Jan Kotik, 1972-2007
hi friends
As many of you may know, Jan Kotik, drummer for the band Beekeeper, Church Of Betty, and The (original) Mommyheads, passed away in December. He collaborated with Ida on many occasions, live and in the studio. Jan had lived in Prague since 2000, where his career as a visual artist was blooming. He leaves behind his wife Gaby and two sons, Armand and Taber.
Some of you may have seen and heard his drumming during our many tours with Beekeeper in the late nineties. He was in every way an extraordinary human, and one of the greatest musicians we ever heard or had the privildge of playing with. Night after night, in city after city, our jaws collectively dropped as we listened to him creating new language out of the air, new ways of navigating time and space, sound and rhythm. Nobody played like him, and he never played the same way twice. His life and his work will always be an inspiration for us. For anyone who heard him play or knew him, the depth of this loss is beyond words.
We invite you to join us tonight. Ida, Beekeeper, Babe The Blue Ox, The Mommyheads, Eliot Sharp and many others will be performing short sets tonight in memory of Jan. The show will be a benefit for Jan's family.
peace- Ida

Our old friend Pat Graham has put out a beautiful book of his photographs called Silent Pictures, it features pictures of Fugazi, Outkast, Modest Mouse, Ted Leo, Bikini Kill, The Secret Stars and many more. There is a full page of Ida photos- an entire roll of film shot in upstate New York from the session where he shot the pix for "Will You Find Me". We're so honored to be in Pat's book and so thrilled that it has come out. We couldn't recommend this book highly enough. Check it out!
Silent Pictures is published by Akashic Books, "a Brooklyn-based independent company dedicated to publishing urban literary fiction and political nonfiction by authors who are either ignored by the mainstream, or who have no interest in working within the ever-consolidating ranks of the major corporate publishers."
