Info:
Tom Real & The Rogue Element Present Disco Of Doom EP 1
Passenger Records:

Rising out of the belly of the underworld comes Disco of Doom, the brand new project from award-winning production and DJ duo Tom Real & The Rogue Element. Spawned from the depths of their monthly on-demand show on leading internet radio station Samurai FM, everything brought forth from the loins of this duo will for ever more bear this accursed name.

The Disco Of Doom is a place of unspeakable depravity from whence, once every cycle of the moon, Tom and Rogue deliver a twisted monthly mix featuring nought but the most reprobate of new releases, filthy new productions from their very own Dungeon of Doom, and exclusive guest mixes from other degenerates who are inspiring the duo or who are just well, rocking tings up proper.

Now the duo have signed a pact with the forces of darkness (AKA Passenger Records) and the time has come to prepare yourselves for the debut Disco Of Doom EP, which is imaginatively titled EP 1 as it is the first of many of Satan's wild love tools of destruction and will be unleashed amongst you mere mortals this September.

With the vinyl release featuring two tracks kicking off with The Click a ragga-tinged, acid drenched, drum'n'bass inspired weapon of darkness ably abetted by Loud & Clear on the flip featuring a well-known UK radio star of the 80s on vocals and a breakdown to send you into hell without a return ticket. Mwwoooo haaa haaa haaa etc.

If you're rolling with the new school the digital release will also feature a very special Fucking Zombie Remix of lead track The Click which sees Tom and Rogue get fruity with the bass and reworking the beats to deliver an alternative ending, a 'happy' finish if you will.

As if this were not enough, quake helplessly and soil yourselves at the prospect of back2back Disco Of Doom DJ dates as the pair depart on a quest with but one purpose - to devastate dance floors across the UK, Europe and beyond.... you are all well and truly doomed!

Hi everyone

Just a quick note to you all, I have at last written some new original material after a long hiatu to, concentrate on DJing, mixing other people's work, and of course have a spot of personal upheaval; what hiatus would be complete without it. You can preview the new tracks on my player, and they are scheduled for release fairly soon. The second studio album is hmmm-mmf, about halfway done and I plan to have it finished it during what passes for summer in this country....

stay tuned for further info

Current mood:  pensive
The topic is addressed in detail here:

http://www.hse.gov.uk/research/rrpdf/rr517.pdf

In all fairness I may have jumped the gun a bit on the previous blog, and made a couple of assumptions, but that's what blogging when drunk will do for you. It does seem that the HSE is aware that productions (ie concerts/club nights) rely on high levels of volume as part of the experience. The actual figure for the safe exposure limit is 87dB - pretty low, although thereafter it gets a bit confusing as to what that figure actually means and who it is designed to apply to - the report talks about sound engineers and musicians rather than DJs, although I would assume that you should read musicians for DJs in this case as the exposure periods are similar, give or take half an hour.

It does mention the possibility of turning down overall sound in cases where the performance will not be affected, but I suppose the question is, who gets to decide whether or not the quality of performance is compromised - the artists/engineers, or HSE representatives? As long as the majority of control is left in the hands of the people involved in the event, fine; it's when external bodies stick their oars in it gets problematic...

so we'll see what happens....

Hi everyone

Not long, then, until the smoking ban. As a smoker, I can't say I'm totally happy with it, but non-smokers go clubbing as well, so there you go; after all, ours is an egalitarian society: it's our choice to smoke, but it's not a non-smoker's choice whether or not they inhale a smoker's smoke, blah blah.

However, for me the smoking ban has now been rendered largely obsolete, in light of reading about this noise thing. The smoking ban is problematic to a degree but not disastrous. Club culture can and will recover from it, and us filthy lung cloggers can just give up if it comes to the crunch. These impending noise laws, however, represent an enormous threat to what most people reading this blog live for, whether for enjoyment or for livelihood or both.

Isn't anyone else concerned by the fact that, despite we supposedly live in one of the most advanced democracies in the world, this legislation has just been announced, without recourse to anyone who is actually a member of the demographic it pertains to? It's suddenly just going to happen. End of.

