Current mood:  contemplative
Here are some things to consider when thinking about democracy, the United States, and the state of the world. In the tragedy of 9/11 about 3,000 people died. No doubt, it was a horrible event. Now consider that every day over 20,000 people die from starvation (UN statistic). Meanwhile, 1/3 of people in the U.S. fight obesity. Along the same lines, every minute 30 children die of hunger and inadequate healthcare, while the world spends $1,700,000 on war.

Is this a democracy? Is this the world we vote for? Do we really have a voice? Who controls the elections in a so called democratic country? I encourage people to look for answers themselves and to use several sources including several which are not mainstream.

In the US, the government continues to spend close to a trillion dollars each year on the military budget, even though the US has been the most heavily armed country in the world and the world's biggest weapons dealer for years!

I also wonder where democracy comes in with regard to who owns resources, the treasures of the earth. In some unreleased lyrics I detail the situation "In a system where food, water, and land has a price/One day they'll charge you just to breathe the air in your life/It's the price of not fightin the elite/we gettin beat/it's our water, our food, our land, our street/they tell us they own it - then they tell us to vote/but takin action in the street and not votin's my hope/on the whole we never vote - or get to take a poll/on the force they used to take resources they stole."

In other words, who voted on who got the right to own water, food, and land and who can profit off it while everyone else pays? Don't these resouces come from the earth and belong to all the earth's people and not just multinational corporations like Nestle, Deer Park, Hershey, and others that get rich from them? (By the way, the 5 major labels in hip hop - yes there are only 5 major labels - are all owned by multinational corporations, which if you think about it explains a lot about mainstream hip hop.)

Many people are currently putting all of their faith in Obama, but Obama has not changed the grim reality we have faced for hundreds of years. He has also continued the war in Afghanistan that Bush began. On top of that, he is ultimately responsible for dropping bombs on Pakistan with drones which have killed many innocent civilians. While he represents a blow to bigotry, he has not changed poverty and other crucial issues in the US. When you get to the root of it, it's not about Bush or Obama; the president is not the sole force running the country, but rather the face of a government and a system. In this system, 1% of the world's people own 2/3 of the world's resources.

What all of this exemplifies to me is the reason people like me say "Power to the People." We oppose the current system of power held by the 1% of people known as the greedy ruling class elite. It also represents just how much this 1% DO NOT want equality.

In other words, the mainstream politicians have clearly demonstrated that they don't represent the people, because we want equality and justice, and they refuse to give us this type of equality and empowerment.

In a democracy, the elected government is supposed to represent the people's interests. If they don't.... and the people really want a democracy and a REAL say over what happens in this world... then we have to fight for it. We need to think less about elections, and more about organizing and taking part in direct actions like the freedom rides, sit ins, strikes for the 8 hour workday, union organizing, Harriet Tubbman, economic boycotts, building occupations, walkouts, etc. In other words we need to make our voices heard in whatever way possible. I know A LOT of people and organizations putting the work in to make our voices heard. In fact, I listed a lot of them and their contact information inside my latest CD "Tha People's Music."

Charity is not the answer to our problems either. Dr King said "Philanthropy is admirable but it is problematic when it doesn't address the root causes that make philanthropy necessary."

Additionally, religion is too often an opiate (sedative) for the masses. Dr. King was not one to just "leave it all up to God," and he said, "Any religion that professes to be concerned with the souls of men and is not concerned with the slums that damn them, the economic conditions that strangle them, and the social conditions that cripple them is a dry-as-dust religion."

I'm not one to put all my hope in charity, which is too often a band aid for gaping wounds. The type of efforts we need require dedication, sacrifice, and patience. We can't give up or be satisfied with relinquishing our power to the elite. That is not a democracy. When people speak of democracy let them know about what a democracy really is.  We can't be fooled by what the politicians and mainstream media tell us about democracy in the world. Whatever you do in the struggle for true democracy make your voice heard! As Fredrick Douglas said, "Without struggle there is no progress." Voting and having blind faith in what we are told since we are children in the United States about democracy are not going to help those 20,000 people dying each day from hunger.

Power to the People!

A change was made in the 2008 election. The precedent of having some diversity in the office of president in the white house (which was built by African slaves) was LOOONG overdue!

This is a step in the right direction. Change does come very slowly. Many people thought a man who identified as Black in any way (Obama has indicated he identifies as both Black and White) could NEVER be elected President in the US!
Now that this precedent has been set, I hope people can start paying more attention to the issues as we move into the future. Obama does offer hope and he offers a historical, symbolic change. Obama surely is preferable to McCain. However, over time, people will inevitably come to ask if Obama will change these ten prominent issues

Poverty - Obama's plan to solve poverty (from his own website) is to raise minimum wage to $9.50 by the year 2011. Could you feed a family or even yourself on that? In the richest country in the world wealth is concentrated in a greedy 1% who own mulitiple houses and cars while working class and poor people struggle to afford food and shelter. We need LIVEABLE wages.

