Rock-A-Bye Your Baby (With A Dixie Melody) - Sam Harris sings Al Jolson ...COMMENT TO SAM FOR THIS VIDEO HERE: http://bit.ly/Rock-A-Byehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=POzZvXaXHQYDownload Sam at ► http://SamTunes.NETRock-A-Bye Your Baby (With A Dixie Melody) - Sam Harris sings Al Jolson See another clip from this concert "Swanee (How I Love Ya)" found at ► http://SamTube.com"Rock-a-Bye Your Baby with a Dixie Melody" is a popular song written by Jean Schwartz, with lyrics by Sam M. Lewis and Joe Young. The song was published in 1918. Probably the best-known recordings of the song were by Al Jolson (who introduced it) and Judy Garland. It was also a hit for Jerry Lewis in the 1950s. Aretha Franklin also recorded a lesser-known version of this song, which reached #37 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. In the 1950s, it was issued on the Peter Pan Records label, aimed at children, on a 45 RPM record as the flip side of "When the Red Red Robin Comes Bob Bob Bobbin' Along". The song lends itself to easy adaptation. Harvey Fierstein sang it to Katie Couric during her last day hosting the Today show: "Rock-a-bye your rock-a-bye Katie with a goodbye melody". Also Cher recorded the song for her album Bittersweet White Light (1973). Lyrics: Rock-a-bye your baby with a Dixie melody. When you croon, croon a tune From the heart of Dixie. Hang that cradle mammy mine Right on that Mason-Dixon line And swing it from Virginia To Tennessee with all the soul that's in ya. Weap no more my lady. Mammy sing it again for me. And old black Joe Just as though You had me on your knee. A million baby kisses I'll deliver If you will only sing the Swanee River. Rock-a-bye your rock-a-bye baby with a Dixie melody. Rock-a-bye, Hush-a-bye With a Dixie melody. When you croon, croon a tune from the heart of Dixie Hang that cradle mammy mine Right on that Mason-Dixon line And swing it from Virginia To Tennessee with all the soul that's in ya. Mammy, mammy listen to what they're playing. They're playing Weap No More My Lady. Sing it for me. And old black Joe Just as though You had me on your knee. A thousand baby kisses I'll deliver If you will only sing that Swanee River. Rock-a-bye your rock-a-bye baby with a Dixie melody! According to Esquire magazine, "J. J. Shubert, impressed by Jolsons overpowering display of energy, booked him for La Belle Paree, a musical comedy which opened at the Winter Garden in 1911. Within a month Jolson was a star. From then until 1926, when he retired from the stage, he could boast an unbroken series of smash hits." On March 20, 1911, Jolson starred in his first play at the Winter Garden Theater in New York City, La Belle Paree, which also greatly helped launch his career as a singer. The opening night drew a huge crowd to the theater, and that evening Jolson gained audience popularity by singing old Stephen Foster songs in blackface. In the wake of that phenomenal opening night, Jolson was given a position in the show's cast. The show closed after 104 performances, and during its run Jolson's popularity grew greatly. Following La Belle Paree, Jolson accepted an offer to perform in the play Vera Violetta. The show opened on November 20, 1911, and, like La Belle Paree, was a phenomenal success. In the show, Jolson again portrayed the role of a blackface singer, and managed to become so popular, that his weekly salary- which he earned from his success in La Belle Paree- of $500 was increased to $750.[5]:98-117 After Vera Violetta ran its course, Jolson starred in The Whirl of Society, and through this play, his career on Broadway would rise to new heights. During his time at the Winter Garden, Jolson would tell the audience "you ain't heard nothing yet" before performing additional songs. In the play, Jolson debuted his signature blackface character, "Gus." The play was so successful, that Winter Garden owner Lee Shubert agreed to sign Jolson to a seven year contract with a salary of $1,000 a week. Jolson would reprise his role as "Gus" in future plays and by 1914, Jolson achieved so much popularity with the theater audience that his $1,000 a week salary was doubled to $2,000 a week. In 1916, Robinson Crusoe, Jr. was the first play where he was featured as the star character. In 1918, Jolson's acting career would be pushed even further, after he starred in the hit play Sinbad. It became the most successful Broadway play of 1918 and 1919. A new song was later added to the show that would become composer George Gershwin's first hit recording, "Swanee". Jolson also added another song to the show, "My Mammy". By 1920, Jolson had become the biggest star on Broadway. Al Jolson (May 26, 1886 October 23, 1950) was an American singer, comedian, and actor. According to PBS, he is considered the "first