Hello,

Happy autumn to you all.

We’ve had a fantastic summer of endless festival-ing. Hope you all got out and about and had a good summer.

Some of Lau’s summer highlights included:

A festival in Asturias where they hold a pipe band festival and open-air speed chess tournament simultaneously in the town square. The chess players didn’t seem to be putting the bagpipes off, don’t know if the reverse was true though.

Four days (and nights) in Belfast for the Tall Ships, where we enjoyed unending hospitality, joined Flook onstage for their last ever performance (hope it wasn’t really) and went on the telly with the very cheery Eamonn Holmes (your mum would love him).

A storming (and stormy) weekend at Cambridge Folk Festival, where we extended our ranks to include Aoife O’Donavon (Crooked Still), Corrina Hewat and Bella Hardy on vocals, and pedal-steel guitar hero Stuart Nisbet. BBC footage from the main stage set can be seen here.

We are delighted to announce that Lau have been nominated for the Virtual Festivals Critics' Choice Award. If you would like to vote for us, you can do so here.

Next week we will lock ourselves away to rehearse for a long string of shows that will take us into the winter, we'll be in England, Belgium, Japan and then back to the UK for a handful of dates in December that include:

GLASGOW STEREO (2/12/09)
LONDON UNION CHAPEL (3/12/09)
BRISTOL COLSTON HALL (4/12/09)
EDINBURGH QUEEN’S HALL (5/12/09)

(Full details of the tour at the foot of this email)

As ever, all three Lau-ers have been beavering away with other projects:

Aidan has been writing a new piece of music to be performed at the Distil Showcase at the Tolbooth in Stirling on 23rd October. He’s been performing with Phil Bancroft’s new project Home: Small as the World and has been working on a future collaboration with flute hero Brian Finnegan of Flook. He requests no bald band jokes. Details of their first performance can be found here.

Kris has nearly finished a new album featuring Tim O'Brien, Ian Carr, Ewen Vernal, John McCusker, Roy Dodds and Andy Seward. It’s due for release at Celtic Connections in Glasgow in January, mmm Glasgow in January.
He's also been out touring with McCusker and Woomble or McDroomble (copyright M.Green) as they're known and is heading to the isle of Colonsay as we speak. He's very excited about going back to Japan next month.

Martin has been mixing The Martin Green Machine and Kirkintilloch Brass Band spectacular that took place at the Tolbooth, Stirling in April. The tracks sound great, it appears you can drown out an accordion, you just need 25 brass players. For those anywhere near the village of Pathhead, Midlothian, (the Dalkeith end of the A68) Martin will be playing at the Pathhead Village Hall Fundraising Ceilidh with the all-star Pathhead Ceilidh Band featuring, Tom Bancroft, Corrina Hewat and David Milligan (The Unusual Suspects), Mattie Foulds, Jenny Gardner (Salsa Celtica, The Poozies) Amy Geddes and Inge Thomson amongst others, followed by up-tempo swing sets from Sophie Bancroft and Gina Rae and band. It’s only 20 minutes from Edinburgh and it is as much fun as you could ever have, in Pathhead, on Sat 26th Sept, at 7.30. £8/5

This summer saw the birth of a new and important organisation, Folk Against Fascism. Earlier this week our friends at FAF launched their new website www.folkagainstfascism.com, where you can sign up and learn more about how you can get involved in protecting the folk community from BNP infiltration. They have T Shirts, stickers, posters and all you’d need to organise your own event on the resource page. Have a look.

Stories of people who relocated to other countries, influenced by music.
Scotland-based band Lau won the 2008 Radio 2 Folk Music Best Group Award. Lau comprises two Scottish musicians and English accordionist Martin Green, who describes how Scotland's astonishingly vibrant folk music scene lured him north.

The good news is new album “Arc Light” is Out Now and some people have declared a love for it’s contents.. The Independent even liked it enough to give it the full 5 star treatment this weekend!

Over at our website, we have some signed copies which you can get from our new online store www.lau-music.co.uk . We have just taken delivery of some beautiful glossy, gatefold double vinyl versions, which also have a copy of the cd album inside those are £15 and the signed album CD is £12 whilst stocks last.. (500 only of each).

MARTIN GREEN’s MONSTRE
This Saturday.. if you happen to be in Scotland then head over to Stirling, it is our understanding that Martin Green’s been very busy preparing some new music for you and there is a special live show of this commission called “Monstre” .. it will be him and his green machiner’s with a huge brass band (Kirkintilloch Band est 1903 I kid you not!). No one  really knows what will happen when these two worlds collide but the intimate surroundings of the Tolbooth will ring to the sound of brass that is for sure, as this wondrous Monstre is unleashed for the first time:
for more on go here: http://www.stirling.gov.uk/tolbooth/tb_event/april_09/martin_green_s_monstre.htm
www.themartingreenmachine.com
it's also Martin's Birthday today, so Happy Birthday Martin!

AIDAN O’ROURKE
Aidan’s highly acclaimed solo album “An Tobar” (****Q, ***** Maverick) continues to get acclaim and Aidan has recently launched his shiny new website http://www.aidanorourke.net/ .
There was also a new commission  which was performed last week, at Fiddles on Fire at the Sage. Here's what the programme said about it:Fresh from a 'Composer of the Year' nomination at the Scottish Traditional Music Awards and the success of his much celebrated work 'Coriolis' for the Royal Scottish National Orchestra this new work finds Scottish composer Aidan O'Rourke on a wave of originality and genre-defying acoustic experimentation. Journeys by train over the Tyne and a past life studying Civil Engineering have inspired this piece which celebrates industrial beauty and engineering acuity.
Aidan: “Wednesday 15th saw my final gig with Blazin Fiddles at the spanking new Kings Place Theatre in London. It was an emotional gig with both Marc Clement and I leaving. I'll see them over the summer at a few festivals so I'm sure there's more tunes to be had. I'm just back from a fantastic weekend in Knoydart. It was the first Knoydart music festival. The weather, the music and the crack was brilliant the whole weekend. Much recommended. Operation Knoydart 2 might make an appearance at some point! “

KRIS DREVER
has just been around the UK with Heidi Talbot as a duo and is now away around the Highland’s of Scotland with more of his pals singing and playing .
Inbetween his touring duties Kris has been preparing material for a new solo album. The long awaited follow up to “Black Water” www.krisdrever.com  is again being produced by John McCusker and some very special musical guests are expected to make an appearance before recording ends in July. There will be more dates and news of the release date on his website soon but for now he has a May Lau tour, followed by a June tour with McCusker and Woomble to look forward too
