bacon here. writing from the back seat of our freshly repaired and cozily cruising chariot, vance. we're heading south from chicago after a weekend full of wonder and delight at the ears and eyes festival. currently, i'm fielding phone calls in a last ditch effort to book tonight's show in saint louis after it was cancelled by the venue yesterday. this is crazy, living on the road and rolling with the punches as they fall. in almost every case, what begins as a seemingly crushing blow winds up being an opening for totally unexpected opportunities. the universe keeps on testing our meddle with these challenges and obstacles and if we respond with the right balance of active and decisive engagement and detached, intuitive flow then we are rewarded with a full technicolor display of the synchronous beauty of creative experience. we just have to remind ourselves of this when we're driving all day to a show that may or may not even happen or when we're broken down on the side of the road wondering if we'll have to cancel one of the biggest gigs of the tour.
that was a good one....ten minutes outside of bloomington, indiana vance started shuddering violently enough to arrest our journey out of concern for his well being. this was at 4pm saturday afternoon. things were not looking good for us making an 11 o'clock set in chicago. but after much deliberation, a visit from a suspicious but well intentioned highway patrolman, and a healthy dose of encouragement from an amped up and enterprising young tow truck driver we found ourselves rolling up to the hideout in chicago on a flatbed truck with air horns blaring and full disco light show in effect....just in time to set up and play to a packed house of some of chicago's best informed and most attentive music lovers. (sweet...our saint louis gig was just confirmed. unbelievable.) and the story gets even better. during our set in chicago, our buddy chuck happens to strike up a conversation with the owner of the club, tim. our predicament comes up and it turns out that tim's buddy joe runs a garage that specializes in van repairs for touring bands. so joe diagnoses the van on sunday afternoon while we're playing in the fallen leaves by lake michigan and has us back on the road by noon today. oh, and yesterday we just happen to be seated next to tim and his wife katie at a breakfast joint on the other side of town. this is the kind of stuff that makes you redefine coincidence.
sure we've been getting a little beat up on this tour but ultimately it's been our most ambitious and rewarding trip to date. we're continually blown away by the hospitality and generosity we're shown by these communities that we join for any given number of hours. the connections that we make on a nightly basis with friends old and new run so deep and are simultaneously so fleeting that our hearts sometimes feel like they're going to burst with joy and loneliness. huge love and thankfulness to everyone who has supported us on this journey. we feel that the musical experience is more relevant than ever before as an analog for the kind of cooperation and celebration that can exist in creative communities. let's keep pushing together to make this world and especially this country a more positive and conscious place to live.

Love loVe and more LOVE,

hey all. so...going in to this tour, we had great intentions of keeping you all informed of our adventures w/ daily (or at least weekly) blogs. but sadly, the nature of our existence on the road is that we barely have time to bathe and feed ourselves much less find an internet connection. so, here we are with a day off in santa cruz almost three weeks deep into the tour making our first attempt to convey to you the joy and hardship of our life as fledgling rock stars.

where to begin? how about the beginning? some of you surely know of our fourth band member, the humble and indispensible chariot, Vance. apparently Vance had some unspoken issues that needed to be dealt with going in to this trip. feath and brian had to stop and work it out with Vance on the very first leg of the journey. but after a night in a hotel in raton, NM, a bit of transmission work and a $300 rental van shuffle they were ready to rendez-vous with bacon in boulder for the tour kickoff and the three-day electronic joyride that was the communikey festival.

ahh...the communikey fest... what a beautiful and inspiring way to launch a D Numbers tour. our ears were so full of blips and pops, glitches and drones from the likes of pole, tipper and bruno pronsato that we couldn't wait to plug in and redistribute some of that bountiful inspiration.

so we left heading north brimming with love and music for a cold and dreamlike sojourn through the rockies. D Numbers is getting really good at just killing it for 10-20 people in snowy mountain towns. we're playing at the top of our game. now all we need is an audience.

we found our audience in pendleton, OR. it's one of those little towns that you've never heard of that's just full of kids ready to rock out. it was our first taste of the juice that was awaiting us as we approached the west-coast.

we've known for years that there's something very special about santa fe and the people that are drawn there but to see those same folks coming out in droves in portland or san francisco to support their new mexican brethren is to realize the strength of those bonds forged in the ol' land of enchantment. we keep getting the "wow...people never dance in this town" when our santa fe people come out to represent.

