Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg zooms into town this weekend

The roar returns. If you’ve never been within earshot of the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, it’s difficult to imagine it. Suffice to say that it’s spectacularly loud. I live about five miles north of the 1.8-mile, 14-turn racetrack in downtown and I can hear those zoom-zooms in my living room.
Of course, it’s advantageous to get within eyeshot of the Grand Prix to fully appreciate the speed, dazzle and dexterity of the open-wheel Indy racecars.
For the first time, the St. Pete Grand Prix, held April 3-5, is the opening race on the 17-race IndyCar schedule. One of the marquee drivers in the race is Dan Wheldon, an Englishman who resides in the ‘burg.

When asked about what drew him most to his adopted hometown, he said. “I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t the weather, but the entire city is very picturesque. St. Pete has everything a big city does, but it has a small town feel to it. There is very little traffic to deal with, it’s very easy to get around and people are very nice.
“And, ultimately, this is where my racing career in America started because it’s where my first team was based, so that has always made it a special place for me. My family really loves it here.”


Danica Patrick, the high-profile woman driver on the Indycar circuit and Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition model, will also be in the field, as well as the rest of the top racers. The event will also feature other races, practice rounds and plenty of goings-on for motor-heads.
But the Honda Grand Prix is not just a matter of cars zig-zagging around the track at breathtaking velocity; it’s a full, four-day, family-style event.
There are concerts that will be held in the Honda Plaza adjacent to the Mahaffey Theater. This year’s feature act is up-and-coming country artist Michelle Murray - and this isn’t even a NASCAR event.

The show will be Sunday, August 3 from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. and

broadcasts live from Tootsie's Orchid Lounge. The radio show is hosted by 103WKDF Radio DJ Billy Block between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. every Sunday evening.

MICHELLE MURRAY HEADLINES FUNDRAISING DINNER..:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

(NASHVILLE, TN—July 28, 2008) On Tuesday, July 22, The Madison Church of Christ was packed for a mission trip fundraiser.   

The event included dinner and a concert.  Nearly every genre of music was covered: bluegrass, gospel, traditional country, new country, rock, pop, contemporary Christian and smooth jazz. Michelle Murray headlined the show, and quickly won the crowd over with her strong vocals and truly entertaining show.

Over twelve thousand dollars was raised to help fund the weeklong mission trip to Donetsk, Ukraine in September. A group, including members of Michelle's band will be working with two different children's hospitals and two different orphanages in the region.
