(On-line and audio/.pdf lessons coming soon)...

Since 1983, music has been my full-time endeavor/career. I am currently accepting students for individual instruction. I enjoy helping others with their music and have about 30 years of experience doing just that. I've worked with many guitarists, other instrumentalists and singers. Whatever your level of experience/expertise -- beginning, intermediate to "professional/expert" -- I can likely help you. Singer/songwriters: I can help you with arranging and production ideas as well as interpretation.

Sessions take place in my home (North Raleigh, near RDU/Crabtree/Brier Creek) OR I can travel to your home as schedules allow (additional fee will apply, e-mail me for details).

In addition to "teaching", I continue to perform and record regularly and have a great deal of gigging and touring experience both here and abroad...from major festivals and music venues to coffeehouses, clubs and the funkiest dive bars. I've had the good-fortune of performing and recording with many notable musicians...

Styles include but are not limited to jazz improvisation, electric blues, funk, rock, r&b, roots, pop & twang. I can help you with arranging, technique, writing/developing your own songs and production ideas. I have a great deal of experience working closely with singers, too (arrangements, lead sheets, interpretation). There is more than one way to get from point A to point B...my methods vary depending upon the student's experience and goals.

NO EMPTY SCALE EXERCISES. The focus is on making music and expressing yourself. I can help you strengthen your ears and develop "your musical voice".

I am a very active performer with many recording credits including a Grammy-Nominated appearance on Nnenna Freelon's "Shaking Free" (1997). My latest album (CD) "Go There" charted on XM Radio "Beyond Jazz" (Jan 2007) and features bassist Oteil Burbridge (Allman Brothers Band), keyboardist Kofi Burbridge (Derek Trucks Band) and drummer Kenny Soule (Dag, Nantucket). I recently performed live on NPR Radio "The State of Things" with Lois DeLoatch... http://wunc.org/tsot/archive/sot0911c09.mp3/view ...and will appear on her upcoming album as well as Nnenna Freelon's upcoming album (on Concord Jazz).

If you want to catch me performing "live", here's where to find me: http://scottsawyer.net/calendar.htm

CJ: What else is on tap for you this year?

OTEIL BURBRIDGE: The Allman Brothers Band will continue what’s being called the “40 Years of Highs and Lows” tour, with some west coast shows, all part of a 60- date U.S. tour. While in N.Y., I got to do a gig with GO THERE, who I recorded with in 2006. [Guitarist] SCOTT SAWYER and [drummer] KENNY SOULE are two of my favorite musicians to play with. ...

These are challenging times economically...so I am currently offering REDUCED rates and SPECIALS as well as shorter session options (please e-mail me for details).

If you are serious about advancing your music/skills and (most importantly) enjoying the process, please e-mail first with a bit of info about yourself, your experience with music to date, where you are with your music and where you'd like to go with it. Or if you prefer, phone me at 919-423-4853 (if you reach voicemail, leave your name, a short message and a number where I can reach you)...Thank You. -- SS

SCOTT SAWYER: GO THERE
Scott Sawyer, 50, decided about 30 years ago to play music full time. "I made a choice to do it and that's what I've been doing ever since", he says. A celebrated jazz guitarist with a Grammy-nominated performance under his belt (with jazz singer Nnenna Freelon in 1997), Sawyer reflects on living out his dream right here in Raleigh as opposed to New York, L.A. or Nashville.

"It's a much smaller pond, so to speak. In that respect, it's easier to rise to the top if you're serious about what you're doing and talented, too," says Sawyer. "On the other hand, because it's smaller, there are fewer opportunities. It's a mixed bag, but I enjoy this area."

Sawyer moved to North Carolina as a highschool junior from the Chicago area. For years he's made appearances at upscale spots, including South, the Cardinal Club and the UNC-Alumni Center. "A lot of people in this area would know me as a jazz musician but I'm equally involved in rock, blues and fusion music. My new record Go There is not a jazz record, in my opinion."

Although Sawyer hasn't retired completely from the local scene, he is spending more time these days promoting his album and also enjoys teaching and working with other musicians. He arranges music and works also with singers (including his wife Ghezzi). Early on, he experimented with different genres, a big help now as he works with other musicians.

"From the time I was very young and getting interested in jazz, I made a point of hanging out with older musicians and just being very persistent about trying to play with people who were older than me and more experienced," Sawyer says. "As I've gotten a little bit older, I've found myself revisiting my rock roots, quite frankly. I view myself as a musician who's interested in a lot of different things and a lot of different music, and I try to keep open to it all. I've never been afraid to ask questions. I'm still a student of the music, and I study as much as I can."

Go There has been well received by listeners, making it's way to No. 18 on XM Radio's Beyond Jazz (Channel 72). The album features Oteil Burbridge (Allman Brothers band, ARU) on electric bass; Kofi Burbridge (Derek Trucks Band) on Hammond B3/flute and Kenny Soule (Dag, Nantucket, PKM) on drums. It's caught the attention of the music industry, resulting in a European tour. "That's really pretty amazing for an individual release that doesn't have an advertising budget," says Sawyer.

Sawyer enjoys touring, but also likes to be at home with his wife and their dog. Plus, he's finding that teaching others his craft is a great way to continue as a student himself. (He charges $65 an hour for adults and offers a discount for multiple sessions).

"For me, teaching is a great way to continue to move my music forward," Sawyer says. "It's amazing what you can learn from a beginning guitar student if you're open to it."

Go There This Fall

In his current Jambands.com interview, Oteil Burbridge describes a disc he recorded late last year along with his brother, Derek Trucks Band keyboardist, Kofi Burbridge.

We just completed a project called Go There. Just ridiculous, man—they are out of Raleigh, North Carolina. They have a guitarist, Scott Sawyer and a drummer Kenny Soule that lives in New York. I've done so many of these all-star jams sort of things over the years with all of these different people together because of their names and, you know, sometimes it is fun but it is not necessarily guaranteed that you will have some really intense chemistry. We went into the studio and did this and I felt like we had been playing together for thirty years. It was just amazing how natural it was. It's funny because people who have heard it are starting to e-mail me and say, "Holy crap, this sounds really good!" It makes me feel good.

Q: 1999's "Stranger's Hand" album with Howard Levy, Jerry Goodman, and Steve Smith, was an amazing mix of musical voices. Any other multiple collaboration projects planned?

A: I'm really trying hard to keep the extra curricular stuff to a minimum. I did do one CD with this great guitarist named Scott Sawyer. Its called "Go There". My brother Kofi played on it and a great drummer named Kenny Soule. These guys are really amazing. I usually don't have or make time for other projects but this one was so cool I had to do it. It turned out really great too. That CD is out now so GO GET IT.

Q: Are there any set routines you go through to get ready for a gig/session, or do you prepare differently for each role?

A: Not really. I just try to not eat too much before a gig and I usually have a glass of wine for the nerves. I really hate the studio and try to avoid it as much as possible. The Go There sessions was the first time I really had lots of fun in the studio.

A Bad Ass thank you to Oteil Burbridge and also to member Steven T. Winston "Bigfatbass" for compiling the questions. For the latest on Oteil, please visit Oteil Burbridge here