there are too many little stories to tell...playing a "bear bar" in san fran, brazenly cancelling a gig in san jose last night in favor of a 12 hr slumber...fixing a beer soaked drum machine at 3:30 in the morning after 10 shows in a row...we've done it all. oh, and boy did we party in the bay area. we were unstoppable... playing shows and raging it with old fiends and new until the wee hours and beyond. i think we're in love with san francisco and it's inhabitants.

so, i think i'm a bit typed out right now. we're going to the beach today. feath wants to fly a kite. oh, it's cinco de mayo too. fish tacos and margaritas for dinner tonight. feath mentioned green chile this morning and we all had a sigh of homesickness. from here we have seven more shows... no days off. this is a crazy and beautiful way to live. thanks for coming out to our shows and letting us sleep on your futons, for cooking us cheesy eggs, and soaking us in your hot tub. we love you all deeply and can't wait to see you again.

Hello,

I saw one of your shows in Santa Fe recently and was totally blown away. I realize that your group receives all kinds of strange comments from a variety of random fans, but allow me to say this:

The complexity of sound, rhythm and sophistication that are the D Numbers is as vast and amazing as the universe is itself. The energy of your live shows is something perhaps akin to finding Jesus. Being a musician myself and having reached spiritual heights while jamming with only one or two of my closest friends, it is inspiring to see a group who has taken that depth to a public level. I am proud to know that there exist such sonic-ly gifted lads hailing from the same Land of Enchantment that I come from.

Keep up the incredible work that you all do. I also am a photographer so if you need any shots done, I would be happy to work with you. I look forward to watching your success and hearing more of your wonderful eclectic musical concoctions

A surprisingly concordant blend of mathematical polyrhythms, minimalist glitch samplings, and sweetly tinkling keyboard and xylophone melodies, D Numbers occupy a very weird space between headphone electronica and angular, Tortoise-esque post-rock. Don't be surprised if the Santa Fe-based trio somehow lulls you into a daze and pulls you onto the dance floor in one swoop.
-suzanne niemoth - flavorpill.com

Paul Groetzinger's live drums supplied a time signature from outer space, while Ben Wright's guitar work grooved like Chris Squire on three kinds of acid and four kinds of funk. It was the strangest dance music I've ever heard. Seventy percent of the room couldn't help but rock their torsos in synchronicity with the trio; the other 30 percent, the musicians who'd stopped at the door, stumbled wide-eyed toward the stage like zombies, subconsciously lured by the specter of 7/4 time.

Lightparade is an expressive, danceable, and intricate mix of electronic, acoustic, and sampled sounds strung together into all sorts of mood-evoking textures. Wonder, possibility, and a host of other emotions came to mind when listening to their at times ambient approach to music making.
-dante colombo-lawrencian.com

'Psychedelic' is the first word that comes to mind upon spinning D Numbers' disc, Lightparade! Following closely on that word's heels is 'progressive'.
brendan dabkowski - chicago innerview

By its very nature, instrumental music tends to be more impressionistic than vocal music. With no words to get in the way, we're free to make records like Lightparade the soundtrack to a clear, bright snowy day, a rainy, inky black night, or a hazy summer afternoon. It's a testament to D Numbers' flexible musicality and ear for melody and tone that their debut record could be at home working within any of these contexts. Lightparade is a compelling and complex but immensely enjoyable first effort, and one that should win the band greater success.
Steve McPherson - reveille magazine (mpls)

Taking all of that into consideration, the title for the new record is actually quite apt — the light parade theme bobs to the surface in nearly every track. Think Disneyland's Main Street after dark but with a lot of young hipsters in the audience rather than young kids and maybe a mild dose of psychedelics flowing from the water fountains.
steven sawada - eugene weekly

Jazzy drums, bass, and keyboards simmer with sexy rock guitars and ambient samples in a frenzied creative stew that could serve as a memorable soundtrack to a sepia-toned film in your mind's eye
-Rob DeWalt -The New Mexican

"...and as I look around and see 50 college kids dancing their usually maudlin asses off while d numbers blasts through their sexy shimmering set, I can't help but think that every groove is essential, ancestral, related."

