Category: Travel and Places
We departed snowy Oxford very early last Thursday morning with an instrument or two each and some toothpaste, for Heathrow. Our first visit abroad as a band was an extremely exciting prospect but somewhat daunting to know that we were going to introduce Holland to our music and didn't have the faintest idea of what response to expect. We were off to Groningen, north of Amsterdam, to play at Eurosonic Festival.

After a surprisingly rapid flight we soon found ourselves standing at baggage collection watching our bags and instruments (including a fragile harmonium) come flying out onto the conveyer belt with an almighty smash.

Two and a half hours, an unbelievably pissed and sociable Dutchman and one sleep later we arrived in Groningen where we were welcomed by two very good friends, one of which had kindly organised a place for us to stay. We trekked through the beautiful town which was freezing and snow-covered and arrived at the flat to drop our things before a huge meal.

Friday was a packed one with interviews and performances from 11am through to the main one in the evening. From a tenth floor hotel room (http://3voor12.vpro.nl/tv/#/..41103294/42983856/10) to a tiny record store stage it was all really fast paced and we hardly had a chance to be tourists at all, but that was all yet to come on Saturday. The evening gig was great, personally I felt quite at home, the venue was not unlike the Jericho Tavern in terms of size and atmosphere but it was hard to not think about the completely new crowd and how they were feeling about it all!

That night was a big chill out. After revisiting the flat for a while for some Vla...we ventured out to the venues to check out the other artists playing. Needless to say we found some pretty amazing stuff. For me the best had to be a German group whose name unfortunately I never found out but their mix of Funk, Dance and Soul combined with an awesome on stage presence was pretty unbelievable.

The weekend overall was a great experience for us and a successful first step into Europe.

In other news, we are very very close to finishing up the tracks for the album. Currently mixing the last couple so it's definitely on its way, yay!

Tickets for the February tour are going fast so after you've read this, why not buy a few eh?

Tomorrow we head to Glasgow for a gig which we are very much looking forward to indeed!

That's all from me for now really, hope you are all well and really do hope to see you soon!

Happy new year all!

We've just spent four days in the studio recording a message in morse code on the Guiro, singing drunkenly, warping sampled vocals, checking through guitar parts, choosing our favourite takes, and generally edging closer to a finished debut album!  We were in the bunker until 5pm on NewYear's Eve and it felt good to get all the recording done in time to celebrate the end of a very successful year for us. Hopefully it's just a bit of mixing to do now, and then the fun process of choosing which tracks to include and in what order...

Or in the words of Ollie:

While recording a song in Morse code
We peroused a book called On The Road.
Eating many a toasted
Cheese sandwich, and hosted
By Jon in his Balham abode.

Now three tracks have been done and completed,
For our very first disc - you'll be treated
To a wond'rous record.
We know you won't be bored,
But will play it on loop, and repeat it!

Hasta pronto amigos!

Special Christmas greetings!

We have just returned from Maida Vale where we took part in Rob Da Bank's Radio 1 Christmas Campfire which got us in the seasonal spirit. Rob did the whole show wearing a cheshire cat suit (obviously), and we were surrounded by jesuses, aliens, santas and other freakish beings. Amazing. Fellow guests included Florence and the Machine, the legendary Billy Bragg, the Helium Choir and the Masters of the Kazooniverse! We played 'Fuel Up' and pulled a cracker with Billy (4 vs.1). You can listen to the show on bbc iplayer here:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/..episode/b00p91th/Rob_da_Bank_..Robs_Christmas_Campfire_..Special/

As we are fast approaching the end of 2009, and the snow is on the ground, it feels like it's time to turn on the radiator and reminisce. It's been an incredible year and we've done a lot of things we really never could have predicted. For us some of the highlights must include performing on the Acoustic stage (and a winnebago roof) at Glastonbury festival in the summer, quaking in our boots on "Later...with Jools Holland" next to Jay-Z and the Foo Fighters last month, playing at the Sheldonian with the Oxford Millennium Orchestra, and going on our first proper UK tour courtesy of Van Blanc. Thanks to anyone that came along to see us.

As a special christmas gift, we are giving you a free mp3 of "We are the Battery Human" recorded at the Sheldonian in October. To get the link, sign up to the mailing list - you can find the form on the main page.

Here's to 2010!

Current mood:  froggy

I don't like to think about climate change and I'm sure most people are the same.  When I was 10 years old I first learnt about it at school and I had terrible nightmares about drowning in the rising seas.  I still get properly scared when I think about the implications of climate change for people around the world. We are crammed onto a planet which quite simply cannot support our current lifestyles - people have calculated that we would need 3 Planet Earth's to support our current rate of consumption.  The effects of climate change are going to result in even less resources to go round, and more fighting over who gets what.  People need to accept that we've had it too easy, and that we need to start making significant lifestyle changes.

