Hello all!

Just a quick update on what we're up to.

Recording our next full length "Cursed!" has been paused for the past few months while Marisa was away and Mat recorded Knight School and the German Measles, but will soon resume.
(We've got too many songs, btw)

We've got a couple of shows coming up including a UK/Sweden tour in July on which we're most excited to be playing at the INDIETRACKS Festival in Derbyshire, England on Saturday, July 25th with Camera Obscura.
Stay tuned to our MySpace for more dates on that tour.

Meanwhile in the states, on Saturday, June 13th, we're playing an All-Day music festival called Exit 44 Fest in Queens with a lot of different folks and old friends My Teenage Stride. It's a day-into-evening affair and we go on around 4:45 / 5 pm.
It's at a new art-space venue called Wonderland.

Here's all the reviews that were once displayed on the main page.

Below is some stuff that people have said about us, although we've actually never listened to any of those 90s or C86 bands they mention us reminding them of. oh well, whatever.

The Specific Heats: " Carl Sagan", Skatterbrain, 9.28.06:

You may remember a post I did on The Specific Heats quite a while ago before the new record came out. Well, the new record Aboard A Spaceship Of The Imagination has been out for over a month now and I guess I feel like talking about it again. Originally from Boston, but now relocated to Brooklyn, The Specific Heats make fun pop music influenced both by psych and surf rock. The album's closer(aside from the instrumental "Epilogue"), "Carl Sagan," is one of the best pop songs I've heard in a while, check it out below.

[MP3]: The Specific Heats :: Carl Sagan (Highly Recommended!)
I really have a soft spot for "Carl Sagan" because as I've made very clear before, I love the organ, particularly in pop songs. I'm not really sure why, but that sound paired with the jangle of indie pop-style guitar is just complete bliss to me. This album features many friends of the band on many of the tracks including this one, with Marisa of Skatterbrain favs The Besties sharing vocal duties with Mat. At around the 3:20 mark however, the song drops of leaving Mat's guitar all alone until one by one the drums and organ rejoin building up into a wash of sound and then ending again leaving just guitar to ride out the end of the song

"The Specific Heats Aboard A Spaceship of the Imagination" Album Review from Halo 17 Blog:

"Thanks to the trippy title and the intergalactic landscape that adorns its cover, this record will no doubt find itself surrounded by ambient psych rock albums on the shelves of unsuspecting stoners everywhere. Let this be a warning then to those who are enticed by the idea of being launched from their smoky bedrooms on a spaceship of the imagination because this ship is headed straight to the surf, sun and sand of the 60's American coast.

The Specific Heats are a Boston five piece* with a soft spot for sweet 60's pop (The Shadows and The Kinks often come to mind) and, judging by their name, an apparent love of college chemistry. There is an unmistakeable 21st century indie twist to their sound as well...

The tracks themselves are short and sweet but each has their own sound and an important part in the album as a whole. Opener, Take the Wheel, is sung from the point of view of a boy delighted to be rid of his lying girlfriend. The song has an irresistible bounce and is complete with "do-do-do's" and a cheery melody to match. From here the album moves to Other Boys, a somewhat less cheery tune, again about an untrustworthy girlfriend. The lyrics tell of heartbreak and the minor key makes for a slight air of gloom but this is still pop music with bounce and as always, there's room in there for a "bop-bop-bop" and a "do-do-do" amongst all the betrayal.

Of all the tracks, All Summer best sums up the atmosphere of the record with a lazy beat and a guitar that bends like distant figures on a hot summer beach but themes of innocence and young love on the summer shore can be found in almost any track you care to choose. The most notable deviation from this is the exceptionally fuzzy Brain Song which is, quite simply, a song about looking after your brain. The backing vocals stop in the middle of the track for Mat to deliver a tongue in cheek spoken word lesson on brain maintenance in which he warns of the potential dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. "When I want to journey to the centre of my mind, I read a book" he remarks before the track dissolves into the tune of Iron Butterfly's In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida. After a welcome reprise of All Summer, the album winds up with Carl Sagan bringing the listener back to reality with a touching farewell to the summer and the inevitable end to a summer fling." - Peter Matthews

NOTE: * we were a 3 piece, not sure where he came up with those extra members...

The Specific Heats, Aboard a Spaceship of the Imagination (Total Gaylord) Album Review from Erasing Clouds:

The Specific Heats may have set up their album to look like a child's adventure through space, but musically the childlike side is more evident than anything intergalactic. Think soft, simple, catchy pop tunes. At the same time there's way more broken hearts here than you'd find in most children's stories. "I won't be the boy of a girl who thinks she can toy with my heart til it breaks," Mat sings in the first track, singing it like it's a '50s vocal pop hit. But instead of a girl group singing it with confidence, there's a shy boy singing it with sadness and a certain amount of fear. That's the basic approach here: a classic pop sound, but filtered through a minor-key filter of sad wistfulness.