Current mood:  blessed
OK so texas is big. that's not news. the prarie, the SUV's, the feedlots and the wal-marts; they're all big...really big. but apparently, this supersizing of things extends all the way down to the level of people's hearts. the people we encountered (especially in deep ellum) treated us w/ something akin to unconditional love.

a few shining examples:

after booking our show at Club Dada in deep ellum (w/ gracious and self-indulgent encouragement from Hendrick's bass player, gregory), Amanda the illustrious booking agent, manager, marketing genius by day and aspiring local politician, went so far as to put us up in her beautiful just moved in to loft...a block from the club...w/ a gated parking lot for vance. and then, upon hearing that our saturday night show had fallen through she asked us to jump on her saturday night show at Dada...and paid us...both nights...and let us crash w/ her again along w/ port angeles, WA neo-classic rock band, The Lonely H...and is a saint....and has a dog named beano.

our buddy, "little" Sean street teamed it w/ flyers and posters all around lubbock and texas tech only to have 15 people show up for the gig at bash riprocks. those are the breaks, man. thank you so much.

so we go to find espresso and wi-fi in deep ellum and after one thwarted attempt, we end up at this place called murray st. coffee. we meet this guy john who's a local promoter and musician and immediately start rapping it down about all kinds of things...the biz and what not. 10 minutes later we're at his house having a beer and a smoke. then doug from Sunward (very cool band...check 'em out) shows up...good times continuing on...and on. then the barista from the coffee shop shows up to see us at Dada...and brings her whole family (mom, dad, sister) and it turns out she went to st. johns (in santa fe). then sunday morning (early) things are looking dire for our trip home. we're underslept and over-partied. we need coffee and not just any coffee will do. we go back to murray st. only to find that the shop is closed. but wait...there's the owner sitting on a couch enjoying his morning shot w/ a newspaper. he recognizes us from yesterday and jumps up to let us in. he continues to brew a fresh pot of coffee, fill our joemos...and our thermos...and load us up w/ scrumptious apple muffins and then refuses to charge us for it. what a saint. and he's playing trentmoller on the stereo.

we could go on like this. but you get it, right? deep ellum is one of those communities where people know each other and support each other, working together to create a fabric of existence that is colorful and strong. they're doing it well down there and we were honored to be welcomed in to that network. can't wait to go back.

god, i almost forgot. jonnana widner, our old and dear friend, and her girlfriend took us to dealy square. you know...where JFK was shot. it was heavy there. right on the knoll, where the kill shot was made, brian stepped in a huge pile of poo.

May I begin by wishing all of you a very healthy and happy new year.

