Current mood:  ecstatic
Hello folks,
Rob Hughes (who has immediately become our favourite journalist in the whole world) has written a very nice review about the album in this month's Uncut magazine. We're chuffed to bits.
It's on page 96, which is the Americana section. But here it is below:

Glittering debut from Scottish sextet

Glasgow's State Broadcasters seem cut straight from a film by Bill (Gregory's Girl) Forsyth: bonding in the local library, starting up at someone's kitchen table, composing guileless songs about bunk beds and binoculars.  But this beautiful record, from the same label that broke Belle and Sebastian with 'Tigermilk', is an artful thing of deft ensemble playing.  There are spoors of American kindred spirits Lambchop and Dakota Suite in their delicate richness, setting nimble guitars, piano, strings and horns, right up to the pale his 'n' hers harmonies of Graeme Black and Gillian Fleetwood.  And it all unfolds so regally that you never want it to stop.  (4 stars)

Current mood:  crunk
February has been a curious little month for us. The album finished and pressed and just looking all lovely but not coming out until March 23rd! What to do? Well, read on my friends and you will surely agree we have not been idle.
We've recorded a couple of new songs 'Dusty Record Collection' and 'Outside The Bakery' they both sound pretty good. The first is probably the most poppy we've ever sounded so maybe that smash hit is just around the corner! 'Bakery' is wonderful, a quiet little song where you can really hear all the instruments: harp, banjo, piano, trombone and cello all sounding quietly, beautifully understated. For those of you that made it to our gig supporting Eagleowl you'll have heard these live for the first time. We hope you liked them!
Mention of Eagleowl reminds me of the gig a couple of weeks ago. It was such fun and a great relief to finally play with them. They are a band we've long admired and have been trying to gig with for ages so we're happy that it finally happened. Bart from the band is a true legend. One of these guys who is so passionate about music. A kind and gentle man too. We hope our paths will cross again.
We also had our TV debut in February, our appearance on BBC Alba flagship music show Rapal was a curious egg. We actually did this way back in September last year. I remember feeling a little nervous about how it would look and sound when it finally aired but I think it was ok. I mean, we've played better it's true, but considering it was our first time ever in a tv studio and we hadn't really practised too much beforehand I think we came across not too bad. I think it'll be on BBC 2 sometime soon so we'll let you know if and when that happens.
Last week we did a radio session for BBC 6Music, it was the Marc Riley Show but he was on holiday so the lovely Rob Hughes was hosting. It was an amazing experience for us and we think it went pretty well. Rob was so nice to us, he likes a lot of the same stuff as us so hopefully we left him with nice memories. The other guys in the studio, Peter, Chris and Riley were super nice to us too. It makes such a difference to a nervous wee band from Glasgow when the people doing the sound are so confident, relaxed and friendly. I hope they ask us back sometime!
It was my birthday the day of the session so it was an interesting way to spend it. I missed not being home with my wife but it was an invaluable experience for the band and we got loads of good feedback. We also met Manchester legend Vinny Peculiar when we were down. He has written something extraordinarily nice about us on his latest myspace blog, I'd urge you all to head over his way and listen to his wonderful music. A huge thank you must also go to our chum Robbie, not only is he a lovely bloke who sings nice songs but he's a top bus driver, his contribution to the Manchester road trip was invaluable.
So, I guess we now just prepare for the album release proper. It can be bought as a download already if you want to. The CD version is coming out on March 23rd.
We are having an album launch gig on Thursday March 19th at Sloans Ballroom in Glasgow. Please come along if you can, it's going to be free entry and we're going to have lots of nice things happening as well as live music from us, our old friend robbie macinnes and some other special guests. Sloans is a magical venue so we are delighted to be having our gig in it. Hope you can make it.

Current mood:  blustery

It gives me great pleasure to announce that our debut album on Electric Honey Records is finished and is slated for a February 2009 release.

The 11 song album is called 'The Ship and the Iceberg' and, as well as great music, features amazing photography and artwork from our old pals Balehouse Photography.

The track listing is....

1. Ivor Cutler suggests we join the Noise Abatement Society...

2. Let's Make T-Shirts

3. Archaeological Dig

4. The Tenderness of wolves

5. Grass stains

6. Archie's Tears

7. My binoculars

8. After the fight

9. ...and then we join the Noise Abatement Society

10. Our favourite park

11. The Ship and the Iceberg

We've worked very hard on this recording and feel very proud of it. Feels a bit strange right now, kind of nervous about it all. We just hope that people like it and cherish it as much as we do. There will be more detail to come in the next wee while but, in the meantime, we'd just like to say thanks to everyone who has helped us get to this point.

