Fantastic Mr Fox started producing 7 years ago at the age of 14, with his music first being picked up in 2006 by Radio 1’s Steve Lamacq.

Regular support of his early leftfield hip-hop productions from Mr Lamacq helped lead to remix work for Maps, Shitdisco, Just Jack, Soweto Kinch, Polar Bear, Fulborn Teversham, Kid Harpoon, Julia Biel, Riz MC, The Carps, Make Model, The Cansecos, Marissa Nadler, Son Lux and most recently Untold & LV.

Following his remix of Untold’s “Yukon” Fantastic Mr Fox decided to up the tempo of his productions and his first two efforts, produced along side Manchester DJ, promoter and producer Rich Reason, were signed to Untold’s Hemlock label.

A second collaborative release with Rich Reason was put out on Black Acre, whilst FMF’s remix of LV-“Don’t Judge” will soon be available on 2nd Drop Records.

Fantastic Mr Fox’s first solo release is also now finished, with the “Sketches EP” due to be released on Black Acre towards the end of 2009.

CLUBROOT - Clubroot
LO DUBS
CD // £12.99
DUBSTEP / GRIME / FUNKY
Released: Jun 2009
Catalogue Number: LODUBSD09002CD

Fans of Burial, take note.

Lo Dubs come correct this week with a hugely enticing and anticipated album from Clubroot. Clubroot has apparently been producing for the best part of the decade, initially constructing tech step D'n'B indebted to the likes of Nico, Ed Rush and Optical but shifting his palette to the dominant dubstep style in recent years.

To sum up Clubroots sound as succinctly as possible, it's like the perfect hybrid of Burial and Kryptic Minds, taking the mood driven atmospheres and quicksilver slink of Burial and alloying it to dynamic basslines and intricately produced rhythm structures.

This combination is explored through ten tracks united by a singular rhythmic vision in thrall to classic darkside dance music and operating under the cover of severely occluded atmospheres. With Mary-Anne Hobbs fully on his case and forums across the interweb quickly catching onto his sound it's not going to be long before he's soundtracking every channel four ident so make sure to get in early! Essential recommendation for fans of Burial!!!

AKIRA KITESHI - Pinball / Noglitch
Black Acre
12″ // £5.99
DUBSTEP / GRIME / FUNKY
Released: Feb 2009
Catalogue Number: ACRE008

Debut release from Scottish Akira Kiteshi with a powerful bass transmission for Black Acre records.

It may be a little lazy to descreibe title track ‘Pinball’ as very similar to efforts by his """fellow countrymen....lol""" Goth Trad and Quarta 330, but listen to it yourself and you’ll see the distinct hallmarks of both producers wedged into this heavyweight track, with the detailed edits and gleaming structures of Goth Trad’s finest work merged with the clipped angles of Quarta 330’s 8-Bit functions, which is definitely no bad thing and should pick up the fella a good deal of fans. ‘Noglitch Part 1&2′ on the reverse opt for a wilder and more experimental approach, fitting the rhtyhm out with breakstep ticks and electronica twists for a rougher ride to the dancehall.

Now it’s 2009 and after being swooped on by the infamous Black Acre orphanage for electronically gifted, A.K. have seen a meteoric assent through the Dubstep scene via a pincer movement performed by both Rob Booth and DJ N-Type. The catalyst; a little tune called Pinball capturing the best elements of modern electronic music and fusing them into an 8bit punch up between Rusko & DJ Shadow.

To come….. after wowing the kids with their non-genre specific brand of Glitch funk A.K. will be featuring as primary remixer on the pending release of Unique 3’s classic “Shades of Grey” Via Mutate Records (April).

While keeping true to their roots, wonky outfitter Dealmaker will be dropping the vertigo inducing Donk! EP.

Lastly and on the not too distant Horizon, Black Acre will be presenting A.K.s debut album to the world, as yet untitled early reports liken the listening experience to an overly warm bubble bath with Rick James & Barbarella while battling biz markie on Street fighter 2 turbo on the SNES.

