....
"the magic of transcending time and space when one quietly observes... thus unfolds the beauty of the ordinary" (excerpt from my artist's statement)
Before I ever picked up a camera, there was always something about 'openings' which drew me near, piqued my curiosity, and gave me a deeper sense of presence. The long tunnel of light between rows of corn in the field, an entry to a cave, storm cellar doors, stable gates, flickering spaces between rail cars while watching a train pass by. In my mind, these 'openings' were experiences waiting to be taken.....
Funny - just this moment I wondered if my choice of the word "opening" would convey to you the concept Im speaking of, so I did a quick thesaurus query and smiled as I saw the results: gap... breach... aperture... hole... notch... cavity... opportunity... chance... lucky... break... prospect... gateway.
In 2000 (after I started playing with photography), extended family and friends pointed out the number of doors, etc. I was 'wasting film' on. I began stashing these types of images away in my own private collection (as well as other 'weird' shots) leaving the 'safe/normal' shots out for open viewing. The more time I spent behind the lens, the more 'openings' I caught on film, in secret more often than not, like a closet addict. And by 2002, I began to notice that it wasnt just any 'opening' that would draw me in... just certain ones that seemed to pierce my heart with their silent beckoning. It was then that I began an ongoing collection called "Doors, Windows & Portals". It was even later when I realized why it is I am so drawn to this subject:
more about why here.... and here.... And then a friend's incredible blog (David Leeson's "The Portal" - June 20, 2006) led me to more specifically define the portal experience for myself. Spontaneously, upon reading his blog, without 'thinking', the words poured through my fingers as I commented: Though our fears, shame and self-doubt are indeed the beast awaiting us at every portal... it is love that provides safe passage...
for when we love ourselves enough to accept love from others who are willing to hold the mirror steady so that we can see our weakness and properly arm ourselves to face the awaiting beast and enter this gift from God the portal humbly, yet with confidence
and when we love others enough to stand by them in the dark holding the mirror steady encouraging them as we hand them the armour they have made for themselves we prepare ourselves to witness a great journey one which will, in turn inspire us to prepare for the next journey of our own
I hope you embrace the doors, windows and portals of your own life, as I share with you just a few images from this collection...

Suffice it to say that 'life' has been happening at a break-neck speed for the past several months. The good, the bad, the ugly, and the amazing all came bursting forth with a rigorous roar. While I have a moment to breathe, there will be a fine-tuning of my somewhat scattered focus of late... including a reconnection with myself, my photography and writing, and with others- especially those whom I love dearly. Over the past year, I have taken my 'photo/poetry' challenge into live/interactive art shows and discovered that so much dialogue is created through drawn image replies as well as the written ones. Immediately, I renamed this entire interactive concept "Photo-Ink Challenge". The most recent live creation of this wall was last weekend at the most amazing weekend long live art show, featuring over 50 female artists, musicians, dancers, and creatives. And, yes... the male population showed up in droves. LOL After you leave your voice here on THIS Photo-Ink Challenge blog, I invite you to sneak a peak at how this concept looks in the flesh. Go to http://girlshowblog.wordpress.com/ and virtually visit the live version that took place Aug. 8th at Mokah in Deep Ellum, Dallas TX. If you scroll down that blog roll, you'll get to meet some really kewl female artists who were also featured in last weekend's show. There's also a link on that blog to artlovemagic.com if you want to see why I've been caught in a whirlwind schedule the past several months. LOL So time for the Photo-Ink Challenge... this is where YOU come in!!!(as I exhale) Grab a chair or a pillow and just chill for a bit while I make you a drink... I'm even crackin' out the Turkish coffee for my die-hard friends. Someone grab the doumbek or any instrument off my shelf and let the dialogue flow as it will. If one of
these photographs evokes any thoughts or feelings, please share... your
insights continue to open my eyes, as I can never learn enough from
you. Every word you speak or vision you share is like music dancing its way through my
crazy abstract mind. :)
Just post
a comment sharing the words or visions in your head via poetry, prose, drawings (add a photo scan), sketches (add a photo scan), thoughts,
songs (add a link), etc... they're all welcome here. And by ALL MEANS, you may
choose to 'ink' about all four images if you wish. The more the
better! I adore listening to you, and everyone else will get to step into your perspective for a fresh view, too!
FYI, blogdicking is most
welcome here! I encourage my friends and family to support and inspire
one another by responding to each others' ink. As
always, I am leaving the locations and titles blank, lest I impose my
own thoughts or feelings upon you.
(so glad you came... here's your drink... now, what were you saying???) 1.