Best wishes one and all.

PRESS RELEASE

Issued: 07/05/2008

For Immediate Release

The State Broadcasters Debut Single for Electric Honey Released

Glasgow six piece The State Broadcasters are proud to announce the release of their debut single for legendary student run record label Electric Honey in May 2008. The single 'Let's Make T-Shirts' is currently available on 7 inch vinyl through the bands own website www.thestatebroadcasters.com and from all good independent record stores.

The single follows on from the warmly received self released and now sold out 5 song EP back in December 2006. Mixing a unique lyricism with wide ranging musical instrumentation including, harp, piano, banjo, cello and trombone the sound perfectly encapsulates the broad influences of each band member. From The Smiths to Lambchop, Tom Waits to ancient traditional folk music, the songs of The State Broadcasters endure long after the record has stopped spinning.

"Let's Make T-Shirts is destined to be one of my singles of the year." - Gideon Coe 6 Music

'Displaying a sense of the absurd in lyrics like, 'I really liked your Bunk Beds' that would have seemed right at home on the soundtrack of the film "Gregory's Girl"…Heart warming stuff. I think I need a hug.' - blues bunny.com

'The gentle, folky melancholy of 'The State Broadcasters EP'. Swoonsome and touching, the Glaswegian five-piece produce a sonorous blend of Americana and Scottish folk which, although understated, will melt the stoniest heart. Great stuff.' - The List

'The sense of warmth and comfort, coupled with a mix of honest yet covert lyrics adds to the impression of a band relaxed with their own talent. [like] Teenage Fanclub on a midnight beach in LA that can be only be a good thing.' - Is This Music?

The band have been building a reputation as a popular live band around Glasgow for the last few years, receiving a Danny Kyle new band award at Celtic Connections festival 2006 and sustaining a loyal and ever growing fan base since.

Electric Honey is one of Glasgow's foremost small record labels famously releasing Belle and Sebastian's debut LP and also putting out early singles by Snow Patrol, Biffy Clyro and most recently the Stuart Maconie endorsed Wake The President.

The State Broadcasters are proud and honoured to follow in the footsteps of such great Scottish bands and will be continuing to develop with Electric Honey throughout 2008. An album release is pencilled in for later in 2008. For now, 'Let's Make T-Shirts' is a fine introduction to the latest in a long line of exciting, original talents from Glasgow.

I had the pleasure of seeing Josh Riitter live last night in Edinburgh. It’s the first time I’ve seen him and it was one of the best gigs I’ve been to in ages. What a great band he has! Also, the wonderful Dawn Landes was the support act. Her latest album ’Fireproof’ is a cracker!

Has this been the longest, coldest winter ever or what? Well, despite the chill we haven’t been idle so I feel the need to update you.  I guess we don’t blog often so this is a rare treat for anyone that might stumble upon this.

The main news? Well, we’ve signed with the legendary Glasgow label Electric Honey and will be releasing our debut single on 7 inch vinyl (!) with them in April. The single is going to be ’Lets Make T-Shirts’ and the b-side will be an acoustic version of ’Silver Sons’. Obviously, we are delighted to be putting this out through Electric Honey and we’d like to thank all at Stow College for putting so much faith in us. We’d especially like to thank Willie Bolland who first put us forward to the label. What a lovely man!

Hopefully, we can follow in the footsteps of some of the other great bands who started out releasing music on EH. Most recent signings Wake The President have certainly set a high standard.

After the single we hope to be putting an album out in October/November. The recording is nearly done so we’ll be busy mixing, track listing and thinking of a title over the next wee while.

I rather like the idea that we are releasing the single at the start of spring and then the album just at the end of autumn. Nice book ends to the summer.

There is also some talk of a new Wendy House album with some new residents as well as some old familiar faces. Hopefully this will happen during the summer sometime as we miss our Wendy House chums.

On the gig front, we are excited to be supporting DeVotchka at King Tuts on Sunday 6th April then we have a gig at Maggie May’s on May 22nd to celebrate the launch of the single. We hope you can make it along.

Once you’ve finished reading this you should pick the Paul Auster novel ’The Book Of Illusions’. It’s really something.

now the thing is there is a debate.... should it be 'let's make t-shirts' or should it be 'let's make tee-shirts!'

we at broadcasters hq are obsessed with tiny little details - that's why it takes us so long to do stuff. anyway, let us know what you think.

in the meantime there is an early mix version of this song on our myspace for your listening pleasure. hope you like it.......
