We've been picky.  We've been whittling away at the album and now finally we're satisfied.  With the amount of blood, sweat and tears that have gone into TRaMpoline, it would have been a shame to give in to our temptations and push it out before it was 100%.  The extra effort was worth it.

Now that the songs are done, what next?  Artwork.  We've settled on front and back cover art.  When the package is put together, it's off to the presses.  Then we can book the official date of the CD release party; And we march on.

Well, the album is basically finished... finally! This week, we're listening for any last-minute fixes. Then it's on to album artwork, reproduction, etc. We are thrilled to be on the verge of releasing our baby out into the world.

It looks like we'll probably have our CD release party in January. We'll start looking for venues in a couple of weeks. In the meantime, keep an eye out for the release of our first single. We'll make it available here on MySpace well before the album hits; just to give you a taste.

Here's the final list of songs:

Big Gun
Crazy Girls
Can't Knock Me Down
Broken Me
Time
And I Weep
My Little Sister
Blindfold
Rafflesia
Inhuman
Walk Away

Here we go!

Okay, so we've got some explaining to do. It's been a while since we've updated the official site or MySpace with any news of the new record. Here's why:

We were on pace for the planned October release of TRaMpoline, the impending new record featuring all three current members of The Rhythm Merchant. We finished recording in late June.  Then the computer at the center of our Digital Studio became frightfully ill.

The complete and utter incompetence of Gateway tech support meant that we didn't get the computer back until early AUGUST, right before Pat and I each went off on vacation. Now that I'm back in the US, and I've just about got the new computer up and running, TRaMpoline is back on track.

In the studio's downtime, I've been working on a website redesign, which should be online soon. And the album itself is already sounding great, even in the early stages of mixing and mastering. By the end of this week, I should have a good idea of when we can reasonably expect the album's release, as well as a rough estimate for when we'll have our giant CD Release Party.

Thanks for your patience!

The end is nigh. I'm mastering EIGHT songs right now, flipping from song to song trying to get a consistent sound. The bass drum, for example. I started with a track called My Little Sister. Once I got a decent cross between "punchy" and "boomy" (yes, I use only highly technical jargon), I applied the same EQ and effects to the bass drum tracks in the other seven songs. This way we get some consistency in sound from one track to another. This process is repeated for each drum, vocal, guitar, and bass track in each song. Then I get to work setting the levels and all the rest of it.

I'm dying to share more, like the album title or snippets of songs, but all in due time. We've got eight songs down and four or five more to go, so we're getting close. In the meantime, check us out when we come up for air at Kenny's Castaways March 23rd. We'll be playing a mix of new songs and old favorites. Until then...

Just got home a little while ago from re-recording the solo for Can't Knock Me Down... After a luscious Italian dinner (thanks Mrs G.) and a challis sized..glass of cabernet sauvignon, we got to work and I must say it sounds AMAZING!.. You have NO IDEA how excited I am for this song... It's so cool to hear something... such as a what then may have seem simple guitar riff that you wrote years ago, come to life as an..actual SONG; inspired..by you and your "bandmates"... A discussion came up actually between Dave and I about how the song is not even mixed or mastered or ANYTHING yet... it's just totally raw... and it STILL sounds AWESOME... I CAN'T WAIT TO LET ALL OF YOU HEAR THIS!!!.. I CAN'T WAIT!!!

It's been a while since the last blog update on the progress of the album. Why, you ask? Because the recording process came to a screeching halt for most of October. Anyone who has ever had major computer problems can relate. One day in early October Eric and I got together to lay down some backing vocals for Can't Knock Me Down. Suddenly and inexplicably, we couldn't play back or record music without it stuttering every so often. Not only was this annoying, but it made it impossible to record anymore.

Without boring you with details, I'll sum up by saying that I spent a great many frustrated hours (and a few dollars) doing everything I could to solve the problem. I reinstalled software and hardware, added an external hard drive to my rig, and did just about anything else you could think of. Mere minutes before resorting to a bit of the ol' ultraviolence, I found the culprit: a misbehaving USB port. Now that I have my computer and my sanity back, we're going to kick it into high gear and try to make up for lost time. Big thanks to the people on the Cubase forums, without whom I would probably be on heavy medication by now. ----Dave
