Over the years many new Irish acts have played some of their first shows at the IMRO showcase nights.  Recent acts to appear on the tour include Declan O’Rourke (V2), The Marshals (Faction Records / Universal), La Rocca (Chrysalis Music), The Flaws (Universal), Roesy (N4 Records), 8 Ball (Lakota Records), Oppenheimer (Bar/None US), Leya (Rubyworks), Mainline (Loog Records UK) and The Immediate (Fantastic Plastic Records UK) to name a few.

The 2008 Tour receives nationwide support from RTÉ 2FM through the Dave Fanning, Dan Hegarty, Cormac Battle & Jenny Huston radio shows, as well as additional countrywide support from The Star Newspaper.

Hi all,
We are pleased to announce we've agreed a licensing deal with NOMA music (USA) to promote our music for tv and film in the U.S and Canada. Hopefully this will open lots of doors for the band in the coming year.

New Years greetings to all in cyberland.
We are all very much looking forward to '07 in Pier Nineteen land. We are currently working on a bunch of new songs in our spanking new rehearsal space in Dublin, which we hope to play live in the next couple of months.
We are at the early stage of putting together a tour for March/April. We are hoping to cover as much of Ireland as we can. More details to come.

July 14th Dublin
Jesus, why do we leave things to the last minute! Our second full band rehearsal in about 9 months, in Dublin the night before the first gig of the tour. We race through the set stopping to sort out parts we are not sure of and trying to get things as tight as possible. Liam Caffrey (Brians brother) is joining us on bass for the tour. Good job he is an amazing all round musician, and he fits in perfect. We pack up and hit the road at about 3 AM, for Galway. Who said this rock n' roll lifestyle is so easy? We stop in Athlone Service Station for some coffee at 4:30 AM in the morning. It's actually surprising how many people are around that hour of the morning. It's one of those 'super service stations', which have McDonalds etc. hanging off it. For a minute you think you could be somewhere in America. Coffee may seem like a strange concept at that hour, but when you want to keep focused on the road it gives you a welcome kick.

July 15th Campbells Tavern, Co. Galway
This is a gig we are really looking forward to. It is probably, the nicest venue in Ireland. Perfect for playing music in. The gig isn't advertised that well, because everyone is really busy with last minute preparations for album release - organising duplication, artwork etc. Orlagh De Bhaldraithe plays a really nice set to open the night. She's a really great guitar player as well. There is quite a small crowd and we are quite rusty, as you would expect from a band, which haven't played a gig in 11 months. However it felt great to be playing in front of an audience again however small it was.

July 22nd Bound For Boston, Derry
Bit of a strange gig this one. Myself, Colm and Keith drive to Derry via Sligo from Galway. The Caffrey boys drove from Dublin and we met them at the venue. It's a very strange venue with a stage equally as strange. I've noted a distinct improvement in our playing since the last gig, which is important to build up the confidence of the band. After the gig Liam and Brian head back to Donegal to stay with their sister. Colm, Keith and Myself head to Eniscrone Co. Sligo (my folks second home). On the way down I start dreaming of a nice home cooked breakfast the next morning.

July 27th Sugar Club, Dublin
This is my first time in The Sugar Club, and it really doesn't disappoint. There is a great view of the stage from every part of the venue. It has a real cinema feel to it. It's the first gig where the album is actually on sale so there is a great sense of expectancy within the band. Lord Of The Black Mountain opens the show. Brian is a good friend of their drummer Pete and they draw a great crowd. The gig goes really well for us. We also sold a good few albums, which is nice. Brian and Liam also find out that they are uncles for the first time, so excitement all round in the Caffrey camp.

Aug 11th Tower Records, Dublin
Liam couldn't do this one so we pulled a last minute replacement from recently returned world traveller Michael Coen. Michael is a former Pier Nineteen bass player, and a bloody good one at that. It's a little strange playing a gig in a shop but it's what the kids do these days.

Aug 12th Boat Club, Limerick
This is a great little place. We got a really good crowd as well. They really looked after us. Definitely a place we would like to play again. Liam was back in playing bass. We all thought it was our best performance of the tour so far. There is nothing like a few gigs in a row. We stayed in Limerick for the night where Brian befriended the neighbour's dog. Despite Brian's protests we leave for Dublin the next afternoon and leave Brian's new friend behind in Limerick.

