As 2009 draws to a close Freak ‘n Chic can look back at yet another superb year of output, with Dan Ghenacia, Anthony Collins, Dyed Soundorom and many others all continuing the labels excellent reputation.
The time for reminiscing, however, is not now as the Parisian imprint has one last trick up its sleeve in LoSoul feat. Fadila “Time Passes EP”, backed with a remix from the aforementioned Soundorom.

With releases on venerable institutions such as Classic, Playhouse and Moodmusic, Peter Kremeier’s LoSoul project needs little introduction but for the uninitiated his sound can be summed up as an off-kilter, original take on house.

“Time Passes” featuring the vocal talents of Fadila is typical to the wonky LoSoul interpretation of house, too. The bubbling mids and on-the-beat melodies shouldn’t work as a groove but do so so effectively that Fadila’s breathy vocals are given an airtight backdrop. With just a few, subtle effects here and there to provide colour, “Time Passes” sums up what is best about reductionist dance music production.

Dyed Soundorom returns to his home label with a remix of “Time Passes” that gives the original a sterling run for its money. Percussive, funky and exceptionally trippy the remix is Soundorom at his best, which is pretty damn good based on the year the young producer has had. Without removing anything from the captivating vibe of the original, Dyed a mix which is both complex and simplistic – a rare feat.

A hell of a decade for the veteran Freak n’ Chic, and a hell of a way to end it, LoSoul’s “Time Passes” EP is released December 2009

DIGI OUT DECEMBER 10th

It’s almost two years since Freak ‘n Chic main man Dan Ghenacia delivered any of his trademark undulating house for the label so it’s pleasing to see “Eightball Deluxe” where he teams up with Freak n’Chic new talent, Djebali.

Ghenacia has little to prove in the house music arena, having carved out a career as true leader in house music, but relative newcomer Djebali has set his bar pretty high too, with his two releases marked as standout output for both Freak n’Chic #36 and Jay Haze’s Tuning Spork #36.

With ‘Eightball’, the duo deliver an electro-break fuelled slice of deep house which, for all of its retro stylings, sounds 100% fresh. Filtered and phased chords swirl around the mix creating a blanket of warmth while frantic high hats push the track at pace and, combined, these two elements manage to keep the track deep yet provide more than enough drive for peak time moments.

‘Now You Need’ is an altogether darker affair, with jarring percussive effects and a staccato bassline welded to a clinical drum track to create an austere yet infectiously rolling groove.

An old school and raw ethic runs throughout this two tracker, which is yet another unmissable release from Freak ‘n Chic, as well as a welcome return from two of it’s finest artists.

Seuil returns to Freak n'Chic this autumn with 'Freak & Violence', a two tracker which sees the Parisian leader-of-the-new school take his impeccable sound into deeper, late-night territory.

With huge releases for Eklo and Moon Harbour since his last ep for Freak n'Chic, Seuil has been a name on many a lip and with this sort of output it's likely to remain that way.

Warm synths and a tweaked spoken vocal dominate the title track, "Freak & Violence". The synths have an ethereal, trippy vibe but are balanced by ultra-dry, ultra-groovy drums while the vocal slips in and out of audible significance which makes for a hugely absorbing listen.

Flip over and "Lost In the Soul Shower" holds a similarly deep stance, but does so in quite a different way. Sparse keys and complex but subtle drum programming give way to the ebb and flow of distorted, filtered organs which, combined with Seuil's usually superb arrangement, takes the track into "killer" territory.

This is a wonderfully fresh take on deep house and the perfect antidote to the self-consciously clichéd proponents of the noble genre as well as being another sterling release for Freak n'Chic and Seuil.

With Anthony Collins’ debut LP “Doubts & Shouts” still seeing huge dj support, Freak n’Chic invited Anthony to pick out some choice remixers, resulting in this package featuring Losoul and Seuil.
I
n the true spirit of Freak n Chic, Losoul and Seuil were asked to choose their weapons, going for ‘Tango Bizarre’ and the epic ‘Prism’ from the album respectively.

Losoul opted for Tango Bizarre due to it’s melancholic vibe, and he retains this with his mix but gives it a slightly tweaky, jazz inflected twist but the “classic Losoul sound” which drove Anthony choice is present in the all-important groove. This remix is an excellent example of the hypnotic, reductionist methods the veteran producer is loved for.
Next up is Collins’ close friend and highly regarded newcomer Seuil, who has opted to rework ‘Prism’ – a track which in its original form is a 12 minute percussive Houser and a real album highlight. Seuil boils the percussion down to a simmering, undulating interpretation where simplicity shines through and the bass does all the work.

All in all this release features two excellently executed remixes of two superb tracks, and with the names on board it’s got to be on your “must check” list.

Djs Support bY Matthias Tanzmann, Ilario Alicante, , Ivan Smagghe, Boris Werner, Michel Cleis,  Italoboyz, Gavin Herlihy, Martinez, Ripperton, Davide Squillace,  Martin Eyerer, Marco Resmann, AlexKid, Shonky, Varoslav..

DOUBTS & SHOUTS The remixes (EP)

VINYL OUT SEPTEMBER 9th
DIGI OUT SEPTEMBER 23rd

Monday, June 15, 2009

The words “hot new talent” are bandied around frequently but Anthea and Alex Cellar are truly deserving of any such plaudit as their “The Playmaker” release on Freak n’ Chic proves.

Separately, the duo have seen their stock rise considerably with releases for Area Remote and Phonica making all the right moves, but together their close friendship has yielded some outstanding material set to drop for Cecille, Tuning Spork and of course, Freak n’ Chic.

‘The Playmaker’ is exactly what you’d expect from a superb soundmaker and one of London’s finest house djs; a rolling, simplistic and bottom heavy cut punctuated with vox effects in just the right places. Despite being sparse, the track is warm, rounded and rhythmic which makes for a great peak time Houser.

Flipside duties are handed to Dyed Soundorom, a man who is fast becoming one of the nubreed of house producers garnering attention from all quarters. His remix is typical of his work; smooth, airy and all about the groove. More laid back than the original, his interpretation uses call and response rhythms to drive things forward while carefully placed dropouts and the originals vox samples provide the hooks.

This is yet another killer for Freak n’ Chic who have a seemingly endless stream of quality house music to offer, but the real attention should be placed on Cellar and Anthea – two artists with a serious future..
