In response to City Beat being lame:

In reading the 24OB issue of City Beat where every  band playing at the street fair  was shredded by City Beat it really got me thinking about the purpose of the paper and how unsupportive San Diego is to their music scene. (First, I have to be honest… I did not read the article in depth because it honestly wasn't worth the read.) So, with that being said, the reason I am writing this is because I think this topic does deserve some attention. Ocean Beach is probably the most supportive and musically inspired neighborhood in all of San Diego. This is a town where people and bands are loyal to venues, bands and music in general. This is the town where people go to venues without knowing who is playing just cause they want to hear music, this is the town where bands practice 24/7 in garages and bedrooms just to play music, this is the town where bands still play house parties and people are not "to cool" to have a good time and this is the town where it is easy to find home studios, gigs for new bands and ears that will listen. Your article did nothing but rip a part Ocean Beach's culture and musical influences and that is basically ripping apart the only part of San Diego that actually gives a shit about music. I mean honestly, you are making fun of old guys for rocking out when the closest you have come to the stage is playing Guitar Hero at your local hipster joint. I hope to god when I am 40 I have the balls to still perform even if it is at Dream Street… at least they are still putting on shows and providing a stage for talent.

Don't you get tired of writing about "the next big band" that figured out how to play an arpeggio with an analogue synthesizer over an 80s rock beat?

(Fuck I love indie rock ,I love mixing the new with the old, but don't you think you should look into the next sound instead of what is being copied since the strokes blew up, came into town and pissed in every ones ears)

Don't you get tired of comparing any band that has any sort of reggae influence to Sublime?

(This is the same old fucking copout and shows that zero knowledge or creativity is expected of your writers. You act if Sublime invented reggae and for some reason you own their legacy)

Don't you get tired of doing imaginary interviews with rock stars because you can't land a real one?

CityBeat…. What city do you report the beat of? It seems to me you are more intent on showing that San Diego has a lame music scene. So do it. Keep reporting how lame bands are, keep reporting that the only town that truly to the core supports music is lame. There are so many bands that the media in this town turns its back on it is disgusting. San Diego is not LA, our music scene is nothing like LA, our venues are nothing like LA and for fuck sake the people here are nothing like the people in LA. Again, no offense to "the hipster" scene at all, but that is the only scene that is reported on and it makes up a very small portion of the music that is created here. I love all types of music and can even find value in pop music that is produced. The same reason why quality of music that is accepted by the masses is lesser then the days of Motown is the same reason your articles are so lame…. Its education and a lack of expectation.  I mean do you even know about the Hip Hop Scene in San Diego? Do you know where to look for it? Do you know where to find a good band outside of the Casbah? Would you know where to find an up-n-coming producer in San Diego?

I understand writing with humor and I understand sarcasm and I also understand laziness. Would it be easy for me to go to the OB street fair and make fun of everything? Yes, but I'm a cynical prick. It would be a lot harder to dig and find something that is really interesting or ground breaking to write on. I am standing up for my community… I am standing up for the bands in that article…. I am standing up for the same people that you knock because you hide behind a magazine and are too weak to pick up an instrument and take a stand for something. You are the same people that are going to look at this and bash the grammar instead of addressing the content.

Lastly…. I love Ocean Beach I think it is a island of real people surrounded by an Ocean of imitators. I'm sick of hearing OB is dirty and scary… well you know what….. OB is dirty and scary…..and we like it like that!

Gadfly is officially well under way recording their second full length album, "Problem to Solve all your Problems" at Capricorn studios downtown San Diego. Although the recording process got off to a rocky start on Saturday cause some prick stole DK's (aka Beaver aka Wood Chuck) snare drum from outside the studio, the last 2 days have been a shitload of fun and we got a lot done. We finished tracking all of the bass drums and guitars today and tomorrow we will tackle the vocals for all 13 songs. The album has more of a rock feel, but we still hit on some dub and of course..Rock Steady Rock. We are really stoaked to be making this album and know you guys will love it. We will keep you all up to date as far as a release date goes and im sure we will throw out some tracks before it is released to give you a taste...