12/01/07. We thought it would be a bad idea to play a show in Santa Fe the night before leaving on a riggerous musical road trip but we did it anyway. The potential energy at Swig during the final blow out party for the Santa Fe Film Festival was through the roof. There were probably 400 people in the club when we started with "Dead Things" and it couldn't have been going better until poof! we blow the breaker. After flipping it back on, we were able to get 90% of the way through "Xylem Up" before we tripped it again. This time it seemed to have broken Brian's looper. As you can imagine, the potential energy has shrunk quite a bit by this point. After managing to get through "Attalaya" and "Here" the looper turns on and we got to play "And How He Saved The World" before we had to stop. You might say that starting the tour with a flop is bad for lifeforce points (see summer blog).
12/02/07 The next night was in Boulder, CO. We were thrilled to have ultra-v.i.p. guests such as Andrea, Katehead and Dave, Traps, Kitty and Matty, Matthew Wellman and Scooter as well as Josh Wright And Bill Pils. Unfortunately, few other people at Mtn. Sun noticed that we were playing. There is nothing wrong with a paid rehearsal.
12/03/07 Exhausted at the start, we began our longest drive of the tour. 8 hours later in Lincoln, NE we found ourselves trying to ignore detour signs and running into an enormous dismantled bridge. After making our way around it we found that Box Awesome is at the center of bridge demolition ground zero. Box Awesome has not only the greatest venue name in the world, they also sell more Old Style beer than any other bar in Lincoln. Bravo chaps! Much thanks to Brenton, Alison, Jeremiah and Nick.
12/04/07 After the most beautiful drive of the tour (Missouri River... ahh) we may have eaten our worst meal of the tour in Lawrence, Kansas. Don't eat at The Mad Greek. blaich!. I had a pretty phenomenal game of pinball at The Replay Lounge while we waited about 2 hours for the other bands to show up. This is when we began to realize that the early band catches jack shit. Much thanks to 1,000,000 Light Years for rocking out and letting us leave his house.
12/05/07 In Columbia, MO we learned about the true rivalry between Mizzou and the Jayhawks as well as a history lesson on Chartreuse. After the show we had a freestyle session with Meredeth, A-Frame and J Gesus. You guys rule! Bacon busted his first flow and it was a beauty. "Everybody wants to feel good" -The Effects
12/06/07 We woke up to some van trouble and were so proud we were able to fix it ourselves. Some real Mcgiver shit. Then we went off to St. Louis to play at the Bluebird and hang with Egg. Emily's home cooking and Shawn's hospitality brought the life force points up. Ask us someday and we'll show you the cornhole set Shawn made for us. It lives in the van.
12/07/07 A long cold drive to Madison was greatly improved by the Cristopher Wilits record Surf Boundries. We arrive to The Annex wich was plastered with our posters and is a huge 400 person venue with a big stage and killer sound system. After five slow shows we were ready for a pumpin' night. It was a friday night in a college town and we got a write up in The Onion but we still ended up playing for about 15 people. Half of them were in the second band called The Drastics. They rule and went to play Ears and Eyes Festival the following night. p.s. Thanks for trying Darwin.
12/08/07 Arriving at KNUR in Chicago on the Northwestern University campus felt great. We had a blast playing in the studio and took 3 consecutive poops in their bathroom. Once we got to Peter and Leslie's pad we were home. A beautiful home, wonderful hosts, a sweet dog and wi-fi is a great rue for a night off soup to be remembered. We ate Chicago deep dish pizza and took a cab to The Subterranean. Other Planets were the highlight of what we caught. That night was called freedom.
12/09/07 From the moment we arose, it felt like game day. Having Elise Wise in the van gave us the strength of 10,000 men. A good breakfast and a great set from Zing! propels us in the right direction. To much great music at Ears and Eyes fest to mention. What a day it was. OK how 'bout mad props to Algernon, Matt Ulery's Loom, Silence of Surmire and all who played. To sum up our closing set at SubT, we killed it. It was so fun to play for so many great musicians and our sexy friends. Big ups to Alys, Mike, Mark, Danny and Fox. We love you Matt, Quinn and the whole Chi town contingent.
12/10/07 This day marked two never before happenings for D Numbers. Another artist joined us on tour (Actually, we just gave him a ride from Chicago to Grand Rapids to play one show. He rules. His name is Jeffery [The Great Mundane]) and we payed ten shows in a row (if you count the radio show). Big thanks to Selectronics for getting a bunch of his friends to come see the show and for letting both D Numbers and The Great Mundane crash at his beautifully thrashed house. A note about Grand Rapids, MI: If you like cheap diner food, go to the Grand Coney. Look up coney sauce on Wikipedia. It's a wierd, delicious midwestern thing.
12/11/07 Drop off Jeff. Drive to Milwaukee. Ev. Onda. Drink Sprecker. Ahh our first day off (even though we drove all fucking day.).
12/12/07 The gorgeous drive from Milwaukee to the twin cities affords one the opportunity to see the Wisconsin Dells which is a series of indoor water slides and casinos and fun parks and such. We found a cheese shop and cleaned them out. We arrived at Castle Greyskull fully charged with lactose and were promptly handed cans of Pabst. The six dwellers of the castle all were working overtime at a digital photo lab cranking out prints for christmas. It felt like a shifting tide at Castle Greyskull. The show in their basement was one of the most fun of the tour. Unicorn Basement, Baby Guts and Ouija Radio all killed it. We got to be a part of a true punk rock experience. Having no drive the next day (2 shows in Minneapolis) and our own private piece of carpet, we were able to sleep in.