Watch for the promo only “Ulysses” Forthcoming on Black Acre, and the killer A.K. remix of N-Types ridiculous “Darkmatter”

Taal Mala Bio:

Often described as un-categorizable, Taal Mala’s music is inspired by new ideas and classic standards, and takes influence from a diverse selection of both new and classic sounds. Genre-defying acts of synth genius and production lustre form a solid foundation for Taal Mala’s destruction of any soundboy who comes to test it. Dubstep, Grime, Jungle, Acid, Hardcore and Reggae are all partially responsible for the fusion that is created. As a member of the SUB-OSC and Lighta! soundsystems, Taal Mala has buried an excess of tin pan soundboys alongside The Bug, Kode9, Loefah, Venetian Snares, Rusko, Benga, Skream, Hatcha, Youngsta, Martyn…etc. Keep your eyes open for lighta! and SUB-OSC releases in Summer 2009.

Max Ulis Bio:

I’ve been djing for about 10 years and producing for around four. I got into Dubstep through my love of Jungle, Techno, and Grime (electronic music in general). I did a Grime weekly for about a year in Vancouver with a couple friends in 2004-’05. At around the same time grime was kinda falling off for me i spent a little time in London and picked up a couple 12’s like Coki “Officer”, Vex’d “Lion” and got really excited about the sound. I started blending these darker elements into my set and about half the people loved and the other half hated it. this went on for some time until michael red asked me to become part of lighta! and things started getting more interesting. We were playing parties that had dancehall, jungle, dub, glitch, and dubstep all on the same night and people were coming, and then alot of people were coming, and then all of a sudden we had a community. This community is what inspires me to make music.

I would like to add that i have a beard and I like waffles and long walks by the ocean, and hate bios.

Self Evident Bio:

Self Evident makes party music that fuses influences from all over the map. Most notably grime, dancehall, metal, club hip-hop and dubstep. He has collaborated with Warrior Queen on 2 soon to be released tunes. His tracks have been played by The Bug, Edu K, DJ Hatcha, Headhunter and Kid Kameleon. He has played alongside Caspa, The Bug, Excision and Maga Bo.

Daega Soundsystem Bio:

DAEGA Sound System Brothers Ben and Joshua Searles are the DAEGA Sound System. Djing and promoting for over 10 years they have turned their attention to the studio to develop their production project DAEGA Sound System. Also known as DJs Sela and Deep Six, they are reppin’ for Vancouver Lighta! crew and have just signed to Chefal’s SubFreq Label, Formant Recordings, and DPR Recordings. Their sets focus on the deep rollers and their music is described as “deep and heavy, intricate and spacious”. Live PA and DJ duo they are pushing the deeper end of dubstep, techno, drum and bass and other forms of electronic music.

Phowa Bio:

Phōwa’s work is a fusion of numerous sources of inspiration and sonic pallets yet still maintaining a uniquely enigmatic and personal sensibility. His sense of lo-fi textures and dynamics combine to create deeply immersive atmospheres blended with hypnotic melodic progressions grounded in heavy beats and thick basslines.

As a part of SUB-OSC, phōwa has been pushing bass heavy sounds up and down the west coast, appearing along side the likes of Skream, Loefah, Distance and Bassnectar. He has done remixes for Cheb I Sabbah and the Future Sound of London and has licenced music to films such as ‘Scared Sacred’ and ‘The Corporation.

How do you describe hexadecibel aka HxdB? Well, that’s easy. To describe this man’s music on the other hand, is not so easy…

The former, is a 30 year music lover, and recent re-initiate back in to the game of music creation, who along with fellow Canadian virtuoso, DJ Cure, manage Aufect Recordings (http://myspace.com/aufect) & Pressing Issues Recordings (http://pressing-issues.com). The latter is a mish-mash of superlatives and buzz words to attempt to describe his well-crafted sounds. Words like soulful, epic, haunting, rolling, deep & heavy are common on the lips of his growing following. His productions are diverse, ranging many of the different ends of the dubstep spectrum, and you can really hear that he strives to create his unique soundscapes in what whatever scope is given.

2009 looks to be a very promising year for him, with forthcoming releases on Echodub, Mindset, Formant, Surface Tension, Trillbass, Cymbstep, Substruk, DDR, Filthy Digital & DubKraft, and with many other record labels salivating over his music, it almost seems a certainty we’ll see many, many more on the horizon. Also, look for various remixes, bootlegs and other exclusives posted by him on the music forum (http://dubstepforum.com) where you can currently find a number of his tracks offered for free, sitting happily at the top of the forum.

You can also download the hexadecibel showcase mix which is comprised solely of his original material.

DJ Cure Bio:

Aufect Recordings boss, DJ Cure aka Patrik Walters is no stranger to Canada’s underground electronic music scene.

He is now running two record labels (Aufect & Pressing Issues) and DJing all across North America.

