We've been busting our humps writing some seriously hot n' heavy new songs with our pummeling new PERMANENT rythm section with Dan Lutger on Drums and Jeanne McClure on Bass.  Big official welcome to Jeanne!!!  She's been filling in for us for a while, and after many nights of wooing with our Old Style filled kegerator and a little black magic, she's become a Reptoid!  We're really happy with the new sound, new songs and we're looking to start booking some shows in Sept. Get ready to have your face melted soon.....

Bassist hunt 2008 is still in progress. We've met some great players so far but we'd love to have a few more folks in to audition before making a final decision.

Here's what we're looking for.

In our dreams, the new 'toid bassist that is first and foremost a BASSIST. Not a guitarist who plays bass on the side. We need someone who plays hard and fast (most likely with a pick unless you've got fingers of titanium), can lock in with the drums, build dynamics, notice and fix tempo fluctuations, make the rhythm stick together like a hot peanut butter and jelly sandwich, and most of all make 4/4 feel like your pants are going to explode.

We're also looking for a Fender P-bass with Ampeg ALL tube amp thru a 8x10 kind of sound. If you don't yet have a pro rig, it's not quite a deal breaker, as long as you've got plans to get something very soon. We also need someone with a good deal of experience playing live, recording, and song writing. We're rehearsing 2x/wk and are in the middle of writing a new album. So we're hoping for someone who can jump comfortably into the writing process then hit the town and nearby cities for shows at least 2x/month. Also planning to get back in the studio asap. Back up vocals also a big plus, but not required.

We're happy to officially announce Dan Lutger as the new drummer for Reptoids! He completed all of his Reptoid initiation tasks will remarkable skill and bravery and has even advanced to level 3 mind control powers. Sweet!

You may know him from his kick ass drumming in Panther Style, and previously in The Dislexic Apachees. Check out this video of them playing at Metro with The Posies!!! Dyslexic Apaches and The Posies.

Or you may also know him from his side project LukuRocks photography.

Dan's Reptoids debut will be starting off with a bang at one of our most favorite venues, on a sweet Sat night, and with Jeanne McClure from Panther Style rocking tits on the bass guitar (hey! that's not sexist...she'd say so much herself)

Current mood:  nostalgic
On the spring equinox of 2008, the mysterious forces of the universe led to a significant changing of the 'toid.

We're very sad to announce that our dear Meg'toid and Chris'toid will be leaving the band. After some deep thoughts and tearful discussions it's become clear that keeping up with the Reptoids plan for world domination would interfere with their other life pursuits. For Chirs, he's been losing sleep and sanity to keep up with a full time job, his budding career in recording engineering, the Chris's Balls Love Blog, and his never ending crime fighting responsibilities. And for Meg, her brilliant drumming has caught the attention of the pro-drumming community, giving her many far more lucrative drumming opportunities than we could ever hope to match. Look for her performing in both Belgium and Japan this summer, and releasing her first single- a cover of Sussudio!. Sweet!!

Meg and Chris, we can't thank you enough for the blood, sweat, tears, laughs, screams, tasty riffs, stick twirls and awesome stage moves. We know for certain no other bassist in this city could rock hard enough to have edible panties thrown onstage!!! (mmmmm, sexy and nutritious). And we won't know what it'll be like to finish a show and not have several complete strangers come up to us and say nothing other than "Damn!! your drummer is awesome!". Reptoids will not be the same with out either of you.

You both leave some very talented shoes to fill. Even more difficult will be finding two people we enjoy playing with as much. The past several years have been so much fun! There's so many experiences we've shared together that would not have even been bearable without both of your laid back attitudes and senses of humor (driving to Madison in a blizzard-y truck graveyard, playing the burbs to an enormous empty venue with a Metallica cover band, being told we play great considering most girls don't have good motor skills, just to name a few!) It'll be so hard not to finish a song in practice and hear a quiet dolphin sound from behind the drums, or look over and see Chris humping the bass. We're also not sure how the songs will change without the fuel from a lengthy poop discussion or unwinding with a little bosa nova version of Crimes Against Humanity.

Our last show together coming up at the Red Line Tap Sat April 26 will be bitter sweet. We couldn't have been luckier to have met you both and to be able to share the last several years rocking with you!!

Our sincerest thanks to Trevor Fisher for sitting down with Melissa and Karen at a very smelly bar to discuss the making of our newest EP "Slayed", as well as the joys that go along with sticking up for your love of Motely Crue.

We're featured in the March issue of The Illinois Entertainer in their metal column "Caught in a Mosh".

Friday, February 01, 2008
Tomorrow - Sat Feb 2 at the Beat Kitchen, is the big release show for our newest record "Slayed". We're practically jumping out of our reptilian skins from excitement. We also are very lucky to be sharing our record release with amazing bands like Scale Model, Hidden Mitten and Das Kapital.

Blood, sweat, and some serious rock squats were done to prepare for this record and for this show, so thanks a million for all the kind words about the record and the release show from The Chicago Reader, The Onion, and Time Out Chicago!!!!!

Here's a little background on the record:
"Slayed" was born in a galaxy just down the street and a time as long ago as September of 07 at Volume Studios by the brilliant Sanford Parker. This was our first venture in the analog arena, and likely will never go back. You just can't beat that analog sound! Check out our new photos of the session posted in our photo album.

