Category: Music Beat Boys' final bowLeigh Journal - 11:26am Wednesday 23rd September 2009 written by Brian Gomm.
LEIGH’S best known band, The Beat Boys, have taken their final bow after 50 years of rocking. They played their last ever concert at the launch of a fund raising DVD cataloguing the history of the group at Leigh Miners’ Club. And the jiving fans were as happy as always as they took to the dance floor. The fabulous five hit the stage with their evergreen opener “Lucille” and closed a lifetime of memories with Ray Charles’ “What’d I Say”. Bass guitarist and leader Ronnie Carr, who is responsible for the comprehensive biographical DVD, Keith Wright (lead guitarist) , Gordon Urmston (drums), Alan Parkinson (vocals and harmonica) and Bernard Southern (lead guitar) packed away their instruments for the last time together. Ronnie said: “We have always been a happy band. It was a real laugh. One of the amps went off and the electrics went a bit wobbly but I just kicked things and it was right. “It was great doing that show on Friday when for the first time we stood there and realised that’s it.” The show ended the unveiling of the DVD The Life and Times, which opens the group’s scrapbook to their many fans. The 50th anniversary film, devised and researched by Ronnie and directed by Chris Miller contains live footage of the group, interviews and photographs and memories from 1956-2010. It also features the live music of If, Goliath, The Les Humphries Singers, Screamin’ Jay Jawkins, Georgie Fame, The Animals, The Rolling Stones, The Hollies, The Magic Lanters and more. Copies of the DVD can be ordered from Ronnie at £6 ( including post and package) on 01942 747663 - or from the Leigh Journal Office for £5.

Cheers Stan!
Well, well, well, It's 2009 kids and pop is back. Forget about the do-re-mi and let's show some respect to the Mersey/Manchester beat of the 60's cavern/twisted wheel beat boy era! Ever heard of THE BEAT BOYS?
THE LIFE & TIMES OF THE BEAT BOYS by UKFM (2009)
dvd/video - 60 mins Colour/Bw - featuring:
THE BEAT BOYS, RONNIE CARR, IAN MONCUR, GEORGIE FAME, SCREAMIN' JAY HAWKINS, THE MAGIC LANTERNS, JOHNNY HODGKINSON, MEMPKIS SLIM, GENE VINCENT, TONY ALLEN, THE RATS, THE LES HUMPHRIES SINGERS, GOLIATH, THE ANIMALS, THE ROLLING STONES, THE HOLLIES, RORY BLACKWELL, JOE MEEK and MANY MORE
WHY? Because kids they, you, we got it all wrong as manufactured bands were everywhere, even then! And the 'real deal' was often swept well under the underground carpet. The film starts in '57 and the rise of British skiffle and shows a glimpse of the the rise of quite a few major pop stars. It's a humble and true story and one we at UKFM are proud to archive for the first time in British rock 'n' roll history. The one hour film is available from September 18th and proceeds go to a Leigh charity.
It's funny, it's honest, it's gritty. It's the fringe rock explosion that never really happened. Apart from the obvious and a few American stars who allow the story to have a true bearing. It's local (like auntie maggie remedy.) It's magic, like Jay Hawkins on Burtonwood mild! come on it's the real rock deal cock!
Forget what you've read as these guys were all locals. It's a homemade film for homemade people. This music is in the heart, but sadly not in the jukebox these days. So feel very priviliged to have found this link, you have discovered a completely lost musical archive file which coincides and interacts with the core of the British beat Boom! Forget the Beatles and The Stones for sixty god damn minutes please! PAUSE And discover what was happening before and after their set was well finished! GET IT?
p,s) All the best and thanks to D.J. Stan @ UKFM LONDON for running the shop whilst i've been busy clipping film and rocking the baby! UKFM has a heir! TAKK! TAKK!

Now then!
Chris is away on maternity, sorry chief, paternity leave and I've been roped into maintaining this page or "help us out a bit as he put it" (ever the king of the understatement). We all know what a control freak he is without his medication. So don't panic he's still here watching us.Can you feel him? I can.Children can be so selfish, makes me glad I was sterilized in that chemical spill I was paid so handsomely not to ever mention.Rather unlike this job, fun don't feed the gerbils Chris.
Kids love
Stan x
