Two years ago, radical right-wing groups and George W. Bush's veto threat blocked federal hate crimes protections for LGBT people. Today, we have another chance. But because we came so close in 2007, our opponents are fighting more ferociously and lying more shamelessly than ever. Your donation will support an ambitious campaign of nonstop advocacy in Congress, grassroots mobilization in key districts, media work, hard-hitting research, and extensive public education. It will enable us to combat the outrageous charges of anti-gay groups and deliver long-awaited justice for the LGBT community. And it will secure your HRC membership for 2009.

On the day the California Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in the NCLR/ACLU lawsuits to overturn Prop 8, HRC will launch EndTheLies.org, a new website to call out the lies spread by right wingers to stop the LGBT movement’s push for equality.
As we gear up to fight for passage of our legislative agenda in Congress, EndTheLies.org will feature an “interactive wall” of anti-LGBT crusaders (i.e. the AFA, Sally Kern, and George W. Bush) and will provide ways for visitors to take action against their efforts. Users will also be able to nominate their own candidates for the wall.
Here’s two examples of how EndTheLies.org will combat some of the favorite fibs by the right wing: Lie: If hate crimes laws are passed, pastors will be prosecuted for preaching what the Bible says about homosexuality.
Truth: Pastors will not be held liable for hate crimes based on preaching anti-gay sermons. The First Amendment protects a preacher from being charged as an accessory to a hate crime simply because of their speech. The Matthew Shepard Act only punishes violent crimes, not a person’s speech, beliefs or thoughts. In fact, the legislation contains language specifically protecting free speech.
Lie: Legislation that will provide employment protection based on sexual orientation or gender identity will force churches to hire homosexuals.
Truth: Federal employment non-discrimination legislation is sensitive to religious organizations and their fundamental beliefs and tenets, and includes a broad exemption for these groups, including churches, religious schools and other faith entities. For too long, anti-LGBT right wingers have won battles against our community by telling lies about our lives and families – and then excite fear and hysteria all the way to victory. It’s past time for us to aggressively go head-to-head with their tactics – and to call them out for their hypocrisy.

Utah State Senator Chris Buttars recently called the LGBT community "probably the greatest threat to America...I know of." He went on to spew a series of vile insults including:
-- Lesbian and gay relationships are "abominations."
-- LGBT people are moving America "toward a society that has no morals."
-- LGBT people will "destroy the foundation of American society."
Comments like this spread ignorance and fear – promoting an atmosphere of violence against LGBT Americans. They have no place in the discourse of our elected officials. Please send the letter below to Sen. Michael Waddoups, President of the Utah State Senate, and call on him to condemn Sen. Buttars' remarks and censure him officially.

As 2008 draws to a close, we are forced to confront two very different views of our country.
On the very same day that we made history by electing an African-American president, the passage of Proposition 8 and other anti-gay measures told LGBT people, "Your relationships don't count."
And last week's announcement that Prop. 8 supporter Rev. Rick Warren will give the Inaugural Invocation proved that our fight for equality didn't end on Election Day.
But the lies and the setbacks have energized us. It's time to use our anger – and our energy – to renew this fight, combat the lies, and demand the truth, undefeated and unbowed.
You can make a difference with even a modest contribution. Will you join us and become one of 2,009 new HRC members by the January 20th inauguration?
The Rick Warren controversy heralds the start of a defining year for this movement. HRC responded quickly and decisively, speaking out in dozens of national media outlets and generating 40,000 letters to President-elect Obama in four days, asking him to keep his promises on LGBT equality.
But we haven't lost sight of the broader tasks ahead. They speak to the core of why HRC supporters like you have joined our struggle. And they are exactly why your membership in 2009 is so important.
- First and foremost, we will continue laying the groundwork for full marriage equality, including a repeal of Proposition 8. HRC is taking aggressive action against the lies and fabrications that have held back the tide of equality. We can, and we will, show America that honoring love and commitment is the moral thing to do.
- We will fight so that Judy Shepard doesn't have to spend one more year without her son Matthew's life being honored with a hate crimes law that protects ALL of us.
- We will continue building public support for a fully-inclusive workplace protection, so that LGBT people will no longer suffer discrimination or lose their jobs because of who they are.
- We will fight for the freedom to serve openly in the military; for adoption and foster parenting rights; and for transgender equality as a critical piece of our national civil rights vision.
- In weeks to come, you will hear more about HRC's grassroots, online and other campaigns to channel the anger caused by Prop. 8 and pursue our vision of justice – in the states, workplaces, faith communities, college campuses and beyond.
Not all these things will happen in 2009, but this is a moment we must not let slip by. Together we must move our country closer to what we know in our hearts and souls belongs to us all: equality.
This is the time to join our movement. Help lead the new way forward as one of 2,009 new members for 2009. Become a member of HRC today.
We can't do this without you. HRC is only as strong as the members who support and sustain us. Have a blessed and peaceful holiday season.
Warmly,
Joe Solmonese President

