Dear Friends, my band, The Wingdale Community Singers, has a few a shows upcoming.
On Saturday November 22, at 8PM, we're playing two sets at the excellent alternative/performance space called The Issue Project Room:
http://www.issueprojectroom.org/.
The Issue Project Room is on 3rd Street in Gowanus, Brooklyn. Directions can be found at their web site. That night we'll be without David Grubbs on electric guitar but joined by Elissa Moser Linowes on bass, and Randy Polumbo on electric guitar and slide.
On Wednesday, December 17th, we're playing the last ever show of the Happy Endings reading series in Manhattan, before that venerable institution migrates over to Joe's Pub. We played the very first show at Happy Endings, too, which happened to be the first performance of the band in public (featuring myself in the role of catatonically nervous person), five years ago. This should be a fun show, with great readers before us (Nelly Reifler and A. M. Homes), and though we probably won't be covering "I Apologize" again, as we did those eons ago, we may have another cover, as per Amanda Stern's requirements. The lineup will be Hannah Marcus, myself, Elissa Moser Linowes on bass, and Nina Katchadourian.
Finally, on January 24th, at Galapagos, we'll be playing a short set, with the same lineup as at the Issue Project Room. The event, which is going to feature some performance art before us, is a benefit for the artist's colony Yaddo, where I have stayed many times myself. A worthy cause.
And for those interested in the writing part of my life, I have a piece in O. magazine this month about being a godparent.
All best,
Rick M.

Dear Friends,
The Wingdale Community Singers (my band) is playing a special afternoon gig at the Philoctetes Center For the Study of the Imagination on May 17 at 2:30 PM. See their website for more information:
http://philoctetes.org/calendar/.
It's a wonderful organization, well worth your investigation, if you are in the greater New York area. We will be singing and talking--god help us--about the songs. In chronological order.
For those who with calendars, the Wingdales are also playing at Barbes, in Brooklyn, NY, on June 28th. I believe the time is 8:00 PM. The lineup that night will not feature our lead guitarist David Grubbs, but we will probably have a few ringers sitting in to fill his spot in the sonic palette.
I'm also reading and singing a few songs with Wesley Stace, a.k.a. John Wesley Harding, on April 23 at Fairleigh Dickinson University. I think the time is 4:30 in the afternoon. Or thereabouts. We will reprise this set (five songs, all of them rather obscure covers) on May 2, during the PEN World Voices Festival, for the BELIEVER evening at same, 6:00 PM, Tishman Auditorium at the New School. More details here:
http://pen.org/viewmedia.php/prmMID/2056/prmID/1584
If that's not enough, I'll be moderating a panel for the World Voices Fest on May 1, at the Brooklyn Public Library. The subject is writing about place, and it will feature the excellent Etgar Keret, as well as Nuriddin Farah, and others. The time in that case is 7:00 PM. You can see the World Voices web page for more details.
Lastly, if you want to hear me read, I'll be reading with Lou Rowan, the editor the quite splendid Seattle literary magazine, GOLDEN HANDCUFFS REVIEW, at Spoonbill & Sugartown, 218 Bedford Ave, W'burg, Brooklyn, 7:00 PM, April 22.
Sorry for the length of this tedious recitation.

Dear Friends,
This is to remind you, in case I have forgotten, that I do have a new book out--RIGHT LIVELIHOODS: THREE NOVELLAS--available from Little, Brown and Co. at better bookstores. And my band, the Wingdale Community Singers, is playing at the Living Room, Lower East Side, NYC, on 6/30, at, I believe, the completely reasonable hour of 8PM. We really need people to come out to this show, because there's some kind of requirement at the Living Room as to numbers of attendants, else you shall never play there again. I guess. Anyway, if you're thinking of seeing one Wingdales gig in 2007, this is the one, and anyway we are going to disappear and make our new record for a few months, so this will be the last time to see us for a while. Thanks for listening!

For about a year, I've been working, very irregularly, on a podcast called 18:59. My collaborator in the project is Michael Hearst, a very talented musician and member of the band One Ring Zero. Since we both are pretty busy it's rare that we get it together, but as of yesterday we managed to complete a big two-part episode, containing travel stories from Jonathan Ames, Nelly Reifler, Fiona Maazel, Ann Cooper, and others. You can find this podcast at the One Ring Zero website, which is thus: http://www.oneringzero.com/?page_id=52. Or you can subscribe to the podcast on iTunes by going to the advanced "subscribe to podcast" prompt box there and laboriously pasting in first: http://www.oneringzero.com/1859podcast4a.xml And then: http://www.oneringzero.com/1859podcast4b.xml. Because it's two parts, see. We are not very good with xml. Anyway, for those who are not in the know, and there are a lot of you who are not, 18:59 derives its title from the amount of the bill at the Indian restaurant on the day on which we conceived of the project, and each episode is EXACTLY 18:59. Mike and I do all the editing, and I would say we did the writing, too, but there really isn't much writing. We just turn on the microphone and go. It's not exactly a high-tech operation. Hope you enjoy it.

My band, The Wingdale Community Singers, will be playing Wednesday, April 25, at the Issue Project Room, Brooklyn, NY, at 8:00 PM. A ticket costs $10. I will also be reading, briefly, accompanied by the band, and it's the first time we've ever tried this sort of thing. The band is working on writing for album number two, featuring our "new" members, Nina Katchadourian and Abe Streep, and since lead guitarish Dave Grubbs is sitting out this gig, these two will be prominently displayed. Abe plays fiddle and mandolin, and Nina sings and plays all kinds of things, including tomato. The set, since we're trying to learn new songs, will probably have a fair number of new things in it, and rearrangements of some older Wingdales tunes.