The good news is that reducing our carbon emissions needn't result in any loss of quality of life or happiness.  In fact many studies show that a less polluting lifestyle, for example through eating less meat and cycling to work, can actually make us feel happier, as well as saving money.  It might even help to save the rapidly fading concept of 'community'. I personally believe that a sense of community will be vital to the process of cutting back, since at all levels (from the White House to your house) it requires EVERYONE to do their bit - it only takes one selfish thinker to drag everyone else down.

And while I'm on that point, there is nothing that riles me more than climate change deniers.  What an uncaring, greedy standpoint to take.  The facts are clear.  If we don't act now this world is going to become a very ugly place within a short space of time, and our children will never forgive us.  I don't think it would be an exaggeration to say that the future quality of billions of lives is at stake in Copenhagen.

...

Now, on a brighter note, Stornoway have made it on to the longlist of the BBC's Sound of 2010 predictions! Check it out here:  http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/8395789.stm

Bye for now,

Hi there!
In recent news; we were very happy to play at Jo Whiley's Little Noise session alongside Newton Faulkner and others in the beautiful Union Chapel. After arriving typically late and therefore having an extremely rushed and stressful sound check we were first on. An unexpected solo from Rob in We Are The Battery Human and an eclectic use of instruments by Jon made the set very enjoyable for us all and the partying lasted late into the night!
We are currently recording the album in a secret ditch in London, working through tracks old and new, so a lot to look forward to for the release early next year!
Coldharbour Road was listed as our local music magazine Nightshift's top song of the year which was great to see.
Some of you may have caught the next item on Scott Mills' show early last week. Huw Stevens chose Zorbing as the record he played on a bicycle powered record player. As would be expected, the changing speed of the pedaling resulted in a mix of chipmunk Zorbing and Barry White Zorbing. Better than the original?
Coming up there are two shows to mention. This Thursday (the 3rd) we are playing at UniTruck in High Wycombe, which we're looking forward to very much. Also playing are Pulled Apart By Horses and Dusty and The Dreaming Spires to name a few. There will be animals and bunting, all together costing just a fiver. The second show will be held in Gloucester city centre where the amazing Spiegeltent will be and we get to headline it on the 16th! It will be like a winter festival and we hope to see you there!
Anyways, a lot of news, lots of crisps and pies to eat, must go. However, hope to see you all soon!

Yesterday was the most surreal day of my life. Sandwiched between Jay-Z and the Foo Fighters in the BBC Studios, and feeling properly sick with nerves, we played 'Zorbing' and 'Fuel up' and somehow just held it together. What a relief when it was over! And what a way for Ollie to spend his birthday!

You can watch yesterday's live recording of the Stornorabbits-in-headlights on iPlayer, or tune in to BBC2 on Friday evening for the hour-long version.  Its good be back to reality today......did yesterday really just happen?

Hello there!

Finally we are all back in one country. Brian has returned from the West, and I, the East. And plunged straight back into music we were. With only an hour between returning home and getting on the road headed for Middlesboro, it's no wonder life has turned into a swirling blur of builders breakfasts and social clubs.

That said, the tour was an awesome experience for all. Van Blanc held out very well and we all enjoyed ourselves. Our first stop was the Westgarth Social Club in Middlesboro, which treated us very well. The highlight of the evening was of course the raffle. We were extremely grateful for a warm bed that night at Andy F's parents house accompanied by confusing crosswords and copious amounts of wine.

Next stop, Sheffield! Personally, the best city on the tour. Playing the Plug (the O2's identical twin) was a somewhat sobering experience, with the crowd being made up mostly of drunk Oxfordians. But still, drunk hide and seek in a graveyard and a good dose of the Talking Heads is more than enough to make that night an unforgettable one. Many thanks once again must go to the parents of Ella whose magnificent house was the next place of rest.

Headed slightly south, we reached Leeds and the Brudenell Social Club. The support groups there were stunning and the crowd was attentive. After our builders breakfast the next morning we came back to Oxford all tired and needing a shower. Can't wait for the next leg!

In other news. We are all extremely excited after recent developments that have led to us being invited to play on the Later show with Jools Holland in a few weeks! Our recent Maida Vale session is now available to watch here.

And for those of you who havent yet grabbed your Sheldonian ticket for the 30th, they are going fast so get em while their hot.

A last point now and I promise Ill leave you alone. You may have noticed that we have put some new songs up here on this MySpace, one of which is a demo of a reasonably new song The Coldharbour Road. We hope you like them!!!

Anyways

You may have noticed that today is 28th September. That means we can officially announce the release of our single 'Unfaithful'! You can now download it from iTunes, 7Digital, Play.com and Amazon, but if you prefer those wax disc things, a limited edition 7” is available from independent record stores (Rough Trade and hopefully your nearest independent dealer). The song was produced by Craig Silvey (who’s worked with the likes of Portishead and the Coral) and features violinist Rahul Satija. The B-side is ‘You Don’t Know Anything’. As with the previous single, Matt Halliday has produced some stunning artwork for the sleeve (which makes the physical copies worth going for!), and, as you will see below, there’s also an accompanying video on YouTube (created by Ollie Steadman and Gina Hood). The song has already been given 4/5 stars from The Mirror!

