Gold & platinum: Farenheit 'takes the plunge' in Negril
By Michael A Edwards

The setting sun and rising moon sought to outdo each other in painting a pathway across the Caribbean Sea, with the clouds and the stars as spectators. Yes, it was just that kind of evening at the Caves in Negril, as Mystic Urchin artiste Farenheit welcomed an international gathering of friends and well-wishers for the launch of his second album, Port Antonio Virgin.

Farenheit's latest album is Port Antonio Virgin.
After a suitably lengthy meet and mingle session, punctuated by some slammin' selections from guest DJ Dana, RE-TV presenter and -unbeknownst to this writer - pretty good vocalist, Empress got the proceedings underway as the band took the stand: Richard Folkes on keys, Andrew McIntyre and Rupert Bent Jr on guitar and bass, 'Q' on back-up vocal and the irrepressible Andrew 'Pregs' Thompson on drums did their warm-up.

The star entered the stage shortly thereafter and delved straightaway into the new material; in contrast to his previous album, Fringe To Fore, Port Antonio Virgin finds Farenheit taking aim at a decidedly more urban, incorporating more hip-hop and dancehall phrasings into the contemporary soul-roots and funk that attracted the attention of Billboard magazine about a decade ago.

"That was really what I was feeling at that time," he explained in a brief interview prior to the show. "With what I've been doing since, and the guys I've hung out with, like Kabir and Blaxx [two of the album's producers] and Sean Paul and others, this album, Port Antonio Virgin, is a reflection of that."

Tracks like the propulsive Hit Dem (with Sean) and the cleve appropriation of the '80s party staple Watching You by Slave (recast here as Watching Ladies), show the more street-sensitive artiste, but the new album is not without the sultry stuff that established him. Seven Days, which he also performed at Sunday's launch is a clever ditty about a man trying to (and claiming the feat) satisfy different lovers, while Empresario, with its spelt-out title hook, goes a contrasting route, declaring dedication to his 'empress'.

One highlight of the evening was when Farenheit called on Blaxx, who was wheeled on stage. Blaxx's sly wit and slightly menacing vocal were an instant hit, rendering the physical confines of his wheelchair irrelevant.

But the real highlight came via another track from Fringe To Fore, the Isley Bros cover, Atlantis. Here the band and vocalists were in perfect sync, a fact not lost on the swaying, singing crowd. One of the better covers of the last decade, the track as delivered, inside the Caves, was the perfect soundtrack to the aforementioned duel between sun and moon.

The singer was in a freestyling mood and there was more than one extended jam during the set, with both music and lyrics being improvised.

The set ended literally with a bang (more a thud) as drummer Thompson who had risen from his chair to strike the kit with even greater abandon, fell to the ground after one hectic crescendo. More amazingly, and to his credit, he rose in perfect time to strike the closing note.

Afterwards, the party atmosphere pervaded, and with other friends -including Sean Paul - passing through (no, he didn't perform), it was back to DJ Dana for more choice selections.

The artiste may be hoping for the gold and platinum that comes from the cash register - and indeed, there is clearly potential for that for this effort and it would be well deserved but, in any case, nature handed Farenheit a gift last Sunday, and he made excellent use of it, delivering a launch party that was short on ceremony and long on vibes and heart. He may style himself a Port Antonio Virgin, but its clear that Negril is the best place to 'lose it'.
