Last weekend we had a major event in the life of our slowly-evolving band. We actually all played together in the same room for the first time. That may sound odd. But in this day-and-age of  internet technology, we've all been able to listen to tracks via email, and get to know the songs that way.

So it was interesting to have the opportunity to perform together last Saturday at Pete's house concert. The crowd seemed to like it. I think we all only played on one song (Calcutta), or maybe it was two ( We'll call the song "Get it Right" for now). Actually , come to think of it, we all played on Kevin's song (The Devil Goes Blind) as well, but I'm not sure if that song is part of this project or one of Kevin's other bands. Kevin, if you read this, maybe you could comment on that.

I gently nagged Geoff to get me some audio of that night, but at this point have not received it. I will post it on here if it turned out.

Getting back to the idea of the internet and not playing in the same room, I have some audio for you as an example. This song is called "Mere Mortals", and this is from a practice that Kevin & I had a couple of weeks back. Pete then added drums later.

"Mere Mortals" is also a prime example of a song that would not fit into the TST set list. It's a pretty dark, slow-moving tune. But this is what excites me about this project. It's a lot of fun flexing creative muscles in a different way.

"The Tracks Of Kingston" is a compilation cd (consisting of songs by Kingston musicians)which is being sold to raise funds for the JOE CHITHALEN MUSICAL INSTRUMENT LENDING LIBRARY. This is a great cause. Anyone can go in, sign out an instrument, and learn to play music, for free.

With our schools music programs being gutted, an organization like Joe's Mill has become even more important.

"THE TRACKS OF KINGSTON" is now available for only $15.00 at many downtown locations:

Kingston Tourism booth
Kingston brewing company
RCHA Club
Wooden Heads Pizza
Brandees
The Mansion
Rankin Sound
Joe's M.I.L.L.

This disc would make an excellent Christmas gift. Get some great songs from Kingston artists(Emily Fennell, Tom Savage, Mojo Shooter, Spencer Evans, etc.), donate to a worthy cause, and invest in Kingston's future musicians.

Or you might say “birth of a band” in this instance. I’m currently working on a project with Kevin Bowers ( Me Man Jack) on some new original material, that doesn’t quite fit in with what TST does. Kevin has brought some songs to the table as well.  The plan is to make an album eventually.

The seed was planted from jamming together at The Mansion when Kevin was hosting the local musicians night there a couple of months ago. Plus, the close proximity of our houses has helped things get rolling.

I plan to do a series of blog posts that have to do with this project, in order to let folks in on our creative process, and allow you to witness the evolution of these songs, from beginning to final product.

This track is called “Calcutta”. It’s just Kevin & I on this one. We’ll have Pete Bowers, Geoff Chown, and perhaps others joining in on future tracks.

I am the proud owner of a 1966 Harmony Silhouette. A guitar that I have actually had in my possession since I was 16 or 17. A very long time ago. It was given to me by a friend because he knew I played guitar. At that time it was in pieces. The body, the neck, and the pick guard with the electronics attached to it.

I had no idea what the make was. I had no idea how to fix it. But I really liked the shape of it and thought it would be cool to do something with it someday. So, I put it in my bedroom closet and promptly forgot about it.

That is until, my Mother decided to clean out her house this past spring, and found the disassembled instrument. She brought it over to my place, saying ' I didn't think I should throw this out' or something to that affect. Needless to say, I was pleased that she had kept it all of these years.

Now that it was no longer the '80s, and we have the internet, there was a great opportunity to find out what this guitar was. I should explain, that when i got the guitar, it had 3 coats of white paint ( and maybe a coat of yellow ), and there were no identifying markings, other than a stamp on the inside of the pick guard saying 'manufactured 1966' or something.

It did take me a few hours research to figure out which guitar it was. Not too long to narrow it down to Harmony, but they had quite a few guitars that were very similar. I thought it was a Bobkat at first, but they had a different tailpiece.

Now that I knew what it was I just had to figure out how to go about fixing it up.

The Parts :

Quite a bit of time and research went into finding the right bridge and tailpiece/tremar bar. I figured out the tremar bar was made by Hagstrom. I found the tremar tailpiece at the Hagstrom spare parts site . But they didn't have the bridge. I found that on Ebay ( actually from a music shop specializing in violins ). I'm convinced it was the only one for sale in the entire world.

Gord from the Kingston Guitar Shop had the tuners. Although he had to modify them slightly to make them fit. He also had to fit in some wooden pieces to hold the posts for the bridge to go on.

The Paint Job :

That's all thanks to my friend Richard Piche. He stripped it, sanded it, and added an nice authentic redburst finish to it. Considering he had never done this kind of paint job, I think he did an awesome job with it.This is a pic of the guitar below :

He was using this picture that I found on the internet as a guide :

Pretty cool if you ask me!

Cheers,
Tom

Hey Folks,

It has been in the works awhile now, but after some sound and artwork tweaking, and the pressing of course, I am pleased to announce the release of my new acoustic live album.

Tom Savage - Live @ Acoustic Grill, is an excellent representation of the acoustic side of my music, in an intimate setting. it's a razor-sharp, down-in-the-dirt, shot-to-the-gut, kind of performance that myself, along with Geoff Chown (Bass), and Kevin Davidson (violin, backing vocals ), managed to pull off on this particular evening in Picton, Ontario, and I am extremely excited to be able to share it with you.

What is particularly unique about this live album, is that it contains mostly new material that has never been recorded, or released before. The 3 tracks on this album that were previously recorded are "The One", "The County Line", and " No-Win Situation". Those 3 songs are from TST's "The County Line" album, so these acoustic versions are quite different.

A big thanks to Steve Purtelle for putting this project together for myself, and for the other artists he has worked with ( Brock Zeman's and Tom Wilson's discs are available now as well). It is a great opportunity for everyone involved. For myself, it allowed to get some of my songs, that otherwise would have had to wait to be released, to be heard by the general public(at places other than my shows). It would never have crossed my mind to release my third album in four years if it weren't for Steve coming to me with this idea.

For those of you in the Kingston area, who would like to come to the Kingston Release Party, it is at The Mansion on Friday Sept. 11th. Check out the Facebook event here . Invite Your Friends !!

We're still setting up the album for internet sales, so I'll keep you posted on that, but you can email me if you're interested in mail-order.

Also, stay tuned to the ReverbNation site, for exclusive tracks that didn't end up on the disc, but will be available for free download in the near future.

Cheers,
Tom Savage
