David Bernabo + Assembly feature some of the coolest album artwork you ever see; their new body of work, Happener-Magicker is on an even par. Two years in the making, it's a cyclonic mix of pop, jazz, rock, and even a bit of modern classical. Some of work on the new album detours into the music of Frank Zappa, Eberhard Weber, and Marvin Gaye to name a few. If the need to hear something totally different is tugging at you, this is at the end of the string. Also highly recommended.

Some quick Assembly-related news items.

TWO SHOWS

Friday/Tonight Nov 27 @ Waffle Shop - VOCAL ASSEMBLY vs. SHAMBOLISH
10PM, Free
The all-vocal Vocal Assembly battles the gameboy/keys/drums trio of Shambolish in the game of scoring Youtube videos.  What kind of videos can you expect? I would guess Star Trek, Riverdance, and some sort of hippie-pilgram happening.  If you want to take a guess, you should guess what I guess since I already know some of the answers.

Saturday Nov 28 @ Brillobox - ASSEMBLY with PAIRDOWN, EMILY RODGERS, & THEE SHOPKEEPERS
for The New Yinzer's Pittsburgh Harvest!
8PM, $5
Assembly, the rock band, returns with a new tune and some golden favorites.  Happener-Magicker LPs will be available.

Friday Dec 4 @ The Nerve THE OUTER CIRCLE
8pm, $5
The Outer Circle is a new Pittsburgh-based composer/performer ensemble.  We'll be doing some originals, some Stockhausen, some Pauline Oliveros, and some more originals.  This is our first show, and should be cool.

Sunday Dec 13 @ ModernFormations Gallery DAVID BERNABO with many others for the WINTER VOID 2 FEST
4PM, $6-8
I will be playing a solo set of some type at this festival with a ton of great acts. More info: http://board.nevertellmetheodds.org/t.php?id=96920&r=53

BLOG AND CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

I am currently working on a lot of projects: Nintendo music, DJ Responsibility and "classical" albums, but one of my favorite projects is a new blog and a feature called Assembly Radio.   www.plusassembly.com/blog  This "radio" program presents about 10-15 minutes of music, sounds, and spoken texts from local and national artists.  I currently have Editions 01 and 02 up and they feature some great folks: Ravish Momin (NYC), Nikki Allen, Matt Griffin, Jack Wilson, and drugdealer.  Please check it out and if you have any compositions, recordings, poems, etc that you would like to submit for the project, please shoot me an e-mail.  I'll be pretty picky, but that is probably a good thing.

Also, check out www.plusassembly.com for a free download of Happener-Magicker, the new lp/cd by Assembly.  I never like paying for downloaded music (always prefer to have a physical copy), so we made the download free.  If you like the record and want to support us (or hate it but still want to support us), feel free to buy the vinyl (a couple white vinyl copies left), the cdr, or paypal or download via iTunes or Other Music (NYC).  Feel free to spread the word on the free download/preview.  It will make a great/creepy holiday gift for your loved or unloved one.

Thanks,
Dave

Assembly Radio, Edition 01

So, I started a type of "radio" - taking inspiration from Aspen Magazine and WDR, I am going to put together a 10-15 minute radio program combining new musical pieces, spoken words/texts, interviews, field recoridngs, and other things that I can find.  I will post a new edition every two weeks.

The first edition features:

Ravish Momin
, a NYC percussionist that you may have seen at Eden's Radical Riffs series.  The piece he contributed is brand new and unreleased.  I think it features one of his trios warped through electronics and processing.  A very enjoyable piece.

Nikki Allen, a Pittsburgh poet.  Reading a great poem from her book, quite like yes.

Matt Griffin, of Early Day Miners, OIO, and Architecture fame, discussing letterpress and the class he teaches at CMU.

and since this is the first edition and I wanted to balance out the speaking with another music piece, I ended the program with a new piano and electronics piece that I am working on.  I am in the process of turning this into a piece for triple trio, but at the moment, I have a piano+electronics version that was recorded last Saturday.

Hope you like it.  RSS feeds will be coming soon.  Thanks.
ps. if you'd like to submit anything, please do d.bernabo (at) yahoo.com

The album comes in three formats: vinyl, cdr, and digital download.  The vinyl is very nice: full-color jacket with amazing art by Owl Kahol, full lyric and credit insert, and a secret message with a link for a free high quality download.  On top of that, the vinyl-download includes a bonus song featuring a piano solo by yours truly and a vocal quintet piece by Vocal Assembly (http://www.openthread.org/OTQ2009Summer/dbernabo.html#).  If that was not enough. we have 100 copies of beautiful white vinyl!!! However, we're down to about 40 - so get them right quick.

How, you ask?

Easy: go to http://www.sortofrecords.bigcartel.com and order your copy.

Coming up, Assembly will be playing with Mikael (from Wilco) new project Pronto at Brillobox, Sept 15.  Sure to be an amazing show! Show up early!

In other news, the vocal quintet called Vocal Assembly received a great write-up with audio and visual samples over at Open Thread Quarterly: http://www.openthread.org/OTQ2009Summer/dbernabo.html#

And the second pressing of the ever-popular Nathan Hall + David Bernabo duo disc is just coming in.  Go ahead and order your copy here: http://www.sortofrecords.bigcartel.com/product/nathan-hall-david-bernabo

Thanks to everyone that made the release show a truly wonderful evening! So much talent in Pittsburgh - we hope to continue the mixed media events.

from Pgh Tribune Review:
Music: Working his 'Magick'

Composer and multi-instrumentalist David Bernabo has long been a fixture in many of Pittsburgh's most exciting and forward-thinking bands -- Boxstep, Vale & Year, Ninth Ward.

As a measure of how highly he's regarded on the local scene, it seems like everybody has come out to play a part in Bernabo's new Assembly album, "Happener-Magicker." A crew of 25 local musicians -- including vocals from Julie Sokolow and guitar from Daryl Fleming -- support the project, which draws from near-impossible extremes of progressive rock, indie pop, Steely Dan-inflected jazz-rock and ideas from modern classical composition.

David Bernabo & Assembly will have a release party for "Happener-Magicker" at 8 p.m. Saturday at Brillobox in Bloomfield, with openers Meeting of Important People. The event is a collaboration with Incredibly Thin, and will feature films, readings and art. Admission is $5.

Assembly required

• The 25-piece David Bernabo + Assembly -- a concoction of pop, jazz-rock and modern classical -- will release "Happener-Magicker" with a show at the Brillobox in Bloomfield on Saturday.

Bernabo says of the project, which is more than two years in the making, "It is definitely the most rock thing I've done, but also includes some more harmonically complex writing."

The 25-piece Assembly includes Julie Sokolow (Western Vinyl), Will Dyar (ex-Oakley Hall), and the core Assembly live band of guitarist Daniel Gene Newman II, drummer Owl Barns and saxophonist Brandon Masterman.

Meeting of Important People will open this show, and there will be readings by Deejay Brewer, Lori Jakiela, Matthew Newton, David V. Matthews and Omar White and films by Gordon Nelson, Thad Kellstadt, Dina Bernabo, Rebbyro and David Bernabo.

It begins at 9 p.m. Tickets are $5.
