Current mood:  savage
Category: Travel and Places

Daau recently played on the Avant gardistic Skiff Festival in St Petersburg, yep indeed in the land of Wodka, Lada and wrong dictators. But a fine experience it was....a very cool festival in a gorgeous theater of lost glory, where also fine acts such as ZU, Black Engine, FM Einheit (of Einsturzende Neubauten), Analogic, Leafcutter John etc...where scheduled. And friendly people, who were really concerned about our wellbeing.

See our picssection for a small impression.

Have a good summer !!

We left Antwerp very early to catch the plane that will take us to Kopenhagen,

with a transfer  in Munchen. Kristianstad in Sweden is the first stop and is a two

hour drive away from Kopenhagen. The check-in of our beloved instruments at Zaventem airport was once again a big hassle. This time even Simon and Hannes would play on rented instruments, so we only brought the accordeon, cymbals, some side effects for the mixing and a recorder and multiple cd burner for our experiment: selling live cd's of every show !

The accordion was put aside, but the desk clerk assured us that it surely was going to be picked up later by the luggage carriers. NOT !!! When we stood and waited at the baggage claim at Kopenhagen airport, everything arrived except for .......the accordion. When complaining about this, we learned that the accordion didn't make it to the aircraft after all. So much for trustworthy employees of Lufthansa. We got picked up by Hokan, with a van very simular to the Highway Tiger

and filled with gear, yummy: a gretch drumkit, a full PA system, a double bass, cello....but no accordion. Hokan immediately started phoning around for one. Unfortunately Roel plays on a very specific type of instrument, that is very hard to find.

But finally a solution was found: A digital accordion that can be programmed the way you want. But a) it sounds like crap, b) it reacts in a digital way c) Roel hated it.

However he had to play our first show on it anyway, needless to say we decided not to sell live cd's of that show.

In the meantime after several phonecalls, Lufthansa promised us to put the accordion on the next plane. So we all put our thumbs up that it would arrive before the next gig in Bastad (pronounced Bostad) The Hotel Skansen where  the gig would take place, was a gorgeous hotel, situated by the seaside

'the stage' was actually in front of the swimming pool, seperated by a window.

Because we couldn't make a soundcheck during check out of the hotelguests, several daau-members enjoyed the swimming pool, sauna and steambath accomodations of Skansen hotel. There are worse ways to kill the waiting hours before a soundcheck or show.

Finally a soundcheck could be made, but when our beloved soundengineer Mark, checked the mixing desk........it malfunctioned: No eq's could be used without a terrible noise...and no time to get another soundboard. After discussing the problem we decided to play totally acoustic. This was possible due to the great acoustic sound in the hotel, but was only possible if Roel's accordion arrived on time. Drums needed to be quiet down a lot, so i started to collect towels and gaffatape to do so. In the meantime the accordion arrived 10 minutes before showtime....and what a show it was !!! A total unamplified spectacle that turned out to be a great experience for both bandmembers and a very attentive audience. But ..........again no recordings of this show, cause we damn well need a mixingboard to do so !!!

After all the hassle with gear, we could only hope that things will go uphill...otherwise we would have brought the recording and cd burning stuff for nothing.

Fortunately Dunker Kulturhus in Helsingborg,

have a simular mixing desk..............but unfortunately with the simular problem !  The only solution left was a digital Yamaha desk, the kind that Mark really hates to work with.

But we managed all right, played a decent show and finally were able to record the concert and sell cd's afterwards.

Backstageromance @ Dunkers Kulturhus, Helsingborg

This morning we also met our new tourmanager/driver/roadie for the rest of the tour in the hotellobby.....Janne was a fine replacement for Hokan...a baldheaded pierced dirty son of bitch, with great humor, driving and roadie skills...We all wished we could pack him in our trunks and take him to Belgium with us.

After Helsingborg we had to travel to Stockholm already,

since Roel had to leave the tour for one day to appear in a Belgian TV-show with Dez Mona, and had to catch a plane to return home for one day. The other gigs where all in a circle less than 200km from Stockholm, so nothing better than spending a day off in  Sweden's capital.  Nice city, with lovely architecture

and taste for blending modern design with it, but the nightlife still was kinda dissapointing for the nightbirds among us.

Next gig was in a cosy tiny theatre in a small town called Södertalje, where only 20 people showed  up. In the meantime Simon and myself found a cure for boredom: we dress up the merchtable with founded attributes, funny and a great eyecather for sure if there was an audience.  But almost everyone bought a cd that night !!!!