12/13/07 Following a lead we got at the skull, fortune found us at The Wienery, a one man show greasy spoon. Our waiter/ cook/ dishwasher/ cashier served up eggs and potatoes so delicious it seemed he had made a deal with the devil. Across Cedar St. was The Nomad Pub, our next endeavor. The Nomad is a large bar with helpful staff, competent sound man and green room replete with Pabst tall boys. Things were looking good for D Numbers. We opened the show at around ten and played for over 100 people. This was the largest audience of the tour. A last minute addition to the bill was hometown hero Dosh. He does a solo looping set with Rhodes, drums and synth. It was nice to play with a fellow looper. Check him out if you ever get a chance. I doubt it's the last we see of him. Mel Gibson and the Pants closed it out and their electronics guy, Ryan our champion, fought for the hundred dollars the promoter promised us. All of the people we met in Minneapolis were incredible. What a place. Deep thanks to Winnie for letting us stay at her place. Maybe we'll run into each other next time.
12/14/07 On our drive to Kansas City, MO we stopped in Owatonna, MN for some much needed t.l.c. for Vance, our van (oil change and radiator flush). The gentleman ahead of us ask Bacon if we were in a band (something we get a lot) and promptly bought a CD. Happy van + random CD purchase = mega-lifeforce points. I'd be doing our drive an injustice if I didn't mention the serene beauty of Iowa's "Silos and Smokestacks National Heritage Area." We arrived at The Brick four hours before show time and were greeted with food and beer by Sheri, a real D.I.Y. club owner who used to employ our buddy Bone. We hoped for a good crowed on a friday night in a big city but the road has taught us not to expect anything. Our hopes were met. After playing for about seventy people we were able to enjoy a set by Nameless Numbers Headmen, a cool, unique, pop duo.
The events following the show deserve their own prime time miniseries but a paragraph in the blog will have to do. An enthusiastic young man named Yob complimented our sound and gave us directions to his house. The unsolicited "place to crash" is always the easiest option and why not party with a sassy young hipster who loves our music? Things got a little strange as we followed him home. He fishtailed and swerved all over the freshly snowed roads as if to show off. After pulling into his driveway and getting out of our van, Yob assured us that "no one will even know you're here." Was that supposed to make us feel comfortable? On the walk to the front door, Yob asked us if we liked amphetamines. "We usually just stick to coffee" Brian answered. Upon entry, we meet Yob's room mate and band mate Devan and their equally tweaked friend Craig. All is well as they play us some cuts from their latest disc. The music is good (they win best electronic band in K.C. every year even though no one goes to their shows.) Their band name is even better, One Million Tiny Tiny Jesuses, a euphemism for God's sperm. I can't say I felt calm when Devan began showing us his weapon collection. Knives and swords were busted out before the crown jewel, a double edged axe fit for Jason Voorhees. Their friend Craig assured us that this type of behavior was common place and we should not be scared. "You never know when there's going to be a zombie attack," said Devan. Just when we thought we had seen enough, Yob destroyed a well crafted, dining room chair but not without a fight. The final blow to the chair took its toll on Yob. While tossing the remains out the front door, he reopened a rather large gash on his right hand. "Does anyone care that I'm bleeding," he yelled. No one did. Devan packed a small bag which contained four deadly weapons and a few other essentials. He leaned over to Brian and whispered, "keep an inventory of the weapons. We keep them around for a reason," glancing at Yob. The idea of leaving seemed quite attractive at this point but we were exhausted, it was four in the morning and we were otherwise homeless. So, we all fell asleep with our shoes on (quick getaway in mind) and rested fairly sure that Yob had gotten it all out on the chair.
12/15/07 Not sure what we had experienced the night before we set off for Tulsa, OK. The drive through the Sooner State was sad and beautiful. An ice storm had ravaged the countryside a week before. Many were still without power. Almost every tree had snapped like a twig. D Numbers had never seen anything like it. We decided to get a motel that night after the trauma we had incurred the previous. Bacon napped as the Diplomat and I enjoyed a viewing of "The Two Towers." We felt like kings. The show at Sound Pony was awesome. The opening band, Ithica, played their first show and you'd never know it. Experimental pop at its best. The middle band, Callupsie killed it and were the reason people showed up. Bless them for telling their friends to stick around for D Numbers. Sound Pony being a small joint and the fact that it was packed, forced us to set up the gear outside in the 19 degree weather. After a nip of Maker's in the van, we played a great show to a glued audience. Afterwards we sold 7 shirts and 6 discs. That feels good. We like Tulsa.
12/15/07 One more show to go on our whirlwind tour of the midwest. Driving into Texas on our way to Amarillo the scenery started to look like the southwest. We were smelling the barn. We arrived at The 806 and were met with coffee and beer. Our not so old friends Jason, Bailey and Holly made us feel at home. While we were setting up our old buddy Mad Dog a.k.a. Pee Ma$ter, a piss artist, sauntered through the door with a crew of well dressed cohorts. Our good pals Jonathan and Shawn made it to the show after a horrible day. Texas trooper + ganja = we miss you little Shawn. After the show we followed Mad Dog to his Friends Skippy and Jam's house. Actually, it is a former bail bond office. This domicile made all others seem like the Ritz. Cigarette butts everywhere and the remnants of countless creative explosions. The smoke sent Brian to the car. He had had enough and I was getting close, believe it or not. Alas, he missed the big money party which involved an eruption of huge fake bills thrown all around. It was fun. Mad Dog and crew took off to go hot tubbing at their bosses house and left us to sleep peacefully among the butts.
Well I guess that paints a picture of our adventures up north. Thanks for reading. Love, Feathericci