openly Jewish man to become an entertainment star in America". His career lasted from 1911 until his death in 1950, during which time he was commonly dubbed "the world's greatest entertainer. His performing style was brash and extroverted, and he popularized a large number of songs that benefited from his "shamelessly sentimental, melodramatic approach". Numerous well-known singers were influenced by his music, including Bing Crosby, Judy Garland, and Bob Dylan, who once referred to him as "somebody whose life I can feel". In the 1930s he was America's most famous and highest paid entertainer. Between 1911 and 1928, Jolson had nine sell-out Winter Garden shows in a row, more than 80 hit records, and 16 national and international tours. Yet he's best remembered today for his leading role in the first (full length) talking movie ever made, The Jazz Singer, released in 1927. He starred in a series of successful musical films throughout the 1930s. After a period of inactivity, his stardom returned with the 1946 Oscar-winning biographical film, The Jolson Story. Larry Parks played Jolson with the songs dubbed in with Jolsons real voice. A sequel, Jolson Sings Again, was released in 1949, and was nominated for three Oscars. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Jolson became the first star to entertain troops overseas during World War II, and again in 1950 became the first star to perform for GIs in Korea, doing 42 shows in 16 days. According to the St. James Encyclopedia of Popular Culture, "Jolson was to jazz, blues, and ragtime what Elvis Presley was to rock 'n' roll". Being the first popular singer to make a spectacular "event" out of singing a song, he became a rock star before the dawn of rock music. His specialty was building stage runways extending out into the audience. He would run up and down the runway and across the stage, "teasing, cajoling, and thrilling the audience", often stopping to sing to individual members, all the while the "perspiration would be pouring from his face, and the entire audience would get caught up in the ecstasy of his performance". He enjoyed performing in blackface makeup a theatrical convention in the early 20th century. With his unique and dynamic style of singing black music, like jazz and blues, he was later credited with single-handedly introducing African-American music to white audiences. As early as 1911 he became known for fighting against anti-black discrimination on Broadway. Jolson's well-known theatrics and his promotion of equality on Broadway helped pave the way for many black performers, playwrights, and songwriters, including Cab Calloway, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Fats Waller, and Ethel Waters. Sam Harris: a soul singer
By JAMES D. WATTS JR. World Scene Writer
Published: 11/2/2009 2:21 AM
Last Modified: 11/2/2009 9:46 AM
Sam
Harris has sung a lot of different types of music over the years — from
pop standards to Broadway tunes, from original songs to contemporary
hits. But no matter the type of song he performs, Sam Harris is first
and foremost a soul singer.
That's not because he's done a couple of albums for Motown in his
career. It's about the way Harris approaches each song he performs,
vocally and emotionally full-out so that you believe every word, every
note that comes out of his mouth is deeply, profoundly personal — that
every song is at once a communication and a kind of exorcism.
At least, that's how it seemed Friday at the VanTrease
Performing Arts Center for Education as Harris performed the first of
two concerts with the Signature Symphony at Tulsa Community College.
We've seen Harris in concert several times — with orchestras,
and accompanied only by his pianist and musical collaborator Todd
Schroeder — and at those concerts we've heard him perform a lot of the
songs that he sang Friday night. And every one of those songs, no
matter how familiar to either performer or listener, Harris sang as if
it were absolutely vital for him to share that melody and those words
with the near-capacity crowd at Friday's show.
He joked about his propensity for sad songs after a hushed and
heartbreaking rendition of Bonnie Raitt's "I Can't Make You Love Me,"
delicately accompanied by pianist Amy Cottingham and cellist Monty
Lawson.
"I don't know why I'm drawn to songs like that —
unrequited love, sorrow, torture, misery," he said. "You look at the
songs I've done, and it's like one long suicide note — even the uptempo
numbers are tragedy with a beat."
Some might think Harris was protesting a bit too much, but
there's as much truth and humor in that statement. His opening number
was the Al Jolson song, "Let Me Sing and I'm Happy," which on the
surface was bright and happy-sounding,
we're-gonna-have-a-good-time-tonight kind of number.
