The dust has just settled on our latest offering The Bearded Fish and the Jackalope and already we are setting our sights on our debut album.

And we are setting them high.

We wont release it til we are 100% sure that we have caught what it is we are on record

We want it to get the heart racing, the face smiling and the ear drums saying "play it again"

We wont put any filler on it. Material we consider not to work on the album you can have for free. (Maybe even a downloadable B-sides EP with exclusive artwork?)

New songs are popping out the ether at a sweet frequency now that we can commit the time to jamming ideas at lofi.

Iain's already come up with a title which Niall loves (we take turn about at picking titles fact fans)

Looking at recording it Feb and unleashing it March all being well

Then we will tour our arses off all year

Bronto Skylift - The Bearded Fish and The Jackalope EP

Posted by Austin Tasseltine, Mon 21 Sep 2009
****
Given how hard these two guys play in the live arena, recording them must be as much a matter of trying to cut out the sound of shaking fixtures and windows as anything else. As expected, this succinct little EP resides stubbornly in the red throughout. Lioness has the obvious hooks of a flagship song, but it's on Tiger and Hekla that Bronto really find themselves. Skittish and ill-tempered, both tunes shirk off previous grungy comparisons and see the band press on towards art-punk and its refreshing potential for musical adventure. Devotees will also quickly recognise the Rhubarb-and-Custard-esque gonzo guitar line of closing number, and live favourite Cobblepot.

So we made it back to Glasgow in one piece. kinda.

we will update this blog with pics and stories and stuff ...heres couple o reviews for starters

The List Review

The T Break Stage lacked the general pre-event hoo-ha of previous years, the organisers having done away with showcases and the like, but that didn’t mean there wasn’t a wealth of meaty goodness to chow down on. Cheerily deranged Glasgow duo Bronto Skylift (●●●●) do the kind of guitar and drums hurricane that invokes a more untidy, Dinosaur Jr-go-to-hell vibe than the three great duos of our time: The White Stripes, Lighting Bolt and Simon and Garfunkel, but putting the greatest hits of all three in a blender and drinking them down in one would have the same disorienting effect.

Scotsman- Under The Radar Review

Bronto Skylift
T Break Stage, 8.20pm

Confounding all logic, Glasgow two-piece noise rockers Bronto Skylift somehow manage to be the loudest band to grace the T Break tent all weekend. On stage, the secrets behind Bronto's massive wall of sound are revealed quickly enough, with frontman Niall Strachan jacking into no less than four amps at the same time and wielding an impressive array of pedals.

It's all too much for some people to take, with a few casualties staggering out clutching their ears as Iain Stewart's snare drum hits reached ear-splitting levels. Those who do stay, however, are rewarded with a breathtaking set and an impromptu jam session with the band, as Strachan takes his guitar into the crowd to close the show, paying no heed to minor details like instrument cables and panicking stewards. On the radar: Bronto Skylift

Bronto Skylift

Play: Danny Glover Isn't Dead
..

Rockstars aren't known for having a firm grasp of mathematics. Perhaps that's why, every now and then, one of the simple equations of music fails to balance: to get a bigger sound, you need more musicians, right?

Wrong. Over the last few years, a succession of two-piece acts, from Rhode Island's Lightning Bolt to venerable Norwegian black metal crust punks (no, really) Darkthrone, have defied convention to prove that a drumkit and a single guitar can make all the noise you'll ever need.

Bronto Skylift, Glasgow's own two-pronged noisemongers, are reluctant to shed light on the eldritch mysteries surrounding how such a small ensemble manages to create such a huge racket. "We could never reveal our secrets!" laughs guitarist and vocalist Niall Strachan. "I think it's a combination of Iain hitting the drums really hard and me hitting my guitar really hard and brushing our teeth three times a day!"

Originally hailing from the north - Strachan is from Inverness while drummer Iain Stewart has roots in Orkney - Bronto Skylift formed in Glasgow in early 2007, quickly earning a reputation as energetic live perfomers. Though the band originally featured a bassist, three soon became two, and Strachan and Stewart have carried on as a duo ever since.

