The One Take Sessions return for their July outing this Thursday night in the recently re-decorated back room of Cleere's Theatre, bringing along four acts for the night including Fia Rua, Roy Shiels, Walkperson and local band, South.

A newcomer to the One Take Sessions, Eoghan Burke aka Fia Rua, sings his own songs, usually with people playing along. He likes "having a big sound live, but also really enjoy the intimacy of doing it alone or with a fiddle player."

Originally from Kildare and a drummer in a former life, he took a holiday to Kinvara in Galway some ten years ago, and never returned, instead turning to writing and performing on guitar, drawing on influences between the lines of the Pogues and Nirvana.

"My songs are about all sorts of things, usually the story or feeling comes very suddenly then builds, sometimes a song could evolve continuously, with other people adding their pieces. I believe this music is the only thing that I know will never leave me while I'm alive and well on planet earth."

Roy Shiels is a 28 year old multi-instrumentalist & songwriter from Rush, north Co. Dublin. He draws upon influences such as Smashing Pumpkins, Beach Boys, Slint & Talking Heads and has honed his craft as a songsmith in various cover bands as a professional musician since the age of 22.

His live shows are represented as solo acoustic and electric band performances, with accompaniment from Charles Byrne (bass) and Declan Doyle (drums). His intimate Dublin shows feature french-born cellist Sofiane Mebarek and Róisín Dexter on violin. For more on Roy, visit myspace.com/royshiels.

He's spent time in London, lived in France, lived in Canada, recorded an EP in Quebec, performed with Socialite (Sligo), Thy Swan Army (Galway) and last year he made his OTS debut. So it's a welcoming thing that Pearse McGloughlin, plying his trade as Walkperson, makes a return to the back room of Cleere's to promote of the release of debut album, Busy Whisper.

Native of Sligo and now resident in Dublin, Pearse McGloughlin
creates beautifully haunting songs of forgotten moments and quiet reflection. Dreamy and atmospheric, his work has an organic aesthetic reminiscent of Mazzy Star or Grand Salvo. He's already released the single, Changeling, from the new album earlier this year and according to his critics, great things are both promised and expected from him. You can sample Walkperson in advance of Thursday night by visiting myspace.com/walkperson.

Topping the bill at the 'Sessions are Kilkenny's own South. Winners of last year's Battle Of The Bands, the three-piece have cut their teeth in the studio over the past few months, the result coming in the form of debut album Insula, set for release later this month. The band (Thomas Donoghue, Ken Farrell, Alan Dawson), perform an acoustic set in preparation for their full electric appearance in the same venue on Saturday July 25th alongside The Lions Mane.

In advance of Insula, they've also released The Making Of Insula, an episodic fly-on-the-wall look at the making of the album, produced by local photographer Ross Costigan. The episodes are available by visiting myspace.com/southkk.

Doors open at 9:15pm with the first act taking to the stage at 9:30pm. The cost of admission is a recession-busting zero Euro and more details on each act are available on OneTakeSessions.com and KilkennyMusic.com.

Diarmuid Comerford, Bailer, The Resistance, Jimi Cullen and Johnny B
make up one of the biggest (in numbers) bills for the One Take Sessions
this coming Thursday night in Cleere's Theatre as the series continues
for its second outing of 2009.

"This is one of our biggest nights in terms of numbers of artists
since we've started", says one of the organisers, Ken McGuire. "The
demand for slots at the 'Sessions for the first half of the year has
been incredible, and while it will be a busy night this Thursday, we're
delighted to welcome back a mix of familiar faces and new faces to the
venue."

Diarmuid Comerford hails from Wexford and is no stranger to the One
Take Sessions series having performed during 2008 and 2007. Diarmuid
Comerford spent the year that was 2007 touring around Ireland's
acoustic nights as well as a short London tour accompanied by the
drumming brilliance that is Conor Stafford. The electric guitars have
been dusted off a bass player in the form of  Cupid was added to the
lineup last year. This week's performance will be Comerford's third in
as many years, with videos of his previous nights available on Kilkenny
Music TV.

Fronted by Catriona McGuinness, Bailer was formed in 2001 and the
band has performed at leading venues and festivals all over Ireland
including The Point Theatre and Vicar Street. Regular supports with
some of Ireland’s most popular acts like Aslan and The Hothouse Flowers
have provided tremendous exposure.

Following a few EP releases, the band bring with them debut album
Running, recorded in Dublin and released last July. Produced by Bobby
Bought and mastered by industry legend Bob Katz, the album echoes all
the melody and vitality of the band's acoustic-driven live material
while adding a brass section with some featuring some of the country's
finest jazz and classical musicians. While there might not be a brass
section in Cleere's this week, you can be assured of top-drawer
performance  from this four-piece making a welcome return to Kilkenny.