Current mood:better late than never
we wrote this over a month ago, now we're posting it. we suck.

phew, where to begin?

right now we're kicking it with coulter in the columbia city section of seattle. our last bit of adventuring along the west coast. and it has been a motherfuckin adventure. from san diego to bellingham, been reppin it: for real.

being on tour is like a video game: a constant battle with your environs and a struggle to maintain one's life force. eating cheap food that feels good: raising the life force. spending too much money on food: bad for the life force. drinking inordinate amounts of tequila: good for the life force, at least until the morning. gear schleping: downer, playing a good show: big ups, camping: ups. seeing old friends: ups. spending time in rush hour traffic: huge downer. etc

we left off in San Luis Obisbo - Steynberg Gallery

michele and pocket productions are the shit. we were really nervous to play sunday night at 8pm, they managed to get us a great attentive crowd that listened all the way through the set and we made some new friends. plus, we had the honor of sharing the bill with Pit Er Pat from chicago: great musicians. great people.

The Bay - the Knockout/Stork Club

met up with our homie Del of the Public Image Delivery Service who threw videos for our sets from san fran to portland. not an easy task. had a great show down in the mission at The Knockout. lots of our peeps came out to represent and we made some new friends: Silian Rail and the Aimless Never Miss this show was truly a highlight. great bands. great crowd. and lots of old friends. boom. we had the oppurtunity to see the legendary Cup'o in rare (shit-housed) form, and we got to spend some time with lila, who is the sweetest. cruised to the beach in the morning, more time with the cups. more frisbee.

Stork Club - was a blast. got to see/hear inti: legend. and also crockett, who is the man, played a beautifully psychedelic set to start everything off. mad barbie dolls behind the bar (gotta really see it to understand), a huge dollhouse, and a sound engineer who recorded our entire set for us. (we'll put up a live track or two when we get home). brian received a very special voodoo package via crockett. we were gifted california state certified greens. and we raged it with until the light of the morning sun peeked over the city.

May 23rd - cheers - vacaville, ca:

best band name ever: We Prick You. that's who we opened for in this salt of the earth establishment. had the honor of crashing at ryan and lauren's house. word. they are the shit. not too many peeps have been able to hang tough with d numbers, but these guys had no problem. we miss you.

May 24th - bobolink music festival - belden , ca

like whoa. have you ever seen anything so heady in your entire life? well, maybe. but anyway, we learned a valuable lesson at this show: we are not a hippie jam band - phew! people always like to say that we are, but at this fest, we managed to clear the room and keep it that way throughout our two hour set. none of you have probably ever seen d numbers so surly as when we started tipping back our bottle of el jimador at this free love fest. chillin out with vance, talking mad shit, there was even some throwing of empty natty light cans (all of which were cleaned up of course), and some stealing of coffee, and some more shit talking. passed out in a field amongst the hippies and left as soon as we could. took a dip in the Feather River, then made our way up to ashland, OR.

May 25th - the mobius:

ashland is cute and we played in the most beautiful venue of the tour here. the mobius has a state of the art p.a. a highly skilled engineer to run it, plus four video cameras that are mixed live and webcasted for all of the world to see. just how many people came out to this amazing space on a saturday night to see d numbers? mmmm: 6 if you include the sound engineer, video guy, and marla, who ran the place.

