Singer To Singer: An Interview with Maysa Leak by LEDISI 1. Growing Up:
We all know you grew up in Baltimo (laughing)and we all know you worked with Stevie Wonder and Incognito. If they don't know now they know. But I want to ask you about experiences.
What were you like as a child?
As a child ,I was very shy,mostly introverted,but friendly.
Do you miss anything about your childhood?
I miss my childhood alot...I loved it. I was surrounded by a fun and loving family. My parents provided us (me and my two younger brothers..and countless cousins) with everything we needed and wanted, yet they still taught us the value of life and love and GOD and money.
Was there an elder in your life that helped you grow?
My grandparents were awesome. My father's mother was in the Holiness Church and I remember not being able to get in her car with pants on...and she made us call her Grandmother instead of Grandma like we wanted to...my mothers father was fun to be around..he had great sayings like " don't cuss call us"?? and " a chicken aint nothing but a bird!"?? We used to laugh at him all the time.
Who introduced you to music?
My parents and aunts and uncles played music ALL DAY AND NIGHT...my parents used to host these great blue light in the basement parties..my mother used to turn the stereo up very loud to make us get up for school in the morning..her favorite song was Early in the Morning by the GAP BAND..
When was the first time you sang?
The first time I sang, according to my mother was when I was three years old. I used to sing for whoever would ring the front door bell!
When did you realized this is what I want to do?
I realized I wanted to be a singer when my mother took me to see Purlie when I was six years old. When Melba Moore hit the stage and opened her mouth to sing..I remember the exact feeling of joy in the deepest part of my heart.I will never ever forget that feeling.
2. Love:
Okay as a singer everything effects our mood and chile ain't nothing like being in love it can make us saaaang a song!
Do you find that you create, sing and perform better when you are in love or when your're not?
Well I actually sing better when I am angry for some reason. I remember being angry at my son's father(before Jazz was born) on stage at an Incognito concert in Germany. I was singing Deep Waters, and he had upset me just before we went on stage, and I let him have it so bad he told me after the show that he felt that in his bones!!!!
Have you ever performed mad and wanted to leave the stage but couldn't?How did you deal with that?I know for me I sing better when I am mad at somebody. It's strange people love when I'm upset.I pour out more.Sorry for adding my two cents. What about you?
I have performed mad,sad and glad!! I have cried many nights during the show when i just couldn't act my way out of it.
In your opinion how should a man treat his woman?
In my opinion,a man should treat his woman with love and respect and compassion. That's how I would treat my man. I would expect or hope for the same in return.
3.Lead Singer Syndrome:
What happen the first time you wanted to stretch out and do an album without Incognito? What was that like for you?I ask this because most lead singers who are introduced to the world through a band or group eventually leave and do their own thing. Some leave because of bitter reasons and some leave because it's a natural progression.Looks like you never left but you make sure you do your own thing. What are your reasons for venturing out on your own?
I venture out on my own from Incognito so that I can express myself fully. With Incognito,I see myself as an extension of Bluey's creations. When I am a solo artist,I express my desires and experiences the way I want to. Without any compromise. I have both careers because I am blessed and I am grateful to make music this way.
4.Music:
Speaking of love and Music your new record.I love it!You sound so free and SEXY MAMA!(laughing)The Pimp Hat is Dope!!!!(laughing some Mo)When we were hanging out in Blackpool you told me a lil about the wreckord but yo ain't said all that!Betcha By Golly Wow!Love it! Why this album? Why these songs girlfriend?
I did this Sweet Classic Soul record because Shanachie Records asked me to do this special project with them, and because it was an opportunity to devote a whole record to paying respect to the artists and songwriters who influenced me heavily when I was teaching myself how to sing back in the 70's. These particular songs were chosen because they hold a special place in my heart. Some of the more sexier songs mean a lot to me because they made me feel things I wasn't supposed to be feeling yet at such a young age,and now that I'm grown I wanted to sing them LEGALLY!!! :)
What is your favorite song on the record and why?
My favorite song on this record is First Time Ever I Saw Your Face.. It's my favorite Roberta Flack song..and at the time I recorded it I was starting to fall in love with a man I have known for a long time. Sadly, it didn't work out..but I am still waiting a beautiful Prince Charming to show up someday. I still believe in the fairytale.