But if you know anything about Jolson himself — and Harris has been
working for years to help bring a musical about Jolson's life to
Broadway — that title has a slight tinge of desperation to it. And
although Harris' performance of the song didn't play up that quality,
you could easily imagine a slightly different arrangement bringing out
Jolson's rapacious need to perform and be applauded.
Harris performed two other Jolson songs during the evening:
"Swanee" and "Rockabye Your Baby with a Dixie Melody," both arranged by
Dan Wooten of Tulsa. Wooten, who directs the music for a local church,
did a superb job with these songs, creating some richly colored
orchestrations that sounded as good as those of the legendary Peter
Matz, who did most of the arrangements of the songs Harris performed.
Matz is known for creating big, bold and brassy settings to
give performers such as Streisand an appropriate background against
which to wail to the heavens. But Harris showed Matz's quieter side, in
a version of "A Cockeyed Optimist" from "South Pacific" that slowed
this usually perky song into a tender, wistful ballad.
Harris offered some of Broadway's golden age with songs by
Harold Arlen, linking "I've a Right to Sing the Blues" and "Stormy
Weather," then melding Cy Coleman's "There's Got to Be Something Better
than This" with Stephen Sondheim's "Move On."
And to close, he sang what have become signature songs, a
gospel-powered "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and "Somewhere Over the
Rainbow."
The Signature Symphony under the direction of Barry Epperley
sounded great behind Harris, the sound sharply focused, the interaction
between singer and musicians perfectly in sync.
In addition to Cottingham and Lawson, a few other musicians
got a chance in the spotlight, as trumpeter Stephen Goforth,
saxophonist Gary Linde and Rich Fisher on trombone took solos during
"The Lady Is a Tramp."
The first half of the evening was more hit and miss. The
performance of Saint-Saens' "Danse Macabre" was very good, with some
excellent solo work by concertmaster Maureen O'Boyle, and the Signature
Chorale's medley of Halloween-friendly songs was delightfully daffy —
especially the wonky efforts to mimic the dance moves of Michael
Jackson's "Thriller."
To give Harris more time to perform, Epperley dropped the planned "Night on Bald Mountain" by Mussorgsky.
It might have been better, though, to have dispensed with the
Stokowski arrangement of Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, which had
a few good moments from the woodwinds and violins, but ultimately
sounded as if it were one rehearsal shy of coming together.

Here you find behind the scenes footage from rehearsal and performance of the Eric Clapton song "Change The World". Hosted by the Family Equality Council who fight for civil rights of gay families. The Council present the Leffew Family their Equality Circle Award. You can get to know them on their own YouTube channel at: http://youtube.com/depfoxText from their blog and web site at http://gay-family-values.com "We are: Jay, Bryan, Daniel, and Selena, known on youtube as the Depfox family. When Prop 8 was approved in California on November 4'th, 2008, we were a private family living in Northern California. Like many other gay families, we were angered and saddened by its passage but, had nowhere to go to express that anger or to talk with others who understood what it means to have your rights stripped away in such a manner. We did a search for "gay families" on the internet and found nothing reflecting what our lives really looked like. Thus we put our first video onto Youtube. Just a simple video of our family sitting around the dinner table talking to Youtube listeners about Prop 8. That video did better than we could have ever expected and we saw a need to show people what a gay family really looked like. We wanted to put a face on the fight for marriage equality and to break some stereotypes about GLBT families. The purpose of this sight is to support the GLBT community in a variety of ways: First, to continue to show the world what a gay family looks like in a raw and unvarnished way. This has always been the aim of all our Youtube videos. This site will serve as an archive and alterative source to view those videos. We also wish to provide news on the fight for marriage equality from all over the nation. Secondly, we wish To show young GLBT people that they too can have the lives they want but have been told they cannot have. We have recieved countless Emails from young GLBT people stating that they didn't believe that they would ever be able to meet someone fall in love, and have a family. Our answer to everyone who feels this way is,..."Yes you can!" We are glad that our videos provide hope and show that building a family is possible. Jay and I felt the same way as many of you did When we first came out, but we did it and so can you. We have been asked often "how we adopted" and in this site we hope to give the GLBT community, resources and support to begin their own family building journey." -- The Leffew Family *** About The Family Equality Council ... In 1979 a group of gay fathers got together and formed the group that would eventually become Family Equality Council. Knowing that there were other gay dads out there somewhere, they were committed to finding one another and forming a network of support. Originally called the Gay Fathers Coalition, in 1986 this fathers group expanded to include lesbian moms, prompting a name change to the Gay and Lesbian Parents Coalition International (GLPCI), a volunteer grassroots chapter-based organization whose primary purpose was to connect with and support local gay and lesbian parenting groups, while advancing the cause of the lesbian and gay parenting community. Children of LGBTQ parents have unique needs and learn, grow and find support with one another. In 1990, a group of youth convened and initiated a new program of GLPCI, called Just For Us. By the mid 1990s that group had established a steering committee and separate program status, and shortly thereafter the group changed its name to Children of Lesbians and Gays Everywhere (COLAGE). In 1999, the GLPCI Board of Directors endorsed the wishes of COLAGE to become an independent organization, operating under its own tax-exempt status. COLAGE became an independent organization on January 1, 1999. In 1998, recognizing our growing movement and the need to lead by being inclusive examples, GLPCI changed its name to the Family Pride Coalition in order to include bisexual and transgender parents. In 2007, in order to better capture the full breadth and scope of our work and our collective vision of a world that treats all loving families equally, we thought it was important to change our name to Family Equality Council. Our new name and expanded vision reinforce our commitment to working across communities and issues and to joining forces with other progressive advocacy groups to create meaningful change for all loving families. The organization focuses on generating resources and coordinating activities to create awareness of and combat against HIV/AID. The DIVA Foundation utilizes music and entertainment as a vehicle to inform, educate and erase the stigma attached to this deadly disease.
For the past 19 years Sheryl Lee Ralph's DIVA Foundation has presented, with sponsorship from caring companies, DIVAS SIMPLY SINGING! - a magical evening of song and entertainment created to assist Los Angeles AIDS organizations efforts to raise funds and awareness, allowing them to continue to help and support those in need. The Diva Foundation has acted locally but is widening its sphere of influence to include more HIV/AIDS organizations around the country and globe.
Part of the Sheryl Lee Ralph's Home Fragrance Collection, uniquely scented, elegant candles; provide another way for others to help light the light of compassion as we fight the good fight against HIV/AIDS. Partial proceeds from the sale of these candles support the DIVA FOUNDATION and are tax-deductible.
Our awareness campaign has grown to include: "Sometimes I Cry" a one woman-show written and performed by Sheryl Lee Ralph, town hall meetings, prevention seminars, free HIV testing, HIV/AIDS counseling, and free healthcare materials. A sponsored luncheon, where gloves must be worn to drive home the slogan: "No glove, No love!!", and hosted by Sheryl Lee Ralph, community leaders and health experts, provides a non-threatening, intimate atmosphere where guests can get much needed information, address critical issues, ask questions and be assured of an educated and informed answer. Ms. Ralph has recorded a series of HIV awareness PSAs for grass roots organizations in need of assistance.

"DIVA is an equal opportunity word. Men can strut DIVA divinely, inspire victoriously anointed. Strut DIVA because we are much more than a word, we're a movement"! -- Sheryl Lee Ralph
http://DivasSimplySinging.com
Sam takes you to his rehearsal day for his upcoming performance for the star-studded benefit of "DIvas Simply Singing".
We get a taste of what goes on behind the scenes, and the perks of being a Diva. One of those perks is the outstanding gift bag... but what will Sam be doing with the fabulous makeup, accessories, dresses and those mile high heel pumps?! That might be another vlog.
Sam finds he is actually not the only male singer after all as he catches the Grammy Award-winning male R&B group "All-4-One" rehearsing their big hit "I Swear". The concert will feature Sheryl Lee Ralph, Loretta Devine, Yolanda Adams, Brenda Russell, Jenifer Lewis, Barbara Morrison, Frenchie Davis, N'dambi, Yo Yo, Niecy Nash and Sam among others.
We meet the Supreme Diva herself, Sheryl Lee Ralph who greets Sam with her fabulousity and divine words of wisdom.
The show is tonight, Saturday October 10th. The 19th annual Divas Simply Singing! concert will be held at 7:30pm at the Saban Theatre (formerly Wilshire Theatre) in Beverly Hills. The evening proceeds will benefit the Women Alive Coalition and the AIDS Healthcare Foundation.
Even if you cannot attend, Sam encourages you to make a donation of any amount, which you may do at:
