hey folks! for those of you that have turned up at our recent shows, thanks; but, since i doubt anyone reading this was there, you missed a couple of really good shows. the show at cafe acoustic this past saturday was one of our best yet. we were really surprised to walk into the place and see that it was close to being packed. by the time we went on, it was full. the atmosphere was also great. we had a few issues with feedback durning the set, and at very inopportune moments, but all-in-all, it went nicely. i don’t think we’ll end up putting any of it up on the net, but you never know.
we also played with Steel Wool Mill for the first time, which went very well. good group of guys. it looks like we’ll be playing with them more often. in fact, we played a small st. patrick’s day event at La Dolce Vita restaurant in st. joseph. that was all kind of strange and the conditions under which we ended up playing were less than optimal, but it happens.
we’ll be playing Hazel’s Coffee House at the end of april. not sure if we’ll look for something in-between then and now or not. at the moment, we’re going to take a few weeks to let someone work some kinks out of our guitars, as they are in need of adjustment and repair. we hope to play several more shows before the summer, so if you’re in the area, keep your ears open.
later.

hey peeps. not sure if i already mentioned it, but our last-minute gig at cafe acoustic on feb. 2nd went well. thanks to zale beldsoe (aka For the Sound) for inviting us to play. we also had the opportunity to take the stage with zale again this past tuesday in omaha, ne. we played for all of about 10 people, but it was still a pretty good show. i think we both gave pretty solid performances.
we're going to be playing at cafe acoustic again march 15th. we're very grateful to lisa and beth at cafe acoustic for letting us book there so easily. i guess it's the closest thing to a home base we have.
we recently put up a track we recorded during the feb. 2nd show at the cafe. it's our song Ficus and it's an extended version. there are a few mistakes and the quality of the recording isn't quite perfect, but it's pretty good all-in-all. please have a listen if you haven't yet, and let us know what you think. thanks to all of you who are listening to our tracks. we appreciate the support.

we played a short-notice gig tonight that went pretty well. crowd was good and we only lost the plot once. all in all, i can live with that. Zale Bledsoe (aka For the Sound) asked us to come help fill out the night. i think we got a pretty good recording of Ficus that only has one or two somewhat minor mistakes. i'll probably put it up.
we were really trying (or at least it was a personal goal of mine) to get a good recording of an unrecorded tune, Sun Soon Sighs, which is about 7.5-8 min long. it was right at a tempo change that the plot was lost. dave about managed to salvage everything, but i was thrown way off and couldn't get on the right page. so we picked up and the next spot and took off. so it was like having two separate tunes of a solid 3-4 min, but the song will be realeased at the moment in two parts, if i put it up at all. we're playing in Omaha, NE on the 12th of feb., so i will attempt to do it again, it the owners of this place will let me. if not, we'll head to cafe acoustic sometime for the sole purpose of recording a decent version of it. they are very good to us.
and now that i've mentioned it, we're going to Omaha, NE on the 12th for another show with Zale. we've very greatful to him for asking us to tag along. as i mentioned, i'm hopeful to catch some good takes there. start looking out for new live material.

So, who is Kellen Perry? That's a good question. We also didn't know wh he was until he was kind enough to review our song Ficus. At this point all I can tell you is that he writes very interesting reviews (that statement is based on reading his other reviews, I promise!), wears glasses, and writes a music review blog. The latter was a bit redundant, I know, since it's already pretty obvious. Well, enough jibber jabber, and onto the review.
You can access the full bolg entry (and it might help since he makes references to earlier portions of the entry when reviewing us) or you can just read the portion about us:
"St. Joseph, MO's mainly instrumental Sylvan Lane sound a little like American Football and a lot like Owen (Mike Kinsella's current project). In "Ficus," Brandon Bone and David Hawk sing something about fissures and wakes and pressure, and it's all vague and pretty and it really works, breaking up the twinkly monotony. It's almost overwhelmingly tasteful, but, like Kinsella's projects and a lot of the Jim O'Rourke-influenced post-rock stuff coming out of Chicago in the past decade or so, it's tempered with this genuine melancholy that keeps it from sounding like the score to some Pilates workout video." - Kellen Perry, TWPOT, Oct. '07
After reading the entry, we felt in necessary to let Kellen know what the lyrics of Ficus are about. And for those of you who don't know, and that's probably all of you, they are about plate tectonics. It's a somewhat unusual and elusive way to talk about it, but that's what we're singing about. When we wrote to kellen and told him what the song's about, he had this to say:
"Honestly, you guys could just recite the names of Negro League outfielders over and over and it'd be lovely."
Many thanks to kellen for the nice review and I encourage everyone to stop by and read his reviews. All of them! You just might find some new music to enjoy.

