ExperimentFM is trying out a new earlier time for The Ambient, ExperimentFM's nightly program of ambient and atmospheric new age music.

But we want to know what really works for you. Earlier? Later?

Your opinion can impact the programming decisions at ExperimentFM. Please let us know when you'd listen most to ambient music.

A quick survey is available here:

Thanks for letting us know what's important to you!

Democracy Now: 2-hour special broadcasts for the Democratic and Republican National Conventions: 4pm-6pm weeks of August 25 and September 1.

March For Our Lives: special LIVE broadcast from the march at the Republican National Convention: 4-6pm on Tuesday, September 2. Democracy Now special moved to 6pm-8pm this day.

Details:

Democracy Now will be expanding to a special 2-hour broadcast during the weeks of the Democratic and Republican National Conventions, August 25-29 and September 1-5. ExperimentFM will carry these special expanded broadcasts one hour earlier than usual these weeks, 4pm-6pm, except Tuesday, September 2...

March For Our Lives will be broadcast live from outside the Republican National Convention on Tuesday, September 2 from 4-6pm. This live broadcast is a proudct of the folks who bring us the Homelessness Marathon earlier in the year.

Bringing anti-poverty awareness to the airwaves, this special one-time live broadcast from March For Our Lives will move Democracy Now to 6pm on the Tuesday, September 2nd.

Unfortunately, some music programming will need to be preempted to make room for these important broadcasts.  No worries, though-- the music returns afterward!

ExperimentFM's studios will have to move to a new home in the upcoming month, and we're afraid this may adversely affect some of our listeners. Can you help?

While we do not plan on any extended absences from the air, our move may change our coverage area, making ExperimentFM easier to receive on some radios, but more difficult to receive on others, depending upon where you fall within our expected coverage areas in Ames.

To avoid dropping cherished listeners, we're asking our listeners to give us a home!

That's right. ExperimentFM's transmission facilities are really quite compact and don't take up much space. But in order to be effective, we need a good place to broadcast from, preferably in the center of our listening area and somewhere up relatively high.

If you have an extra room, or an extra closet for that matter, and a window or a roof with quite a nice aerial view of Campustown or Downtown Ames, we could use you. Please consider donating your space to ExperimentFM!

If you know a person-- a tenant, a landlord or building owner, a business --who might meet this description, let them know about this opportunity to serve their community. We'd especially seek a place with reliable electrical service and very reliable Internet access available.

ExperimentFM is powered on a very light budget of listener contributions and volunteer labor, so we can't afford rent just anywhere (especially in this town!)-- we have to move where we can get a place. We're a transient underground operation, with everything we need to operate, including a home, provided by the community we serve.

Thank you for your consideration and your understanding! Stay tuned for more updates on how ExperimentFM's move may affect you.

Current mood:  gloomy
ExperimentFM and its greater Ames area listeners were happy to discover greatly increased range to 102.1's transmissions during the day Tuesday, earlier this week, an effect experienced when Star 102.5 temporarilly turned off its digital IBOC HD signal for the day.

Listeners enjoyed a listenable range to ExperimentFM's signal over much of Ames, something rarely experienced since the higher-powered interfering commercial station from Des Moines decided to start using HD. This effect of greater range may have been enhanced Tuesday by cooperative atmospheric conditions.

Unfortunately, Star 102.5 resumed its HD broadcasts on Wednesday, and ExperimentFM's listenable range was once again reduced to those lucky regions of the Campustown area, outside of which unfortunate listeners were treated to the noisy "hash" interference plaguing the areas on the radio dial surrounding 102.5.

ExperimentFM is sorry to report this return to the status-quo, but unfortunately our neighbors at 102.5 are legally entitled to cause destructive interference to range over which 102.1 has been able to share its musical, cultural, and informational progamming.

ExperimentFM is happy to remain on the air in whatever capacity circumstances allow, gratefully accepts whatever help listeners may offer to further the station's purpose, and looks forward to a future when ExperimentFM's seed planted Ames' FM dial can spread to reach a greater audience in our community.

ExperimentFM is considering replacing the 7pm hour of music weekday evenings with another hour of news/information/public affairs programming, such as what is already heard weekdays from 5-7pm.

Your feedback will be valuable in deciding whether this will actually happen. Listener feedback will help decide what type of programming listeners want to hear there.

When do you listen to music on ExperimentFM? Would this change/interrupt/disturb your music-listening habits?

When do you listen to the news/information/public affairs discussion programming on ExperimentFM? Would having a new hour of this compelling and enlightening discussion at 7pm augment or compliment what you listen to on ExperimentFM?

ExperimentFM knows that there are people passionate about the music they hear out there on the airwaves. ExperimentFM also knows there are listeners who would appreciate expansion in the station's news and discussion offerings.

Furtherso, ExperimentFM understands that change can be disruptive no matter what. What do you think? Please respond with your two cents!