Have you heard the latest news on plans for the Presidential Inauguration? On Wednesday, the Presidential Inaugural Committee invited anti-LGBT and Prop. 8 supporter Rev. Rick Warren to give the invocation at the Presidential inauguration. Within hours, this announcement unleashed a deservedly loud cry from the Human Rights Campaign and the community at large. Indeed, our frustration has been voiced on blogs, radio, TV and print news across the country (check out HRC's Harry Knox on NBC Nightly News). Today, I am writing to you because we have a chance to turn all of our energy and outrage into action. Make no mistake - this is a moment of opportunity we must not squander. President-elect Obama may not change his mind on Rev. Warren, but he can turn the corner on this controversy by officially committing to HRC's Blueprint for Positive Change - a concrete plan for LGBT equality. Our community worked tirelessly for Obama's election. We staffed the phones. We walked the neighborhoods. We talked to our families and friends. Obama's election night victory filled us with great pride and joy. But the following day, our community was hit hard when we knew that Prop. 8 had passed and Californian's legal marriage rights were dismantled. Yesterday, President-elect Obama defended his selection of Rev. Warren by saying "I am a fierce advocate for equality for gay and lesbian Americans." That makes me believe Obama can restore our trust by taking action and hearing from all of us. Once you send your message to President-elect Obama, please forward this e-mail to your loved ones urging them to join you. I am so grateful and so honored to work with you every day. And in these troubling times, the support we give to one another is a tremendous comfort and blessing. I look forward to the hard, but critical, work ahead as we fight for equality for all Americans. Warmly, Joe SolmonesePresident

When leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the Mormons) took a prominent role in ending marriage equality in California, I felt compelled to act.As a gay resident of Utah who grew up in a conservative Mormon family, I have seen the LDS Church divide the community and even families every day. I became active in and donated a million dollars to the "No on 8" campaign to help spread the truth in the face of a deceptive campaign funded largely by members of the LDS Church. I'm writing you today because LDS (Mormon) leaders have been trying to deflect criticism by insisting that they're not "anti-gay" or opposed to civil unions, domestic partnerships and other LGBT rights – just marriage equality. Join HRC and Equality Utah in taking them at their word – and giving them a chance to prove it. Urge the LDS leadership to publicly support LGBT protections in the Church's home state of Utah.HRC has sent an open letter to President Thomas Monson of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, asking him to sign on to Equality Utah's "Common Ground Initiative". They have yet to respond. If Mormon leaders really aren't "anti-gay," then they should have no problem publicly signing on to these five bills, which include:- Providing domestic partnership rights and responsibilities for same-sex couples; - Adding sexual orientation and gender identity to Utah's anti-discrimination laws for employment, housing, and health care; - Giving domestic partners of public employees insurance and retirement benefits; Giving domestic partners access to the courts if their loved one is killed because of negligence or malpractice; and - Repealing the second clause of Utah's Anti-Marriage Amendment which is used to prevent gay and lesbian couples from receiving any kind of relationship recognition in the state. Clearly, these are measures that the LDS Church should support, since they've said they're not opposed to LGBT relationship recognition, health care, housing, or employment rights. And the Church has no reason to be shy about entering the political arena – it did so loudly and boldly in California, raising more than half of the $40 million that funded the campaign to pass Proposition 8. Given the dishonest and dehumanizing nature of that campaign, it's understandable that the dialogue around the Church's role has been heated. There is a way to move beyond this anger, but it is not the burden of the LGBT community and straight allies to stop their rightful protests. It is the burden of the LDS Church to support legislation that impacts LGBT lives in Utah as well as other states positively.Ask the LDS Church leadership to back up its claim by supporting pro-equality legislation in Utah. Our movement has a long history of respectfully engaging with those who would deny our basic humanity and civil rights. Let's hope the Church's claims are more than just a political posture. Warmly, Bruce Bastian HRC Board of Directors