The season has finally come... this weather makes me want to snuggle under a pile of blankets at night and burst forth into a brisk, bright morning. This is the time of year I'm all over the place... like squirrels gathering nuts, turning heads with each new sound, flitting up trees, and chattering to one another. Much to do, much to do...
but I cannot go without time listening to you.
Come on inside and let me warm you up with a drink. While I light the stove and grab the teapot, please fill my head with your poetry, stories, songs, thoughts, insights or feelings. Your voice is missing from my kitchen.
If one of these photographs evokes any thoughts or feelings, please share... your insights continue to open my eyes, as I can never learn enough from you. Every word you speak is like music dancing its way through my crazy abstract mind. :)

Today, I had to make the painfully frightening decision to drop my Cobra coverage, after having paid (wasted, it now seems) over two thousand dollars for the four months since I was laid off from work. I once thought that being healthy and staying healthy was enough. The recent death of a friend proved me wrong.
Coincidentally, PBS aired a special program tonight:

"Critical Condition"

View more broadcast times:
"Critical Condition" chronicles the experiences of four Americans without health insurance, including a doorman battling a chronic-liver disease; a woman with Stage 3 ovarian cancer; a diabetic warehouse manager and a chef with a back deformity. |
I got a lump in my throat (in lieu of tears) as the full weight of my decision played out before my eyes. While I swallowed the reality of my own situation, wondering "will that be me?", I knew I had no other choice. Even if I canceled my electric, my lan line, cell phone, car insurance AND took in a roommate... it still would not cover my monthly Cobra payments.
Please check the schedule for P.O.V. at pbs.org, as they will be airing this program again in your area.
Watch it, and then watch this follow-up PBS special (check your local airtimes) to listen to BOTH the Democratic AND the Republican presidential candidate positions, strategies, and visions for healthcare reform...

As I carefully spread pure blackberry preserves atop the softened cream cheese hugging my Thomas Original English muffins, I notice the beaded texture of the preserves and am momentarily transported back to a cross-Atlantic flight when I was served caviar and sour cream atop blinis. This segway takes me back to a time when I simply desired 'something more'. Little did I know then that I had been stifling my inner passion and, instead, attempting to fill the void with material luxuries, social status,etc..
So here I stand now, in my kitchen, barely affording the luxury of this adorned muffin treat. I certainly cannot afford caviar, let alone another FIRST class flight across an ocean (or anywhere)... but ohhhhhhh... I FULLY recognize and pursue my passion! I wholeheartedly encourage (and occasionally inspire) others to follow their own passions. This muffin moment of past and present is richer than all the caviaresque luxuries in the world.
Remember,
and forever believe, my friends...
your passion
IS the roadmap God gave you
to make the
BIGGEST
difference
in this world.
Peace and smiles to you. :)

It's 102 and as dry as the dust on the moon. Dangerous conditions for a Piscean! LOL Come on inside and cool off with a drink (and if it's raining where you are, please shake your mane and cool me off!). While I shave the ice for blueberry and mango snow, please fill my head with your poetry, stories, songs, thoughts, insights or feelings. I crave the liquid sound of your voice in my ear.
Paint me a desert mirage with your words... as they are colours I crave to inhale.

Family matters have kept me on the road and focused on more urgent things the past couple of months. These are the times when I want to just invite you all into my kitchen and quietly fill your mugs and glasses while I hear your voices... soaking in every word you say... and learning from what you have to say.
These are the times when I want to float in the lake, close my eyes from the sun, and hear the water slosh back and forth against the dock... while you describe to me what you are drawing, or read to me the poem you just wrote, or play for me on your guitar the song you just composed.
If one of these photographs evokes any thoughts or feelings, please share... your insights continue to open my eyes, as I can never learn enough from you. Every word you speak is like music dancing its way through my crazy abstract mind. :)

Rain fell through sunshine yesterday. I wanted so badly to dance with a special friend in this rain. But I was on the road, so I wrote this instead. May you all have a spirit-filled season of sumptuous rain.

from Her breath
of life
dance
on my skin
warm, moist rain
covers me
completely
and I
am transcended
all that is
drenches

A 'friend' I met last year at my art show has decided to flaunt my photography as his own..... even though my profile clearly states that all images within my profile, albums, and blogs (unless otherwise noted) are copywritten.
I highly recommend you watch out for your own art. Other users will often store these images in a private album. I happened to see my own art appear as his profile image in his latest status update.
He did comply with my request to either remove the image, acknowledge credit/copywrite or prepare to meet my attorney. I didn't even remove him as a friend, because I truly don't believe he intended harm.
Remember, everyone..... it's kewl to admire art..... it's not kewl to claim another's art as your own.
Myspace Terms of Use Agreement..... (Section 6.3) You represent and warrant that: (i) you own the Content posted by you on or through the MySpace Services or otherwise have the right to grant the license set forth in this Section 6, and (ii) the posting of your Content on or through the MySpace Services does not violate the privacy rights, publicity rights, copyrights, contract rights or any other rights of any person or entity. You agree to pay for all royalties, fees, and any other monies owing any person or entity by reason of any Content posted by you on or through the MySpace Services.
All who know me know that I haven't a vindictive bone in my body..... this is not an attempt to slander his character (notice I never mentioned his name or profile address?), but rather a warning to my fellow artists whom I respect and love dearly.
Be kewl, my friends..... art is to be shared, not taken... Ask permission first... Peace and smiles, ~Carolyn

