(by MK - 12/8/09)

A frigid, drizzling rain is falling from a ghostly sky
Countless water droplets splashing upon every square inch of available surface
Gliding gently down the sloped and tattered rooftop
Pooling for a moment on the dark wooden deck only to dribble through the cracks
Gathering together to drip and drip again from the patio light strings
Droplets hang in suspension, like tiny light bulbs, from the berries that have already dried on wintered crepe myrtles
A stark stillness foreshadows the coming storm
As I sit, viewing it all,  from my picture window
Wet, cold, dim and gray
So it is on this rainy day

Singing and teaching at Thunder School last Friday was one of the great highlights of my year, and has been now for three years in a row.   What an amazingly gifted and talented group of young people who are utterly committed to the call of God on their lives.  They come from all over the country (and the world) to live, learn, and experience ministry for three solid months.  They are musicians, artists, writers, dancers and missionaries who are finding out what it means to lay down their own lives for the lives of others.

What has made being asked to share my ministry and teaching with the Thunder School students each year so great is that what they are learning about, and just beginning to experience, are the very things that I have learned and experienced over my 15 years of music ministry.  And with “experience being the great teacher”, mine has given me the ability to share with them from what I’ve learned and walked through myself – like:  mission field work, prison ministry, music ministry, music production, and tour production and coordination.

The name Thunder School comes from the reference in Mark 3:13-19 where it says:    “And He (Jesus) went up on the mountain and called to Him those He Himself wanted. And they came to Him. Then He appointed twelve, that they might be with Him and that He might send them out to preach, and to have power to heal sicknesses and to cast out demons: Simon, to whom He gave the name Peter; James the son of Zebedee and John the brother of James, to whom He gave the name Boanerges, that is, ‘Sons of Thunder’; Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Cananite; and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed Him.”

Some speculate that Jesus nicknamed James and John the Sons of Thunder because of their boldness and enthusiasm for serving Him.  Following Jesus’ example, the Thunder School invites young disciples to come and learn how to boldly serve God with the creative gifts and talents that they have been given.

Located in downtown Nashville, Thunder School is the vision of Scott MacLeod and his ministry Provision International www.provisionministries.org.   You can hear and read more about Thunder School at www.thunderschool.com.

When I begin work on a new album I always have an idea of where I want to go with it, creatively, but have found that I usually end up someplace else, which makes the journey all the more exciting.  Since the process of creating is a very organic one (as if the thing being created takes on a life of its own), I feel like every song then becomes a new discovery.  And so it has been with “Elohim.”

As my producer, Paul Buono, and I listened to the melody we’d written Paul began hearing the word Elohim; which I knew to be one of the scriptural names of God, but wasn’t sure of the actual meaning.   What I later discovered is that ”Elohim” means God, the Mighty One.  So . . . what was God trying to say through this new song?  I left the studio that day with no idea, but as the days went by I remembered “Slumdog Millionaire” – a movie that had made a profound impression on me because of its terrible and beautiful introduction of the plight of the Dalit people of India.

The lyrics came to me as I began thinking about those images I’d seen in the movie, and the thoughts of how so many people are needlessly suffering around the world simply because of religious tradition, poverty and power hungry men.  Generations of innocent people, just trying to live their lives, have been abused and outcast for no reason other than it is the “truth” that’s been forced upon them.  So, as I began writing with all these things in my mind, ”Elohim” became a prayer – for the suffering, wherever they are - and I ask that Elohim, who is no respecter of persons, would do for them what He has done for me.

Elohim
Words & Music by Mary-Kathryn and Paul Buono 6/8/09

Do you see the hunger burning in their eyes?
Or their fear of thunder falling from the skies?
Under toiling sun
They wander through the days
Searching for a home

Can you hear the darkness raining in the streets?
Or the cries of children afraid to fall asleep?
As the greed of man
Sets claim upon the dreams
Of the innocent

Hear my cry
Hear my prayer, Elohim
See their pain
See their need, Elohim
It’s for these that I pray, for these I seek
Set them free, heal their dreams, Elohim
Do what you’ve done for me

In this sea of wonder, bitter is the cup
Of needless suffering, arising from the dust
Can the ancient chains
Of the wrongfully acused
Ever be broken?

Hear my cry
Hear my prayer, Elohim
See their pain
See their need, Elohim
It’s for these that I pray, for these I seek
Set them free, heal their dreams, Elohim
Do what you’ve done for me

Over the past few months I've been working on a new project.  Artistic projects, for me anyway, always start with an idea of where I want to go but end up someplace completely different.  Which is wonderful because it makes the creative journey even more exciting.

