Maya29....

Definitely a prog vibe going on here and the Egyptian/Eastern vibes in your first track are a good addition as they add mysticism to the proceedings. The vocals aren't strained either, and they fit well, which is good. The production job is nice. I really like the meandering vocals at the beginning of the second song too (Tonali) - just adds a mystic vibe to it, it's quite hypnotic. I like the guitars in this too, as their chimy effect is interesting to listen to. This is possibly your best song in my books just because it's mesmerising and keeps you listening to see which new direction the music takes. The Journey of Gods has a different vibe to the other songs, not being quite so proggy, maybe even a little more poppy in places than your other songs. Overall, it's a nice sounding EP; Well done!

Maya29 - thisisnotforyou
(demo)
Maya29 are a two-piece act whose three track demo is a remarkable slice of assured prog metal. Taking in elements of Tool, they manage nevertheless to craft their own sound thanks primarily to Karen Bradford's vocals.
The songs featured here are as impressive as the erotic novel from which they've swiped their name, and if it wasn't for the fact that it's the lowest common denominator that sells in this country, I'd predict big things for them.

The plan in January was to play at least 2 gigs each month and there was plenty of renewed enthusiasm in the band.  I am delighted to say that even at this point (July 2009) we have actually played more gigs than we did in the whole of 2008!
As ever - nothing goes to plan, but last night we played our full and complete set and it felt good.

Progress is slow for the live performance aspect of the new material, however, we remain optimistic.  In putting the finishing touches to the recording, we are a step forward for the connecting spoken pieces we have for some of the tracks.
Not wanting to use our own voices, a poet and a gentleman has offered his services.  He has a wonderful North American accent and is skilled in the art of reciting his own poetry with enviable ability. We hope to hear the first sample MP3s this month and all being well, that will be that. Once that is done, we shall throw ourselves into a hive of activity in getting the new work on here, out there, everywhere and uploaded wherever we can for review and your listening pleasure.

More updates soon ..............

So we got together for practice on Tuesday ready for the gig last night with Starry Wisdom in Perth. It's hard to believe that 6 months has gone by since our last gig! 6 months! OK, so much has happened in that time and somewhere in the mix there was a wedding, new jobs and lots of recording going on, so it's not unreasonable I suppose.

Last night was a gentle and very positive slide back into being a performing band and it was an excellent reminder for me of why I do this.  Mucky's is well known as a live music venue and it was so good to meet people who were simply there to check out the bands.  They didn't know any of us and I'm relieved to say they stayed :)

Starry Wisdom have been around for about the same length of time as Maya29 and they have developed a good and supportive audience in Perth and it was good to see them there last night.

Joe was up for the weekend taking special care of Nick, so she was there too and all in all it was an excellent kick start to getting the gigging boots on again.

The aim is to play twice each month to keep existing material shiny and in the practice room we will work on getting the new material tight.

Hope your 2009 has started well too and see you at a gig sometime somewhere  x

So there are 7 songs and some of the songs have seperate and distinct parts, so maybe there are more than 7

The songs all have a singe and related theme and Jon and I confess that this is the best material we have ever been involved in writing!

The band has had a couple of listening sessions and many hours will be spent in the basement once we start working it all out and learning the songs as a 4 piece.

We are currently considering different ways to get the music out there.  Free download is certainly one option.

So, much learning and playing to do.

When Mark is back from his honeymoon, much sweating will be done!

Taster track uploads will happen here soon.

Collaboration with photographer

I responded to a Gumtree listing which said -"Seeking songwriters for collaboration with photographer."

Rowan is a photography student and has a particular interest in the relationship between lyrics, music and imagery. We are working with her as she is preparing to exhibit. The exhibition will show one photograph which represents the song, underneath the photograph will be an audio link and some headphones in order to hear the song and underneath that will be the lyrics to the song.

We have chosen Akhaisha, and met last week and spent a few hours looking at the whole concept of making quite a complex song and indeed a complex issue become one image.