First of all its so damn windy right now im expecting a fucking tree to come crashing through my window....

Ok, we have been talking about the Sin Fronteras Project for a little time now and the album is finally being pressed this week in Argentina. The first single from the album is called La Llorona and has been getting a ton of airplay in Argentina over the last few months. Why are we doing this record in Argentina? well, That is where the project started.... Let me offer a brief explanation on what this is all about:

Golem System from Barcelona, Aztecas Tupro from Argentina and Gadfly from San Diego all met in the studio 1 year ago to collaborate on some music. The 3 bands recorded some songs together and were very surprised at how good they came out. Let me say that these songs are unlike any style the 3 bands were used to playing. Long story short..... we compiled those 3 songs and 3 songs from each band to come up with a 12 song record. The album will be available in the US shortly and the first run of CD's will be special edition because the album is most likley going to be put out by a major label in the second pressing so some of the songs might change due to legal issues. The album is getting massive media attention in Argentina and we hope to spread the excitment of the album here to the US. Please check out out the artwork below and go show some love to the other bands that are part of this album...
Golem System and Aztecas tupro can be found in our top friends...

Much love and wish us luck in this very exciting time for us..

Damn sometimes the right thing to do is just go to fucking bed!

Pod the Globe and SD Music Scout came to our Last 710 Club show and filmed us for an upcoming podcast. We posted 3 of the songs from the 17 minute program... check them out and let us know what you think. For the real thing, come down to 710 this Saturday for GADFLY, the DEVASTATORS and HIGH TIDE. Gadfly plays at 10:30 and the set will be about an hour. Pod the Globe also came out to our last Winstons show and filmed for an upcoming release featuring Gadfly and the Wylde Bunch. Stay tuned for Details on that.

We will be in LA at the Key Club on Friday night with Mike Pinto and right above our heads will be the English Beat...Literally! We were honored to open up for the English Beat a few weeks back at the Belly Up...and now we get to play in the basement below him at the Key Club.

Want to give a shout out to Touch of CAS for lending the hip hop vocal to the "Don't Have any Words" remix that we recently put up. Look out for "the Art of Rhyming", the debut from Touch of CAS dropping real soon. Good lookin brother Craig!

We are stoaked to be writing for our new album and have a handfull of songs written or in the works. Hit me low, Fishbowl, Give Me Some More, Ro Sham bo, Scale, Hope, End of my Rope and Threw it all away are some of the tracks that are going to be on this record and we have some other songs 1 or 2 more rehearsals away from being done. Speaking for myself I know the songs I have been writing are a lot more personal then what I am used to writing. I'm trying to be as honest as possible... but don't worry all the names have been changed to protect the innocemt...maybe. Smells like a darrel in here.

Stay in touch... Come to the shows... Buy us Jameson...
I havent gone to the grocery store in 2 years...maybe 3... I'm really hungry. Does anyone want to bring me some food?

We have put our album "Forgot to stand" up for digital download on our page. We are also putting up some unreleased songs and all of them are 99 cents.

As you know we are working on the Gadfly Remix album and we have put a sample song up for sale. "Don't have any words" is a remix of our song "Shy Guy" featuring our good friend Touch of CAS. We are pretty stoaked with how it turned out and think you will be into it. Check out Touch of CAS for some sick Hip Hop

Pino and I began laying down some bass tracks tonight for our upcoming release and got through about 6 songs. Its our first steps on the long road to the most epic album in the history of music. Seriously... We are stoaked to be recording again and are really looking forward to working on this release. Our last record, Forgot to stand, is a pretty raw record which was recorded live. This time around we are looking to explore the studio space a little more and really get into the production.

We are documenting this whole process and will be releasing podcasts of the different steps along the way. Keep your eye out.

Much love,

Tommy Dubs
