About the Album:
Two years in the making, the 12 tracks on Coup D'Yah unleash the devastating bass-weighted sound which has become the recognized trademark of the crew's eponymous NYC club night and its blazing live sets. Coup spans a broad spectrum, from the dub-wise depths to dancefloor crushing bangers.
SS has carved a unique global footprint, leading with heavy ragga inflection, thick beats, wide basslines, and live organic instrumentation ranging from the drums and wind instruments of India to the marching horns of New Orleans. The album showcases the signature vocal talents of Zulu (Ghislain Poirier, DJ C), MC Coppa (Al Haca, Stereotyp) Napoleon Solo (Ming & FS), and Sub Swara's own rising star Juakali (Sub Swara, Kush Arora, Pinch, D1 and more).
What People are Saying:
' A Masterful piece of work. Sub Swara deals with the most fascinating melt of sound - beats and bass laced with the elemental voice of Juakali...pure heaven...The Sub Swara mix was devastating - contender for mix of the year on the BBC Radio 1 show for real.' - Maryanne Hobbs, BBC Radio 1
'Sub Swara manages to transfer the eclectic sounds of their New York club night to tape, bleeding and blending dubstep, ragga, dub, global elements and straight up dance music in a flawless manner that's always fresh, never stale. Their ability to fuse the dark with the subtle and danceable with the complex is a marvel' - Kid Kameleon, XLR8R Magazine
'If you're looking for one entry track into this sound, look out for Koli Stance, a masterclass in swirling subcontinental tablas and warping dubstep bass' - Blackdown, Pitchfork Media

I have to stop this habit of waiting so long between blog entries that I end up with way more to talk about than the online human attention span can tolerate. So I'll do my best to abridge. Had a great trip to India. Proper fam time and then three shows - 2 in Mumbai and one in Goa. The first show in Mumbai was at a new joint called the Blue Frog, that's built a bunch of rightful hype about it's dopeness. We closed the night after Shair and Func played and it was the first time combo of Bass Society, myself, Jua and Shamik the human beatbox - was great seeing the crowd figure out how to deal with new sounds and then be fully into it by the middle of the set. Came strong with some dubstep classics and a bunch of our originals. Goa was a blast. We rocked out at Paradiso, in Anjuna set on a hill overlooking the ocean. Had a big crowd and as one would expect, lots of international variety given the time of year in Goa. Bass Society and I ended up playing for about 4 hours straight with Jua and Shamik on mic detail. Definitely the highlight show of the whole India jaunt. Here's a photo montage from the gig that my friend Kirk put together -- http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q262/velvetflood/bass-temple.jpg
Had breakfast the morning of Jan. 3 by the ocean with Bass Society and Juakali and then jumped in a car for the start of the 36 hour journey home. Full on planes trains and automobiles. But given that I'm pretty much narcoleptic on planes, I was pretty well rested once I touched down in NYC. Plus, I was properly juiced for the launch of Takeover at Sub Swara the next day at Love. Probably one of my favorite nights ever. Place was slammed and the confluence of all 4 Takeover crews (Sub Swara, Dub War, Trouble & Bass, and Secret Night of Science) was a representation of New York underground bass culture at its best IMHO -- crews coming together to bring an amazingly mixed bag of sounds, keeping things fresh all through the night. From the roots reggae and old skool funk that kicked off the night to to dub step, bassline house, dnb, grime, breakbeat, and dancehall that peppered the night it was an amazing voyage. Tons of pics and vids all over Facebook and such so check em out)
So much for brevity but I did my best. Sub Swara 026 comes thru Feb. 1 with Ana Sia (Glitch Mob) and DJ C (Mashit) coming thru to the wreck the dex with us! Sharma's coming over in a few as we're finishing a new tune leveraging a lot of the studio recording I did in south India over the last trip. Cranking away to finish the SS album in the next 2 months! Sorry for the delay to all those who've been checking in about it but I think it will be worth it!
Happy 08.

