TIME OFF MAGAZINE -
VEGAS KINGS Dead Money (Merenoise/MGM)
History cites rocknroll as coming from the blues and in the case of the Vegas Kings - well, theyre from Brisbane. Its easy to assume a sort of blues element in their music, but Dead Money houses 11 tracks of primal, plugged-in and turned up no-nonsense that only the Vegas Kings can put a name to.
With Spooky Records chief Loki Lockwood behind the controls (with the aid of Chet Weise of Immortal Lee County Killers fame), its a sushi-like affair in the production side of things, capturing the band as closely to their more familiar live environment as possible.
With three years between their debut For Those Who Came In Too Late, The Vegas Kings have matured in leaps and bounds, moving away from any semblance of a fashionable blues-rock pastiche and into something that displays a more personal vision from within the duelling guitarists/singers Benjamin P Doherty and Pete Collins.
Nicely augmented by cameos from members of Texas Tea, SixFtHick and The Standing 8 Counts, Dead Money makes for a well-propped up album that glimmers in a high-volumed fashion.

Dead Money Vegas Kings (MereNoise/MGM)
For a devoted music lover, nothing is more exciting than an excellent local band. Around since 2003, Brisvegan band Vegas Kings has produced a hell of a rocking album of punk/garage blues. With deliciously dirty bluesy guitar riffs, impetuous hard-hitting drums and a heavy punching bass, every element of this second album from the three-piece comes together brilliantly to create a strong, powerful and textured sound. Above all this, the band is led by vocals full of grunt, expressing lyrics of anger, melancholy and chaos. Retaining authenticity, the album refrains from being over-produced, maintaining the raw and organic affections in the bands delivery. The energetic, highly intense, rambunctious feeling of the album is well varied, with contrasting songs such as The Ballad of Broke Jim and Daddys Gone, belted out slow and full of angst. The Vegas Kings original songwriting is also juxtaposed with covers of Digger and the Pussycats and The Stooges, made to sound uniquely their own. Fun yet soulful, Dead Money is an album that does everything rock music should do.
