........................
A
boy heard the voice of the whippoorwill one night and went out to find where he
was singing. He had to walk quite a way
through a big field, because the song of the whippoorwill carried so well in
the wind he sounded much closer than he really was. And on the way the boy found a well worn
trail, so he stayed on it for a while.
And sitting in the middle of the trail was Coyote, and Coyote was
singing too.....
He turned and saw the boy and he
said, “Why are you following me?!”....
The boy was frightened and said,
“Well the trail you made happened to be a short and easy way through this
field.”....
Then Coyote asked, “Well if you’re
not following me then why are you here?”....
“Well I heard the beautiful song of
the whippoorwill and wanted to watch him sing.”....
“Well do you not think my songs are
beautiful?” said Coyote.....
“Oh”, said the boy, “They’re good
but I hear you all the time. I much
prefer the songs of the whippoorwill.”....
This made coyote furious and he was
jealous of the whippoorwill’s song. He
said, “Listen to my night song you might like this one.” And he pulled back his head and yodeled out a
tune. The boy covered his ears and
politely said, “Thank you for the song, but I must be going now.”....
“Well”, Coyote said, “I can show you
a shortcut to the whippoorwill, boy, and where he sings is just over
there.” Pointing his claw, smiling out
of the side of his mouth.....
The boy paused, looked around, he
knew the night was passing fast so he agreed to follow Coyote. But Coyote’s trail was rough and rocky. And the boy fell in quite a few Gopher holes
along the way. Coyote turned around and
laughed and he yelled to the boy, “We’re almost there, hurry up.” Coyote was at a full trot but the boy had
just fallen again and hurt his knee.....
And by the time he got to the place
where the whippoorwill had been singing all night, it was morning. Whippoorwill was gone. And so was Coyote. In fact he could hear Coyote’s songs in
another field.....
So the boy turned and headed for
home, covered with burrs, mosquito bites, and a skinned up knee.....
And it was many summers later when
the boy became a wiser man. And he
realized, there are no shortcuts to find something you really love. But there are many trails in this life. So you must stay true to your path, and
always keep an eye out for Coyote.....

*I have been trying to find a very specific version of this legend for several years but have been unsuccessful. I found this version and just modified it to resemble what I remember from the version I like.
The Hummingbird and the Crane were both in love with a pretty woman. She preferred the Hummingbird, who was as handsome as the Crane was awkward, but the Crane was so persistent that in order to get rid of him she finally told him he must challenge the other to a race and she would marry the winner. The Hummingbird was so swift--almost like a flash of lightning--and the Crane so slow and heavy, that she felt sure the Hummingbird would win. She did not know the Crane could fly all night. They agreed to start from her house and fly around the circle of the world to the beginning, and the one who came in first would marry the woman. At the word the Hummingbird darted off like an arrow and was out of sight in a moment, leaving his rival to follow heavily behind. He flew all day, and when evening came and he stopped to roost for the night he was far ahead. But the Crane flew steadily all night long, passing the Hummingbird soon after midnight and going on until he came to a creek and stopped to rest about daylight. The Hummingbird woke up in the morning and flew on again, thinking how easily he would win the race, until he reached the creek and there found the Crane spearing tadpoles, with his long bill, for breakfast. He was very much surprised and wondered how this could have happened, but he flew swiftly by and soon left the Crane out of sight again. The Crane finished his breakfast and started on, and when evening came he kept on as before. This time it was hardly midnight when he passed the Hummingbird asleep on a limb, and in the morning he had finished his breakfast before the other came up. The next day he gained a little more, and on the fourth day he was spearing tadpoles for dinner when the Hummingbird passed him. On the fifth and sixth days it was late in the afternoon before the Hummingbird came up, and on the morning of the seventh day the Crane was ' a whole night's travel ahead. He took his time at breakfast and then fixed himself up as nicely as he could at the creek and came in at the starting place where the woman lived, early in the morning. When the Hummingbird arrived in the afternoon he found he had lost the race, but the woman declared she would never have such an ugly fellow as the Crane for a husband, so she stayed single. The Crane was hurt by this. He folded up his long neck, spread his wings and flew away. Some of the People say that he turned the pain of his rejection into the beauty of his flight. Cranes do not furiously flap their wings, but rather glide on the wind with grace and serenity.