The next day Kungsör was on the schedule, a Twin Peakish little town, clean, almost no living soul on the streets and to add to the Twin Peaks athmosphere.....the cute backery next to the Thor Modéen Theatre is actually the backstage entrance (check our videosection or youtube to see the living proof !!)

This theatre is actually a movietheatre where concerts take place as well once in a while. Red Velvet all over (Lynch would feel at home here)  great acoustics, but again not much of an audience and a rather strange one too.

Back to Stockholm then,

only to return the next day in the same area at the konserthuset of Västeras, a warm welcome and a full house this time, a music lover's crowd that was rather lyrical about our performance as well.

After the concert we went to a skyscraper restaurant, situated on the 23rd floor to enjoy an expensive but great meal, with an impressive view over Västeras.

After this gig we had two days off, in which Roel and Mark had to return to Belgium again for a Dez Mona concert in Bruges.

Our hardworking crew: Mark & Janne

My urge for partying grew on me, fortunately i was invited to attent a private, more or less underground party organised by the son of one of the Riksconcerter (our tourorganiser) ladies. They have a dj-team called 24hours party people and yes they throw 24 hour parties. In the beginning i was a bit bored there, but the music got better after a while (a wide variety of dance music) and all of sudden people all started to smoke inside, what a rebellious act in Sweden, needless to say i lit myself a ciggy immediately. Drinks where cheap and so where the women dancing around all sweatty. A first descent night out in Stockholm allright. The rest of the days we spend on culture (museum),

And simular to Twin Peaks: Horses appeared

sightseeing, sauna's, shopping and dining with our tourorganisers.

Börlange was next.....again a small town 300km upnorth the country and the first time we saw some snow. Wasabryggeriet as the venue was called, is a former brewery with a small concertstage that couldn't be more twin peakish. White and red tiles all over, red curtains and did i mention the log on stage.

The only thing missing in cateringroom, with mother and daughter preparing the food behind a counter filled with pie and cookiejars, was a camera and David Lynch yelling "cut".

But again a full room with strange yet friendly and enthousiastic people. After the concert no roses where handed to us (as in some other theatres) but a Börlangerknucklen and small packet of yeast.  The Börlangerknucklen, nothing more than some scrap metal coming from the local steelfactory was given there for good luck. The yeast was to remind us on the previous function of the building: a beerbrewery as i mentioned before. We would have been happy with just some more beers. But this night was a highlight so far.

Since we were 300km away from Stockholm we stayed the night at a local hotel, and since there where no bars in the area, we had a small hotellobby party. A good breakfast, a morning sauna and whirlpool got us in the right mood to travel back to Stockholm for our last Swedish gig.

Our Stockholm hotel

Stallet (stable) was a wooden room in a big building where also the offices of Riksconcerter where located, again a full house with even some Belgian and Dutch people in the crowd. A pretty cool last gig, but no party afterwards. Only some more beers/whisky in one of the many Irish pubs (but what a whisky collection). I had an early night anyway, cause the travelday back to Belgium was actually my birthday,

so i would have my party in any case in good old Antwerp. After a warm welcome by my girlfriend and the neccersary presents, nothing would suit me more than a drink and a cigaret in my favorite bar, strange..... normally the first thing to do back in Belgium is eating fries, guess we missed inside smoking a whole lot more.

Kipke or Moniek is a longtime dedicated Daau-addict, she keeps a Daau-diary on her own website www.convertiblechaos.com
and you can visit her on myspace aswell.

This time she decided to spend her holidays on the road with her beloved A-men (as she reffers to daau) while making herself usefull with taking care of the Merchandise, dangerously waving her camera around and writing this report how she experienced the last Holland and Danish dates of the "2006 Domestic Wildlife Tour".

ON THE ROAD IN THE HIGHWAY TIGER...