Chicago Reader
REPTOIDS
This local quartet has crafted a distinctive sound over just a few EPs thanks to singer-guitarist Karen Binor, who lends a postpunk edge to what would otherwise be just straight-ahead garage metal. The band plays tonight as part of a Chicago Indie Radio Project benefit, which is also a release party for the Reptoids and the Hidden Mitten. The Reptoids' latest, the three-track Slayed, goes from ferocious ("We Are the Wolves") to playful in an I-step-on-your-face kind of way ("Tramp Stamp"). The bill, from top to bottom: Das Kapital, the Reptoids, Scale Model, and the Hidden Mitten. Arrow9:30 PM, Beat Kitchen, 2100 W. Belmont, 773-281-4444 or 866-468-3401, $8, 18+. —Monica Kendrick

The Onion
"Chicago's Reptoids have long been playing straight-forward garage-punk heavy on attitude, courtesy of its female guitarist-vocalists. But for the quartet's newest, Slayed-released at this show-an unlikely pair of new influences has begun to sepp in: metal and a proclivity for catchy vocal melodies. For instance, "We Are The Wolves" kicks off with a tribal beat and growled vocals, but ends in an impressive crescendo of wiry guitar riffs. Local outfits Scale Model and Hidden Miten also release new records at this show, which benefits the Chicago Indie Radio Project, an organization that works to establish a local, independent community radio station. Headlining: Das Kapital.

Time Out Chicago
In addition to headliners Das Kapital, tonight's a triple record-release show for three fine local opening acts. Punky and spunky, the Reptoids growl in a way that recalls a darker L7 on their new album Slayed (RRRecords). Much more mellow is Scale Model, which makes indie pop that is delicately sewn together, with arpeggiated melodies that recall Sunny Day Real Estate paired with pretty female vocals. The group recorded its latest album down in Nashville with some session players. The Hidden Mitten goes the most straightforward route with hooky straight-up rock on the new Roma Roma. Tonight's also a WLUW/CHIRP benefit.

The story goes something like this.....

It happened 5 years ago in a mystical land of gobblins and faries (Neo) on the most holy and hallowed of nights (Halloween). All the young maidens of the land were bedazzled and primped in the most finest of wares (plastic sexy nurse, devil, cat and goth fairy dresses), and the handsome men were equally dapper (as the crow).

At some point in the evening, young Melissa spotted Dan in his well tailored suit (actually, it was his friend Jay's clothes, and he was dressed as "my friend Jay"....which remarkably enough, looked like Tron)

Some dancing and glasses of cheer were had, until sadly, the lights were on and the evening was coming to a close. The two leaned in closely and whispered sweet nothings to each others ears ("hey..you're cute" "yeah...you're hot"). Handsome Daniel, at a loss for pen and paper, recited his electronic mail address, which by some unknown drunken miracle, was remembered by our lovestruck Melissa.

Around the time of their meeting, Melissa was courting another. But she made many efforts to "set up" Dan with other friends and made up lame excuses to speak to him such as "oh I have this old photography equipment that I'm not using, would you like to come by...." or, "I have heavy furniture to move and alas, my fair arms cannot carry. Would you like to come by..." And so on. This innocent game of cat and mouse continued until one fateful day when Melissa was free to pursue her true love and called him on the phone with more than coy favors or friendly chit chat in mind.

It went something like this..

Dan: "hello?"
Melissa: "hi Dan, it's Melissa"
Dan: "I knew it was you, because my phone was vibrating and it made me think of you..he he".

And the rest is history. After many an evening of rock shows, sneaking wine into classic (and/or not so classy) films, drive in hot dogs, and roller coasters, they knew their love was special. They moved in together, with intentions of becoming wed "someday", but wasn't discussed much, because they we're just too busy rocking to worry about the future.

and both of them in Panther Style

Then on Oct 12, we had dinner at our neighborhood favorite, Bite (this part is so great, I have to switch to first person now :))) After dinner, Dan mentioned he had a small gift to say thanks for hanging out with him at the hospital last week (he had a small procedure done to give him vampire strength). I thought this was so so sweet and couldn't get over how lucky I was to have such a wonderful man in my life. I waited for him to return with a box of candy or a record

but, to my utter surprise he walks in with this..

He got down on his knee, and asked for me for my hand in marriage!!!

I was soooo surprised, but apparently, Dan had been planning this for quite a while with the help of Al from Panther Style to pick out the best sounding guitar I've ever played. Dan wanted some type of custom engraving on it, so our friend Dani from Comasoft thought something on the truss rod cover would be cool. Dan designed a ring and Dave from Scale Model Guitars did a kick ass job with the custom engagement ring inlay. (His band Scale Model is also super great).

I can't remember exactly what happened next, but I said yes!!! Everyone in the restaurant glanced over from time to time, confused about just we were smooching and crying about. The waiter came by and said "would you two like a picture with the....um..axe?"

Dan suggested we head over to the practice space to try out the new guitar, upon which I said "hell yeah!!". But as we got close to the door, I noticed the lock was undone. I figured since it was Thursday, Farewell Captain must be practicing. I slowly nudged the door open anyway,

and surprise!! most of our closest friends and even my parents were there.

There's also Dans' sweet description of the whole event plus more photos on the Panther Style blog

So thank you all who came to celebrate on our special night!!! I was truly surprised and will remember it forever!! I feel so lucky to have such wonderful friends and family. Because of you all, I honestly can't think of a time when I've been happier in my whole life.

love,
Melissa

Body: Danka, Grazie, Merci, Arigato Gozimasu, and muchas muchas Gracias para Jeanne McClure filling in for Chris'toid on bass for the Switchyard Festival yesterday.

She came in and learned our whole set in a matter of 3 practices and came out playing every song like she'd known it for years and looked smokin' hot on top of it. Amazing. We love you Jeanne! Make sure to check her out in Panther Style because if you can believe it, she's even better.

Also thanks to all of you that came out to the fest yesterday. We were a bit nervous, as Reptoids generally are creatures of the night, so the outside environment was a bit harsh for our 'toid skin. It was great having you all there (and don't think we didn't notice you dancing, you saucy tarts!). We love you guys too.

Mwha!