Aug 13th Whelans, Dublin
This was a nice little 40-minute set we did before Fracas. Fracas are a band of really talented instrument swapping musicians. There was great energy in their show. Roscommon's answer to the Arcade Fire maybe!

Aug 13th Spirit Store, Dundalk
Heard so much about this venue and was really looking forward to seeing it. It is located on the harbour, a bit out of town. Sanzkrit played a nice set before it. They were really excellent. They have a song called 'Futila' on an E.P. that they released earlier in the year and it really is one of the outstanding tracks I have heard from an Irish band. We enjoyed playing our set, as the sound was absolutely perfect. I can see why it's such a popular venue on the Irish circuit.

Aug 20th Roisin Dubh, Galway
It was the first time some of the lads were in the Roisin Dubh since it was renovated. Definitely the changes make some getting used to. I think it's more of a 'Rock' venue now. Having said that I haven't been at an intimate gig since it was renovated. One of the last gigs I saw in the old Roisin Dubh was Bonnie Prince Billy & Harum Scarum, which was easily one of the best gigs I've ever been to, so there is a lot of sentimental baggage to shake off. There was a lot of family and friends at this gig and I think everyone was delighted to see all the work that was put into the album by the lads has paid off.

So tell us about the album to be released shortly

We're really excited about it's release. It's been a long time coming. We're playing for about 3 years together. We have recorded some stuff in the past...some of them feature on the album...and some of it is oven-fresh. We've wanted to make this for so long...just various things got in the way. So last summer we made a conscious effort to start recording. So nearly a year later, here we are!!

Describe the album..

When we started recording, we had no money...like...nothing. We're still in the same situation right now! So if it was going to be done, we were going to have to do it all by ourselves. This is something that we'd like people to bear in mind when they listen to it. Apart from a day in the studio recording drums, no professionals were involved in the recording of this record. At the mixing stage, we acquired the expertise of my brother Liam to give us a hand making it sound as it does right now.

The songs are very honest I think. We wanted to get away from  over-produced pop-tastic music. We never approached recording or writing with the attitude of: "ok, well put this little bit in, cause it's kinda radio-friendly". Although listening to it now, I think the melodies are very catchy and easy on the ear.

Keith, being the main songwriter has a very honest style of song-writing..and I think the music goes hand-in-hand with that.

Most debut albums have little more than 10 tracks on it. Why ye go with 14?

This was a difficult decision to make. We had talked with our friends about this and the general advice was to keep it short...people wont listen to 14 tracks..put 10/11 of your strongest on it, and leave it at that. A lot of the songs have been around for a good while and there were only one or two that we thought weren't strong enough. Others surfaced as we gigged, and they were also good. We wanted to record everything. So when the track-listing decision had to be made, we said we'd go with all that we had at that time. I think the tunes represent where the band are right now musically.

So do ye guys know each other long?

Well Keith and Colm went to primary school together and they were members of the original  band. This is going back 4 years or more. Some members left, some members were told to leave (!), so I was asked if I'd like to join the band ...about 3 years ago. I had played in other bands when pier nineteen were starting out.

So what are the plans for the rest of the year?

Hopefully to gig as much as possible. We're very much aware of the huge task of promoting an album by ourselves. Although the Internet is a godsend in terms of getting music out to the rest of the world, you still have to get out there and let people experience the real-life show. There are lots of great venues around the country with so many cool people that will always take the time out to advise on certain industry things.  So were gonna try and hit the four corners of Ireland in August and September.

Then what?

I guess we'll see how the public reacts to us. Probably do some more gigging coming up to Christmas...maybe start some more recording in early 2007.

Where do ye hope to be this time next year?

Ideally, we'd like to be playing some festivals in Ireland and in the UK. Again, we'll see how the public take to us. Maybe we are being too optimistic...maybe not...we'll gauge it as we go. Who knows what lies ahead of us. What we do know is that whatever happens, we're going to keep playing music. Whether we're the next Coldplay or we're the band who comes last in the Leitrim Battle Of The Bands competition, Pier Nineteen are gonna keep at it. because... we love it.

AT EVENSONG IS TO BE RELEASED NATIONWIDE ON JULY 28th.

Check local press and online for gig listings.