Howdy! Just a few quick words for those of you out there that read this and happen to listen to the music as well.
We've got a few new tracks posted from our show last Saturday at Cafe Acoustic. Lisa and Beth were realy kind and also recorded the set. We've taken a few of the tracks and made them available here on Myspace. To hear what 's missing here, you can go to our profile at Unsignedbandweb.com.
We've included a less-than-perfect improv piece. Out of all of the tracks, it is probably the most mistake-ridden. There are some really nice parts, though, and it was a lot of fun.
Lastly, we're playing with Pompous Pilot and Cupcake 09/08 at The Rendezvous.

Glad tidings!
The show went as well as could be expected. Lisa and Beth at Cafe Acoustic were really good to us. They even went to the trouble of recording us. We'll have some stuff from the show posted within the next few weeks. Unfortunately, there is a lot of talking in the background. Not just the normal hum of random voices you hear from time to time on a live CD. It's a small place, so you have to sometimes fight them if you're more of an ambient band.
The mics on the guitars were coming through nice and clear for standard club mics. You can hear the talking especially during during low, quiet parts, coming through our vocal mics. Towards of the end of the set it got to the point where we couldn't hear ourselves through the monitors over the talking and had to have the levels raised to the point of the feedback threshold, which we were already flirting with anyway. The levels are nice for the most part. The recording is definitely not good enough for a live album.
In short, some of the tracks turned out all right, and good enough to post for fun, although the have a few mistakes here and there. Some of the tracks are just not performed well enough and some of them turned out like shit because we couldn't hear ourselves over the group of people talking. At least in the actual recording the music stands out.
We hope you'll enjoy the live tracks and a bulletin will be sent around when the finally get posted. To any of you that were at the show, thanks for coming out. Thanks again to Lisa and Beth for having us and recording us.

It's been a while.
While nothing extremely monumental has happened lately - or ever for that matter, things are taking a turn for the better at the moment. Dave's tendinitis has improved a great deal. As many of you probably know, we're playing a show at Cafe Acoustic this Saturday, August 25th. For the Sound will be getting things started around 9 pm. Before that it's open mic. This will be a 100% acoustic show!
Dave and I will be undertaking an ambitious 1.25+ hour set. We're used to putting together half-hour sets. This should be interesting to say the least. Since we're getting quite a bit of time to play, and we've had time to (pretty much) finish some material we've been putting together for a long time, almost two-thirds of our set will be made up of songs we'll be performing for the first time. That's scary. For the Sound will also be playing an extended set, or at least he has time to. That's a lot less scary. We've been talking about doing this for a while now and everyone involved is pretty excited that this thing is going to finally happen. Too bad we're known by few. At least Dave and I are.
We also recently had another stroke of luck when our new friend, Kiley with St. Joe band Pompous Pilot, asked us to open for them and Cupcake at the Rendezvous on September 8th. We'll post more details as they become known to us. Tis should be one solid show as Pompous Pilot and Cupcake are duly know for their consistant, high-quality performances. Don't miss it!

Hi folks,
Well, we're almost ready to go again. we've got a show scheduled for August 25 at Cafe Acoustic. For the Sound will also be performing that evening. It should be a solid show and 100% acoustic. Don't let that be a deterrent! I promise you that you will be pleasently surprised. It won't be your run-of-the-mill acoustic show. We promise to offer you something unique. For the Sound is just finishing up a new album, which will hopefully be ready by then, and you'll be able to hear some of the newer tracksthat perhaps you haven't heard yet. For our part, we'll also be performing some new tracks that you've never heard (and there are some older ones as well that you've never heard).
Please come out and support us and the Cafe. You'll be happy you did.
We'll keep everyone posted as the time draws near.

hello everyone.
unfortunately, i don't have any good news to post this time around. the show we had in the works (basically it was all set) had to be rescheduled because Dave was just diagnosed with tendinitis. he has been having troubles with his right arm off and on for a few months, but it recently got to be too much, so he went to the doctor. fortunately, it doesn't seem to be too bad and will just take some rest, and arm brace, and some heavy anti-inflammatory medication to clear up.
of course, you don't get rid of something like tendinitis very easily, if ever. we're both hopeful that the current treatment will be enough to keep the tendinitis from getting out of hand (no pun intended) and had keep it stable enough so we can practice, play shows, and record without too much worry.
at the moment, we're planning on trying to reschedule the gig at Cafe Acoustic for the 3rd of August, but we'll only know for sure after a few weeks of testing the waters. just keep your fingers crossed for him.

hello again!
last sunday i played the "save the mule fest" solo and kind of fucked things up on the first few tunes. luckily, either people couldn't tell what was a mistake, or they were nice enough to pretend they didn't. overall, things went well and a good time was had by all. i think about 14 or 15 bands ended up playing out of the planned 17. there were some issues regarding procedure. for the most part, things worked out. i also got a chance to hang out with and see some of the other local bands, which was a good time.
the next bit of news is that we're going to be playing (99.9% certain) at cafe acoustic june 23. it also won't be for and open mic night this time either. it's not certain who else will be playing that night, but we'll keep posting what we know in the show's details.
