DAY 3- March 26th

Today was fairly laid back. We went back to the studio off of Wedgewood and narrowed the song selection down to five and then found appropriate tempos for each song. Here they are (with the chosen beats per minute if you care).

Nightingale - 127bpm

Born in the Dark - 112bpm

Everybody’s Got a Broken Heart - 106bpm

My Last Goodbye - 130bpm

American Dream - 124bpm

From there...Juice taught me how to chip...

Photobucket

Jeremy worked on bass lines...

Photobucket

And I played a tiny guitar...
Photobucket

O.K. songs are picked and ready. Big day tomorrow!

DAY 4- March 27th, 2008

Photobucket

Photobucket

Today is a pretty massive day within the span of this sesson. We rented out a studio on Music Row called House of David for the whole day. It’s a beautiful space that Elvis once recorded in back in the day. There is actually a trap door in one of the tracking rooms that they built for him so he could drive under the studio and walk right into the vocal booth and then leave.

This is Adam (or Abner) who works at House of David as a secondary engineer. He really knows the rooms and sped up the process a great deal.

Photobucket

Essentially, the bulk of the session was recorded live. We set up in a way in which everyone in the band could see each other and catch the energy we’ve created together over our time together.

We pieced a kit together out of the best sounding gear we had around..
Photobucket

And Jerms had like 8,000 bass guitars to choose from...
Photobucket

Dave sat up right in the middle of things..
Photobucket

I stayed isolated so the acoustic and vocals wouldn’t pick up too much bleed over...
Photobucket

Josiah had a whole room to himself containing a wurly, rhodes, and hammond b3...
Photobucket

And, of course, Ryan did his thing all day...
Photobucket

Then we broke for way too expensive Mexican food...
Photobucket

After that, we came back and finished the live part of the session. It worked out where drums and bass were completed. From there we over dubbed guitars and piano.

Ha...oh and this is Liberache’s piano (which sounds aaaamazing!)
Photobucket

So, after 13 hours straight of magic and love....we went home exhausted and happy. The next step will be heading back to the Wedgewood studio and overdubbing some tasteful tracks. Ideas in the works include: live string section, harp, female vocals, sleigh bells, etc...

Stick around friends.

love,

Will

And so it begins.

Photobucket

We started yesterday here at The Hearts pad in our small deluxe practice room. After bbq and smokes we went on lock down and started ripping apart tunes from a list of about 15.

introducing our producers:

Ian Fitchuk

Justin Loucks

Photobucket

And we worked...

Photobucket

Photobucket

and drank beer and you tubed...

Photobucket

and John turned red...and nervous...

Photobucket

And Juice and Tron made comments on the songs...

Photobucket

And we listened...

Photobucket

And Ryan Kendrick came to start documenting the making of the e.p. We are hoping to make a mini doc to give away with the release of the cd. check out his work at: virb. com/digitalbohemia

Photobucket

The day was tedious, but exciting. A mesh of ideas and cameras filled the room and we ended up with 7 songs to choose from and some new fresh ideas for arrangments. Sometimes it takes work to find those 3 chords and the truth. Moving on!

DAY 2-March 25th, 2008

Photobucket

I don’t think there is an official name for the studio we are working at today. Daughys? Anyway, Ian and Justin work from here a good bit and there is a great vibe to the place. I know I know...but it just does. We set up mics and Dave C. came off of a plane and in to the mix.

So we worked on the songs and recorded the whole thing...

Photobucket

Photobucket

And Ryan did his thing...

Photobucket

And Dave set things on fire...

Photobucket

Essentially, today we fleshed out small sections of the arrangments and worked through the general presentation we wanted each song to embrace. Still have to whittle the 7 songs down to 5 which is heartbreaking. And I’m sure we will piss someone off with the ones that we cut. We’ve waited so long to be getting these songs on tape...that everything is a bit of a blur right now. I think I will try to post a blog containing two days of pic and glory. Thanks for checking all this out.

Love,

Will

Current mood:  contemplative
Category: Parties and Nightlife
Greetings from Earth, USA, Tennessee, Nashville, ect. ect. ect.

I thought it may be time for an update and I'm just in the mood to write. This past weekend was Next Big Nashville...which is a mini festival here in Music City that is made up of like 150 bands and 7 or 8 venues over a 4 day period. Jason Moon Wilkins and Ethan from Movement Nashville teamed up and did a great job with the whole shin-dig this year. Now that the party is over I'm left with alot of highlights and thoughts on the melting pot of people and tunes this city holds. here ya go...

1. my sweetheart the drunk

a.k.a Ricky Young and Slow Films. Our drummer Jonathan filled in on this set at Mercy Lounge and Ricky played a strat. And if you are musically close to me, then you know that I have been asking forever, Why isn't the stratocaster cool anymore? After Hindrix died and Clapton got lame....the trend faded I guess. Also, John Mayer doesn't help it's cred. But I do think Ricky is quickly becoming one of my fav artist in town. He seems to write from the heart and is wrecklessly musical. So check him out...or dont and be stuck up.

