So after being ranked in the top 5 female slam poets in the world.. (whatever that means) My poetry glands are salivating!  The Women of the World Poetry Slam was one of the most moving experiences that I have had in slam in my entire eleven years of professional poetry.

Blog by Panama Soweto.....

We had a super successful weekend. We rocked the mic Friday night at Cafe Cultura, opened up for the father of Hip Hop, Dj Kool Herc on Saturday at Bar Standard, took the main stage at the BlackArts Festival and won the 40 ounce regional competition (a victory we share with Denver's Minor Disturbance Team:)) BTW those poets are absolutely amazing. Overall we raised some coin for our efforts, but still need more support. Our team CD is selling well and we have been blessed by the generosity of so many wonderful people. We have a few more features before we leave and all of us are eager to get to Madison. Bobby is a beast, he is handling the business end of our organization like a mafia Don. I feel like his skipper. Together we make a great team. Ayinde is our center, his level headed and balanced demeanor has shaped many a night. Bianca is our straight edge, a measurement of our progress, honest yet motherly with our delicate egos. Original Woman has solicited smiles when there were none to begin with. She has the heart of a lion. We so need her on this team. Lucifury is our warrior, willing to do whatever it takes, as long as it doesn't take past 10pm, and his courage is unmatched. but there is work yet to be done... I (Panama) will be out of town this weekend and next weekend, Ayinde is gone next week and then it's off to Nats, so our team is going hard on the practices. And we are still writing! At this point we should be polishing pieces, but new ideas keep forming and the excitement of new combinations, staging and concepts is contagious. We also enjoy each other's company which is a blessing and have more in common with each other than any of us could have previously imagined. I don't know what this year will yield but I am certain of growth. There can be no life without decaying matter, and there has been plenty of both to this point.

Dear friends,

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce Denver's finest poets, the slamNUBA team. slamNUBA is a competitive performance poetry event sponsored by the Pan African Arts Society and certified by Poetry Slam International, which is an organization that arranges an annual National Poetry Slam. The Pan African Arts Society is an award-winning arts and social change organization that has been serving the Denver community for over ten years. In addition to slamNUBA, its projects also include Cafe Nuba, an award-winning open mic poetry set, and the Denver Pan African Film Festival.

In 2006, Denver won the National Poetry Slam, and in 2007 the slamNuba team placed fourth in the nation. This year, the National Poetry Slam will be held August 3-9, 2008 in Madison, Wisconsin. We will be competing with 75 poetry slam teams from across the United States, Canada, and France.

Of course, this requires a tremendous commitment from all of the poets and organizers involved, who not only prepare for months to have the material and stamina to compete, but also to raise enough funds to travel and to participate in the competitions. The slamNUBA team is diligently working on fundraising to cover travel expenses to and from the National Poetry Slam, and would like to formally ask you to help us get there and make our hometown proud.

Your tax-deductible contribution will help the team to participate in both the National Poetry Slam as well as regional competitions. As a token of our appreciation, we would be happy to provide you with a copy of the team's audio CD as well as the slamNUBA Team documentary DVD.

I hope that we can count on your support for the slamNUBA team, and will gladly answer any questions that you have about our upcoming plans and performances. If you would like to make a donation please contact me at 202-215-1236.

Thank you for your consideration,

Nitche Ward... The Original Woman and the Slam Nuba Family