The Bronto Skylift sound is difficult to pinpoint, but there's nothing wrong with that, the band say. "The music maybe sounds familiar," says Strachan, sagely, "but at the same time you can't put your finger on it."

Falling somewhere in the nexus between grunge, sludge and noise rock, Bronto's songs are laden with driving, jagged riffs with plenty of opportunity for Stewart to demonstrate his virtuoso drumming skills. A comparison with Lightning Bolt is certainly valid, though Bronto's brand of noise is perhaps a little less chaotic and a bit more focused.

Bronto SkyliftLike a few of UtR's recent favourites, including Hey Vampires and The Whisky Works, Bronto Skylift are full of praise for Glasgow's emerging punk and grunge scene. "There's a great community of bands at the moment, giving each other help and support but all ploughing their own paths," enthuses Strachan, who also acknowledges a musical sea-change in a city previously dominated by indie and acoustic acts. "There seems to be a move away from the twee stuff going about the past few years towards a heavier, more crunchy type of music," he muses.

Summer 2009 is set to be very busy indeed for Bronto Skylift. As well as landing a prestigious Saturday night slot on the T Break stage at T in the Park, the guys will also play at the Wickerman Festival in Dumfries at the end of July and have a spate of other shows lined up across Scotland. They're also recording new material when the opportunity arises and may just be seeking a label to release it on in the near future.

Proving once again that maths and music make for uneasy bedfellows, Bronto Skylift are definitely more than the sum of their parts.

GONORTH/ROCKNESS: WHAT IS THIS?

So last Thursday morning ourselves and United Fruit and Peter and MalkB all loaded into a couple of cars at the hour of 9am (ish) and drove up to Inverness to commence the madness that was last weekend. What follows is all TRUTH..though some names may be changed to protect the innocent.

THURSDAY

It really came as no surprise to anyone involved that it was Niall who held things up in the morning. This was probobly down to the fact that he was still halfcut from the night before(thanks to Malky,Craig,Sarah)
Gear was thrown into bags, clothes into bin bags (classy) and the bronto/fruit convoy set off to inverness. What insued was a journey full of warmth, banter and people nearly being sick (or pissing themselves) We stopped in Carrbridge so people wouldnt piss themselves.

Then we pushed onto the sneck to register at the Ironworks which is a pretty amazing venue by the way.Stu thought that fruit would do a crap show cause he was having a bad hair day but Niall reassured him he was rocking the fro thug syle yes.
We went to The Room for lunch...met some nice people and gave them a flyer for our showcase at the Market Bar.
The food was good.We felt human again

Iain went and saw his family, as did Niall and the fruit hung out in town and Marcin forced them all to get high on coffee.Which they did. This is where we met up with the Hey Enemy boys.
Went back into town after a bit and Malky + Pete did some flyering cause Niall and Iain are pretty useless at doing it to be honest! Chatted to quite a few people in Hoots and saw Vcheka for the first time and they were pretty awesome...if ye get the chance check them out!

Then loaded into the Market Bar which is easily the smallest live music venue in the world and it also rocks! To be honest we didn't expect many more than 20 people to show up but the place was full! Total mental gig...the crowd reaction to every song really blew us away. After shaking hands and selling merch and packing up we all decamped to Hoots where Fruit were in full flight and kicking ass(as usual)
Heard the new song that Stu sings and it was sweet.Forget the name.

It was then onto the Ironworks for an aftershow party/gig thingy which was nice to chill out and chat to some folks but to be honest us/fruit/hey enemy were all wiped after our gigs that we headed out to Tracy's to all stay in her mansion.Yeah Mansion...no word of a lie.It has like a lift and everything! Thanks to Tracy and her family for putting us all up :) But yeah like we only get 3 hours sleep so the next morning Niall can't speak and bronto have their biggest show to date at Rockness! Fair to say Niall was a bit worried....

