The Echo Falls just booked our 2nd and 3rd gigs. After playing acoustically in our living rooms for 2 years, we played one gig opening for Brett Dennen in San Francisco on 6.6.06 at the Hotel Utah. It was a good night, but we were running late so Dave our drummer lent Brett his drum set and wound up staying until 1am and then got his car towed. I don't know if that's why we didn't play another show until now, but who knows.
We recorded our album ourselves, which just takes a while, plus Sean (our mixer) works full-time so he mixed the album on weekends (and did a great job, as you'll hear) and that took a while.
I saw Jason Munn's artwork in a book and loved it and called him and he offered to do our CD cover, but he was booked for a couple months, but we were mastering the record anyway and he finished before we did.
Anyway, we've booked two gigs. June 22 opening for Gary Jules (what a great songwriter) at the Cafe Du Nord and another show in Berkeley at Starry Plough on June 11. I've been sitting down for the past 5 years but tonight I attached a strap and played my Taylor and it felt great. So maybe I'll stand up for these shows, the excitement is growing I know. Jason's offered to do a limited print run (about 100) of his marvelous artwork from the CD with signed and numbered silk screen prints. For now, the only place to get the CD and prints is at these shows, but eventually you'll be able to get it on iTunes, but then you don't get Jason's beautiful artwork, which I'll hold in my hand tomorrow, the universe be praised. Thing is, this album has been a long time coming and we hope you'll be able to hear it. Please listen to the mp3s at theechofalls.com, they sound a lot better than these streaming versions. Thanks, AM

A few months ago I was perusing a book of Band Logos, and I kept stumbling upon really striking elegant designs for Wilco, Death Cab for Cutie, and Rogue Wave. I started to realize they were all done by the same guy - Jason Munn, aka The Small Stakes. I googled Jason, called him and he answered the phone. I sent him a copy of some rough mixes for our album, and was thrilled that he agreed to design the cover for The Echo Falls debut.
Jason listened to the songs and words and somehow managed to capture the main themes of the album and translate them into a really elegant, mysterious design. Jason made use of the front, back, inside and the CD itself to great effect, creating a unified design that is iconic - a piece of art. I think Jason's design will inspire some curiosity about the music within. I can't wait to get the CDs back from the manufacturer and hold them in my hands.

We spent three years playing these songs in our respective living rooms, acoustically, no mics, no electricity, just enjoying playing music together. The arrangements evolved, became more focused. And our sound found us.
We realized it was time to capture the results on tape, and about 1 year ago, we started recording ourselves in Dave's rehearsal space in Oakland.
Listening to rough mixes of acoustic guitar, voice, double bass and drums, occasionally a song called for something extra - a piano, vibes, congas, a vocal harmony. But for the most part, it's the sound of the three of us playing together in our homes.
We found a mixer, Sean Beresford, who has done a spectacular job.
Anyway, the album will be done in early 2009, and we love it, and we hope you will too, whoever you may be. In the meantime, I'm posting the first five songs from the record. Thanks for listening.