'Running’ is the debut album from Irish band Bailer. Recorded in
Dublin over the course of a year it features all the melody and
vitality of Bailer’s acoustic driven live material, with the added
excitement of a brass section featuring some of Ireland’s finest jazz
and classical musicians. The album was produced by Bobby Boughton and
mastered by US industry legend Bob Katz.

Dublin quintet The Resistance make their One Take Sessions debut
this week. There are few bands out there that write intelligent music.
There are few bands that come up with perfect harmony lines that
capture your attention immediately. But when the right ingredients come
to play and a right meeting of minds, there are no boundaries. This
band began with a meeting of minds -“Rob and Dave” wrote all these well
thought and crafted songs at home. Next came the additional musicians
to give it new dimensions. Thus making up The Resistance. With a number
of accolades already on their belt (Pick of the Week on Phantom FM,
Pick of the Fortnight in Hotpress Magazine and numerous radio support
Nationwide) the band have just completed their debut album, Bag of
Bones.

A troubadour. The junkyard poet. Some of the names associated with
Gorey's Jimi Cullen who returns to the One Take Sessions for his fifth
show over the past three years. Jimi has established himself as a
'Sessions crowd favourite, his political meanderings through song often
leaving the crowd in stitches. If you want to go on a journey from
protest songs through love songs to those that squeeze every drop of
emotion out of you, then Jimi Cullen is the man for you. You will laugh
and nod with understanding when he sings of hangovers and you'll cry
when he reminds you of how many of us walk by homeless people on the
street. Cullen can also be counted amongst the hardest working
performers on the singer-songwriter circuit with over 500 shows to his
credit in recent years.

Finally, from Cahir, Co. Tipperary, comes Johnny B with debut album
Wrestle With The Devil. Fresh from an appearance in Brazil's in Clonmel
on Wednesday, Johnny is the third act this week making a 'Sessions
debut. The album, released at the start of the year sees all proceeds
from sales go to the Chernobyl Childrens Projects.

For more details on each of the acts, plus music and video, visit
KilkennyMusic.com or OneTakeSessions.com. The second One Take Sessions
night of 2009 kicks off at 9:30pm this Thursday night in the intimate
surrounds of the back room in Cleere's on Parliament Street. First act
takes to the stage with each act performing a twenty-minute set. With
five acts on the bill and a running order decided on the night, those
interested in attending this week's free gig are urged to get down
early to grab a seat.

Highlights of the last One Take Sessions in March, including
performances from Bill Coleman, are available now on both
KilkennyMusic.com and leading Irish online music video site, Muzu.tv.
Photo coverage by Kilkenny Music's Ross Costigan are also available on
the site.

A short one but we've been inundated with requests for gigs before the end of the year and we just don't have the room!

Between ourselves, the 'Sessions and the venues we're working with there's just no room to squeeze in any more shows before Christmas.

We've published the 2009 dates for the One Take Sessions and some 2009 weekend dates are on the way, once they're gone that's it!

Keep sending in your requests, but unless you hear otherwise, there's no room at the inn for the rest of 2008, sorry guys!

Three-piece progressive rock outfit South have been named as the winners of the 2008 Battle Of The Bands in what was the closest contested final in the eight years of the competition under Hype Entertainment. For their efforts, the band walk away with an EP recording package from the Mill Studio in Kilkenny, a full web, pr and photography package from KilkennyMusic.com and Ross Costigan Photography.

In second place were four-piece metal outfit Kerbstomp who walk away with a recording package from Broderick's Music Warehouse.

Official press piece aside, this was genuinely one of the toughest competitions to judge in recent years, or at least as long as we've been involved anyway (the last three years). We had the four best bands in the final in the form of South, Kerbstomp, Decadation (last year's finalists) and Teratoria (last year's semi-finalists) but none of us could have anticipated how close a decision it was in the end.

Credit to the four finalists today, each of them upped their game in a big way from their respective heats, each band realising the prizes at stake. As organiser Andrew McGuinness said before announcing the winners "when you enter a competition you have to be prepared to be disappointed" as was the case with those who couldn't take home the prizes today.

In a change to the prize giving, it was decided that a Judges Prize of Best Musician would be named after the finalists, that prize going to Decadation / Kerbstomp drummer Daire Nolan.

Some members of bands were visibly disappointed in the decision but you'll have that every year and we'd hope they wouldn't take it to heart. Each band gave it their all but ultimately there can only be one winner and we wish South all the very best with their prize haul and we're looking forward to working alongside them in the coming months.

As we've mentioned on the forums, we're happy to talk to bands that were involved in the competition to provide feedback (that's what we do) and we've been talking to a few bands already. We would also hope to see each band back in the competition next year with 2009 set to see a further increase in bands, sponsors and prizes.

Ross will have photos in the new KilkennyMusic.com gallery either tonight or tomorrow (Monday) and we'll be covering the entire run of the competition on this week's Sound System Podcast. We'll also have some video footage of all four bands in action going live on YouTube over the next few days.

Have your say by leaving a comment below or jump into the thick of the action over in the forum.
