John Elmquist is the composer of some of the most compelling new music in Chicago. His band, HardArt groop, is a small orchestra that features incredible local musicians ( Jo Ann Daugherty, Jim Gailloretto, John McLean, Neil Alger, Mitch Paliga, Zach Brock, Andy Baker, Larry Beers, etc.). It is essentially an ensemble of soloists. I'm very fortunate to have played in this amazing band under the direction of a true musical visionary. John's music encompasses everything: classical, jazz, rock, country and western, world, folk, etc.. All of these styles coalesce into one original voice with a true intention. John is also a gifted songwriter and clever wordsmith. His lyrics run the gammut from biting social commentary to the sweetest, emotionally devastating observations. Then, there is the ever-present element of good humor. Some of the songs are truly hilarious! I'd say that the over-all character of the music and it's presentation ranks with some of the finer moments of Frank Zappa, but it certainly doesn't stop there.
HardArt groop performs twice a year with each concert featuring new material. The concerts take place at Ebenezer Lutheran Church, where John is the music director. Recording sessions immediately follow. All of the music is beautifully captured by Brian Schwab and Vijay Tellis-Nayak at Curried Bagel Studios. HardArt groop has eight cds to it's credit and I play on the two most recent recordings: "Cash Cow" and "Bird and Foot".