Ok, prepare folks, cause this is gonna be the longest review ever... mainly because it contains 4 a-gigs and 1 prima donkey... and this all in 4 days... but first things first: it wasn't my first ride in the famous 'highway tiger', but surely the longest one... it all began in den haag at crossing border...

we arrived on time in den haag to load in the a-stuff and do a proper soundcheck... but ! the prima donkeys wouldn't be there for their soundcheck which makes that we were too early (as you know, three of the a-men play along with prima)... anyhow, sit around and wait... soundcheck of the a-men now - but alas, faith struck down again and blew up the soundboard (which was just replaced - as this has happened before)... bloody hell... luckily cb had a soundboard, so nothing was lost... between soundcheck and gig there wasn't much time: people where fillin' the hall where daau was playin' that night... lots of empty space in front of the stage though, but nonetheless an attentive audience... 50 minutes of anarchy and that's that... time for dinner i'd say (which was pretty good for holland)... and aha ! there are the donkeys now :-) helas, too late for dinner, as the kitchen just threw all the food straightaway in the bin.. there's no time to be wasted here in holland...

a quick soundcheck on donkey-stage (in a nice and cosy room) and off we go ! same setlist as the night before, but a much nicer gig alltogether - everyone seemed more relaxed and the nice venue contributed his share in this... people screamed for more, rudy asked the venue-guys whether they could play one more, but nope, it was time for them to clean up apparently... so far for freedom... and that they are strict in all this showed again in the backstage... 4 times they gave us subtle hints to move our asses outside the building... in the end we moved allright, but not before we got some tickets for the infamous afterparty... and this is how seven a-men and myself ended up in a gayish looking heineken bar... party was allright though (boots showed off with his very enthusiastic breakdance-skills) & when champaign was served (cheers R), the tour had kicked off alright !

too little sleep and a long drive ahead, we all got into the highway tiger... did some sleepin', some readin', some eatin' & some smoke-stoppin'... ah life can be so simple and stressless... finally we arrived in the town aarhus, which is in the north of denmark... seemed like a nice town to wander around, helas, no time as it is already soundchecktime... the venue is called fabriken and is an old chocolate factory... exactly my cup of tea ! no real probs with the soundcheck, some confusion bout the loudness of the speakers, but that would all solve itself when time comes... ok, then a quick run to the mexican restaurant where we had like exactly half an hour to order, wait and eat (who said something bout no stress ?!)... the quick burrito was still bein' swallowed when we headed back to fabriken... place was already crowded... i can say just one thing bout this gig (and will say this only once) : fantastic !

the crowd was in for it, as was the band - always a good combination... one minor thing: it seemed that there were some weird lookin' extremists in the room lookin' for trouble... luckily they didn't get what they wanted and in the changeover (gettin' ready for a dj-set - so everyone was removed from the room) they were gone... so afterparty again ! you had several rooms in fabriken, in the mainroom where the a-men played there was a techno dj-set (it just ain't my style babe) and in the other room it was more hiphopkindastyle... so hiphop it was... "shakin' that ass/shakin' that ass"... oh, i'd almost forget: i even met a fan of my diary ! ok, she was more a fan of the a-men, but she liked and knew my site as well :-) maybe i have some competition here in who's the biggest a-fan ?! i guess we all better watch our backs now ;-)

all sweet stories do come to an end, so when the beats where borin' enough, we switched the beats for a quiet chat in the backstage and after that we switched this for a good night rest in our hotel... but ha ! tiger bad luck: another fine for 'wrong parkin'...tsss... goodnightienight...

next mornin'... barely awake i found myself shoppin' with buni... he needed socks and we both needed breakfast... h%26m, always a good bet, no ? buni asked the lady where they  kept the male socks and she simply said "no, we don't have that"... weirdos... but nothing to be done about it, we needed to get goin' for the boat... and this was a splendid idea: to catch some fresh cold and windy sea-air into my longs... aah, i just love the sea... but soon enough we switched our sealegs for carfeet again (or the highway walrus for tiger) and hupsakee, off we go... maybe one detail: we stopped for a smoke -ehr fresh air- break in a gasstation in roskilde... see, i was in roskilde in 2006 !

tonight's gig was in "kulturhuset islands brygge" and was part of a festival... 2 bands a night - daau was second that night, so first one to soundcheck / and that's where it all went wrong... but first : the place itself (i am a small bastard ain't i ?)... well, the place was very nice, they had lovely chairs and all and an amazing view (when you where on stage you where lookin' at the river)... very classy, trendy and cool... this promised a non-dancin' audience tonight... ok, everything was on stage now, everything connected, soundcheck was about to start... but hey, what's that ? fireworks across the river ! nice ! anyhow, work has to be done, so bootsie was first to soundcheck... no probs.. next one: simon... and that's the magical part: he got electrical shocks from his mic and soundboard... not so good... marc (Daau's soundguy) luckily is an expert and he looked into the matter... it seemed that there where troubles with the connection to earth (aarding as we call it)... nothing was to be soundchecked untill the problem was solved (too dangerous and we didn't want to lose simon in this)... an electrician was called to look into the matter and so we waited and waited and waited... finally the problem was fixed (not before marc got his share of 220 high voltage into his body) and soundcheck could continue... pffft, that was a long one...