So, this project has been similar to my previous processes; very organic, almost taking on a life of it's own.  I feel like I'm discovering as I go, really.  And so it is with this demo of one of the songs I've written - Elohim.  I say "demo" but feel I need to explain just what I mean by that.  A demo is like looking at a sketch drawing as opposed to the end painting.  All the colors aren't there, yet.  So, what you're listening to is not the final vocal or the final sounds, or the final anything.  It's just the general direction - melodically, lyrically, and with a sound or two - that gives the listener an idea of what the song will be.  I'm sharing these demos with you so that you can get a peak into the process, the journey, that I'm on.

About "Elohim" - It means God, the Mighty One, and the lyrics came to me as I began thinking about those who suffer around the world.  People who are just trying to live their lives, but are abused or treated terribly for no apparent reason except that there are those so filled with hate and bitterness around them to do the job.  The song became a prayer for those people - wherever they are - and I ask that Elohim would "do what You've done for me."  I pray this song blesses you in some special way.

Thanks so much for listening!

I've been in the studio writing and developing some new songs for my upcoming project, and wanted you to hear a rough demo of one that I've called "Nathanael's Song."

I heard this song in my head while leading worship in church a few months ago; first hearing a kind of African language and then hearing the words that just speak of how God sees us and is with us wherever we go, and in whatever we're doing.  Then, I remembered the man I'd read about in the Bible (in the book of John) named Nathanael.  He experienced an extraordinary revelation of who Jesus was simply because Jesus told him, "I saw you . . ."

John 1:45 -50 says:
Philip found Nathanael and told him, "We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote--Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph."
"Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?" Nathanael asked. "Come and see," said Philip.
When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, "Here is a true Israelite, in whom there is nothing false."
"How do you know me?" Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, "I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you."
Then Nathanael declared, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel."
Jesus said, "You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You shall see greater things than that."

Two nights ago I had an extraordinary dream that I thought would encourage you. It was short and sweet - very clear and to the point - like just about every dream I've received from the Lord.

In my dream I'm sitting in a large, white, open room reading a book or a magazine or something like that when a woman who appears to be a friend of mine walks in with a large canvas covered in a cloth. She said, "Here's my latest painting. Would you like to see it?" "Sure," I said. As she placed it on an easle in front of me, she pulled the cloth off to unveil a painting that when I looked at it caused me to immediately begin to weep. A deep cry came up out of my spirit, uncontrollably. I knew I was receiving deliverance from . . . something. I'm not even sure what! All I know is that the power of the Holy Spirit was all over that painting, and it wasn't the subject matter that struck me. In fact, the subject matter seemed irrelevant. It was more importantly what God had done through the painter to reach those who looked at her painting.

There are more details to the dream, but this is the message that the Father impressed on me concerning it - and I feel it will encourage you if you are a Christian artist - YOU are God's instrument. You are filled with His Holy Spirit and He will anoint and empower the creative work He's given you to share with the world. It's His power and your cooperation that will bring the healing and deliverance that so many need. Trust Him to use you no matter how great or how small the work. Be encouraged in your art. It's a powerful gift from the Lord!

This is my belief.  This is my heart.

(A message sent today to members of my Facebook group “A.W.E. - Artist Worship Expression” )

The great 20th century French painter, Henri Matisse, is quoted as saying, “It has bothered me all my life that I do not paint like everybody else.” Thank God he didn’t. His use of color was so unique that it ended up making him stand out from the rest. (see Matisse paintings)

Being a singer/songwriter, I’ve met so many singers/recording artists over the years who have wished desperately that they could sing like others who had found success. And haven’t we all been guilty of that at some point - of wishing we could have the talents of others?

Not too long ago I caught part of an interview with a well-known jazz singer (well-known in the jazz world, that is). She’d seen the peek of her career in the late 50’s and early 60’s, and was reminiscing about how she knew from the beginning that she didn’t have a great singing voice - that she wasn’t trained and didn’t have the abilities of other singers who’d become successful - but she did know that the voice she had made her unique. She learned to celebrate that uniqueness, focusing on her strengths, instead of her weaknesses. What seemed in the beginning to be her greatest challenge, eventually became exactly what she needed to stand out from the rest!

As Christians, we know that God has uniquely made each of us. Recognize your uniqueness as an artist and celebrate it. Focus on your strengths! The things that make you stand out from the rest. This is what God will use to get the world’s attention, and bring you to true success in serving Him.