2 The Media - The media are conglomerates run by rich people who profit off of keeping the poor poor while the rich get richer. The corporation GE (General Electric) owns NBC, MSNBC, The History Channel, and more. Rupert Murdoch of Fox News, and the Disney/ABC/ESPN Conglomerate basically own the rest. The voice of the poor and oppressed is not heard in the rich agenda of what they consider news (for real news: DemocracyNow.Org, SleptOn.Com)

Foreign Policy - 700 Billion dollars a year or more is spent on military spending. This money is not spent to protect an invasion on US land by another country, but to add more land and resources to the control of the US Empire. Half of this spending could give Universal Healthcare to all citizens of the US. The interference of the US military abroad also makes other countries hate the US and makes this country far less secure. Security means getting out of other countries lands and paying them reparations for the damage the US has caused

4 Healthcare - In the US if you cannot afford your medical bills when you go to the hospital you will die. 50 million American have no healthcare b/c they cannot afford it. Or, if you get sick you will go so far in debt that you'll lose your house and end up working three jobs. In Canada, Europe, and Cuba you do not pay for healthcare. This needs to happen here! Even if you have healthcare your plan offer won't cover you when you need it, because they lose profits that way. See the movie Sicko by Michael Moore to learn more.

5 Education - Like healthcare, higher (college) education is provided free of charge in other countries. Also, in a democracy schools should be equal. However, if you go to school in the city, you find the schools have FAR less resources than the schools in the suburbs. Kids graduate college $100,000 in debt with student loans here and esentially become indebted servants to credit card companies (who are comparable to organized crime loan sharks). Meanwhile, the rich send their kids to better schools and their kids do not have debt from college student loans. The rich also often avoid military service because they have more options in the US.

6 Bigotry - I would like to hear Obama speak up against the bigotry shown toward Arabs, Muslims, and other groups. He certainly stands up for Christians and Jews. Are Arabs not human as well? I'd also like to see him fight for equality for gays. On the day he was elected, gay marriage was banned in California. Why should the government care who people choose to sleep with?

Perception of History - Our current issues come from a history that is not widely known or taught in the US. We need to talk about how this country was founded and built on the backs of Native American and African genocide and exploitation of sweat shop labor in and out of the US. These are things I would love to hear Obama talk about. I hope he does... Ignoring the past and saying how great America is does not help things. We need a lot of dialogue as a country...And we need to address and rectify the true (and often supressed) history of this country. (See "A People's History of the United States by Howard Zinn from 1492 to Present)

8 The Elections and Political Process - In a dictatorship people only have one option. In the US we have only two options. This is not a strong democracy at all. There were more than 5 other candidates on the ballot (including excellent candidates like Cynthia McKinney/Green Party & Ralph Nader/Independent) that were virtually ignored by the media. The debates are controlled by the republicans and democrats and the conglomerates who own the media and these forces BAN and SILENCE other candidates from the debates. This is a major problem. See www.opendebates.org

9 Culture of Materialism - In the US the rich people who own and run the TV stations, colleges, internet (yahoo, google, AOL, etc), radio stations, magazines, newspapers, etc have created a culture of materialism and self gratification! Our culture has established a dominant consumer culture where people are primarily targeted audiences for advertisers. They teach us that happiness comes from things (what we own) and not from helping others or doing things that benefit humanity. Sucess in capitalism is too often measured in how much money we make, rather than who we are and what we offer society and the community. There is a GREAT video on this at www.storyofstuff.com Its only 20 min. Pass it on to everyone you know. It's a must see

10 The Justice System - Putting people in cages like animals does not deter crime all too well. It's also far from humane. It tends to make people more angry and more knowledgable on crime (from living with other convicts). In some cases, if people are very poor, it offers them food and shelter (that are too expensive to afford on minimum wage). We need prison abolition. This movement is about true rehabilitation and education of those who are convicted. People need to be cared for humanely, and to get counseling, and help building their life and societial skills. Many prisons now are privately owned and they profit off of keeping them full. There is also profit to be made from making prisoners work for pennies a day. This is a form of slavery. Building more jails will not stop crime. Providing affordable housing, education, healthcare, and liveable wages will help. And the drug war must be ended. See the film www.AmericanDrugWar.com for more info. Prohibition did not work and was a waste of time and money, and so is the drug war. We also need to eradicate the death penalty. In a system where the rich get the best lawyers and the poor get the worse legal representation available, the death penalty can be seen for what it is. Not to mention many people on death row have been proven innocent or could be. See www.AfterInnocence.Com . Police brutality is also a problem and the Sean Bell case was a blatant disgrace. As I said the rich pay to stay free by affording the best lawyers. Of course this represents what we have in the US, which is democracy for sale.

