The new album, "Ain't What You Know," has five nominations in this year's Just Plain Folks Music Awards (called the "Grammys of the Independent Music World" by the L.A. Times). These were picked from a field of 42,000 albums and 560,000 songs! The awards show is in Nashville on August 29, I guess I better go! Here are the stats:

Best Male Singer/Songwriter Album: “Ain’t What You Know”....

Best Contemporary Song: “Saint Christopher”....

Best Cover Song: “Stay With Me”....

Best Male Singer/Songwriter Song: “Butterfly”....

Also, three other projects I was involved with have nominations as well:

Best Female Singer/Songwriter Album: Amy Engelhardt (from The Bobs) - "Ain't Gonna Be Pretty" (I co-produced, co-arranged, and played keyboards)

Best Holiday Song: Ali Handal - “Underneath the Mistletoe” (I produced, arranged and played piano)....

Best Vocal Jazz Song: Ellen Griffith - “New Orleans Callin” (I'm the singer and the piano player on that one)

The new album, "Ain't What You Know," is available online, and it's just beginning to show up in stores. I don't have the full report yet on what record stores are stocking, but I know I just saw it in the blues section at Amoeba Records here in Hollywood, CA, and in New Orleans at Louisiana Music Factory - so go git you one! It's available on CD and vinyl LP, unless you are getting it at iTunes, of course. I've included some handy-dandy links here for your convenience:

So there I was, thinking it wasn't going to happen, but then it happened. I ended up going to the South by Southwest Music Conference in Austin, TX. Frank Brandon from Burnside Distribution, the company that  has been distributing my CDs for the past five years, called and asked me to play the showcase they put on at Threadgill's - someone had to drop out unexpectedly and I could have their slot if I wanted it.

This is one of those festivals that everyone wants to play, and I was no exception. The only question was: could I pull it all together with just a week notice? I needed a plane ticket, a band, a keyboard, and a place to stay. Money was tight, and I would need to depend on the kindness of friends and strangers alike. Not to mention the fickle airfare gods. First off, I found a plane ticket I could afford, provided I didn't mind some strange routing that had me flying out of L.A. but flying back into Orange County, 60 miles from home. Karen (Nash, my wife) decided she wasn't gonna miss out on a trip to the land of her birth, and found her own inexpensive but strangely-routed plane ticket two days later. Then our bass player Lynn Keller found me an amazing rhythm section - Scott Laningham and John Fremgen - guys she knew from her days playing the Austin scene. Greg McLaughlin, a fan and friend in Austin, persuaded a wonderful dude named Chip Dolan to loan me his keyboard (Greg also supplied me with a couple of very delicious Graycliff cigars). And my longtime friend, sometime booking-agent, and erstwhile background singer Temple Ray, housed us, fed us, and sang background vocals with Karen. The first time I actually heard this hastily assembled ensemble was onstage, after counting off the first song. They all nailed it. Then we ate barbecue. It was a glorious day in the life.

Hey kids - just wanted to get you hip to my latest activity on the internets. bobmalone.com has been completely redone (all new for 2009!) and it's pretty cool. Tons of new photos and tunes and videos. You must go. And while you're at it, visit me at my facebook page, because I know what you're thinking: MySpace is sooooooo 2008!

And of course there's also iMeem and iLike and, well...you get the idea. At all of these sites, you can hear all the songs from the new album. And buy a copy while you're at it.

Ok, I'm done. Malone out.

Yes Virginia, There is a Santa Claus

We all know the quote, but the eloquent letter it comes from is something we all need to see at this time of year! Eight-year-old Virginia O'Hanlon wrote a letter to the editor of New York's Sun in 1897, this response, the work of veteran newsman Francis Pharcellus Church, has since become history's most reprinted newspaper editorial.

After five weeks in Australia, my own country seems a little alien to me. Or at least L.A. does. but then again L.A. is always a little alien. Or maybe it's just reality crashing down around me after five weeks of having no responsibilities other than traveling and playing music. In fact, just a day after arriving home I found myself on my knees in the bathroom doing battle with a hopelessly clogged toilet bowl, and as the incomprehensibly foul stench wafted past me, I thought to myself: "was I really complaining just a week ago about having too many press interviews to do?" How quickly we lose perspective. And when I say "we," of course, I mean "I." The royal we, as it were. Sometimes I think "lack of perspective" is the phrase that best sums up my entire worldview. I play the piano for a living, after all.

The new CD is almost done. I really mean it this time - we're closing in on the last of the mixes, and work has begun on the artwork. In the meantime, you can watch the video for "No One Can Hurt You" which will be the first single. Copies of the video single will be available for the low low price of free at all upcoming shows. Other than that, I won't jinx it by saying any more.

the first two weeks of October I'll be touring the Northeast, mostly opening for legendary blues chanteuse Maria Muldaur, but also headlining Rodeo Bar in NYC on October 10, doing my longest NYC show EVER! Two one-hour-long sets, with band. And on a Friday night, even. Showtime is at 10:00, so all my New Jersey brethren, you have an excellent excuse for an excursion into the City. I hope to see you all out in force, this will be my last NY/NJ show of the year - make your reservations now!

Here in L.A., I was booked to open for Ian McLagen at The Mint this month and Billy Vera at Canyon Club next month. Both headliners have cancelled their shows, so you can cross those off your calendar,. Sorry about that - we are in the process of booking more local gigs...I'll keep you posted.

Greetings from me and my colony of influenza germs. I am sitting here waiting patiently for the cold-medicine to kick in and trying desperately to think of a witty comment that will hold your attention in this information-saturated world. Nothing is coming to mind. Probably my best bet would be to try again once I've reached that peak of delirium one reaches right before the Ny-Quil puts one down for the count. But my better impulses warn against it. Oh well, I'll just have to go directly to the crass commercial pitch, in which I attempt to entice you, my most kindest of fans, to attend my upcoming performances so I can continue on through life with my livelihood intact. So here goes: In just a week and a half, I head to the Southeast to play the Evening Muse in Charlotte, NC, The Swallow at the Hollow in Roswell, GA (on the outer edges of that Atlanta sprawl), and The Garage in Winston-Salem, NC. All very cool places to go. Swallow at the Hollow is a Nashville-style in-the-round type of thing, and I will be in said round for two nights with two really great singer/songwriters. My good friend Kristy Jackson (who wrote Reba McEntire's monster hit "Take It Back," among other things), and the lovely and talented Lauren Lucas. Should be quite a weekend. In Charlotte I do a full headlining set after the Tosco House Party open mic. And in Winston, I do another full set as part of the "American Music Showcase" series they do there.  Later in March, I return to Seattle for shows at the always wonderfully bizarre Moisture Festival, as well as Portland, OR and Seattle shows with The Bobs at various venues. Then I'm back in L.A. for out next big gig at The Mint on April 3. Karen Nash opens the show and we will do a nice long set shortly after. It's all listed below. I do believe that by the next time I see you, these germs will have vacated the desecrated temple that is my body ...I look forward to it!

Love, Bob
