Greetings here from the Great Sand Box. Today Mark Day 17 since I arrived in country. My days already seems repitive, like the movie "Groundhog Day". My Day starts at 0530 and ends at 2000 roughly, mainly because I am in charge of the Aid Station.

I came here on the lead crew, which we stopped in Maine, Spain & Italy before here in Iraq. I did enjoy myself, maybe a little too much.

When we first got here, it was 116 or so,. And I did walked to the flight line, which was about a mile or so, things that a corpsman will do for his Marines. Then a few days we had gusty winds with sand everywhere. The visibility was very low. Then today and yesterday, it quite nice in the morning and warm in the afternoon. I don't believe it got over 100 these last few days.

I did post some pictures on my fotopage and wrote a small entry on my corpsman & co on blogspot. I hope all is well with everyone, and would like to hear from ya!! Take care and be safe,

Merv Griffin  Hollywood is mourning the death of Merv Griffin.  Merv Griffin was a good businessman in my book.  He was a good real estate mogul, which including the Beverly Hills Hotel to casinos in Las Vegas.  But one if his biggest mark is, creating "Wheel of Fortune" and "Double Jeopardy".  Which he even had a talk show in the 1970s.  He did succomb to prostate cancer at the age of 82.  "Rest in Peace"...

Heroes, anothert series which I downloaded from I tunes, I never seen it, just heard of it and I really was not sure what it was exactly about.  Sol, I decided to download the first episode to watch to see if  I will like it or not.  And you know what, I did so I download the entire first season, which was 24 episodes in all.  All watch the entire season in three days, when I got done watching one episode, I had to watch another and another and another... I was an estonishing series and with a different twist like you never seen before.  Heroes, made its own fan base...I guess....I not that much a sci fi junkie, I do like thoses kind of shows, I usually watch Smallville religiouly, but I could not keep up with it last season, then I gave up. I cannot commit myself from week to week, but cannot wait until season two comes out on I-tunes.  I hoe all enjoy...

I-tunes was great.  I dont watch mouch TV during the regular seasons, because I cannot commit myself to watch TV the same night of the week every week.  Especially me being the military.  I am always on the go personal or business wise.  But I decided to down load a few shows from I-tunes to see what are they about.  And on the shows that I downloaded was "DRIVE", which aired last season, but know what I thought it was quite good and had my attention the first six episodes off of I-tunes, because that was all it came out last season.  After watching those episodes it left off with an intriguing cliff hanger, I was excited about next season.  A friend of mine, who sat right there has I watch these episodes and I staed that I cannot wait for next season to see what happen next, He said, "Oh, yeah...it was cancelled"  Boy I was disappointed, if I knew that I would not got my hopes up to watch the first season that was making wanting more...but that was life....I did enjoy the first season.

I went to Viejas to play one more tournament before I head off to Iraq. I showed up this morning at 0900 to registar and to receive my seat card which was table number 20 and seat 9.  There were a total  of 160 people in the tournament, because there were hell a lot of alternates.  Needless to say, I started out real slow and was even down to one or two chips a few time.  But the out come was I place 8 out of 160 which was in the money.  Any one thing about the Sunday morning tournament you also receive $5 bounties, which I did received a total of $20 in bounties. It was a good moring, especially I thought I would be out there in an hour like the usual.  Intead I remain, over three hours.  But it was a good morning,  Good luck and remember to poker hard.....

Now I probally got some of your attention with this subject line.  I was just watching Fox News this morning and they were talking about Cock fighting is banned in 49 states.  At this moment, Louisiana is the only state that cock fighting is legal.  But a bill just pass in that state to outlaw it starting next summer.  Me, I am in difference.  Its not my thing, but I do think it is cruelty that its not call for.

Just like dog fighting, its cruelty that its not call for...  Dog fighting is illegal in all 50 states.

I was there for almost 6 days and I left early Sunday, July 22nd aand drove back towards Denver where I spent the day and drop my rental Vehicle off at the Airport and flew back to San Diego that evening on the Frontier Airline.

I made it to Nebraska yesterday.  I flew into Denver  Monday night after my plane was an hour late leaving Dallas.  I did give me a chance to visit with my Aunt and Uncle in Denver Monday night and Tuesday morning.  I rented a full size Ford Explorer which has leather seats and a sun roof and fully loaded for the week from Denver, and go figure it has "Washington" plates on it. It is a real easy ride and it is bigger than my 4Runner.

It took me about three hours to drive out here from Denver.

But last night, a friend of mine, Vincent, who just got out of the Marines Corps a few weeks ago, who is from North Platte, which is 20 miles from my grandmother's farm; call me and met with him and his family for dinner at the Applebees in North PLatte, then we visited at his house and play a little poker. It is always good to see friends, when you are on the road.  The Scotts are very good people and I enjoy myself with them.

I am staying with my grandmother this week who will have her big 92nd birthday in North PLatte this Saturday.  She is one terriffic lady. I will write more about this week later, I hope all have a good week.

peace out...

I am just sitting here in the airport in Longview, TX awaiting for my plane to depart for Dallas.  I only have 20 minutes to catch my connection in Dallas before I move on to Denver this evening. I will spend tonight in Denver and drive to Nebraska tomorrow for the remainder of the week.

Fun time, I just spend the last 10 days in Louisiana, boy we had lots of rain.  I still do not have to be back to work for another 8 days, I am still going keep on relaxing.