Cure started collecting records at the age of 16. It started out as an addiction to Hip Hop, then Techno, Jungle and DNB. Originally from Toronto, He has shared the bill with industry icons such as Dieselboy, Concord Dawn, Evol Intent, John Rolodex, Kenny Ken, Ed Rush, Martyn, Capital J, Joe Nice and Headhunter to name a few.

In 2004 he landed a gig on MTV’s “Don’t try this at home” tour, opening up for Steve-o and the rest of the infamous “Jackass” crew.

Around that same time he was starting to really take interest in Grime and early Dubstep, after a friend passed along a Kode 9 mixtape. When 2006 rolled around Cure had become intrigued by the future sounds of Dubstep. He joined Pressing Issues Recordings that summer as an A&R, and has just recently taken full control of the label (currently working on the 3rd vinyl release) .

In August of 2007, after feeling like he had reached his limits in Ontario, he decided to transplant to Vancouver with the intent of starting a label of his own. In early 2008 Aufect Recordings was born and Cure joins the Vancouver local Bass squad, Lighta! Crew. Many things to come from DJ Cure in 2009, stay tuned!

This is a 70 minute mix of many of my favourite old Jungle records I listened to growing up in London.

You'll have to excuse the quality in parts as some of my old records are a little scratchy.

I've approached this one differently from the first mix I did for
'ELECTRONIC EXPLORATIONS,' with that one I was layering lots of elements to make something new.

This time I've pretty much left the tracks to speak for themselves, as when I was listening to these the first time around there was only so much you could do with each mix.

And many tracks like the Omni Trio and Photek stuff are structured so well there's nothing I would want to change anyway.

F - The Untitled Dub / Phantom
7EVEN
12″ // £5.49
DUBSTEP / GRIME
Released: Jan 2009
Catalogue Number: 7EVEN06

F kicks off the year for bass musics with a hefty thump of techno sculpted dubstep pressure for 7even records in shocking style. This plate has been giving us itchy feet for a time now, with our promo copies practically worn through due to the play-it-again! factor on both sides.

‘The Untitled Dub’ is a club wrecking masterpiece, marrying speaker puncturing dub stabs to a bulbous bass swoop and febrile percussive syncopations for a rhythm to get completely lost in. Imagine Throsten Profrock’s Erosion series making GM babies with Martyn and you’re almost there.

We really can’t get enough of ‘Phantom’ on the flipside either, taking a slightly more subdued approach the focus here is on the pitching and deeply swung percussion, incorporating intricate timbres of sub-continental rollidge with heavier kick/snare kinks and a swooning dub tech atmosphere, allowing your head to roll at quarter time while your limbs move to whichever rhythm you fancy picking up on.

This one reminds us of old style Pole dragged up to speed for 2009. With Funky twocking a lot of attention from the dubstep scene (and rightly so) for it’s return to percussive priorities, we urge you to check out the rhythms on this badboy to redress the balance! Wicked ‘n Bad!

F - Phase One / Icon
7EVEN
12″ // £5.49
DUBSTEP / GRIME
Released: Sep 2008
Catalogue Number: 7EVEN04

Pristine dubstepXtechno depth from France’s finest exponents of the good stuff, 7even recordings.

In the space of only four releases the label has fast become something to get excited about with a deep and driving dubstep aesthetic closely aligned to the styles of Peverelist, Scuba or a more technofied Martyn.

This is the first release from F and it’s a certified winner, shaping two tracks of chords driven 140bpm dub techno with skipping garage movements and full sunken dubstep subs that’s an absolute pleasure to bust a flex to. If you’re into this stuff, do yourself a favour and get one nabbed. Killer.

The night is a fundraiser for the Malawi Education Project, a Bristol
based charity which promotes literacy and learning in one of the worlds
poorest countries. The events began life as a method of gathering much
needed funds for the project but as they have grown, they evolved to
become a vessel for raising awareness to both the plight of the people
of Malawi and the great work that the charity do there.

The show of support by underground electronic music artists has been
overwhelming and all the acts that have agreed to play at this, and
past fundraisers, are waivering their fee as a contribution to the
charity.

This is the blueprint for things to come. We already have a plethora of
acts queuing up to play at the next events and we are indebted to all
for showing their support and making the work at the charity more
possible and in doing so, raising the profile of the important work
that the charity do day to day.

The Croft. Saturday 7th February. 21.00 – 04.00