Rowan will be using one of the studios at Napier and it will be very much a still life setting and working on what will be in that photograph is an exciting process. Rowan has some excellent ideas and I can't wait to see the end result! Her photograph will find a home here when it's done

Yay! Finally we are recording in the basement!  It’s dry, warm and working very well.  Jon has done a fabulous job with organising all the gear to give a real studio feel.  He’s also performed some magicks setting drum mics for Mark and based on the results from this week, there is very little overspill from the rest of us and the recorded sound from Mark’s kit is spot on.  Bass parts are going down as I type and random high volume expletives by the sound of it! :)  Nick will be layering guitar parts this week I hope and last, but certainly not least, vocals.

We are also really chuffed that Starry Wisdom Cult now have Chris, their new bass player and they will be working with Jon to get their three track promo recorded and mixed ready for some radio time they have secured.

It’s all good and there will be more updates soon about a new song which comes in at eight and a half minutes!  Prog on!

Anti-Valentine 2008 – Friday 15th February – The Ark – Waterloo Place - Edinburgh

It was great to see so many people at the gig last night at The Ark. It was one of the busier nights we have played there and there was lots of banter.

Nick got a supportive hug from another guitarist when he broke a string. It was a moving moment and we played the 10 song while he sorted it.

Thank you for coming along and hope you enjoyed having Juicy Lips thrown at you during the set in a traditional Anti-Valentine fashion.

Chris was experimenting with a new recording toy, so I'm hoping he got some good results with that.

Hello Jill! You were a Maya29 virgin and now you are not! Glad you could make it and hope to see you at other gigs. Remember - running, speedway and the Bike Show. I'll email the dates.

It was Jo's first gig too (if we don't count the basement party) and we hope you had a good night as there will be lots more of that if you hang around with the guitarist bloke.

We talked to some fab people outside and it turns out that we know Paul from the days of Jewel & Esk!

The Ark is a lovely venue and I hear there is an Iron Maiden Tribute band there very soon. A party night is being planned as I type. Mullets of the world unite!!

I'm off to get some more gig dates lined up. Thanks everyone for making it a good night, even though the set was a short one. There's more where that came from.

 Keep you posted – K & Co.  x

Karen and Jon moved house late summer and the band now has a home! We are renting an old house with a basement and the basement is where the work has been going on. We've been busy using freecyle and gumtree and we've got oursleves a PA, loads of carpet, mic stands, pa speakers and stands and fairy lights on the wall :) There's a poster of Lemmy somewhere too.

We worked very hard on the move and setting up the new place, so gigging has unfortunately taken a back seat since October. So to set the record straight, we plan to have a busy year both gigging and recording and we also have new material to work with too.

We finally got round to our housewarming party in December and the basement made a pretty cool venue for some of the night and it was excellent to see Andy (Mark's Brother) play guitar and Big Mark rocked the whole neighbourhood when he played drums! The Starry Wisdom Cult came along and it was good to see Ross up and about. We met Jo for the first time and Mark and Nathalie were sharing news about their wedding plans! Congratulations x x

Robin entertained everyone for hours and we discovered that we share the love for the Mighty Boosh and bragged endlessly to anyone and everyone about our tickets for the live show in September.

Nick and Rona drank from the magic blue goblet and rescued the stovies! Thank you !  and Nathan was the bringer of the Pringles!  We met loads of new neighbours and they were just lovely and bought housewarming wishes, wine and plenty of stories about the local area.  One wonderful person bought a massive box of Jaffa Cakes!

It was a great night and we plan on doing it again, so if you missed that one, there will be others. Thanks to everyone who came along to help make is special.  Thanks for joining in with The Timewarp! and hope you all have a very happy, safe, successful and healthy 2008. Peace x

Hello summer!  Well.........kind of.  One thing that has been good so far is that Seamy, Jonny and Darren (A Little Bitter) came over from Ireland to play two shows with us in Scotland.  The Retreat in Perth broke their "out of Ireland" virginity on Friday and then it was onto Livingston Football stadium to play the Nitespot all dayer yesterday.  A Little Bitter sold albums, made friends and played like demons and it was an absolute delight to be their gig buddies again for the weekend.  Next time, all being well, and if our house move goes to plan, we will even have enough floor space for them to stay with us and they can spend the hotel money on beer instead!   I'm sure that idea will be welcomed.

We have plans to go back to Ireland and hope to play Belfast again.  Jonny also suggested Dublin, which is an excellent idea!