The album's less a quest for some far-off star than for love and comfort and belonging. That search is channeled well into memorable melancholy moments throughout, and into some brilliant, still in their own way reserved (by hesitant longing), singalong, clapalong numbers like "Are You for Real, Mehgan O'Neill", or the group "ba ba ba" chorus at the end of "Ice Cream Shop." It's the wistful, less fun, sadder "Carl Sagan" that ultimately reveals the true nature of the space décor: that true love and memories of good times often seem as distant as the furthest galaxies. – dave heaton

the Specific Heats
Aboard a Spaceship of the Imagination Album Review from DOA:

"...this Boston trio's debut careens wildly through some well-assimilated influences into a clever, chaotic and very catchy place of its own. 60's pop, new wave, indie pop and psychedelia are all put to good use on Aboard a Spaceship of the Imagination, a barrage of unpredictable, odd hooks delivered in inspired-amateur form.

The Specific Heats are a little unwieldy, but their touch-and-go hold on rhythm and key enhance the nervous surprise of these songs. They must have a fuzz-guitar fueled time machine on that titular spaceship, too, because some forgotten, favorite bands are revisited here, bands like 90s D.C. 'gazers the Ropers or New Zealand's chiming and spooky 80s ladies Look Blue Go Purple. 60s casualties like the 13th Floor Elevators or the Seeds also pop up from song to song, all decked out in the Heats' bookish freak-out style.

There's a string of wobbly charmers that open up Aboard a Spaceship of the Imagination, unsteady, recklessly produced, soaked in reverb and full of near-spontaneous invention. The spacey and sour "My Secret Agent Days Are Numbered" and the surging "Other Boys" are the perfect Flying Nun singles that never were (these on - har! - Total Gaylord) - with punky jangle, cavernous echo and a rush of microphone-shy melody.

Equally awesome is "Dependable Ninety-Two" which opens and closes with a fuzzed-out acid riff that's an instant classic. In between is a rambling, minor-chord verse and chorus whose dry, garage-rock simplicity sets off the exotic guitar motif (and I guarantee no one in the band ever referred to it as a 'motif') that reappears at song's end. A smash.

The 50% skill, 50% serendipity approach to production works well for the band, even the 1:05 minutes of hastily strummed "All Summer Reprise" sounds great; in fact, the Specific Heats are the rare band for whom I would advise no improvement in technical skills whatsoever, just write more songs.

I can't think of another band whose shambalic fervor works in their favor more than the Specific Heats, but then again I don't get out enough. The Heats evoke the rawer sound of a less co-opted era, the guitar-pop of hard working labels like Sarah or the aforementioned Flying Nun, completely untethered from corporate interest. "

album Review from Indie-MP3: Keeping c86 alive!:

"...Aboard A Spaceship Of The Imagination by The Specific Heats is the best of the three. It kicks off with Take The Wheel, which is a short, sharp tuneful number from the days of C86. Further in we see the darker heart of the band on Dependable Ninety-Two, Are You For Real Mehgan O'Neill that is reminiscent of the more tuneful side of the Jesus and Mary Chain and almost wrapping things up is Carl Sagan, some unassuming shuffle pop that sparks a grand shimmering wall of guitars ending."

Two new tracks up!
A rough mix of "back Thru Tyme" from the upcoming "Back Through Thyme" 7" EP and a newer demo of a song called "Sit & Cry".

ALSO, in the process, RU 4 Real & Take the Wheel were momentarily deleted, and therefore lost their play counts! Bummer!!!

Things are shaping up for our set at the Daniel Johnston tribute show @ P.A.s and we couldn't be more psyched to play!
It looks like our line-up will be:
Keira on Drums, Myself (Mat) on Guitar & barritone (show debut! - I modified my old brown danelectro 56-u2 and turned it into a barritone this past spring for the specific heats 7" see below...), Kevin will be making his debut on guitar and the latest development (about which we are thrilled!) is that Leah, the other half of Mat's new band the Doane-Givvaschittz, will be joining us on Farfisa organ.
It will also be nice to spen a few days back in Boston, eat some cool dogs and enjoy the company of our boston pals, the beautiful scenery, great food, and old haunts.
See you there?

In other news, we recorded four songs for a 7" back in feb/march that was supposed to come out this summer, but as of yet it has languished untouched since then and only a couple of overdubs away from being finished and we haven't had access to the master tracks.
We'll keep you up to date on any progress with that.

Until then, if you're not vegan, I highly recommend that you get yourself some cool dogs* and enjoy these fleeting days of summer.

(you Massachusetts folks can find them individually in store 24s, in 4 packs at shaw's/starmarket or in sundae form at a cinema near the cape ann marina in gloucester. OR at Sweet Things on the corner of Graham ave and Metropolitan in Brooklyn, NY.)

from CriticalMetrics.com, CantonRep.com, & www.tahoe-world.com  :

The Specific Heats "My Secret Agent Days Are Numbered" (Total Gaylord Records)

"My Secret Agent Days Are Numbered" may have a silly title and a snappy indie-pop dance beat, but its tone is nevertheless overwhelmingly melancholy and nostalgic. The entire song is washed out with severe reverb, from its ghostly lead vocals and icy synthesizer hook on down to the brittle lead guitar notes that articulate the deep loneliness of the track more effectively than its mumbled, mostly incoherent lyrics. The track serves as the centerpiece of the Specific Heats' debut album, and though it is certainly the most downbeat cut on the record, some small bit of its sadness bleeds into even its perkiest neighbors.