Although I cannot reveal the names of these angels (part of my promise of confidentiality as a volunteer), I am certain you will come to know these homeless teens as I do... by their spirits. I only wish you knew what these kids have suffered, endured, escaped, and survived.
We just completed an expressive art therapy project... I placed cameras in their hands to give their voices another dimension of expression. Below are their own selections of their best photographs, immediately followed by their own art descriptions and any additional insights they wished to share with the world.
(Note: Although we reviewed elements and principles of photography, the technical is the least of my concerns when working with these kids. When I asked them to select their best work, I stressed that ’best’ refers to the work that has the most impact, affects the viewer in the deepest way.)
Peace, love, and smiles...
~Carolyn
Photograph by AM (age 17)
This picture is multi-layered with contrast, texture and an asymmetrical focal interest. An old tree is knotted and gnarled, but still strong.
 Photograph by AM2 (age 13)
I like the texture in the clouds and the balance of the clouds, ducks and water. I photographed what’s going on outside the door in (the shelter): danger and freedom. And put the camera upside down to get something else! This picture gives me freedom outside because I want to give the world my hope and love for the world!
Something about me is sorrow because people going here and there, and not staying at one place with their family… because of problems other people keep deep down inside themselves… and not let a person who cares about them know that they’re being loved by someone…
 Photograph by BT (age 15)
This photo has a lot of light and darkness. I took this picture because his hand represents the color of my great-grandma’s death as a slave. My great-grandmother’s color of skin was killed and the color of his skin survived.
I want to get a college degree and help others through art and community outreach.
 Photograph by CH (age 17)
This photo has a lot of texture. CH chose this picture "because Roxy is part of the family (at the shelter). She is loveable, sweet, kind-hearted, and will be the one ’person’ that I’ll never forget."
I have problems with controlling my anger and expressing my inner feelings to someone that trust. I think that my heart is filled with darkness… but I really want to find the light! I want to start a family… have a family that I never had ever in my life. I’m just waiting for God to help me or send me a sign to lead me to Him.
 Photograph by JG (age 15)
I took this picture to capture not just trash, but the way it had been throwed out. To me, it symbolizes not just junk, but rather denied beings of matter… just thrown to the side and forgot about like many of us seem to be today. But then, a sense of independence came to mind in a sense that it had been set free.
Sometimes many people see me as only street smart and grown up, but on the inside I cry out for things I’ve never had… and I just want to be a normal kid.
Photograph by JG (age 15)
There is texture, contrast and detail in this photograph...:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
I took this picture to show and capture that the world sometimes may be cruel… but if you stop and pay attention to the many beautiful details of life, then you start to see things more clear and then peace sets in your heart.
 Photograph by MY (age 16)
I took this photo because it looks nice and it was a nice picture to get it. There is balance and I like the details. People are walking and fishing. The man fishing reminds me about my Dad. It makes me feel peaceful.
 Photograph by RM (age 16)
I want the world to know that I can help with people if they need somebody to talk to and I am there to do that. And I can help people with anything they need help with. One more thing… and whenever you need me to come and clean your house, I will come and do that for you!
Love… always!

Current mood: loved
Category: Life
I introduced my niece/would-be-daughter in a recent blog by sharing one of her achingly tender poems (see "is there a place?"). Actually, I was introducing her soul-touching poetry.
For the past 17 years, Morgan and I have spent a LOT of time together. Much of that time was in the car... either to and from her house for weekend visits, or to and from my hometown for visits with her Grandma and Grandpa, or during our infamous niece/aunt road trips.
While searching for my birth family background documents, I ran across a mini-journal (of sorts). It's simply an infrequent noting of conversation snippets that have lifted me back up to the highest mountain. From the age of five (perhaps even younger), Morgan has always had the most profound gift of making people feel needed, wanted, appreciated and loved... when they need it most. I haven't grasped yet if it is intuition or an intense empathy she possesses. But she has a way of answering the emptiness within others... without that emptiness being revealed in any way.
I know a few of us have been struggling 'inside' lately (you know who you are). So I had to run here and post a few random entries from my 'Morgan mini-journal' as a special hug and kiss to my dear, struggling friends (and a warm smile to the rest of my friends)...
Note: these particular excerpts are during Morgan's 5-7yr old period... conversations while Aunt Bea (me) is driving
Morgan: "...when you get married." Aunt Bea: "Who's going to marry me?" Morgan: "Bill." Aunt Bea: "Why?" Morgan: "Because you're pretty."
Morgan: "Why don't you have any kids?" Aunt Bea: "I just don't... but that's okay 'cause you're my special girl." Morgan: "Will you have kids one day?" Aunt Bea: "Maybe." Morgan: "And then they'll be special, too!"
Aunt Bea: "What kind of house would you like to live in some day?" Morgan: "A big one with stairs and a room so you don't have to live all alone."
Morgan: "Why do you drive a silly dirty car?" Aunt Bea: "I just have to right now." Morgan: "Because you're poor?" Aunt Bea: "Yep." (Silence ensues as Morgan scrambles to find her coin purse and slowly, carefully counts her change.) Morgan: "Tomorrow let's go to the store and I'll buy you a new red car. I have some money."
Morgan: "Why do you live all alone, Aunt Bea?" Aunt Bea: "I'm not married and I don't have any kids." Morgan: "You have me."
now you know why I will never feel completely alone... I share this hug with you now... and it is here for you always