Current mood:drunk. ecstatic. drained. invigorated.
well then, it has been quite an adventure since you've heard from us, but one constant remains; d numbers is having a wonderful time on the road.

so then, let's see

nighthawks/bootleg theater:

all our old school thugs came out to represent en masse. talking about some serious bust outs. incredible, they all made us feel so great. we did our best, and the peeps seemed to enjoy it very much. We Drew Lightning, our compañeros from santa fe, played after us. and then dj feathericci wrapped everything up. some moron stole the dip's cell phone off his keyboard: annoying, but eventually led to an interesting 3am phone conversation between the douchebag that stole it and the dip himself. said our goodbyes and went to drink scotch with tay and shmate. a perfect ending.

winston's - san diego/o.b.:

word. o.b. knows how to rock it. we played at Winstons, which, even though the local band canceled and it was under construction, was a great place to play. we played through a real p.a. and had a great sound engineer. we played to a super quality crowd of about 12 folks who listened to us the whole way through. loved having good sound and we played like champs. sold a lot of our sexy t-shirts and packed up after tequila shots. late night: rubenzo and elvia. fun! taped a note over the license plate for the cops not to ticket Vance, which led to some hearty belly laughs, but we moved him down to the surfer lot in the end and bacon faithfully slept in the passenger seat to guard our beloved van with his life.

our show at winston's brought us together with some amazing and generous souls. dave: treated us to a delicious breakfast and gave us huge smiles and hugs and tried for a long time to hook us up with a gig in seattle. quite the legend, we hope our paths cross again soon. then, our homie ben, who we know from santa fe treated us to a über fancy dinner at Thee Bungalow in o.b. like whoa, we were out of our element in such an establishment, and also overwhelmed by the generosity shown to us. delicious food and wine, then a chocolate mousse with a happy b-day wish to brian (which brought a little tear to his eye), hugs and thank yous, and we took off for some beach camping. however, serendipity was on our side and we ended up crashing in malibu with sat paul and jeni. so good to see them. more laughs, bourbon, beer, and hot tubs ensued. we truly rolled in style on this day and felt like kings thanks to our amazing new and old friends.

day 2 - diplomat's bday:

on this day, diplomat completed 29 revolutions around the sun. phew, thank goodness. we drove up the coast and passed our opinions on a few wines in santa barbara county. surliness ensued, plus shit-talking (¿se habla mierda?). by the end, pretty much just quaffing the wine. had the best campsite on a cliff overlooking the pacific at el capitan state beach. watched the sun go down, switched from fancy wine to natty light and cooked fish tacos over an open flame. slept ouside to the sound of rolling waves. brian was ecstatic over the fact that he got to celebrate with his two best friends on the beach in cali.

Biko Garage - isla vista :

what can one say about i.v.? d numbers was very intrigued and honored to have an opportunity to be immersed in this fabulous culture. we stayed at the biko housing co-op, which, as far as we could tell, was the home of the coolest kids in town. walked to the beach and witnessed the annual Floatopia event. this is where the locals bring kiddie pools, rafts, canoes, our any other floatation device down to the beach and float and drink copious amounts of beer and booze. we watched from afar as to not interfere with our anthropological study, and remembered again, that a frisbee in flight is a beautiful thing. the show was a great time. we missed the first act as we were setting up outside, but caught a little bit of Moulth. they were incredible! three local high school kids: d numbers enthusiastically approves. jacobson knows how to rep it, and our shmate also made the drive up from l.a.. we had a blast playing for these kids. lots of dancing and jumping about and good listening. then we, being veterans apparently, closed out the wild (?) college-town party as everyone else drifted off with visions of sugar-plums and beer-bongs.

Cafe Pergolesi - santa cruz:

BEar on beAR are our new homies. possibly the sweetest guys that live in santa cruz. we just loved doing the show with them. plus, we got to see our old friend, i heart metal, who moved from santa fe to s.c. despite the curt and surly staff, we still managed to rage this little coffee shop. it was a great line-up: alex crooned lovingly. d numbers repped the 505 proper. bear on bear fucking rocked it! got to hang with amara and anna and bear on bear at the end of the night. good times.

more to come soon. we love you all, and we're reppin the 505 to the best of our abilities.
all the best,

Current mood:invincible
Category: Music
well, it finally feels like we're on tour. we've played three shows so far with a big one on deck for tonight. a little about the begining...

first off, our homie Jay is our hero! just because he is amazing, he installed a sub in our trusty ride, Vance, for us to enjoy on our trip. we sing his praises everytime a new track drops. let there be bass, hallelujah.

The Paper Heart/ Phoenix: 5/9/07:
the sheer heat of arizona was a bit much for us to handle at first and phoenix personified may not have a pulse. having our good friends azmike, bowie, lacey, julian, sarah, rudy and marty there truly made the night and helped us through. surreal david-lynchian dinner at the american legion hall, whoa, fucked up, yet amazing.

