Would you believe I designed and built my own jazz club? And would you
believe that you can visit it in the privacy of your own home? Well,
it's true! We open on Valentine's Day.
It's called Meatspace Lounge and it's in a world called Second Life.
You haven't heard of Second Life? IBM CEO Sam Palmisano has called it
the "next phase of the Internet's evolution," and he's quite right.
In their own words, "Second Life is a 3D online digital world
imagined, created and owned by its residents." No, it's not a game,
although it bears some similarity to The Sims and World of Warcraft.
More accurately, though, it's been said that "SL is not a game. It's
an interface." A free interface, I might add.
Aside from the chat and instant message capabilites, a
beyond-fully-customizable avatar, and the ability to create any
object you can imagine -- a jazz club, for example -- you can also
listen to live music!
Honestly, it's impossible to describe. You have to experience it for
yourself. So, this weekend, I encourage you to go to
http://www.secondlife.com/?u=20d937379a1146f995d08ffd0bef8bf1 to
download the free viewer and take a look around. There's a bit of a
learning curve due to all the things you can do in-world.
Once you get the hang of it, you can search for Meatspace Lounge (or
just teleport to 96, 23, 21 ...oh, I didn't mention you can teleport?
And FLY?) or look me up under my SL name Kyle Beltran or my business
partner Quota Soon, and come over on Wednesday, February 14th at 7pm
SL time.
Oh, and would you believe I'll be playing the piano? I've been
retraining myself on the instrument for almost a year, and I've been
creating a lot of noises that sound suspiciously like music! You'll
get a sneak preview of some of the newest compositions for my next
CD, which I'll be performing at Meatspace for our Grand Opening.
See you there...or here...um...well, see you in the metaverse!
Yours,
Kyle
