Humanoid - At Bar 8-12-07 Review by John Pegoraro (StonerRock.com) Safety Meeting Release date: February 2008
Apart from Cable, there hasn't been much to recommend from Connecticut until lately. Crooked Hook's made some inroads with their classic Blue Cheer inspired rock and now New Haven's Humanoid (not to be confused with the currently defunct The Humanoids from Boston) is hoping to garner attention with their live At Bar 8-12-07 album.
For those familiar with Noxagt and bands that prefer a heapin' plenty of discordant, AmRep type noise with their rock, then this group's for you. The all-instrumental, six-song release is unsettling and anxious, never settling into a groove long enough for you to be comfortable and always lurching forward with a sea-sick like rhythm. "Riff" and "Birdghost" are the two most geared towards my sensibilities (i.e.: they're the easiest to digest) but those with more of an appreciation for the unconventional will gravitate towards the other four tracks. Ultimately, Humanoid shows that there's more to Connecticut than just the interminably long Route 84.
