we really like this one so we share it:
Absolutely Blinding Music Email By: Orr The deluge of absolutely blinding music continues to flow out of Germany unabated. Whether it is forward-looking techno or equally forward looking jazz inflected dance music (let's not split hairs about genre), the tide is not losing its momentum. This week I have a compilation album called Members Of The Trick on the Sonar Kollektiv label. A trio of Berlin pranksters called Trickski -- not Tricksie 'cos that's the name of your cat – assembled this fine body of work and it bears the usual stamp of German excellence. These Trickski geezers are fond of squelchy, funky and groovy dance music that crosses a number of generic borders and leaves you feeling rather gratified to say the least. Rumor has it their party in Berlin, simply named The Weekend Club, is a bit of a sweaty, nasty clusterfuck, where all manner of badness goes down. Y'all like the sound o' that eh? I'm not sure if it's still happening but if you look for 'em on Lastfm or on myspace their bio mentions this den of iniquity and the type of soundtrack that gets thrown out at these questionable dos.
They seem to gravitate towards the house and techno side of things but they also have a bit of a penchant for slow –but still nasty – grooves and a pinch of soul and jazz in the mix. I mean why not? You can't be robotic all night, you gotsta take a leaf out of Ron Hardy's book and know when to bring everyone back to the spiritual side of things for a minute before chucking them into the phuturistic bidness again. Well, this eleven-track collection shows how Trickski do it, and though they're not called Tricksie they still know how to get tricky avec les tunages (that there's genuine Franglish there pardner).
There are tunes with squelchy, farty noises, ones with jazzy pianos and others that have German blokes talking about disco dancing related subject matter. If any, or all three, of these criteria are of interest to you or if you're inclined to garner unrelenting pleasure from any one, or two, of these elements then I'd recommend getting your sweaty mits on this when it drops. Unfortunately, I neglected to contact the publicist to find out when it's released, but I'd take an edumacated guess at early April. "But what about the f!%&ing music?" I can sense you all scream. Yes, the tunes are rather nice. The first number, "4 Members Only," by Leroy & Darnell is only one minute and fifty four seconds long, but you're left wanting -- no, gagging -- for more as it has one mean ass bassline and, at ninety two beats per minute, radiates a Baldelli type aura which is great for kicking proceedings off.
Another cool thing about this collection is that it is not mixed, so you get the tracks in all their glory as their creators intended. This is especially pleasant if you're impatient – like me – and jump forward to track six, "All I Want" by Future Beat Investigators; a fantasmic mélange (sounds naughty doesn't it?) of dubby techno touches, teutonic chanting and chunky, metallic keys, that sounds like Basic Channel in a head on train crash with a Juan Atkins mix of Inner City while Holger Hiller puts down his binoculars and takes notes. Simply put, it's rather fucking banging, to say (or think) the least (or the most even). Tracking this down and then jacking it up would be sage plan of action.
Another sage choice would be to skip back to track four which is a track called "Paperbitch," by Trickski themselves. It has a big, chunky, obnoxious bass line, slicey, glitchy effects, gurgly bits and a kick drum that sounds like a lead filled basketball bouncing off a back pack full of soggy cornflakes. Mmmmm, soggy cornflakes, mmm "All Woman," by Skwerl Feat. Hubert Tubbs is track eight and it comes across like lush, clean German techno rubbing up against some dirty Chicago warehouse doings while featured vocalist -- and member of Oakland's finest, Tower of Power -- Mr. Tubbs takes his cues (and maybe his Ps too) from Sylvester and Darryl Pandy. Very nice indeedio, as is "Keep Control (Pantha Du Prince Remix)" by Solumun – who recently made an appearance on The Future Sound of Jazz volume 11, I believe.
This is a dreamy slice of textured, abstract house that indulges a definite lysergic mood and takes things in an aquatic direction. Electronic psychedelia that will drive you round the bend(s), you could say. So, I would wax even more lyrical and get even trickier about Trickski but enough smoke has been gently projected up their beautifully formed posteriors. All that needs to be said is that there's a reason why Carl Craig used their track "Sweat," on his Fabric mix and there are eleven more reasons on this CD why their production and track selection are pretty damned on point. When this one drops, drop everything and get one. K.

hey there! due to technical mistakes our latest track "lost tape" is digitally being sold as Solomuns "White Rose" or "Black Rose". These two tracks are on the flipside of MOTT09. "Black Rose" & "White Rose" are great tracks and Solomun is a really, really cool kid - no doubt about it but for us it is being very very bad promotion to see our "lost tape" on position 4 of the Beatport Deep House Charts (one out of many digital shops, but probably the most important one) sold and promoted under a different name. We have tried to change this for a week already but somehow things seem to go too slow in this fast digital world. it is increadible! So: if you see "Lost Tape" (in the player) being sold under Solomuns name, please feel free to comment it in the shops.