How many times have you had to hear opponents of marriage equality cite passage after passage from the Bible? How many times have you wanted to know exactly the right response to their literary acrobatics?
Newsweek's recent cover story, "The Religious Case for Gay Marriage" provides just that – debunking all the popular myths.
The response? On the first day, Newsweek was "bombarded" with 20,000 emails in opposition to its article.
The current cover story of Newsweek magazine titled, "The Religious Case for Gay Marriage" should be read by each and every member of our community. The piece provides an in-depth debunking of many of the popular myths about Scripture that the religious-right has used time and time again.
How refreshing to see a major, mainstream American news outlet speaking the truth in such a courageous way.
But, as you would fully expect, the right-wing has launched a massive uproar to the piece by flooding Newsweek's editors with thousands of letters in opposition. Last night, I interviewed Lisa Miller, Religion Editor for Newsweek Magazine and the article's author, on my Sirius XM radio show, The Agenda. You can hear Lisa in her own words describe how on the first day the story came out Newsweek was "bombarded" with 20,000 emails in opposition to the article.
Friends, when someone is courageously willing to stand up and take on the those who have for so long twisted the words of the Bible and gone unchecked – it is our obligation to make sure they know that there are also millions of us standing right on their side.
You too can make sure that the voices of equality and fairness aren't drowned out by those who oppose our families.
Warmly,
Joe Solmonese President

We're only 24 hours from our January 20th deadline to sign up 2,009 new members online. But we're still more than 800 away from our goal. This November, we won the opportunity to make significant strides for equality – so with tomorrow's inauguration, the real work begins. We'll need your voice as we fight each and every lie that is thrown against us in 2009. Bottom line: We can't win without you, Friend. Will you join our team in time for some of our toughest battles yet?
This is no time to rest. Our hard work and successes in 2008 have set us up to make tangible change – but we're not there yet. By electing a pro-equality president and bringing more fair-minded lawmakers to Congress, what we've earned is a fighting chance to increase marriage recognition, pass hate crimes protections, end workplace discrimination, repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and more. If we become complacent, that chance will slip away. Because I guarantee you this: the closer we get to real justice and equality, the harder the other side fights. And the harder they fight, the more they lie. The lies don't stop: we're against religion, we want to take over the schools, we'll put preachers in jail. How about this one from Newt Gingrich: "I think there is a gay and secular fascism in this country that wants to impose its will on the rest of us, is prepared to use violence, to use harassment." This is what we're fighting against. And that fight must be taken up in 2009 with every bit as much courage and conviction as we mustered in 2008. The 2008 election opened a door that had long been locked. On the other side of that door is not a roomful of treasures but a steep staircase. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., whose birthday we recognize today, once said that faith is taking the first step when you don't see the whole staircase. Help us take the next crucial steps, and we'll reach the top together. Joe Solmonese President

I opened The New York Times last Friday to find a full-page ad that is the ultimate demonstration of what our community is going to face moving forward. The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty purchased the ad to blame supporters of equality for "violence and intimidation" directed towards the Mormon Church and its members in the aftermath of Prop. 8's passage. We all know these claims are, at the very least, exaggerations, and at worst, outright falsehoods. We're going to see this as we work toward marriage equality and fight to enact federal hate crimes legislation: the other side can only win by telling lies about us. HRC has gathered the voices of clergy members from all faiths to respond to the false suggestion that there is an organized attempt to foment mob intimidation and violence toward the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in response to their support for Prop. 8. When did the LDS Church become the victim? This is the same church that conducted a national broadcast to every temple, calling on members to organize and write checks to the Prop. 8 campaign. The same church whose members donated more than half of the $40 million behind Prop. 8, even though California Mormons represent just 2 percent of the state's population. The same church that continues to spend exorbitant sums to mislead the public and attempt to transform its image. Yes, it's the same church. Anti-LGBT groups have spread mistruths to defeat us and it's what they are going to keep doing. And I think we've all had enough of it. Warmly, Joe Solmonese President