FRIDAY

Everyone was tired but in good spirits as Tracy's mum had made us all chilli con carne so we dined like kings before going to bed. Yeah so Niall held things up again in the morning cause thats his style (beard grooming is time consuming ok?) Whilst this groomerery was going on everyone else was out on the lawn playing football.Stu realised he wasn't as fit as he used to be.He wants to witness the fitness again
Said goodbye to United Fruit who were travelling back to Glasgow and Hey Enemy who were off to the campsite and we loaded up 2 cars.
Tracy took her and emma and malky and all the gear in her car to rockness and niall, iain and peter went with kim who dropped them off at the bus station to get a bus out to the festival.
What happened next was classic.Instead of getting on the proper Rockness shuttle bus Iain got us on the normal wee Dores bus  and it was quarter of the price...only took 15mins and had some nice ladies who wished us well.I reckon we were the only band to take the Dores bus to Rockness.....

We then had to go and register and hang around for a while in the baking heat before getting a lift to the gonorth stage. There was a bit of confusion though as we waited over an hour for a 30sec car ride...got dropped off at the Bollywood tent. doh! so it was back in the people carrier and up to the tent we were playing. If anyone has seen the Flight of Conchords episode when they do the tour of New Zealand Town you'll know how we felt!

The goNorth tent was pretty cool and it was amazing to walk into the tent and see the stage setup exactly the way we need. This was due to Niall's amazing, intricate stage plan which actually took 15secs to draw...the stage crew found it endearing and in a world where everyone is trying to be professional it's refreshing to know that stickmen sketches can get a point across :)
Soundcheck was a beast...the soundguys were really experienced and Niall got to use one his dream bits of gear (Fender Hot Rod Deville) and the kit was good enough for Iain to destroy (one gig soon iain's foot will through drum head..just you wait)
Malky was being a total champ and spreading the word about our gig whilst haggis and stovies were consumed (awesome taste..£6 though)
Peter,Tracy and Emma had been away sorting out the tent on the campsite and they hooked up with Claire and all that lot and everyone chilled outside gonorth tent.
It must be noted at this point Niall could not speak so a mission was undertaken to source honey and tea and Sarah at artist liason got this and pretty much saved the day.Good work!

Ok so the honey only worked for a wee bit and with 10mins till stage time drastic measures had to be taken...cue mad dash to the whiskey tent and a large shot of Talisker!  The whiskey works :)

So there were lots of people outside the tent when we went onstage and Malky took it upon himself to introduce us. We didnt get this on film but it was a moment of ace compering...  "ROCKNESS!! Please welcome Bronto Skylift!"
It was prob the loudest thing at the festival and 70 people instantly bolted into the tent with the number more than doubling after a couple of songs (150-170 is a pretty good guestimate)

The respose was pretty overwhelming to be honest.People were hardcore dancing to Tiger, singing along to Hekla, dancing to Cobblepot.Yeah pretty insane and it was one of the best moments in Bronto's history to date. Like, the dudes down the front on the barrier were going mental the whole gig and chanting and pogoing.Ace :)

AFTERMATH

Post gig and Iain + Malky had to get to Perth as a forest that is silent was needing helpy helpy! This left team bronto as; Niall,Peter,Tracy,Emma,Claire,Alana,Ally,Swain,Jilly,Weaver,Keiba,Mike,Grant and Ruaridh (and dad!).Hooked up with Ryan on the saturday and got pretty jiggy with the fizzy.

The rest of the weekend was spent drinking one or two beers, copious amounts of green tea and getting the banter with everyone who wanted it.

Special thanks to the artist liason folks (Ruth,Sarah,Angela,Julie + Laura!) for being a huge help all weekend :)

Catchprases from our Rockness experience

"What is this?"

"Were not talking about it"

"When am I taking you to the chocolate factory?"

"Aye very good"

"You can't drink in Myspace"

This is what Weaver named everyone camping (one of his many moments of genius...if you see him...buy him a drink and witness the universe unfurl)