Thanks a lot for the support!

TRICKSKI's successful 12" series draws to a close (?) with another sensational single including their own track Lost Tape and Black Rose by SOLOMUN. Sonar Kollektiv recording artists TRICKSKI have masterminded the entire Members of the Trick series which culminates this summer in the MOTT compilation CD (SK155CD).
TRICKSKI are surely the hottest DJ duo from Berlin. Also known to their friends as YANNICK LABBE and DANIEL BECKER, they have fast been making a name for themselves over the last year and especially with their successful Members of the Trick series for which they have done all the A+R and discovered quite a few goodies that have been totally unknown before. Their biggest hit to date is the classic from 2005 Sweat (SK063) which CARL CRAIG licensed for his Fabric mix (Fabric25). Their latest track, Lost Tape, available exclusively on MOTT09, is a sublime slice of hypnotic house that just pushes like a train. The well timed break and a slow but powerful drive gives this track an old school feel. Lost Tape is not about peektime only but more about providing a house dj-set with a deep and solid basic. Lost Dub , the stripped down version is focusing on nothing but the groove. One of TRICKSKI's great A+R discoveries over the course of the Members... series has been Mladen Solumun AKA SOLOMUN. Trickski charted his Tagesschau as their no. 1 for two months in a row and signed him right away. He is a passionate DJ coming from the heart of Bosnia. For four years Mladen has been hosting his own club night "DIY", out of which has grown his DIYnamic label through which he has released six EPs of his to date. SOLOMUN hit the Sonar Kollektiv scene with the last Members... single and his track Keep Control. Black Rose is a masterpiece of deep house with strings and keys coming together over a superbly chilled beat. It is available here in two mixes. one deep cut that just keeps the mood and one that is presenting Black Rose's amazing hook in the way it deserves. Both exclusive versions bring the original track, featured on the members… compilation, to club level. TRICKSKI obviously believe in SOLOMUN a lot that they should include not one but two of his tracks on their compilation CD and put his new tune together with their own on the latest installment of the Members of the Trick 12" series. TRICKSKI have managed to set an incredibly high standard with this pioneering series. Number nine in the series is another in a long line of great singles. And with positive feedback towards the 12" series from such big name DJs as Carl Craig, DJ T and Phonique, one can only hope that it won't be long until the second Members of the Trick series gets going.
Feel free to leave us a comment about the 12". Thanks.

With their first couple of releases in 2005 TRICKSKI quickly won the respect of big names such as GILLES PETERSON, TIEFSCHWARZ, CARL CRAIG, DJ T, PETER KRUDER and of course JAZZANOVA. TRICKSKI's hugely successful 12" series for Sonar Kollektiv, Members of the Trick, now culminates in a compilation CD featuring the members so far represented on the maxis. TRICKSKI aka YANNICK LABBE and DANIEL BECKER have shown with the MOTT series that their skills lie not only in DJing and producing - they also have a talent for A+R as their Members... series has brought to light some brilliant up and coming stars.