It was a long, tough delivery given the 6-foot 160-pound frame, but we muscled through it and are delighted to welcome Sharmaji (aka Dave Sharma) as the newest resident of Sub Swara! Lots of peeps know that Dave and I have been collabing on several original productions and it made total sense for the badman to jump on. So the final SS of the year will feature his first resident SS set in a tag team joint with yours truly. Make sure to drop some congratulatory spanks on the bwoy - we went easy on the hazing so bring it on!
Here's to closing out 2007 big and a new and improved start to 2008... See you Saturday Dec. 1 @ Love for SS 024 (feat. Stereotyp and Maryanne Hobbs, Dhruva vs. Sharmaji, and Sub Swara Live) -- check out www.subswara.com for more info, reduced tickets, etc.

(Written Oct. 25 2007)
It's been far too long since I put the pixel pen to this page but better late than never. The last couple months have been a whirlwind for Sub Swara and a blessed one at that. From Shambhala (check Juakali's blog about this -- www.myspace.com/Juakali - he does proper justice to how it went down and it went down large!).
None of us in the SS crew have really reflected about Burning Man this year and it's definitely worth a hot minute. We started things off at the Temple of Breaks (Haj was there earlier and I only wish I could have witnessed his lunar eclipse set with Koli Stance dubbing out the Playa). and it was a wonderful way to kick things off. We rolled up in the afternoon on Wednesday and were fully immersed in the full peppered spectrum of emotion and sensation that the Playa bestows from the getgo. Ran into Haj and Vanita pretty quick after a little bicycle cout mission and we knew it was an auspicious beginning. Patricio and Smoove laid down a phatty breaks set before us and then we took the rig at the Temple -- I'd be lying if I said we didn't have some nerves in the mix. The whole logistics of transporting tablas on the playa, our admittedly high maintenance set up, etc. ..but all was laid to rest right quick. We took the stage.. tablas wrapped in EV light as were Sunder's arms and Haj starting things off on the decks -- was a blast (you can check some video at... http://youtube.com/watch?v=NFgxewxCZ0E - sound is distorted off the camera mic but you get the vibe). FreQ Nasty and Oscure balzed through the rest of the night -- illy fully. Next day was the Entheon Village, which , amidst a tragic backdrop (tweakin dude climbed to the top of the dome and ended up falling 40 feet to the ground, dying of internal bleeding 2 days later) ended up ironically being one of my favorite sets there. A Real voyage through the SS soundscape and with Videolicious' wizardry it was a feast of synaesthesia all round. Friday I got to play rock a sunset dubstep set with strictly North American dubstep fam (Djunya, Lighta! crew and more) on a Turbo sound rig (what! I could get used to having a sub monitor up in the booth - big up to Danny Corn and Moon tribe crew). Was the nice intimate bass session I was looking for right about then. Later that night, Sunder, Bass Society and I did the Pyramid Giza on the Playa -- was a lotta fun reconnecting with the Texas crew and was more of an uptempo set -- trading 2's and 3s throughout. And quite possibly my favorite session was at El Circo on Sunday morning -- the one that closed it out for us on the BM stages -- The lush Baggend Soundsystem and proper family vibes throughout as the sun warmed up and rejuvenated...fruit being passed around, Chris Sia dropping a beautifully melodic low freQ set beforehand and Lighta crew rampin after (blessed be they for braving the difficulties of vinyl on the playa and still comin' correct).
Then back to NY -- couple days after being back from the Burn we dropped down to Crash Mansion on the LES to play a show with DJ Spooky and Liquid Todd as part of the HOWL Festival -- we were a newly tuned machine after the run of shows over the past few months and I think Juakali saw the change (he wasn't with us at BM this time round) and had a nice little grin on his face seeing things move to the next level. Was one of the best sets we've had this year and funny that it was to an empty room for all of us. Wonder when was the last time we or Spooky or Todd played to like 15 people -- but it was a blast! It was basically rehearsal -- tried new shit, Sunder running dubstep (what?!), breaking out thumb pianos and kazoos ;).
The Soundtribe Sector 9 party was ill, albeit with mad problems with the venue and technicalities throughout the day -- never one to be a hater, but if ur gonna do a show at Rebel, make sure you got shit locked down and that they actually show up with a game face -- that's all I'm gonna say.
Played another show that night and as much as it was bitter to be missing DMZ at Dub War, I paid hommage to Mala, Loefah et al. on the roof at Grand Space in Brooklyn till the cusp of sunrise and that was as sweet as I could have hoped for. Was exhausting and beautiful and I felt like I was on an urban Burning Man romp and that's not a bad way to feel.
And then we come to the Sub Swara 2 year anniversary at Love. What more can be said about Love than the shit is the illest sound rig in NYC! The GLitch Mob Bredren and Amar (Surya Dub, electric Vardo, SF) got up with us that night for a plus-capacity crowd and it was better than anything we could have hoped for. Slammin' all night, hype crowd (big up SS fam!) and a nice little surprise tagteam dubstep session with Dave Q (Dub War), Haj and myself at the end to close things out. We've found our tru home for the SS night in NY.
And last weekend, all you can say is what a wise man (badman) named Juakali once said -- "you better come to Dub Waaaaar!" Time to make a t-shirt....Sharmaji and I did a tag team dusbtep session, dropping a grip of new original dubs during our set to open the gates for Joe Nice and Vex'D! Can safely say this was one of my favorite gigs of my life. The Dub War crowd is so forward, so open, so thirsty for new bass weight. I was blushing throgh my Dravidian skin pulling rewinds on new shit that Kush Arora and I and Sharma and I did. And Vex'D ---dayaaamm - live PA set and it was a proper journey through soulful, devastating, eerie, massive, and whatever other adjectives that do more justice than the trite ones I just dropped. Rolie and Jamie (aka Vex'D) dropped it large as did Dub War Residents, Dave Q and Joe Nice and Jua on the mic... and on a revamped and retooled Love soundystem at that -- as if it couldn't get any nastier!
So that brings up to right about now. Sunder, Haj and I are off to Boulder for the Voix de La Ville gig this weekend, Jua's off to Europe and Asia next wek (he and I'll be connecting for show in India this December and January), and next week we've got the follow up to the Sub Swara 2 year anniversary with DJ SUV (Roni Size Reprazent crew, V Recordings) and ELF (Maui) comin thru. Gonna be LARGEness.
So much more to come this year, a pivotal 07 in so many ways.
08 is comin' correct with the TAKEOVER at Love -- more on that soon -- too big for now plus I'm about to get carpal tunnel from typing...