Once people are done celebrating (part of me is happy too to have this long overdue precedent established), they will realize that symbolic change does not equate to REAL change. People must let Obama know loud and clear that we want peace, equality, and justice, because the issues I discussed above are critical.

PS - There is no such thing as America. America is a continent (that includes Mexico and Canada) not a country! I see a lot of flag waving out there. There is no American Flag. Don't forget about Central and South America. Just somethin to know...

* If I saluted a flag it would be a flag of all humanity... of equality, love, justice, sharing, and cooperation for ALL.

Peace,

Tha Truth

"Tha People's Music" is my third CD release in three years. "Tha People's Music" is the culmination of years of research and is heavily inspired by the legendary book "A People's History of The United States" by Howard Zinn. Like the book, on this CD I break down the truth about the history of the United States. This is the history that shaped all of our current problems. At the end of "Tha People's Music", I also provide solutions (some from A People's History and many from my own imagination). Other themes on this CD include immigrant rights, police brutality, the drug war, prison abolition, the environment, healthcare, the media, poverty, and many, many more critical issues/movements.

"Tha People's Music" is available now from www.itunes.com and from  www.Amazon.Com (as mp3 downloads) and www.CDBaby.Com (as mp3 downloads and physical CDs). For wholesale orders contact thatruthmusic@yahoo.com. If you don't have a credit card email thatruthmusic@yahoo.com for info on paypal/checks/money orders.

Below is an article I wrote recently published in SleptOn.Com - one of the best sources of REAL news (along with Democracy Now - DemocracyNow.Org)

'After Innocence': Irrefutable Evidence of the Drastic Need to
Revolutionize U.S. Prisons
by 'Tha Truth' (Political Rap Artist)
August 03, 2008

Politically educated individuals have no doubt seen many informative documentaries. Personally, I have seen countless well-done documentary films and many have added to my knowledge and evolution. However, the documentary After Innocence is beyond compelling; this film is one of the most important films ever made.

After Innocence takes us inside a place many individuals would rather not think about. It is easier for us to ignore topics that are unpleasant, yet often these are the topics most worthy of our attention and actions. While many tend to ignore the conditions inside the US prison system and tend to think the worst of incarcerated men and women, this film provides the opportunity to get to know those who have been locked away for decades.

From meeting several ex-convicts in the film, we learn about their treatment on the inside and how the system operated in their resulting prison time. The shocking aspect (to many) of the film is – all of these men were released because they were innocent, after serving years behind bars. Their innocence was proved in court years, even decades later. Then, after being released these wrongfully convicted individuals must deal with problems such as having to pay thousands of dollars to have their criminal records expunged, not being compensated financially for their suffering, trying to find a job with a criminal record, and living with the traumatic memories of isolation and inhumane treatment inside the prison walls.

It is beyond critical that any compassionate, politically educated individual see this film and encourage others to see it. We often speak of the problems of the US legal system, but this film provides irrefutable evidence of the drastic need to completely revolutionize US law enforcement. The film examines the inhumane treatment of prisoners, the role of money and greed in the lawyer/courtroom process, the outrageousness of the death penalty, and so much more. Fortunately those who made the movie are organized and active in helping to change the system. After seeing "After Innocence" viewers will no doubt be inspired to play a part in this crucial struggle. Far from being depressing, the film offers ways to get involved and portrays many courageous activists and organizers who are making a serious difference.

I have also written a song for my next political rap album called "The Injustice System," which incorporates many of the film's issues and themes. The song features lyrics such as

"The movie After Innocence
After you witness it
You see the significance
Of changing the whole system it's
The real Shawshank Redemption
That needs attention,"

"Daryl Hunt was innocent
but served 20 years in prison
His innocence was presented
with DNA evidence."

The song's purpose is to infuse themes from the film (in addition to my own research) to bring attention to the prison industrial complex, outrageous drug war, horrific death penalty, and lack of humane treatment in so called corrections. Additionally, the purpose of the song (and my CDs) is to quickly educate those who are not prone to watching documentaries (like After Innocence) or reading informative books.

After Innocence is available from many outlets. For more info: afterinnocence.com
