train Of Thought and their surprisingly rockin' album "Half Empty Independence"! At first, I was letting down by their almost completely devoid of metal sound. After the second spin though, my tune changed as their post-grunge/post-hardcore vibe fucking hit me like a Mac Truck! Taking the blueprints laid down by the likes of Alice In Chains and Bad Religion and adding their own twist to them to forge a sound that is (semi)exclusively theirs. And with songs that prove that these guys aren't slouches in the intellectual lyricism department, like 'Brace Yourself' (a song about the American government's foreign policies and it's inefficiencies) and 'Drunk River' (hand-me-down alcohol abuse) help to fuel my non-disappointment. The vocalization is somewhere between Lain Staley and a slew of nu metal vocalists, so that's a bit of a bummer. The drummer on the other hand, pounds and flourishes with a jazz infused flair that adds unfathomable levels of intrigue. Unfortunately, the whole album reeks of a "please put us on the radio" friendly poise. I'm sure that if they push hard enough, you'll be hearing these guess over the airwave is the future. - :) CS

Train Of Thought - Half Empty Independence
Review by Ben Watkins
The CD came across my desk in early April. To be honest I've never even heard of this band before. Im actually a little shocked about this because Train Of Thought are a vicious metal band that you should hear. It's almost hard to believe they are a local band from RI. Huge powerful metal riffage with enormos vocal power. Locally recorded the album makes you feel these guys are already signed to a major record label.
You can catch Train Of Thought at Lupo's on April 18th. I suggest you get your asses off the couch and check these guys out!
Here's a little history. Train Of Thought have been around for some time now. Starting back in the early 90's the band put out an ep and one album. Their last CD "Words From Wisdom" (2004). was recorded by Joe Moody at Danger Studios in Prov. At the time the band consisted of Ed Bilodeau (drums) Eric Burlingham (Vocals & Guitar) and Brett Stetzen (Bass).
For the new album "Half Empty Independence", Train Of Thought were looking for a new, fresh up to date sound and decided to work with Peter LaGrasse at his studio, Static Productions. This time around Ed and Eric joined up with Dennis their new bassist and new lead guitarist Jake. Jake and Dennis brought an additional force to the band and made them complete. With this new record in their pocket TOT is ready to take over NewEngland.
Where to start! It's power packed and head pounding metal leaves you wanting more. Songs mostly dealing with vises, loss and anger, you can really feel all of it. 12 songs in total, this is a great record. Starting out with "Addicted" just gives you a little taste of what this album is all about. Followed by a breath comes "Drunk River". Quite a dose of TOT. Moving to the middle of the album you come to "Tuesday" and "Brace Yourself". Then we launch into the larger part of this album. 62804 (Blindside the Blood line) an epic metal tune that keeps you engaged thru-out and is definitely is one of the bigger songs on the album. All the songs are pretty big in that sense and nothing is spoon fed, it is all rammed down your throat.. and thats a good thing. In one word, relentless. The album keeps you on your toes with your fist in the air and your head banging. No these guys are not signed by a label yet, but I don't think it will be long. Road Runner, Metalblade you guys watching / listening?
If your looking for some really good solid metal thats loud and in your face, Train Of Thoughts new album "Half Empty Independence" is your best bet. When released the album should be available in local stores like Newburry Comics and online via iTunes, CD baby and on the bands Official MySpace and Website.

WCNI radio in New London, CT
On this past saturday (May 20th) Train Of Thought invaded WCNI radio in New London, CT. We had the opportunity to play the new cd and play whatever songs we wanted. This is the playlist for that show. Thanks to Bob, The Godfather Of Metal, for putting up with our over-tired drunken stupidity and letting us be a part of his show. He's in our top friends under Asylum Metal Radio. Check him out, and most importantly, check his show out!!!!!