In other news, you might have spotted that we have had a couple of reviews of last week’s single launch gig at the ICA from Michael Hann in the Guardian and Lisa Verrico in The Times…Thank you to everyone who made it such a special one.

Last but not least, we are very excited about our gig at the Sheldonian Theatre in Oxford on 30th October (the penultimate date in next month’s tour), where we will be collaborating with the magnificent Oxford Millennium Orchestra! Tickets for this are now available to buy at WeGotTickets at the following location: http://www.wegottickets.com/event/60317

see you soon!

So, my second blog!

Indeed there have been lots of goings on recently. Some of you may remember a mention of our trip down to Dorset to go Zorbing but where is the evidence? Well you can have a look right here and see why everyone in their right mind should do it.

Another piece of cool news is to mention that we have our first ever remix! You can check out the Here Comes The Blackout rejig on the MySpace page.

In previous blogs the others mention the ICA (Institute of Contemporary Arts) which we will be playing on Monday 21st. This is gonna be an awesome setting made all the more incredible by the presence of Dr Krishna Rhagavenga, an expert veena player who will join us for one or two numbers and visa versa! Unfortunately for some all the tickets have disappeared into thin air and the entire thing is sold out . However! For those of you who wont be able to make it, you are allocated a second chance! October 30th is one we are all shaking at the thought of. For we shall be attempting to fill at least a few seats at Oxford's mammoth Sheldonian Theatre! After some negotiations and many discussions with some hardcore Classicalists, we have been granted the enormous privilege of playing there. A more in depth and interesting description is this:

"Stornoway will be playing in Oxford's foremost concert hall, the Sheldonian Theatre, Christopher Wrens first design. Stornoway have been putting on unusual nights of unusual music in unusual venues in their home town since January 2008. Playing the prestigious 800 capacity venue will be the bands biggest show to date. Support on the night will be from the Oxford Millennium Orchestra (OMO) who will also join the band for their set."

But as is the case with most exciting news, there is a sadness that lurks in all our hearts, and that is the end of the festival season. We had a wonderful time as you may know at the various festivals we went to. Highlights personally for me were Glastonbury (obbers), Greenman, Truck and Radio One's Big Weekend. In other words:

"Earlier this year they released their first official single; the critically acclaimed ʻZorbing'. They were booked to play an unprecedented 4 stages at Glastonbury Festival 09. Radio 1 asked them to headline their ʻIntroducing Stage' at their Big Weekend and they are one of only a few bands that both R1 and 6 Music have agreed to collaborate on, granting Stornoway a shared broadcast session from the BBC's prestigious Maida Vale studios (this session is due for airing on Huw Stephens' and Tom Robinson's shows in October)."

Once again, you may have read our weekly articles in the Telegraph, which updated our progress through the festival season and described the various hilarious moments, and actually got us a free van! The last of these articles can be read here, where you can also read the rest if you haven't already.

It was only yesterday we had another great outing to the Big Smoke, Charing Cross/Leicester Square to be precise. Here we were booked into the amazing XFM studios in which only a couple of weeks before Just Jack had recorded a live session! Well, that was great. I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that it was the fastest recording we have ever done! In only a bit over two hours we had 4 tracks done (most of this miracle having been down to an absolutely incredible engineer who had an awesome talent when it came to mixing desks and microphones). The session will be broadcast on September 24th on John Kennedy's show.

The trip wouldn't have been a proper Stornoway outing if what happened next hadn't happened. With the new van carrying a large number of instruments and people, we had to find parking and where better to do it than in a maze of an underground car park, drenched in rain, in the centre of China Town! Anyway, we ignored the height restrictions and entered being far too optimistic for our own good! Half way down a spiral slope we nearly embedded the vehicle in a concrete roof and so began to reverse back up the weirdest slope on earth! Probably the worst part of it all was the presence of a very expensive car behind us, whose owner admitted that he did not know how to reverse. Obviously, not wanting that sort of responsibility none of us offered to reverse it for him. So after about half an hour of creaking axles and burning hand brakes, we got out, turned around and sped off before we could be beaten up by the car park attendants!

I suppose I should finish up now so just a few more things to mention.

Our second single "Unfaithful" will be officially released on the 28th of September and will sort of mark the beginning of our first UK tour! The dates for which can be found on the myspace and down below.

We say chow4now to Bri who heads off to America with brother Adam for a little bit. But as for the rest of us we have some preparations to be doing for when we get on the road!

Nice speakin' te y'all!

Rob
