Current mood:  busy

INTERVIEW WITH KEV KHRAS (DROWNED IN SOUND)

Who are Lion Club and what do each of you bring to the band, musically and otherwise?

-Lion Club are fresh, but young. We each bring a bundle of angst to the table.

How and why does Lion Club exist?

-We formed in separate wombs, but were brought together through our love for albino women.

Where will Lion Club die?

-We all have very intense relationships with each other; so quite possibly in the sun.

Where did the name come from? Do you have anything in common with the Lions Club?

Are there any ideas or themes that you have in mind when you're writing? Visions or images strived for? The sound's quite dramatic and BIG at times - the topics and production on Careless Gods and Age, for instance, are quite grand as opposed to the minimal sounds favoured by a load of London bands??

-When writing, there isn't a clear vision or objective at all. We obviously, want to achieve something different but we've never made a positive decision to steer clear of minimalism. We want to incorporate the two scenes together. While we're listening to early stuff by Tears for fears and Simple Minds, we're still into the newer bands like Health, and These New Puritans. It's hard to establish a sound when you're switching between programmed drums and live drums so production has a major role in our sound. Careless Gods and Age are of course, satisfactory; but we don't feel they convey us justly. We're currently doing some work with Rory Bratwell (Kasms/Ex-Test Icicles), so it'll be nice to see how his input and production will deliver a less blurred future for us.

What happened to the old drummer? He was hottt

-He went mad.

Are there any bands you look to now who you feel are way ahead of the game? People doing next level shit...

-Honestly, not really…It seems new music at present is pretty poor. We see the press continuously breaking the new big thing, when frankly the band aren't that good. A band isn't just about that one memorable song or the clothes they wear…It's a combination of a writing capability, consistency, stagecraft, and cool; it seems with such a vague music scene at the moment this convention is being completely disregarded. Bands are becoming bigger and bigger through what they do as a band, not their actually sound. Moreover, we do like White Lies and grant them our complete respect.

How have you found London since you first started loitering here regularly?

-It's inconsistent and offensive.

Why come to London? What or who is special here? Anyone you look up to? Anyone or anything you've got beef with? How do you think London compares to what's going on in the US, musically? Is it even worth comparing the two?

-We tend to get along with everyone and everything when we're out and about - only poultry disagreements. We like the spontaneity of London; we were East only last weekend for a meal, and somehow ended up at a New Cross squat party rammed with pit bulls by 12. Things like that excite; and living in England at present we need something to look forward to… London will come around though; bands like Electricity in our homes, Ipso Facto, and S.C.U.M are only a temporary measure. Although maybe nice people; they have no right to represent the London music scene to our neighbours; it's sickening enough that these are the sort of bands that are signing record deals and gaining celebrity status's.

Have you played or do you plan to play much around the UK, or are you sticking the capital for the time being?

-This summer we're only appearing in London once. We plan to stay out of the capital to find out what else England has to offer. A European tour is a foot ladies and gentlemen.

Seems like you've had quite a bit of attention among the patrons of the Underage scene - what do you like about that environment? Do you see it as something you'll stick with, or are you eager to leave that behind for regular shows?

-A tricky question. The children buy your records but you're forced to buy the children sweets? It's an unfortunate compromise. I think it'll be refreshing to start playing to older crowds, yes. Indefinitely.

What do you think the future holds for the current crop of hipsters? Looking months, years, decades ahead?

-The futures bleak for East London. It's time to migrate.

Any life advice for the Pix readers?

-Take 5-HTP and get a real job.