5/10/07: a night off camping on mt. lemmon outside of tucson was just the pow-wow d#s needed to remind us that tour is kind of like vacation.

5/11/07: DRY RIVER / Tucson:
after a relaxing afternoon in kelly and shawn's air-conditioned home we head over to dry river, a dilapidated and beautiful community arts and music collective festuned with anarchist zines, free clothing racks, and awesome people. we felt quite comfortable in this club-house of a venue. we played last out of 4 acts and were so pleased with the attentive crowd that had coalessed by the end of the night. enthusiasm and cd sales followed. we hopped on the 10 and crashed at az-mike's place, ripped music and headed off.

5/12/07: The Grounds - Fillmore,CA
driving across the desert had us longing fo the salty breezes of cali. we finally made it through the mass of interstates, cars, and strip malls that is l.a. and into beautiful green farmland. fruit stands. cool air. sweet smells. yes. we arrived in fillmore. we barely managed to cram ourselves into this cute coffee shop after moving all the furniture outside. we played for about five people, not including the two staffers of the grounds. strange. but andy, of the northern two, played a great set and we sold a onesie to a young expecting couple, which pretty much made it all worthwhile.

L.A. -
fucking SNAP! hanging with some serious old school peeps on the beach yesterday. shmate, bougarelli, tay: incredible. enough laughs to hurt our bellies. we took a dip in the pacific, drank tecates, and ate dinner at bruno's in santa monica. can you say, fucking QUALITY time? we couldn't be more grateful for the fact that we have these wonderful friends. today, we've just been rallying all our west coast thugs to bring them out tonight to the bootleg theater (oh you've never heard of it either?...). s'gonna be wild, wish you were here.
love,

Current mood:exhausted. thrilled.
april 30th, '07:

we are now driving back home to the 505 after four shows in denver.

our van eats hills for breakfast, and we love it.

we've been gifted hash, hotels, hugs, and heart-warming hospitality.

del is re-descovering his stoner self, and he wants to fuck the mountain.

Denver:

snap. denver knows how to party. we met many beautiful people and ate almost enough chiltepines. we're rode a fine line between really clever and really ghetto. severiously. josh wright is a saint. he took great care of us, and knows how to call on the peeps to represent.

meadowlark: our first show outside of santa fe in four years, it was a rather humbling after the epic proportions of our cd release party. we met ej, amanda, and the sputter. we hope to keep in touch with all of them.

dulcinea's 100th monkey: we raged it. boom. all of josh's homies came out en masse. plus andy sell, the veteren. FUN! shout out to bob and lisa and spicer for coming out both nights. after party ensued, complete with a delicious bottle of espolon, two thirty packs of pbr, mad shit-talking, manual vaporizing, and quesadillas. feath won a game of beer-pong. we met tom: legend. our musical selection of hot chip was vetoed for a twenty-five minute phish jam, only in colorado.

Fort Collins:

here we were treated like kings! food buy-outs, not one (1) but two (2) hotel rooms, a beautiful venue adorned with the awesome art of our generous hosts, jonny and erin wright, and the best sound yet. we even had some underage girls sneak in the back and dance on stage with us for a couple of minutes. the feeling of the show was very reminiscent of terrible tuesdays at the p-mount in which d numbers kills it for 8-10 people. we'll be back. we met cat, who is going back to alaska. del was impressed with her biceps and wanted a noogie from her but was too shy to ask for one. our new homie tom came up from denver to represent. awesome. 4am waffle house mission, cured del off all his ailments, but made us all sick.

Boulder:

vance triumphed over the gorgeous rolling hills between ft. collins and boulder. sgt. peppers, ah yes. arrived just in time for the fourth annual fairy-tulip parade. smoothies and wheatgrass to quell the pangs of waffle house hangovers. chataqua park. boom, for real. beautimous. frisbee hiking, a new sport? made it up to the ironette. filled our lungs with fresh air and headed back to town. burnt toast: probably the cutest place we'll play, ever. had the pleasure of seeing katehead! she rules! plus, she set up the whole thing last minute for us. roy and sara represented, which made us feel great. kitty, who we hadn't seen since she left santa fe the second time was there! (LAF) plus, amanda, the bartender from the meadowlark came up to see us, what a treat. we played well, and sold more merch than all the CO dates combined.

i don't think we've ever played four d numbers shows in a row, we did well and we feel ready to bring it on the west coast. hope to see you there.
love,
d#s

stay tuned....