Detroit's LEROY & DARNELL, who had the first MOTT 12" Get Rich Or Die Trying, also set the ball rolling on the compilation with a new exclusive track, 4 Members Only. This is a great little hip-hop intro for the comp. Next up it's IRFANE'S funky beat number Thank You Daniel which really pics up the tempo of the comp and sets the pace. IRFANE is part of OUTLINES who just released their album Our Lives Are Too Short on Sonar Kollektiv. The first appearance on this CD by TRICKSKI themselves comes in the form of their stomping tune Move Me, which is really helped along by the live drums from HANS BLITZ who also drums for NEONMAN and has previously worked with MOCKY and HEADMAN. The raw leadvocals by Yannick Labbé and beats give the track something of an LCD SOUND SYSTEM feel to it. The following two tunes are also TRICKSKI original productions. Paperbitch is an exclusive track that is available for the first time to hear on the Members of the Trick compilation CD. It is dark house that takes in elements of noise and old school to make up one bitch of a track. After Paperbitch, and completing a little TRICKSKI triptych of tracks comes Powerhorse, which careful listeners will know from Members of the Trick 07 (SK146). With typically TRICKSKIan synth rave sounds and slow kicking house beats, there's a lot of horse power driving this tracks groove. To contrast all this power there they added a melancholic and lonely jazz piano which gives this track a unique touch. Finish project FBI (FUTURE BEAT INVESTIGATORS): a collaboration between LIL' TONY (NUSPIRIT HELSINKI), ROBERTO RODRIGUEZ (TRACK N FIELD) and KIMMO OKSANEN (ACID KINGS), are represented with their track All I Want taken from MOTT06 (SK136) Discomedusa. All I Want is a crispy goove number just right for prime time. Filtered sequencers, a sprinkling of vocals, minimalist bass lines and the strings that come in at the end create a kind of afro-tech feeling. TRICKSKI member YANNICK LABBE's solo production Gallieni, which originally appeared in 2004 on Cabinet records and more recently was also part of the MOTT series on Le Coq Sportif (MOTT05 - SK131) provides a lovely breakdown midway through this powerful compilation. In the words of YANNICK LABBE himself: „Gallieni, reflects the style you can also hear in TRICKSKI. It rolls across the dancefloor and nobody present can resist the groove." YANNICK is succeeded by Vienna resident SKWERL whose track All Woman came out on MOTT04 in november 2006. Former TOWER OF POWER singer HUBERT TUBBS' vocal performance lifts this track to become a real Detroit style soul infused builder. Keep Control, by Hamburg DJ/producer SOLOMUN, is a prime slice of sensitive club house since it is represented in the subtile PANTHA DU PRINCE REMIX. TRICKSKI's faith in this young producer is obvious from their inclusion of not one but two of his tunes on the Members of the Trick compilation. The second of which, Black Rose, is also due to come out on the penultimate instalment of the 12" series, MOTT9 and is the perfect finishing track for a late summer compilation like this one. Before Black Rose however, they still find time to squeeze in their own hit Grace - taken from The Bat EP, MOTT02 (SK110); one year on from original release, this track still sound as spine-tinglingly fresh, dark and cineastic as ever. But that's not even the end of the tale as a hidden bonus track takes the shape of the TRICKSKI remix of FORSS' track Journeyman. The original came out on FORSS debut album Soulhack (SK006CD) but this remix was previously only available on a Japanese release and is the first ever remix that YANNICK LABBE and DANIEL BECKER ever collaborated on, so something of a rarity.
With artwork once again by DANIEL BECKER's own design agency, Goldener Westen, and almost every track being available for the first time on CD, in special versions this compilation is ideal for fans of MOTT thus far as well as people who are still looking to find out what TRICKSKI are all about. This round-up of the Members of the Trick story so far shows just what a high standard TRICKSKI have managed to set with this pioneering series. And listening to the compilation, one can only hope that it won't be long until the second Members of the Trick series gets going.

With their first 12" releases on Sonar Kollektiv, the producer/DJ duo TRICKSKI gained international attention in no time at all. Big name DJs such as GILLES PETERSON, MARK PRITCHARD, CARL CRAIG, PETER KRUDER and of course JAZZANOVA were all impressed with the fresh, cheeky and simply incomparable style the TRICKSKI members YANNICK LABBÉ and DANIEL BECKER are responsible for. TRICKSKI were the obvious choice to create a new, club orientated series for Sonar Kollektiv. The goal was to squeeze the very wide musical spectrum of Sonar Kollektiv into a series of club tracks that would cause a stir in the DJ community. And so the unmistakable and quickly identifiable Member of the Trick concept was born. Following guest contributions from LEROY & DARNELL, SKWERL, MOVEMENTZ as well as FUTURE BEAT INVESTIGATORS, it's now up to TRICKSKI themselves to continue the series. The A side Drakkar integrates a touch of amusement - fair into the characteristically rough TRICKSKI sound. Drakkar is a powerful track that is, without a doubt, suited to the big dance floors. In case you wanna make people go 'round and round and round' at peaktime. Just imagine you'd go riding a rollercoaster instead of 'just dancing'. And once again, TRICKSKI deliver a slow track to all you cosmic lovers, at-home-chillers and peaktime-nodders on the flip. Powerhorse, the follow up tune to Grace, does justice to its name: a dirty bassynth driven, 105 bpm stomping culminates in some beautiful piano chords, and then rides on and on and on and… Yes, this is a perfect musical portrait of the powerhorse, this beautiful, strong animal that you can see roaming in the African savannahs. By the way, there's going to be one further 12" in the first Member Of The Trick series before it gets rounded off with a compilation in autumn - this crowning glory to the series will contain remixes and more exclusive material by TRICKSKI and their Member Of The Trick artists.