But, I been getting on an average, two phone calls a day from my Marines in the squadron, it is nice to be needed at times, or know that I am miss.

Everyone enjoy, I will talk more later....

Bossier Battlewings, which is the local Arena football team.  Last night I attended the Arena Football with my brother and one of my nephew at the Bossier City Arena, and I will tell you one thing, it was different.  Unlike the NFL team, Arena football is played indoors on a 50 yds field, but they still played with four-15 mins quarters with a half time. It was a good time last night and a good excuse to drink beer, like you really need an excuse.

Last night we played Rio Grande Dorados, which we lost with a final score of 42-39.  But it was a good game, especially at the beganiing a few fights broke out with some players and causing some players evicted from the game.

There is also a former Dallas Cowboy QB, Quincy Carter who playes now for the Battlewings.  It has to be a big difference going from the NFL to an Arena footbal team.  link  You could check out the link if you wish.  Enjoy,

History

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE CITY OF BOSSIER CITY

By Clifton D. Cardin, Official Bossier Parish Historian

The area of Bossier City dates back to the 1830's when it was the Elysian Groves Plantation of James and Mary Cane. Steamboat loads of cotton, corn, and sweet potatoes were shipped to markets in the south and east, from the plantation port known to many as "Cane's Landing."

During the Civil War, several companies of local confederate soldiers left Cane's Landing aboard steamboats for the distant battlefields. During the war, the riverfront was protected from Union invasion by the artillery embankments of Battery's Price, Walker and Ewell. The confederate Fort Smith stood near what is now Bossier High School and protected the area from an eastern invasion.

Many, many early settlers passed through the region on their way to the Wild West. By 1850, over 200 wagons a week were passing through Bossier City. Some of these settlers stayed, attracted by the fertile soil and lush river valley.

By 1882, the plantation was at the center of the convergence of the infamous Shed Road, The Red River steamboat waterway and the soon to arrive "Iron Horse" railroad. The plantation was reached from the west, across the Red River by means of a ferryboat named the "Sterling White."

Anna B., granddaughter of James and Mary, together with her husband J. J. Stockwell, felt the area would prosper and began promoting the idea of a riverfront city. Anna B. and J. J. Stockwell started selling lots in their newly formed Bossier City on October 5, 1883. The area grew quickly, as did transportation through it.

The golden spike, commemorating the completion of the east-west Vicksburg, Shreveport and Pacific Railroad, was driven at Bossier City on July 12, 1884, by Julia "Pansy" Rule. It was the first such spike driven by a woman. The north-south Shreveport and Arkansas Railroad was completed through Bossier City on April 6, 1888. The Louisiana-Arkansas Railroad was completed through on November 2, 1909. The Dixie Overland Highway from the east to west coast was built through Bossier City in 1918. These railroads and highways combined to make Bossier City a hub for future activity.

Bossier City's population expanded from 775 citizens in 1910, to 3,000 in 1930, 5,000 in 1940 and 15,260 in 1950, with another 10,000 living just outside the city. By 1950, Bossier City attained the designation "The Fastest Growing City in Louisiana." In 1997, that population was approximately 55,000.

A devastating fire, on June 23, 1925, consumed one-half of downtown Bossier City. That tragedy found local citizens unable to battle the ferocious blaze. The loss spurred civic improvements including a modern water system, capable of fighting such fires, a New City Hall, a modern fire alarm system, modern sidewalks and the first city park.

An area south of Bossier City was chosen in 1928 to house a National Guard air squadron. Barksdale Field was officially dedicated February 3, 1933. It was later renamed Barksdale Air Force Base, and is home to the "mighty" Eighth Air Force. It's social and economic impact to Bossier City and Northwest Louisiana has never been questioned. From this, two major city arteries derive their names, Barksdale Blvd and Airline Dr.

By 1900, Bossier City was the domicile of several large factories. Hamilton's Cotton Oil Mill, from which Hamilton Road gains it's name, is a perfect example of an early factory. The mill processed cottonseed and produced cotton oil; from which hundreds of items ranging from oil and animal feed to early plastics were made.

The discovery of petroleum crude oil, to the south, in 1908, thrust Bossier City into the nationwide oil boom. Bossier's central location to the many rural oil fields made it a major player in the oil patch.

Several international oil companies located here. The economic advantages brought by "black gold" fueled many more civic, social and economic improvements.

Bossier City's name has always been unique. First known as Cane's Landing, it was briefly referred to as Alexander's Precinct and Caneville. It was first officially named and incorporated as the Village of Bossier City, then the Town of Bossier City and the City of Bossier City.

At one time, postal employees refused to deliver mail addressed to the Town of Bossier City, declaring it was just a town, not really a city. It took legislative action, initiated by Overton Brooks to have the United States Postal Service recognize the name of the Town of Bossier City. Thus the present name, The City of Bossier City. The ever-expanding city limits have grown to encompass the old railroad stations and communities of Brownlee, Barksdale, Bleinhem, Ferguson, Fosters, Fullilove, Hinkle and Shady Grove.

Bossier City has thrived because it is transitional. First a cotton exporting river landing, next a railroad town, then an airbase and oil-boom town, it now garners attention, tourism and an economic boost from the newest boom, recreational gaming. Three riverboats, Horseshoe, Casino Magic and Isle of Capri line Bossier City's developing riverfront.

Bossier's officials have repeatedly foreseen the future and worked for the improvements that forward striving people realize. It now stands ready to approach and face the new century and millennium.