2. senior folk

a.k.a Landon Pigg played his set at the Cannery...which is a very ill concieved venue in my opinion. Mainly, the floor plan bothers me and you can only smoke in one half of the venue...which is better than no halves I guess. And when did Nashville become non smoking? We are in the South and noone cares about their health in the South. We ride bulls and camp at moldy lakes. Anyway, Mr Pigg's set caught me off guard, but I really dug it. In the words of Stan Lynch, "It was very boho." LP was the best pop record of this past year in my opinion, but he seemed to have intentionally deconstructed his tunes to make for a set of viby? earthy? adventurous? version of his work. And with an ol' doghouse thumpin behind him and bits of Spainish thrown around...I dont know. Seemed like he was having fun up there.

3. heart part

I have to talk about our set...because it was a personal highlight....because I played it. Right? We played 3rd and Lindsley about 11pm and the crowd was good. The night was primarily a country line up so I felt as though we stood out a good bit. But, even if there were some acts that were below par, I did feel good about being associated with a country dominated event. Hopfully...we can do more of that in the future. I think an act can be successful, no matter what kind of crowd they are playing to, if they stay true to what they do...and to do it well. Learn how to segway from song to song, plan your set out so it flows well, and dont get wasted 5 minutes before you go on. "Keep it pro." as John Davis would say. But a new tune "Can't Hide It" felt really good. And I didn't loose my voice which was a fear. so...good times.

4. post-party-party

And in light of the spirit of the weekend, I sucked it up and stayed out incredibly late dispite the responibilities of a work shedule during the day. Meaning, I had the chance to engage in many pos-midnight covos with some good folks. Manny, Eric Wilson, Jaren, Mr. Wilkins, blonde drink buyer from 3rd and Lynsley, Shelly and Steph, Ricky Ticky Tavy, Ethan the Red Headed Stranger, drunk chick from The Scene, Mr. Lister, group of lawyers in the parking lot, Mr. Marcus, Wess Floyd, guys from Love and Theft, Tyler James, Paul Mustache, homeless guy on broadway, random guy by the pool table, ect. ect. ect.

I guess I'm realizing that I'm not alone in my quest for creativity here. That there are good people in this town that are just as depressed and excited and confused and in love as I am. Cuz it is easy to see the dark corners of this city and its easy to try and make it something that it's not. NASHVILLE IS NOT THE NEW L.A. (Just have to say that) Nashville is Nashville. It is an amazingly unique city that you can't compare to any other. It's mixed with an old, incredible legacy of music...and a new, creative generation of writters and performers and musicians who are pushing the boundaries of music and art everyday they wake up. So.............be proud?? yes....be proud damn it. or move. Either way I see a constantly growing group of genuine people contributing to the future of this town. And I'm proud to be a part of it. So...good weekend. And....viva la nashville I suppose!

love,

Will

From the Arist Launch website...

"The T.V. says we did...
Perhaps making Neil Young proud, The Lonely Hearts track "War Brides" toped
the charts today on ArtistLaunch's most prominent chart, "Featured Songs"

Last night we played a  show in Memphis at the High Tone. The club ended up been full and we found out it once was a Do Jo where Elvis took karate lessions back in the 60's. Our set went smooth with Peter Barbie on guitar and John Davis behind drums, and Jamie Rudolf ended the night well.

Now, after a short night drive, I'm watching The Last Waltz and have decided that Rick Danko is my favorite bass player ever and background singer ever.

So, last night I had a dream that Ringo Starr died. I heard that they were going to hold the funeral in America and that it would be open to the public. Apperently, Ravi Shankar
also happend to live in the U.S. because it was going to be held at his palace. (Just to let some of you know...Ravi was the Indian guy who got The Beatles into the whole Eastern sitar sound)

So, as I pulled up to the masion there were thousands of people waiting at the gates. And it turned out that they decided to make it a closed funeral. But of course they let me through and Ravi meet me at the door and brought me into a massive ballroom. And there at the end of the room was an exact reproduction of strawberry fields with a golden coffin positioned in the middle. I walked right up to the coffin and John, Paul, and George were all standing there smoking cigarettes...dressed in Abbey Road outfits-

Which is amazing because those outfits were based on characters from a funeral. John the pastor, Ringo the paul bearer, Paul the deceased, and George the grave digger. BUT Ringo was dead in this particular dream even though Paul was still bare footed.

I eventually had to walk out of the room because I was over come with grief, but Ravi walked out with me and convinced me to go back in....to experiance the loss....of the guy who wrote "Octopus's Garden."

We made a four day weekend out of the past few nights and rounded up the boys for a bit of recording. A constant goal of The Lonely Hearts is to continously document the growth of the band musically. This time around it turned out to be fruitful. We ended up with 3 new tunes ( Baby's Got the Blues, Dirty Little Words, Out of My Mind) and afew circles under our eyes. Here are some pics of good times in our makeshift studio of luuuuv.