It might be possible for A Little Bitter to come back to Scotland in August and we are putting some plans in place to make that happen.  Three gigs in a row would be excellent fun and it's looking likely.

So thank you for the music, the great shows and of course for the craic!

See you soon!  x

Maya29 – first shows in Ireland

We experienced some magic at the weekend and it happened in Northern Ireland.

Jon (Maya29 bass player) and Seamy (A Little Bitter bass player) got chatting about bass guitars and Rush on a popular forum that you might know.  One thing led to another and before I could turn around, Seamy had two gigs sorted for us to go and join them in Derry and in Belfast!!

So thank you Jon and Seamy for starting something that we all enjoyed tremendously.  In July, A Little Bitter will join us in Scotland to play two gigs in return.  If all goes well, this could happen again perhaps?  We would love it to.

Friday 18th May Karen, Jon Mark and Nick meet at Mark's and set off in the ( rather unreliable at the moment) Pug fully loaded with instruments, maps, toothbrushes and a bag of enthusiasm and anticipation too. The Pug is not good with cold starts at the moment.  Once she warms up then everything is fine, but cold starts and stalling is becoming a problem.  We all had our fingers crossed and fortunately we got there and back again just fine, a bit spluttery, but fine.

The ferry was on time and we had a good crossing to Belfast.  Karen drove around Belfast once before finding the right road to Derry.  (just for luck she reckons) and they were on their way.  Approximately 75 miles later, we arrived at our accommodation for the night.  The Iona Inn – Derry was warm and friendly, with hot showers waiting.  We needed to get to the venue for around 9ish and we were due to start our set at around 10.30pm. After a gorgeous takeaway plaice and chips from along the road we set off.   Bound for Boston is a lovely venue with a good mix of customers and is well known as a rock venue, so that explains the high concentration of appreciative audience members.

Bound for Boston

The sound was good, the stage was spacious and the people friendly.  We have been encouraged to go back again, so I think they liked us.  We made a decision beforehand to play a completely different set each night.  Our set for Friday was…….Tonali, Neck, Head, Elysium, Breathing, Monkeys, Journey of Gods and our favourite closer – Akhaisha.

A Little Bitter worked hard for this gig as they provided full backline and organised the PA and sound too!  They have their own rig and will set up anywhere and everywhere!  We played well and there was not much in between songs banter, but we were on form and all enjoyed the night.  Thank you A Little Bitter for doing a fine job and thank you for letting me pretend to be the sound engineer for your set.  I think I was convincing.  We had previously only heard A Little Bitter from their recordings and it was excellent to see their live set. They are energetic, tight, they have very good songs with interesting arrangements and are very nice people indeed.  We felt welcome and we were in great company. Our fist impression of Northern Ireland will stay with us and it was a warm, welcoming one with a very healthy rock scene. We took it easy after the gig and enjoyed a 2am bed time to get enough sleep for the gig the next day.

The Limelight – Belfast

We negotiated a diversion and got into Belfast with time to spare.  After arriving at The Limelight we dropped our instruments and headed off to check into the amazing value for money – Paddy's Palace.

The gig had originally been planned for Katy Daly's and fortunately for us, was moved into the Limelight, which was a fantastic opportunity for us to play a great quality venue with a powerful PA.  Our set was………Bitter, Below the Salt, Stupid Little Question, Belovodia, Omega, Under Side View, Colour of Skin, Undivided and closed again with Akhaisha.

Hello to Tommy and Karen (Twisted Sister child of '72) and everyone else we met and talked with and shared drinks with.  Jon found some graffiti in the toilets which read "oh my god, they all want sweets!"  Fortunately for us, we had lots of sweets and proceeded to share lots of little packets of juicy lips with everyone and anyone including the sound man, who worked hard and helped us to sound better than we have in a while.

At the end of the show, there was much hugging and story telling and we received some excellent advice on how to spend the rest of the evening.  Off we went to Auntie Annie's on Dublin Road to sample the local brew and play a random "name that band" game until the early hours.

We had a decent sleep and made our way home today looking forward to July when A Little Bitter join us in Scotland.

Why?  Because we can.  Do it again?  Hell yeah!!
