FROM ABDULLAH TO CAVE - AN EXPLORATION IN SONG

Join Singer, Songwriter, Pianist, Estelle Kokot as she takes you on a solo musical journey, from Abdullah Ibrahim's The Mountain  to Nick Cave’s Red Right Hand. This annual Pre New Year’s Eve Presentation at The Vortex Jazz Club will premiere outings of new compositions by Estelle, including Komodo Dragon Jam, songwriter Trent Reznor from Nine Inch Nails, Stephen Sondheim, songs by South African composers, Duke Ellington, Joni Mitchell and more.

Regulars at the Vortex will no doubt be familiar with the compellingly dramatic live work of Estelle Kokot. Her great strengths: a powerful yet intimately confiding vocal style, cogent and persuasive lyrics the subject matter of which ranges from affecting but unflinching despatches from love's front lines to meditations on contemporary African politics and their human consequences. Chris Parker Vortex Jazz Review

A powerful, soulful and independent artist, if you want to hear a genuine innovator with a creative twist on Jazz vocals include Estelle Kokot. The Guardian

Kokot is an original storyteller who's bound to become a cult figure on the underground jazz scene.
The Sunday Times SA

With considerable wit and intelligence, Kokot ousts the singer and colonises the songs. Mark Rosen Business Day SA

Standards and originals perfectly compatible side by side, Kokot is an excellent arranger of her own and other peoples' material. John Fordham

Critics' choice

Time Out says

South African pianist/singer/composer Kokot is an exceptional talent, with a repertoire that stretches from ethereal, English-accented pop to modern jazz, with Latin and worldbeat touches. Her witty interpretations of Mose Allison, Antonio Carlos Jobim through to Duke Ellington's 'Don't Get Around Much Anymore' make her a one-woman tour de force.

Estelle Kokot
Presents Her
One Woman Show
AT
The Vortex Jazz Club

Following her recent successes performing new material live on BBC Radio 3's Intune, an interview on BBC Radio 4's Soul Music series 7 'So What' and a sell out gig at Pizza Express Jazz Club, Estelle Kokot presents her one woman show (an annual event four years running) 'From The Blues to Brazil and Beyond' at the Vortex Jazz Club.

A musical journey from Mose Allison's acerbic 'Your Mind Is on Vacation' to Antonio Carlos Jobim's carnival delight 'Felicidade' ( sung in Brazilian), dropping by to revisit a brand new arrangement of Duke Ellington's 'Don't Get Around Much Anymore' and stopping over to sample Charlie Parker's Anthropology ( sung a cappella) and more.... cosy up and be warmed by an evening of fun and reflection a day before the year is on its back...

Had your fill of turkey sandwiches? Cleared up the tinsel, stockings and streamers? Well treat yourself to a sumptuous trimming of a different sort; join in the fun with Estelle for an intimate evening of song, storytelling and anecdotes

"With considerable wit and intelligence, Kokot ousts the singer and colonises the songs...  a deep magenta voice with a built-in echo" Mark Rosen, Business Day South Africa.

"Kokot's sweetly melodic voice set the audience on fire... a tumultuous reception."
Tebogo Alexander, The Sowetan/SABC Morning Live

"If you don't hotfoot it to catch one of South Africa's premier jazz voices in full fantastic flight, 'your mind is on vacation'- to borrow a phrase from Mose Allison - and your judgement, frankly, out to lunch... deliciously decadent!" The Cape Times

"A powerful, soulful and independent artist... if you want to hear a genuine innovator with a creative twist on Jazz vocals, include Estelle Kokot."  The Guardian