These laws are going to all but KILL clubbing and much of the live music industry. Do we want to change the clubbing/concert experience into a sterile, anaemic environment in which people exchange pleasantries over 3% proof beer with the music as background noise? An entire cultural movement that has been built up over decades, spawned countless subcultures, and on which hundreds of thousands of people are reliant on for their livelihoods, will be effectively decimated. I can listen to the mealy-mouthed arguments about the risks of people's hearing being damaged, etc etc etc, but, to be blunt, fuck off. People don't have to come and work in nightclubs, and even then they can always wear earplugs - alot easier than say, wearing respiratory gear to escape the negative effects of other people's smoking. As I've heard rightly pointed out, the very purpose of clubbing, and rock concerts, is to enjoy music at as volume at which it can be felt as well as heard. I've always thought that a big part of living in a democratic society was my right to not always do what others thought was good for me. Stop me if I'm wrong there.

And if the legislators are so concerned about our health, and with reducing the parameters for harm that we can encounter as a result of various aspects of our lifestyles, why aren't they - by way of example - limiting road speeds to 10 or 20 mph, at which the vast majority of accidents will be non-fatal? I know that in reality that is a ludicrous concept, but the principle remains. If you want to try and nanny people, you can't just do it where you think it's going to be easiest.

I'm not a conspiracy theorist, I don't think it's part of an evil scheme to turn us all into mindless, compliant drones, and I don't subscribe to all the facile rubbish about the government wanting to stop people expanding their minds etc by not going to raves; people expand their minds by reading books, or watching documentaries, or by travelling or engaging with people with whom they would not normally have social contact; not by getting twatted and listening to repetitive music in dark rooms. However I cannot for the life of me see the logic behind any of this, other than a pathological need to exercise control, to be seen taking action of any kind, along the path of least resistance. No one with a vested interest in the music industry, recreational or professional, will see any good coming of these laws, so what the slippery fuck has it got to do with anyone else? As far as I see it, this is a law being formulated for a section of the population by people who have no understanding or contact whatsoever with the demographic on which it will have the most critical effect.

I've had conversations with other people about this, and they say 'I can't see it going through', but it will do unless people kick up a fuss about it, instead of just rolling over and expecting others to do something about it as has been the case with so many other decisions taken in our name recently. How many people, other than club owners for example, are actually aware of this stuff and how soon it will take effect? I'd say it would be pretty important to make sure the facts are circulated through as many channels as possible, as soon as possible. Feel free to copy and paste this blog into any forums you frequent - if you think the issue is important enough, that is.

Well that was interesting.

I have to be honest and say that while I did kind of expect a nomination, I categorically did not expect three and neither did I expect to take an award, let alone two; I thought that either the Stantons or Madox would walk off with best producer and Evil 9 would take the remix.Winning an award like this is an interesting concept really, because the more I think about it the more it seems slightly odd. Who is the best tennis player in the world? Roger Federer, because he wins nearly everything. Who is the fastest man in the world? Don't know actually, but it's whoever wins the most races. Thing is you can say who is the best in these contexts because there is only one parameter. You can't even really say who is the best footballer in the world... people might say Ronaldinho, but stick him at centre half and see how he manages that.

My point is that music, and art in general, is about as subjective as it can be; there are infinite parameters, and these parameters shift between person to person, so there really is no 'best' in the customary sense of the word. I hope that doesn't sound unappreciative, or that I am belittling the award, because it would be an understatement for me to say that I am hugely honoured and happy for my work to have connected with so many people; to get this kind of affirmation is frankly amazing; the simple fact that Breakspoll exists is fantastic for the scene as a whole, and the event seems to get more professional and high profile every year. I'm just trying to keep a little perspective for myself. So here's to the other nominees, all of whom I have massive respect for and whose records I will continue to be jealous of and wish I had written, and to all the other hugely talented producers who were inexplicably excluded from proceedings (in my personal opinion special mention here must go to the Bodysnatchers, Chris Carter, Santos, Meat Katie and Si Begg in particular) and again a massive thanks to everybody who voted for me!!

Plus I think a special mention is in order to Mike and Tim who each year put in a frankly insane amount of work to keep the Breakspoll thing going. Cheers fellas!!