dinner was bein' served (pasta and chicken) and then there was -again- time to kill... one option was to go and see the other (swedish) band play, but as we could have seen from the instruments they had and from the looks of their cd-graphics, this wasn't exactly our cup of tea... some of us tried nonetheless, but made it back into the backstage pretty quick... "a lot of people are goin' to suffer tonight...."

time for rock n roll now... lounja wasn't even finished yet and some people already hit and run out of there... but the ones who stayed didn't complain afterwards, they were bewildered by all this beauty (as one man said after the gig "the most amazing thing i have ever seen")... so, good deeds were done again :-)

oh, my compliments to the light-men as well, as he didn't know the music - he did a pretty good job though ! afterwards there wasn't any party, so it would be an 'early' night in...

btw/ i just noticed this was my 50th daau-gig !

next day i awoke in a cold and cloudy copenhagen... nonetheless i went out for a walk (cause today we stayed in the same town, so no drivin' around today)... i was almost frozen when i bumped into two familiar faces (s & r) and joined them for a nice cappucino... what the hell, i even joined for a japanese soup & sushi ! what are the chances huh ?! but then it was time to get back, christiania was waitin' for some anarchy ! christiania was easily found, but how to get inside and to the venue was something else... we drove around and got some angry looks cause "no cars in christiania !"... eventually we made it, and unloaded the gear, which was transported upstairs with a cage... very cool... one more soundcheck and it was finished on time (cause 18h30 the restaurant upstairs opens, so no noise then)... dinnertime: some stoemp with lamb (it was lamb right ?)... as it was pretty cold in the room and we had all finished, we headed upstairs to join jim (the danish booker and alright fella)... to my surprise he was sittin' at the table with mr. stuart a staples :-)

let me inform you that i am a very big fan of mr. staples - mainly because of tindersticks... we were on the guestlist for stuart's gig (which started at 21h, a-men wouldn't start before 22h at least), so han, buni, simon and me headed towards amager bio where stuart was playin'... a good gig, although not the best one i've seen (was it because it still seemed surreal, because it was like an opening act for the a-men, because i was in need of some sleep, ... ?)

when the encores where about to start we drove back to our venue (loppen) to find that there where not too many people (50?), so we waited untill 23h and then hit the scene... good sound, amazin' crowd and an amazin' gig alltogether... me, i was walkin' around a bit to get some pics and suddenly i bumped into a shakin' darkhaired man that i knew... oh yes, it was the guitarplayer from tindersticks ! so, i looked a bit further and yes: there was the rest of mr staples and band !!  what a night ! go and see mr. staples with my most beloved a-men and afterwards go and see the a-men with mr. staples !!

as it was sundaynight there was no afterparty, so we loaded the gear into the tiger and headed for the hotel... except i didn't feel like sleepin' just yet.. bootsie, han %26 buni were in for some more drinks as well, so we started walkin' to town (and no bootsie, this was more than 10 minutes !)... across the bridge, we passed tivoli and we ended up in the 'center'... we ate the worst durum i ever had and drank some beer in an irish pub... elvis was playin' when we entered, so this was the place we needed to be... except music went bad after this, sleep hit in and we drove back -cabwise- to the hotel...

and that was that... the last day (the day of the return) is pretty borin' - drive, take a boat, drive, sleep, read, eat, sleep, drive, wait, ... around midnight i was home... i said goodbye to the highway tiger and to my lovely a-men... untill we meet again, my friends...

In between France, two 13 hour flights, smog and smells and flocks of scooters on highways to hell. A city with a population that considers surgeon masks as a fashion. At least they're a little concerned about their health. From a cultural centre that looks like an abandoned barrack to an arts centre that appears like a modern temple. Façade seemed more important than knowledge.

Underneath a humble, almost submissive attitude towards things Western, a sort of  'own people first' in reverse theory. Lies a deep hospitality, friendlyness and kindness towards people in general. They know and take pride in their traditions, but gladly put them aside in order to get accepted.

But our acceptance was there, no matter what. Despite the slight culture shock, stomache protests and headaches.
we shared a love, a passion... for music....  and  laughter with both our cultural differences.

Taiwanese dreams: only the awakening is rude.