One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people. He said, "My son, the battle is between two wolves inside us all.
"One
is Evil - It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed,
arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false
pride, superiority, and ego.
"The other is Good - It is joy,
peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy,
generosity, truth, compassion and faith."
The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: "Which wolf wins?"
The old Cherokee simply replied, "The one you feed."

Bruce, a deity in his own mind, proclaimed, “I had to yell at a Raccoon last night. He listened.”
Wolf, while playing in a field somewhere, laughed. “You mean someone
actually listened to you for once? Shit, now I gotta call Guinness...”
Bruce was annoyed by this and retorted, “What, you need a beer just to listen to me...?”
And the Heavens proclaimed
‘...and a Raccoon shall lead them.’
“Ah” but Wolf replied, “No... I need a beer to listen to you. I need 5 beers before you start making sense.”
And the Heavens proclaimed
‘...and Wolf shall feast upon the Raccoon.’
Bruce declared from his celestial throne, “But at least I make sense at some point. Alcohol usually helps.”
And the Heavens proclaimed
‘...And so Wolf feasted upon the Raccoon, and it was good.’
Wolf looked up from his meal and remarked, "But it really doesn't taste funny at all, like you said it would."
Bruce bellowed from the Heavens, "That's because you're supposed to eat the clown, idiot."

Anyone who knows me is aware that everything I do has a reason. Every thought, every action, has meaning. I calculate every decision even the ones I KNOW are going to get me into trouble. Many MANY years ago I found a beautiful card that I became fascinated with. I always thought it would be neat to get a tattoo one day but I never do the easy thing or the popular choices. If I'm going to be marked for life it's not going to be a cliched tribal arm band, or a naked woman, or the Chinese character they "said" means "tranquility" but really means "chicken with broccoli". And, no, I wouldn't get a tramp stamp. It had to have meaning. So I always though this card would make a great tattoo: For years it was "well, I don't have the money" or "I never have time to go" and "I don't know or trust anyone to do it"... yada yada yada...... It just so happened that my friend was planning a tattoo party and needed a set number of confirmed people in order to have it. No pun intended but something told me that it was in the cards and this was the time to do it. We all gathered and had a great time. In some ways I wanted to get it done just to silence the naysayers who were convinced I would chicken out or "cry like a little girl". This was not just a hang out and have fun thing. This was a serious Spiritual experience and there was meaning behind it, so I centered myself and called up my Wolf Spirit Guides. The initial stencil was laid down. Yes, I am checking email while getting it done And there it is. And wouldn't you know it, not only did I not cry but I never even offered a single flinch. Sure there were times where she'd hit a tender spot and I'd say, "ok that was rough" but never hurt at all. So NEENER NEENER.

It's funny sometimes. There's no rhyme or reason, no logic, to when or where or what will spark my imagination. Last Friday I was hanging out with friends and out of nowhere in the middle of good food, drinks, and friendly conversation I just stopped. I grabbed my phone, which luckily has a synced mobile version of Microsoft OneNote, and started writing. My face grew serious and focused and others were wondering what my issue was. Seriously folks, do I ever have issues? I'm a writer. I just think too much and feel too deeply. But I digress.... After a few minutes I had a rough draft of what you are about to read. Not much was changed except for a few lines, some shifts in the placement of lines, and the addition of punctuation. I hope you enjoy it and would love to hear your interpretations and comments.
“I Walk in the Shadows”
I am known to ordinary citizens, I walk through their hopes and dreams; My presence is felt by entire nations, As my feet leave faint imprints in their sands. I patiently walk through Time- And as twilight falls upon those who meet me Moonlight shimmers off my gray-black cloak, Like stars in the heavens.
When the first living thing existed I was there, Waiting in the shadows. For I am Death. I am the younger sister of my brother, Life. Together we travel the cosmos, Each playing our part in the delicate balance Of that which Man calls existence. We are known to all- From king to stable hand, From god to worshiper. There is no emotional tangle, No thought behind our actions; We each have a job to do- And we just do it.
Everyone is on their own path Their own journey through existence. My brother guides them onto the path, And I am there to help them leave.
Loved ones come and go- And the pain you feel when they leave Is in direct proportion To the joy their arrival brings.
They are dead. Their memories now exist within you.
You are alive. So live.
Enjoy the moments ahead And remember fondly the moments behind, And share those with others.
When the last living thing dies And the time comes for the universe to cease to exist My job will be finished. I will put the chairs up on the table… turn off the lights…. and quietly lock the door behind me as I leave……