Some nice respects from Pitchfork Media about Sub Swara, our bredren event Surya Dub (SF), and Koli Stance (which Dave Sharma and I produced).
http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/feature/41803-the-month-in-grimedubstep
Blackdown is the pen-man behind the monthly column and is essential for all those who want to keep track of worldwide bass culture. Damn good producer too! His track, Lata, will be out along with Koli Stance on the Agriculture label later this year.
See ya'll on April 6th at the next Sub Swara NYC (www.subswara.com, www.myspace.com/subswara)!

Wanna send big up to my bredren Bobby Friction for representing dub step and bringing some new heat to the BBC Asian Network.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/asiannetwork/friction/
Koli Stance (out later this year on the Agriculture's dubstep comp, Global Steps), which Dave Sharma and I produced is sittin' at #1 on the Friction top 5 on the BBC Asian network.
Nice to see different vibrations crossing over. Koli's sitting in Kiid Kameleon's play list along with those of a bunch of other dubwise and dubstep DJs - to see it representing on both sides of the pond and in different aesthetic buckets is a lovely thing.
Here's to more boundary topplin'.
Respects always.

So Dave Sharma (aka Sharmaji) and I just finished a great collab on a dub step joint that's going to be coming out on the Agriculture imprint (home of DJ rupture, DJ olive, Sub Dub, badawi, etc.) later this year.
Both Dave and I are percussionists, producers, DJs, and bass junkies so it was a great collab from top to bottom.
Track is called Koli Stance ... keep a look out.
